⚠ Park outside — urgent recall
NHTSA has flagged a recall on this vehicle as severe (fire risk — park away from structures). Contact a dealer immediately; recall repairs are free.
- TRAILER HITCHESCampaign 23V181000 · 17/03/2023Park outside
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019-2023 Santa Fe, 2021-2023 Santa Fe HEV, 2022-2023 Santa Fe Plug-in HEV and Santa Cruz vehicles potentially equipped with a tow hitch harness installed as original equipment, or purchased as an accessory through a Hyundai dealership. Water accumulation on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board (PCB) may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire.
Risk: A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
Fix: Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the remedy is completed. Dealers will install a new fuse and wire extension kit as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed starting May 16, 2023. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 244. This recall is an expansion of previous recall number 22V-633.

This is my 2nd complaint re: the same issue. Loss of power during driving. Unable to accelerate. I need to pull over shut off the engine and turn it back on.
- 12/21/2022· ENGINE
Joined a Santa Cruz Owners blog immediately after purchase. This safety defect involves BOTH the 2022 and 2023 - ALL models. The front grill (especially the lower section) has no mesh and the openings are too big. Road debris entering this area can disable the Engine Cooling System and/or the vehicles Air Conditioning System. A protective mesh or screen has to be designed by Hyundai, to fit behind the grill, to deflect large rocks and objects that could disable the motor.

11/14, 2023 Drove about 2-3 miles when all warning lights on the dash came on like a Christmas tree. I was coming to a 4 way stop, both roads were 55 mph speed limits. There was a car behind me and another coming to a stop from the left. I wanted to get across the intersection to pull over and assess the situation. While trying to get across the intersection there was no response to the throttle pedal, ended up idling through the intersection at 4 mph. After getting across I pulled over and turned the truck off, let it sit for maybe a minute or so. Then I restarted and the only warning light that stayed on was the service engine warning light. The throttle showed response at that time, I started driving slowly and eventually felt it was ok to gain speed. Was able to drive at posted speed limits. 11/1582023 I took truck to Hyundai service department. 11/17/2023 Hyundai service advisor called and stated the tech support line told them to try replacing the wire harness because of erratic readings. The harness was on backorder until 11/27/23. 12/4/2023 Service advisor told me the harness was now on national backorder until 12/7/23. Again he said he will contact me when the part comes in. Truck went into service on Nov 15, 2023 and now Dec 17, 2023 tech line suggested wire harness to be replaced is still not available.
- 12/13/2024· POWER TRAIN
Transmission failed to transfer adequate power to the wheels when the accelerator was pressed from a full stop at the entry point of an intersection. This led to the the vehicle slowly entering the intersection for 2 feet over w seconds. Transmission then transferred full power to wheels. Vehicle was then driven to the entrance of the nearest parking lot, which required a left turn. Vehicle again had only a partial transfer of power to the transmission, leaving the vehicle temporarily blocking part of the oncoming lane which could be dangerous if there was any oncoming traffic. A "check transmission oil" message flashed on the driver screen; however, this vehicle has a sealed transmission and it is impossible for a driver to check. Vehicle was then taken to the nearest dealership for evaluation.

Rough Idle, Loss of engine power, and cylinder misfire on 2023 Santa Cruize Limited approx. 26,700 miles(currently) purchased new 04-28-2023 at Hyundai in North Knoxville, TN. Vehicle is stored in insulated garage at all times when not in use. 1) Approx. 2k-4k mi vehicle was having rough idling upon start up & have to sit, wait several minutes to allow vehicle ample time to warm up like a cold natured, carbureted engine. Dealer was unable to replicate at vehicle service intervals(60 miles away from home). 2) During Oct 23 approx. 24k-25k experienced 3 occurrences of loss of power while accelerating to merge into traffic, toggled through drive modes, put in manual, then back. Power came back each time. 3) 11/12/2023 Second start of the day, immediately upon startup was running extremely rough in idle, very little response. Check engine light is on, made video of issue & documented miles: 26,121. Turned off, then back on, issue was resolved. 4) 11/15/2023 26,373 miles: Second start of the day, same issue described in "#3", extremely rough idle, check engine light, & sounds coming from tailpipe that can be identified as "drone". Opened hood, inspected intake components, removed engine cover to check for burned or odd colored wires to injectors & coil packs, but no evidence of fouled or damaged wires. Turned vehicle off, then back on & the issue cleared. Contacted dealer where purchased, advised to bring vehicle in for diagnostic evaluation. 5) 11/16/2023 26,606 miles: Again, second start of the day, check engine light, extremely rough idle & louder "drone" sound. Left vehicle in the state that it was in, drove to dealer from work(25miles away) to be diagnosed while issues were occurring. While driving vehicle had very little power, experienced odor while driving, shudder, & jolting during accelerations. Diagnostic eval. revealed misfire in cylinder #3, dealer inspected coil packs, wires, & removed spark plug. Currently being serviced, issued loaner by dealer.

