  • ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE:HARD PARTS INTERNAL/MECHANICALCampaign 25V274000 · 24/04/2025

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with a 6.2L V8 gas engine. The connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure.

Risk: Engine failure increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect the engine, and as necessary, repair or replace the engine. For vehicles that pass inspection, dealers will add higher viscosity oil, install 6 oil fill cap, replace the oil filter, and update the owner's manual. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 18, 2025. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N252494000.

  • SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:BRAKE FLUID LOW WARNING: LAMPCampaign 24V674000 · 12/09/2024Over-the-air fix

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Escalade ESV vehicles. The electronic brake control module software may fail to display a warning light when a loss of brake fluid occurs. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."

Risk: Without a warning light, the vehicle may be driven with low brake fluid, which can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: The Electronic Brake Control Module (eBCM) software will be updated through an over-the-air (OTA) update or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 25, 2024. Owners can contact GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is N242447990.

vehicle parked for extended period, 7-10 days, entered vehicle on 12/05/25 and proceeded to start - immediately service transmission appeared in display, check engine light on, dash flashing and door locks going up and down and chiming of alarms. was able to place in reverse, backed up, put into drive and vehicle would move approx 5-8 ft, lock up and stop, start again and repeat, etc.. put vehicle in low1 was able to get back in driveway and parked. had vehicle towed to closest dealer who had a transmission specialist available and worked with GM warranty plus GM CarBravo warranty to address issues (multiple dealers refused or didn’t have available personnel and/or were multiple weeks out for repairs). called and advisor said i needed a new battery (22mo of a 36mo free battery replacement GM AC Delco) and to have transmission valve body replaced and no tcm, 3-5 days for part delivery and that this was under a GM Service bulletin # PIP6069 (which i pulled up online), stated this repair (valve body) fixed most vehicles but knew of a few instances where complete GM 10spd transmissions had to be replaced. glad this happened in my driveway versus while being on a long distance trip. waiting on part delivery and unable to use vehicle due safety issue with transmission.

Vehicle was operating on the interstate with cruise control activated. Time was approximately 9:15pm. Weather was fair with temperatures in the lower 60's. Speed was approximately 73mph. Without any audible or warning light notifications the engine stalled and all exterior lighting, power assisted braking and steering was lost. The emergency flashers were immediately activated to warn vehicles in nearby proximity of our emergency status. I tried to restart the engine(the transmission was showing to be in N)with no success. During the attempt to restart, the exterior lighting was restored. With the path of travel now visible, I was able to slow the vehicle to a safe speed and exit from the roadway onto the shoulder. Upon stopping, the vehicle was placed into P and OnStar was notified of the event. We remained in the vehicle until one of our friends was able to take us home. Onstar contacted AAA to remove the vehicle to the nearest GM dealership.

  • 10/28/2025· EXTERIOR LIGHTING

ChatGPT said: There is a design flaw with the automatic light function. When you turn the knob to disable the automatic lights to avoid blinding someone while parked, the knob returns to the auto position as expected. This is a good system to ensure that the next time you start the car, the lights are in auto again. The issue is with the way the system indicates what is happening to the driver. When the lights are set to auto, the “auto” indicator on the knob is illuminated. If you turn the knob to running lights or full lights, the corresponding indicator lights up as expected. However, when you turn the lights off, the indicator light returns to “auto” even though the lights are actually off. While the physical knob should return to auto to make sure the system resets properly at the next startup, the indicator should switch to the “off” position so the driver knows the lights are off. I drove off in the city and assumed my lights were on because the knob said auto, but I later realized they were off. This creates a serious safety hazard. There is no way to know in that situation if your lights are actually on by looking at the knob unless you cycle the lights again. A recall should be issued to change the software or replace the button to make sure that this is clear to the driver.

  • 08/30/2026· ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On August 20, 2026, while driving my 2024 GMC Yukon XL Denali equipped with the 6.2L V8 engine at approximately 70 mph on the interstate, the vehicle experienced a sudden and complete loss of motive power without adequate warning. The vehicle unexpectedly shifted into neutral and would no longer accelerate or maintain highway speed. This occurred in active interstate traffic and almost resulted in a serious accident as I attempted to maneuver the vehicle out of the flow of traffic. The engine would not restart, and the vehicle had to be towed to a GMC dealership. The GMC dealership subsequently diagnosed that the engine had locked up and determined that the engine requires complete replacement. This failure created an immediate and significant safety hazard for me, my family, and surrounding motorists. My vehicle is affected by the 6.2L engine recall, and I am extremely concerned about the safety and reliability of the proposed replacement engine. I have become aware of reports from other owners alleging failures involving replacement engines as well, including similar sudden losses of propulsion. I am concerned that replacing the engine may not adequately address the underlying safety risk if replacement engines are experiencing similar failures. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate not only the original engine failure, but also whether replacement engines used as a remedy are adequately correcting the defect. A sudden engine lockup and complete loss of propulsion at interstate speeds presents a serious risk of collision, injury, or death.

