Car doesn't start, has needed to be jumped almost 20 times in a year. Auto start stop has shut the car off in intersections

  • 12/28/2025· POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE

I have had multiple issues with the radio (16000 miles). After many personal videos dealership was able to fix one of this issues with a new part (22000 miles). I was informed the other issues I was having with the radio was due to my battery not staying fully charged. I was also having issues with the van not starting right away, which made me feel I could get stranded. It took many attempts to get the van to start. The van also wouldn't let me reverse one time, with a message telling me to place van in park. Another issue is the van is very slow to restart from auto idle shut off. The transmission is slow to change gears in lower gears and the van jerks a little bit. Next my rotors were warped. I was informed by the dealership that there was nothing wrong with my transmission and the auto idle down was working properly. NO one could explain the rotors being warped. They reshaped my rotors and replaced the battery and told me they hoped that fixed the problem. Well indeed it did not fix the problem. As of 12/27/25 the van completely shut off at a stop sign and again on 12/28/25. The issue is only getting worse (24,000 miles) and now I am scared to death that the van will stop while i am driving. The dealership has been contacted and I am waiting on a call back for a loaner car. I was in traffic and was extremely worried about my safety, as well, the safety of others around me and with me. ( Side note I returned the van to another dealership soon after the first dealership performed work on the van, when I heard a metal on metal sound and what sounded like a bolt rolling around in my back brakes. They did not find anything wrong but were also puzzled by the rotors already being warped. I was afraid to make the trip to the orig dealership). I have recently gotten a video of the brakes scraping again. This van is causing a lot of safety issues for my family.

Vehicle start up diagnostics show multiple failures, including ABS, e-steering, emergency braking, adaptive speed control. Dealership found a problem with the right rear ABS sensor. The sensor wire harness was severed. The harness showed damage in multiple places (see photos). Besides being severed, it showed another deep cut and a place where the outer plastic sheath was cut away. The loss of ABS sensor made the vehicle exhibit poor handling including braking. The vehicle has only 4000 miles and is in pristine condition with no damage.

  • 12/18/2023· FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

This vehicle has a feature that displays the posted speed limit on the dash display. The dealership, McGrath Honda in St. Charles, IL has told me this information is gathered by the camera system. Periodically the vehicle will pick up the Highway number sign and use that to display the speed limit. In the attached pictures it shows that we were driving on Highway 110 in Illinois and then the display showed that the speed limit was 10 MPH, which then changed to 110 MPH. Another example, for which we don't have pictures, was when we were driving on Highway 38 in Illinois and the display shows a speed limit of 35 MPH. When this occurred we were not familiar with the area and slowed to 35MPH which caused vehicles behind us to slow down, get very irritated, demonstrate their irritation using hand signals, etc. We resumed the real speed limit, 55MPH after we saw the next speed limit sign. We have had this inspected by the dealership, which performed a hard battery reset that did not fix the issue. The manufacturer, Honda of North America, does not wish to address this issue as ascertained via chat with them. There are no warning signs, the display changes to fictitious speed limits when the camera system picks up road signs other than speed limit signs.

  • 12/17/2025· POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE

The start stop system has failed to restart at a busy traffic light more than half a dozen different times after a 1 hour drive. Short drives do not bring this issue out. This got me stuck at a light, drivers annoyed honking and confused as I try to get my vehicle to start again. Turning the van completely off and back on again seems to get the van to restart again. I tried bring the issue up to the dealer when I brought it in for its first service, but the employee was extremely rude/belligerent and stated they would only do an oil change when I asked for help with this safety issue among other things. Will take to another dealer next service interval and try again. No issues known or warning lights on the vehicle prior. The van when it did this, error'd stating failure to restart or something along those lines. It happened so fast I don't 100% recall. After the issue the van would have no issues or lights on at all to even think anything had went wrong in the first place. This is a 2024, purchased new, vehicle.

  • 11/26/2025· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

2015 Honda Odyssey with approx 34000 miles. During auto stop/start events the van intermittently would not restart. This issue was worse during warm weather and occured throughout the summer of 2025. It was also noticed that the van sometimes would experience hard starts when restarting soon after a drive. It appeared to be a heat soak issue with the starter and the starter could not turn over the engine. There were no service lights present during this issue. After it failed to start, you would need to turn the ignition off then back on to attempt to restart. Service was performed at Performance Honda in Fairfield Ohio on 11/21/2025, and although the van passed all tests in regards to battery and starter. Initially the van was not going to be repaired/covered, but the van happened failed to start while in the service bay. The starter assembly was replaced under warranty on 11/25/2025. This is a safety issue when the van doesn't restart while at a stoplight or even worse when attempting to pull out into traffic.