All flats were displayed on the pressure dash warning it is unknown to me why multiple flats could be a malfunction of all wheel drive system rt wheel turning different from rest of wheels?
- 11/08/2022· POWER TRAIN
On 11/6/2022, while driving the vehicle, it suffered a loss of power and would not accelerate. I was in the vehicle with my wife and 2 young children who felt the vehicle shudder. I was able to drive the vehicle to my home. On 11/7/2022, upon starting the vehicle, I received an error notice from the internal diagnostics system: transmission control P087501 POWERTRAIN TCU. System advised to have vehicle serviced immediately. Vehicle was towed to nearest Hyundai dealership. Further information awaited.

- 10/27/2022· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS
Driver's seat power height adjustment does not work. Brought it to the dealership and they claimed they verified the issue and it was because of something I had under the seat. They claimed to have corrected it, and verified operation, but it still doesn't work. When confronted about it, the service manager now insists it's the switch that's the problem, and he is ordering a new one. This issue prevents me from adjusting the height of my seat, so I sit so high that the rest view mirror blocks my field of view. This remains unresolved as of 10/26/22.
- 10/27/2022· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
Less than a week after purchasing the vehicle, the audio stopped working. All warnings had no audible indication, including lane departure, rear collision, front collision, blind spot, and back seat. Looking up the issue online, it seems this is common on the trim of my vehicle (Limited). I brought it to the dealership for repair. When I got it back, they said there was a loose connection in the back of the radio.

Lack of power upon accelerating. I could slowly get car up to 40 MPH however when trying to accelerate it would lose power. I had to pull over for faster traffic to pass.
- 10/15/2024· POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
On 3 separate occasions this has occurred . When accelerating, the engine or power train completely loses all propulsion. Twice I was starting a left hand turn and crossing oncoming traffic. On one occasion I was turning right onto a 50 MPH highway and quickly veered off the road onto the berm. The only item on dash board flashing on the third incident was the cruise control preset and it was flashing 20. At the time I was not using the cruise control and I did not set it for 20. No dash board warning lights lit during the first two losses of power. I reported it to the dealer. Today I had a maintenance appointment and inspection at the dealer. After that inspection, they informed me that they found no codes to identify the issue. I should let them know if it continues. My 3 failures happened at approximately 10,000, 15,000 and 20,000 miles. My safety and that of my passenger were most definitely affected each and every time. After 30 seconds to one minute the full functionality returns as if it never happened.

Hyundai Santa Cruz with transmission problems. 5 attempts to repair and manufacture failed to. Last time, vehicle had a sudden transmission failure while driving. Car stop responding to acceleration and transmission was not switching gears, that could had cause loss of control, especially in high-speed or high-traffic situations. Luckily it was very early in the morning, not much traffic and before (0.3 miles) from taking a high-speed interstate. Vehicle is not safe to drive and according to a research I made, other vehicles of same brand, model and year are facing same issues.

The contact stated that the vehicle failed to raise and lower as the shock absorbers needed to perform. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed, and it was determined that the rear shocks had failed to allow the vehicle to self-level. The rear shocks were replaced; however, the failure persisted. The contact reported the persistence of the failure and was advised to go to another dealer, Greg Hubler Hyundai (6200 W Hometown Blvd, Muncie, IN 47304) who also replaced the rear struts. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and opened a case. The failure mileage was approximately 7,000.

Vehicle has 2k miles on it and it experiences a loss of power from a stop when accelerating. The vehicle shakes as if it is not getting enough gas similar to a manual transmission if you took your foot off the clutch when the vehicle was in 1st gear. It happens about once a week at random times, no codes produced. Dealership advises with no codes displayed and their inability to recreate the concern there is nothing the manufacturer will allow them to do. Dealership has had the vehicle for over 3 weeks. This is becoming a more common issue, yet nothing is being done by manufacturer to address for consumers. If my wife or I are operating the vehicle and cannot get out of the way of an oncoming vehicle due to a sudden loss of acceleration this poses a great risk for serious bodily harm or injury.