The contact owns a 2024 GMC Yukon XL. The contact stated that upon taking the vehicle to the dealer to be repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V274000 (Engine and Engine Cooling), the contact was informed that the vehicle passed the inspection and no repair was needed. However, the vehicle experienced engine failure approximately seven months later. While driving 50 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. There was no warning light illuminated. The driver pulled over, restarted the vehicle, and resumed normal driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer the following morning, where the Electronic Control Module was replaced under warranty; however, the failure recurred while driving 70 MPH three weeks later. No warning light was illuminated. The driver pulled over, restarted the vehicle, and resumed driving; however, the vehicle failed to exceed 40 MPH and shut off. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine, radiator and seal kit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The contact was concerned that the recall remedy failed to prevent the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a buyback was requested, but the request was denied, and the contact was referred to the dealer for additional assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 27,800.

We're in the waiting period for our 3rd engine. 1st engine failure, while driving on interstate at 70+ MPH, engine stopped running, causing a very unsafe condition for family and surrounding vehicles. Engine failure 2 days later, towed to dealership for inspection, replacement engine was installed ~4 weeks later. 2nd engine failure, while driving on interstate at 75+ MPH, engine seemed underpowered and would rev upwards of 6000+RPMs, not exactly unsafe, but not usual operating conditions either. Returned to dealer, upon inspection, total engine replacement was recommended.

  • 06/26/2025· POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

I am filing this complaint regarding GM Recall N252494000 (NHTSA Campaign Number 25V274) for my 2024 GMC Yukon XL (VIN: [XXX] ). The issue involves a serious engine defect related to the crankshaft and/or connecting rods, which can result in catastrophic engine failure and loss of propulsion while driving—a clear and dangerous safety risk. I first became concerned when early reports of this issue began circulating publicly. As a father of young children, I became increasingly uneasy that my vehicle could potentially fail while in operation. Receiving GM’s formal recall letter only validated my growing concern for my family’s well-being. It’s deeply frustrating and unsettling. The notice states that parts to repair or replace the engine are not currently available, and offers no clear timeframe for when a remedy will be provided. I feel like we are being strung along while forced to continue using a vehicle that may become unsafe at any moment. This delay is unacceptable. There has been no offer of a loaner vehicle, no proactive communication from the dealer, and no assurance from GM that they are prioritizing driver safety over logistics. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate whether GM is doing enough to provide timely remedies to affected customers. I also urge you to consider whether interim solutions (such as alternative transportation or more aggressive recall execution) should be mandated. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I perform all maintenance on my vehicles, I have previously been a ASE Certified Master Technician, so I know engines and vehicles very well. Vehicle is outside of current engine recall window due to the engine build date being July 15, 2024. Engine was over maintained, oil and oil filter changed 6 times in 17,732 miles, first oil and filter change performed at 544 miles, when 5W30 oil was put in engine, installed a magnetic drain plug and installed Filter Mags on oil filter. Ran 5W30 oil for 2 oil changes, then moved to 0W40 oil. Oil analysis performed for each oil change. Results were looking acceptable up until the next to last oil change at 13,801 miles. Changed engine oil and filter on 6/12/2026 @17,732 miles. Found a heavy build up of metal particles on the magnetic drain plug and when oil filter was cut open there was a heavy build up of metal particles where the Filter Mags were located and the filter element had fine metal particles in entire engine oil filter element. The engine has made no noise and is still running, but based on the evidence the engine is currently failing and if I would have continued to drive it, the engine would likely lock up on the highway. CLEARLY GM DID NOT solve the crankshaft problem July 1, 2024 and CLEARLY using a higher viscosity oil like 0W40 will not keep these engines from failing. If I would have continued to drive the vehicle and if I would have not changed oil and found metal in the oil, this engine would have absolutely failed on the highway. This vehicle has over 80% highway use.