  • 11/24/2025· ENGINE

The Auto Idle Stop (AIS) feature on our 2024 Honda Odyssey EX-L has recently failed to restart engine leaving driver and passengers stranded in heavy traffic at intersection traffic lights. This has occurred twice, once while traveling alone, once while traveling with five year old child. Safety put at risk because driver had to exit car in middle of road during rush hour traffic while cars attempted to go around. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by dealer. Had battery tested at auto parts store and results indicate battery in good condition. Vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives. There were not any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure.

At speed less than 25 mph, the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) did not work. At cross roads this CMBS will not work when a vehicle comes from the side. This will work only if it detects the vehicle's presence in front for more than 3-5 seconds. Will not activate during sudden presence of vehicle at any speed.

  • 11/06/2025· LANE DEPARTURE

When using the sensor-controlled, automatic wipers the lane keeping assist is silently disabled when the wiper speed switches to high. There is no warning or explicit notification of this other than the dashed lane markings indicator becoming "empty". There should be some on console warning that is more substantial so the driver knows they cannot rely on lane assist steering during this time.

  • 11/01/2025· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE

While operating the vehicle, I have experienced repeated problems with the idle stop/start system. Specifically: 1-The engine automatically shuts off at stop signs and stop lights as designed, but at times the vehicle fails to restart immediately when the brake is released or the acceleration is pressed. 2-Multiple occasion while stopped in traffic the vehicle unexpectantly shifted into "Park." 3-For the last 3 weeks the vehicle sometimes hesitates to start on first attempt.

The contact stated that while at a stoplight, the auto idle stop feature malfunctioned, and the vehicle failed to immediately restart after releasing the brake pedal. On several occasions, the vehicle had to be shut off before restarting. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The contact was informed of the NHTSA Action Number: EA25004 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING); and related the failure to the campaign. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 8,500.

  • 09/30/2025· UNKNOWN OR OTHER

The idle start/stop feature is not starting back up after stopping. This occurs after driving for for some time. I have had this happen to me in traffic where I am not able to quickly start my car back up. Sometimes it requires me to turn my car completely off on the highway. This also happens at traffic lights and I am not able to go after the light turns green. I took my car in to have it looked at and they said they saw the problem in the logs and it was that my battery was low. They replaced my battery however I am still having this problem with the brand new battery. An error shows on the dash but I can't remember it word for word.

  • 09/29/2025· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE

On multiple occasions, the idle-stop function engaged at a red light and then either the entire car shut down or the computer froze for a minute or two then restarted. For each incident, we had cars behind us that either nearly hit us when we did not go forward when the light turned green or nearly hit us by aggressively going around us while we restarted the engine.

  • 09/29/2025· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Reference: EA25004 Car fails to restart while warm, and idle stopped. This has happened twice in the last three months. The car will idle stop at an intersection - temperature outside is around 90-93. Air conditioner and other electronics are on in the car, but not on full power. The car will fail to come back on when the foot is taken off the brake. The battery light turns on. Must re-start the car using the push button after several tries. This invariably happens at a very busy intersection. Cars behind you see you take the foot off the brake but the car doesn't move - this is a very dangerous situation. 17,000 miles on odometer Took the car to a dealer a few days later. The dealer says everything tests fine. I ask for a new battery, and they claim they replace it after forcing a test failure. Issue happens again a few weeks later. Also noted: the car has a hard time re-starting when it's warm. It'll turn once, cause the fuses to click, pause, and then turn over and start. So it may not just be the idle-stopper that's the problem. Took to another Honda dealer. They refused to do anything - claimed all tests were fine. They could not replicate the problem. They noted the battery was somewhat discharged. They charged the battery, and said everything still tests fine. No further repair made. On the way home (25 minute drive - mostly highway), near the house, coming back from idle stop - the car laboriously turned back (slow/delayed turnover) on. Still not right, Not a full failure, but not how it should be behaving either. I try to defeat the engine idle stop - but this is an added human factor and I often forget to do so.

The contact owns a 2024 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that upon coming to a complete stop, the vehicle began to hesitate and idle abnormally rough. Upon resuming driving, the vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was able to duplicate the failure. The dealer deemed the failure a possible misfire. The contact was informed that the dealer had duplicated the failure in other vehicles. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 9,000.