A police report was not filed. The fire department extinguished the fire. The vehicle was taken to a savage yard, and the insurance will then have the vehicle towed to a body shop. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and they informed the contact that they would inspect the vehicle, and they also offered to buy back the vehicle. Recently, he got an email informing him that they are not going to buy back the vehicle. The failure mileage was 18,000.

On [XXX], I went out to start my 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz (SC) to leave work to go home. It was difficult to start, however, it started. As I entered [XXX] , i was nearly rear ended by another car, because my SC lost all acceleration. I turned on my hazards for SAFETY and then began to try to accelerate again and was only able to get up to 45 MPH and then was turning 4,000 RPM. I limped my SC home where I had it towed to a local Hyundai dealer as it has roughly 38,000 miles. The dealership had it for 3 days, but couldn't duplicate the issue, so no repairs were done. The Hyundai Santa Cruz has KNOWN transmission issues and the fact I was nearly rear ended could've caused a nasty wreck, resulting in more damage or even a fatality. I reported the issue to Hyundai customer service on the 11th of September (Case #[XXX]). However, in the response from Hyundai, basically saying they "experiencing a high e-mail volume" and responses may be delayed. As of 9/13/2025, I have not received a call or email from Hyundai's customer service. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Rain sensor wiper function. On this setting, even in consistent rain, the system will jump to slow wiper intervals all the way to the fastest setting...with no change in the amount or rain hitting the windshield. It seems confused and searching for the proper speed. It becomes dangerous when it arrives at a very slow intermittent setting for rain that requires a faster interval for adequate removal for the driver to see properly.

Car will not start properly and shuts itself off after which a strong odor of burning plastic is present in the vehicle. It will periodically do this almost once a day if not every other day. I have taken it in to the dealer 4 times last time they had my car for two weeks and could not replicate porblem because they only drive it 5 miles and it will not happen unless vehicle is being daily driven. I have found numerous other owners with the same complaint. Hyundai will not authorize shop to work on car and advises them to release it to me each time. They only attempted to fix once and gave it back to me all over times. The car is at the dealer again and they will not work on it till october to try to find the problem again. I will not drive this car due to risk of car deciding to turn it self off or start on fire due to whatever is melting when this happenns car is still at red mcombs northwest as of today.

I went to my Hyundai dealer because the tunneau cover is taking in a lot of water when it rains. All sides are taking in the water. This even occurs when I go to the car wash. The whole person of the cover is to keep things dry and from things flying out of the bed of the truck. The dealer spent four hours trying to resolve it and contacted Hyundai tech line for assistance. They were told that they know of the issue, but there is no fix for it because enough people have not registered a complaint about this situation. While it might not be a hazard, it makes the bed unable to be used. I have to have it shop vacuumed to be able to put things into it.

For the entire day (XXX) my car would go limp when trying to shift gears with an automatic transmission. At least 3-5 second delays when pressing on gas and NOTHING happens. Very dangerous when driving in traffic as you cannot get out of the way of oncoming traffic! It finally moves very slowly as if you are in the wrong gear. I would say that the 2 and 4 gears it would not go into at all. As I floored the accelerator, I would see my MPG rating go sky high as no gas was getting into engine. The clutch was slipping when trying to accelerate. Then I got a main display message that said "A possible condition with your Transmission Control System has been detected. A full system check is recommended to be done when convenient, Please contact your local dealership to schedule an appointment". The yellow CHECK ENGINE symbol also came on and stayed lit on the dash. This problem continued for an hour as I drove the car and got home safely. I drove it again an hour later and the same problem persisted again. I also received a Hyundai Bluelink message that a problem had been detected with my Transmission Control System and gave me error code P1C2D03. You may want to look at Hyundai Recall 236 (which only covered 22 Santa Cruz models, even though everything is the same in 23 model and the recall should be extended by you). Also look at Hyundai TSB 22-AT-009H which is my exact issue. These 23 Santa Cruz need to be recalled and fixed before someone gets killed. Went to Hyundai dealer the next day, and the car was operating normally although the CHECK ENGINE light was still on. They performed a software update and said if the problem continues that they will need to replace transmission. I have no confidence that this problem is fixed. truck dash light would fade/blacken at which time none of safety features would work. This is an intermittent problem but seem like it has happened many times with the Santa Cruz's in general, so Hyundai was aware of problem. They don't seem to fix problems. Truck stopped shifting corrrectly with 11550 miles. Would get stuck in 8th gear or 2nd gear. Shifting into manual mode produced no response. I brought it to the dealer 6/12 and upon receiving the P1c2d03 code, they told me it would be a hp oil pump. Looking the issue up, it seems the 2022's had this issue and required a new trans, not oil pump. A week later (6/20) dealer ship calls and says it's fixed with the oil pump. I go to collect my truck and don't make it out of the lot before it stumbles and gets stuck in 2nd gear again. Left it with the dealer again, but haven't heard anything since, and they won't return my calls. Currently 7/9 with no response.