2024 Engine failed while moving at 70mph out of state. De-accelerated rapid as I was changing lanes and was almost hit by two vehicles. Once of the interstate, I made it to the shoulder of an exit ramp that was a blind spot. Cars exiting to this ramp almost always had to veer to keep from hitting me. I purchased this vehicle in October 2024, never knew anything about a recall, was never disclosed to me about recalls. To this day, if I enter my VIN, there is no recall and I have never received any communication stating this vehicle was on recall. I complained to the dealer twice about unusual noise from vehicle, which they dismissed. I took it back to the dealer because my oil light indicated I was "low", this oil is too low, my concern was a leak. Took into GMC dealer, they stated we did not see any leak. Now this. Problem, GA law states in order to qualify for buyback, 24,000 miles or under 2 years. Well, I have 24,986...this automatically disqualifies me. SMH The options I was given are all a NO WIN for me! I was almost killed on the interstate, not to mention the level of stress and issues this car nightmare has caused me. $100k vehicle and I still owe 87K

I would have never bought this vehicle knowing gmc knew they had an iossue with the ngine. My resale value will be hurt big time by all; the negative publicity. I hear they want to put zero 40 thicker oil to patcvh a sick engine ,,thats a band aid on a engine wiith lo0ose clearances. and why is the 2025 6.2 going top keep using zero twenty and not zero 40 oil. I [XXX]i think , this engine in this gmc is noisy in the motrning also when cold . I think i am gettingb a [XXX] story . I only have 13200 miles and the car is still leaking after 3 visits . Purchase this Vehicle November 1st 2025 as a GM certified used vehicle. Had several issues with the camera system including the backup camera. Would go offline and not be usable for days. Vehicle went back to shop several times for this with no resolution. Now February 18th 2026 at approximately 630PM EST (after sunset) on the way into work traveling on the highway the engine lost power and engine shutdown. Vehicle shifted into neutral with the indication to press the start button in order to shift into Drive. This cause all of the lights to shutdown when it tried to start the engine. I was barely able to pull this over to the shoulder before I lost forward motion. Narrow shoulder. Tried to restart again with the same results. Call towing company. They attempted to jump start vehicle. Same results. All power shutdown. Truck was loaded onto flatbed and towed to dealership. Dealership states bad battery. Got authorization to replace battery from the dealer in which I purchased the truck. hey attempted to start and then it burned out the main fuse. They determined that the engine had seized and they were going to replace the engine. I looked up to find that GM had performed the engine oil replacement procedure in June of 2025. This vehicle is listed in the "recall" for defective L87 engines. Clearly changing the oil had no effect to remedy the issue. I have no faith that the new engine will not fail the same way this one did.

My vehicle stalled while driving on a busy highway & I had no option but to pull over, which left me & my family in a very dangerous position. Had to remove my daughter's wheelchair onto a tow truck as the vehicle had no power to use the hoist for her powerchair. Again, on the side of a busy road! Towed the vehicle to a GM dealership, who stated there was catastrophic engine failure & the engine had to be replaced. Had no way to transport my daughter until I got a new engine since her hoist was stuck at the dealership.

On March 14th the 6.2L engine was making a loud noise so I took it straight to the dealership and dropped it off. It was determined to be a failed engine. I have not been able to use my vehicle for 5 weeks now.

The car has made a high pitched metallic rattle on cold start ever since I received it. I have taken it into the dealership multiple times for this and have had the lifters in the engine replaced but they never addressed the other noise, which I have video evidence of. The car died at 24,740 miles on the odometer in the middle of a highway in the middle of nowhere. The vehicle started to feel like it was braking on acceleration, there were no warning lights. The vehicle just lost acceleration power and I had to coast to the shoulder. Luckily I had time to pull over without interference from other traffic. Once on the side of the road I tried to crank the car again and a very loud metallic sound happened that sounded like I threw a wrench in a fan. The car lost electrical power very shortly after. I called onstar for help and she asked if I could shift the car into neutral which I could not. They had problems finding anyone that wasn’t hours out that could come tow my car and suggested that I try to find an alternate method of transportation since a wrecker service probably wouldn’t transport my entire family. Uber was not around to get me, Lyft was not around to get me and there was no taxi service. I had to rely on the local fire department to rescue us as it was hours with myself, my two children and my dog on the side of the road in 90F heat. Once at the dealership they confirmed it was indeed a catastrophic engine failure and I am currently waiting months for a back ordered engine with a rental I’m paying partially out of pocket for, in a car that’s entirely way too small for my family with no ETA on the engine in sight. I know multiple people personally who this has also happened to, same exact scenario and same exact engine just different model years.

    1) The engine began making unusual noises. I had the vehicle towed to the dealer. It is currently at Zimbrick Eastside in Madison Wisconsin. 2) The problem was noticed prior to my family being put at risk only because I noticed the noise happening while we were parked. 3) The problem has been confirmed. The dealer is doing a complete engine replacement. However, as of today, it has been at their location for over 30 days. 4) To my knowledge the vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer or any other 3rd party representatives. As of today, there has been no correspondence between myself and the manufacturer. 5) There were no warning lights, messages or symptoms prior to the problem. The problem first occurred on Saturday [XXX]. The vehicle has 19462 miles and we are the first owners. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