The 2024 Honda Odyssey has an idle-stop feature which is hesitating too much and risking stalling at intersections. Honda tried to blame it on the battery but even Honda has tested the battery as fine. The 2025 model has a software fix to disable the idle-stop when the AC is running hard and this would fix the 2024 but they claim to have to fix for the car. This is dangerous to be stalling at major intersections and many Honda and Acura vehicles have had and many still have this problem. Remembering to disable the control every time one starts the car is NOT a fix. Please help get this problem for 2024 Honda Odyssey’s fixed before someone gets injured or worse trying to restart a car when it keeps stalling

  • 08/31/2026· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

My 2024 Honda Odyssey Elite has had two recent incidents of car going into idle and won't start up. The more serious one happened while I was stopped waiting to make a left turn. The Auto Idle Stop system shut the engine off when I was waiting on. Y left turn engine did not restart. I was stuck in the roadway for about two minutes before I was able to start the vehicle again. The red battery warning light was on while the engine would not restart. A few days prior during a trip from [XXX] to [XXX] the vehicle also would not start after I had been sitting with the engine off and accessories running at a gas station. After turning off the A/C fan, rear entertainment system, and unplugging my phone, the vehicle eventually started. I took the vehicle to a Honda dealer (Honda of [XXX]) They inspected it but said they could not reproduce the problem, so no repair was made. And they refuse to use my warranty to fix it. The vehicle is available for further inspection. My main safety concern is that the Auto Idle Stop system can shut the engine off in traffic and then fail to restart, leaving the vehicle disabled in an intersection like what happened to me. While stopped at a red light on a busy road my car engine stopped and usually it automatically restarted when I let off the gas but it would not start and the engine would not turn on. The car was stalled and it took multiple attempts to get the engine to restart. This has happened 3 times now. I have had the battery tested and the battery is good and my mechanic believes it is an issue with the starter

  • 08/24/2026· ENGINE

The van has trouble restarting. This can appear as both a sluggish restart and a complete failure to restart. The van has failed to restart both during quick stops like refueling and during the auto-stop feature at a stop light. When this happens, the driver must completely shut off the van and restart, which is a safety issue when stuck while blocking traffic. The van is having the starter replaced for a second time after the dealer determined the starter was failing. The starter was replaced in 2025 under warranty because the dealer determined the starter was failing. There are no warning lamps, but the starting does start to slow down over time. We missed the slow down the first time until it failed to restart because the onset is gradual. We only noticed the second time because we'd already encountered the issue. The two dealerships we've taken the van to for this issue were both hesitant to do the work, claiming trouble recreating the issue.

Yesterday (8/21/2026) my husband took this vehicle in for a routine oil change and upon the 100 point inspection was informed there was an oil leak somewhere from the engine. This vehicle is barely 2 years old and barely at 30,000 miles. There were 0 signs of a leak somewhere we had no idea. They completed diagnostics and determined it was the axle seal. Thankfully this was covered under warranty but their master mechanic shared with my husband that this is a very well known issue with the 2024 models and the fix is using the newer manufacturing parts. Again, there were no visible signs of a leak, there were no vehicle computer warnings of an issue other than the oil life alerts that are programmed.

The speakers make a popping and crackling noise that is repeated, in a mid tone - high tone - low tone noise pattern, when the radio is on or off. It begins when the engine is turned on. It also occurs in standby/engine is not on/radio is on mode or in standby/engine is not on/radio is not on. The popping/crackling occurs whether the radio is on or not, and the radio can be heard along with the popping and crackling noise. I am guessing it is similar to the recall 23V-431, but this van VIN number does not have any recalls associated with it yet. Restarting the radio, resetting the radio, etc does not alleviate the issue. Also, the cabin camera is not working, says "problem with camera" and displays "loading" with the moving circular icon. The display remains dark for the cabin camera, and rear entertainment screen is also not accessible. Cannot recall any large bumps in the road, no collisions with anything. If the design of the cables has not changed, then the recall needs to cover all VINS manufactured with the same wire assemblies and procedures, including all future VINS, as this problem is clearly repeatable. The customer should not bear the burden to fix an issue that has been deemed an issue in prior year models, with no changes to the design or assembly procedure to the related components.

Car purchased July 4, 2024. Idle stop/start was working but after several months, it became defective. After driving for some time, idle stop/start wouldn't work properly and cut the engine off when idling. I would have to turn the car, open my door, and try to restart the car. It also occurs after parking, turning off the car and less than 10-15min attempt to restart. Most of the time, it'll start after 1 or 2 attempts. Except today 07/31/2026, I got home and parked. After 20min, I tried to start my car and after 10-15 attempts, it wouldn't start. After waiting 2 hours, the car finally started.

I was almost rear ended because the intersection I was stopped at was near an interstate offramp and the driver did not recognize I was stopped. I took it to a Honda Dealership and they said they could not replicate the problem but that there was a bulletin identifying the issue and that the bulletin had been withdrawn. I was told that it likely meant a recall would be coming in the future. The following message came on when the vehicle turned off: Shift to park. The red battery dash light was on.

The dealer has replaced the battery, recharged the battery, replaced the alternator, and later found an excessive parasitic draw, but the electrical problems have continued. The failures affect more than starting. The sliding doors have failed 30+ times by refusing to close and acting like something is blocking them when nothing is there. This creates a safety concern because passengers may not be able to safely enter, exit, or secure the vehicle. The instrument cluster has gone black on startup in Park about 10 times and has also blacked out or faulted while in use. A brake failure warning light appeared once. The backup camera intermittently dims so badly that I cannot see behind the vehicle while reversing. A service advisor observed this issue, but the technician could not reproduce it during inspection. The DVD/interior electronics, USB charging, and wireless phone charger have also failed. The power tailgate/trunk malfunctioned repeatedly before repair, including problems opening or closing and clicking. The front driver and passenger windows also do not roll down smoothly. The front window still shakes or drags even after two repair attempts. The vehicle has been inspected by authorized service centers and is available for inspection upon request. The exact root cause is unknown, but based on the repeated dead battery, charging, parasitic draw, door, display, camera, brake warning, interior electronics, and power window failures, the pattern appears consistent with an unresolved electrical or charging-system defect.

The idle start stop system on my 2024 Honda Odyssey sometimes works, and then other times will leave me stranded at a stoplight, making it a grave safety concern. After the engine does not restart you have to turn the car completely off put it in park turn it all the way back on and then continue driving. This is not related to any of the climate controls being onto high or energy being consumed. It seems to be a manufacturing defect.

Vehicle Safety Complaint – Automatic Sliding Door Injury to Child To the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, I am submitting this complaint to report what I believe may be a serious safety defect involving the automatic sliding door on my Honda vehicle. On June 9 at approximately 5:00 p.m., while the vehicle was parked in a residential driveway, the automatic sliding door severely injured my [XXX] son. He had unbuckled himself from his car seat and slid out of the vehicle as the automatic sliding door was closing. I witnessed the entire incident. As the door closed, his entire hand, as well as the skin on his leg, became trapped in the door. The automatic sliding door did not stop or reverse after encountering his hand and leg. Because the door is automatic, I was unable to immediately release him and had to wait for it to reopen before I could free him. Those moments felt incredibly long while my son was trapped and screaming in pain. When I was finally able to remove him from the door, his hand was severely injured, visibly deformed, and had significant swelling almost immediately after the incident. To my knowledge, nothing obstructed the normal operation of the door, and the automatic sliding door was being used in its normal operating mode. The fact that the door did not stop or reverse after trapping my son's hand is the primary reason I am submitting this complaint. Immediately after the accident, I took my son to an urgent care facility. The providers there instructed us to seek immediate evaluation by a pediatric orthopedic specialist, and we went directly to a pediatric orthopedist. He was diagnosed with a broken hand. This injury has resulted in medical expenses, significant emotional trauma for our family, and a complete loss of confidence in the safety of this vehicle. I purchased this Honda because I have three young children, including [XXX] twins. I chose this vehicle because I believed its safety and convenience feat INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

When the idle stop feature is engaged (it is by default), my van will die at stoplights, stop signs, or any extended stop. The van has been to the dealership multiple times, battery has been replaced. Service advisor informed me that this is a frequent and known issue with Odysseys. I’m just hoping for some help and/or guidance to remedy this potentially dangerous situation.

My 2024 Honda Odyssey has repeatedly failed to restart after the Auto Idle Stop system shuts the engine off at a red light. When I release the brake or press the accelerator, the engine does not restart as it should. The vehicle then shifts into Park or instructs me to place it in Park, and it is difficult to restart using the start button. This has left the vehicle disabled in an active traffic lane and creates a serious risk of being struck by another vehicle. I have been stuck at a red light with people honking at me and haven't been able to start the car for up to a minute. The problem is intermittent, and I do not know whether it is caused by the engine, electrical system, battery, starter, software, or power train. The Auto Idle Stop system should not shut the engine off if the vehicle may be unable to restart.

The Start/Stop function on the Honda Odyssey failed to re-start the vehicle after it was stopped at a traffic signal. The vehicle gave no advance notice of the issue. The vehicle defaulted the transmission into the "Park" position, however the electronics (radio, windows, etc.) all operated as normal. Simply pushing the ignition "On/Off" would do nothing and would NOT turn off the electronics. I had to press and hold the "On/Off" ( similar to a Ctl+Alt+"Delete") to hard shut off the vehicle entirely. I then had to place the key fob physically on the "On/Off" button to restart the vehicle. This is a significant safety concern being at a dead stop at a stoplight that may be green. We have had our van to the Honda dealer twice now within 3 weeks for the same issue. They cannot get it to duplicate any issues. The original diagnosis was that we had a loose ground connection at the battery. The battery, alternator, and starter were all diagnosed as in perfect working order. The tech tightened the loose ground, but the issue has not been resolved. There were zero warnings that there was an issue with the start/stop function.

This car continues to slam on the automatic brakes when there is no obstruction. There is no car in front of me today. It almost caused a major accident.