V8 6.2L ENGINE on [XXX] at approximately [XXX] exactly 10 months after purchasing the Denali at 9,484 miles my Denali started to make loud noises and when we got to the stop light [XXX] and [XXX] in Long Beach California the Denali started to shake violently and ultimately shut down in the middle of the road. My daughter and I were traveling on the way home from the doctor’s office and when Denali shut down, I called AAA, and they advised me to call 911 since Denali locked up in park and could not get it in neutral to push the truck to the side of the road. This was very dangerous as vehicles were speeding past us. We stayed in the vehicle until an officer arrived. Then about 15mins later the tow truck arrived and made the area safe with cones and flashing lights. I did put my hazard lights on but in the middle of the day it was very hard to see. AAA was able to disengage the parking to neutral as he mentioned that he just towed another Denali off the road. This is a huge concern for my family and me. I didn’t get to see how he did it because I was with my daughter safe in the Tow Truck. AAA then towed the truck to Penske GMC in Cerrito Auto Square and arrived at 1:48pm. Service advisor then said to leave at garage door and will assess the vehicle tomorrow morning. Albert, the Service advisor, proceeded with giving me paperwork for the Denali and an Enterprise rental car that was located across the street. We had to walk because the shuttle was down (another concern). Albert the service advisor called me the next day [XXX] and advised that the first auto technician suggested the motor seized up. I was advised to wait until the Engine Specialist assessed the motor. Albert the service advisor calls me March 5,2025 @ 11:15am and Engine Specialist did confirm that the motor did seize up and will need a new one. The motor will take approximately 2 weeks to arrive and 3 days to install. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

This is a Post-Remedy Failure of Recall 25V-274 (GMC 6.2L L87 Engine). Following a full engine replacement performed by the dealer under this safety recall, the vehicle has suffered a catastrophic electrical compromise. The vehicle is currently throwing codes P2534 (Low Ignition Voltage) and U3018 (BCM Communication). Safety Hazards: The vehicle experiences sudden loss of power, engine stalling at highway speeds, and total failure of the exterior turn signals (hyper-flash). The AC system has been disabled by the Body Control Module due to low voltage, creating a hazard in high temperatures. This vehicle fits the exact profile of NHTSA Recall Query RQ26-001 and Engineering Analysis EA25-007. The manufacturer's remedy for the safety recall has failed to restore the vehicle to a safe operating condition, and the dealership is attempting to charge diagnostic fees to investigate their own defective recall workmanship.

Today while exiting an off ramp. I stopped for traffic signal. Truck immediately lost power and shifted to neutral. I placed my 4 ways 1. Put the people back in park restarted the ignition truck fired up. This is concerning as i've never had a vehicle with five thousand miles brand new shut off on me.

The engine had a bearing fail causing the engine to knock and make loud noises. The engine has been replaced and is at GMC corporate investigation center. GMC installed another engine that is also doing the same thing 150 miles after it was replaced. My families safety was put at risk because the motor could have locked up or exploded with us in the car causing a crash or possible fatality. Yes the problem was found at the dealer and caused them to investigate which is when they found the failing bearing. Yes, GMC corporation has the failed components and identified the engine needs replaced. They have yet to comment on the second engine that needs replaced. There are no warning lights to identify this issue, The lack of notification from GMC could cause drivers to be hurt by not knowing their car is failing.

The contact owns a 2024 GMC Yukon XL. While the contact's wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. In addition, the contact's wife noticed an abnormal knocking sound before the engine seized. The check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and DTC: P0305 (lifter on cylinder 5); was retrieved, and the intake valve detached and damaged the camshaft. The contact was informed that the lifters and related parts, camshaft, and the coolant pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed with engine failure due to the metal shavings found in the oil. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not diagnosed. In addition, the failure had occurred within 2,500 miles of the initial repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure ,and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 14,589.

I purchased my new GMC Yukon XL in October 2024. In February, with about 9,000 miles on it, I was approaching a highway intersection and beginning to brake. My vehicle put itself into Neutral, and then shut off -- while I was still moving. No dash lights came on, except for a message stating that I needed to press the brake and restart my vehicle. I took my vehicle into the dealership where I purchased it and they kept it for 8 days. They were unable to reproduce the issue and didn't do anything to mitigate the problem except for doing a "radio update" and adding lubricant to a window track. I was told I have to wait until it happens again and try to record it.

Total engine failure at 12,307 miles without warning. The engine turned off while driving on the Interstate - a message appeared on the instrument panel that said "Press start". We coasted to the shoulder and the car was towed to the dealership where the diagnosis was a failed L87 V8 engine. I'm aware of 3 others with the same engine (2024 Denali, 2024 Escalade, 2024, Silverado) that have also experienced this issue. After some research, this appears to be under review by the the NHTSA. This was a dangerous situation with an engine failure at highway speeds, at night, on an unlit well-traveled Interstate with 4 children in the vehicle. The dealership stated that my repair is behind 2 vehicles awaiting the same engine replacement.