My new 2023 Santa Cruz lost power on freeway. The dealer performed a transmission software update; however, the issue was significantly worse after the upgrade, causing me to lose power again on a busy freeway. The vehicle was towed back to dealer. Today I was told the transmission needs replacement. Transmission failure is a dangerous safety issue. It’s my understanding that the 2022 Santa Cruz was recalled for transmission issues. Please do the same for the 2023 model so others don’t experience the terror of suddenly dropping power while surrounded by 65 mph+ cars. Thank you.
- 06/28/2023· POWER TRAIN
The dual clutch transmission frequently, though not consistently, malfunctions under acceleration. Typically, when accelerating from a stop, when the transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd gear, the clutch will slip causing a sudden loss of acceleration and shaking of the vehicle. Hyundai calls this a "judder". This causes a safety issue to myself and others because of the unexpected sudden loss of power. If this occurs while crossing another street or pulling out into traffic, it could lead to a collision. I took the vehicle in to Hyundai to have it fixed. They claim to have performed what they called a "judder test" and said that the car passed the test and didn't need any repairs. There have been no warning lights or codes. It is clear to me that Hyundai's testing procedure is inadequate to detect the issue, probably just so they don't have to pay for as many repairs.

My issue was that I would press the gas pedal, but once I got to 20 mph the engine would stop giving power and I couldn’t get up to speed. My top speed was 30 mph, even though I would give it gas to speed up. This was the worst after I would come to a stop at a traffic light. As I pressed the gas to gain speed, it would struggle to gain speed in the middle of the intersection, causing the cars behind me to be frustrated and aggressively tailgate. I was able to find a parking lot, parked and turned the car off for approximately 20 minutes. After that I turned the car back on, I went for a test drive and there was no problem at all. When this all happened no warning lights came on. Very concerned that this will happen again, as I have no clue what triggered this incident. I have reported this to my dealer, but as this just happened today nothing has been inspected.

Upon pulling onto a street, the vehicle lost power. Pressing on the gas pedal provided no power or faster RPM's. No warning lights were activated. I pulled in and out of two different side streets with very little power. Parked and shut off the vehicle. Restarted and the power returned. This is very unsafe as I was pulling out on a busy street and was unable to accelerate faster than 20 mph. Contacted the dealership and they cannot see the vehicle for nearly a month from now.

The most major problem that occurred on 2-3 different occasions is that the emergency braking system activated for no reason on one occasion, almost causing a Rear end collision with a person behind me. No one to my sides, and in front of me on all of the occasions. Headlights on the automatic, setting on a bright sunny day, will turn off and on no change in lighting which annoys other drivers because they think I’m flashing them. After starting the car in Drive the first time I break and then go to accelerate there’s a delay in the acceleration. as well as other times while driving. so it seems that recall NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V746000 also effects 2023 santa cruz with the dct. While driving got transmission error on gauge once slowed by traffic vehicle would not shift and would just rev, after almost being hit by another car. figure out if you let it rev and then let off gas pedal car would upshift. But this was done by trial and error. this has happened 3 times and first 2 dealer says nothing wrong. code was p193b79. I think the recall to fix these transmissions should be expanded to 2023 and probably 2024 cars.
- 05/26/2023· ELECTRICAL SYSTEMFire
On May 1, 2023 I pulled my 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz into my garage at about 5pm and fyi It was blustery outside and had been raining & snowing all day. At about 5:15 pm I heard a loud bang followed by another. I looked out the back door and saw that the whole garage was completely engulfed in flames. My garage is attached to my home and the fire spread fast especially with 40 to 50 mile per hour winds feeding it. The only thing we could do was to get out with with our 2 dogs and nothing else. The consensus among fire professionals are that my vehicle started the fire. So here I sit with absolutely nothing!

- 05/20/2025· AIR BAGS
1- Air bag light randomly comes on and off. 2- Today (5.20.25) I brought it to dealer. Dealer said they disconnected the sensor switch and cleaned it, then reconnected and light went off (covered under warranty). 3- I got in the truck, started it, and light was off. 4- I drove one block and airbag light came on again. 5- Returned to dealer, who asked me to leave the car with them. 6- Dealer called and said they will replace air bag (did not specify which one). I hope this solves the problem. 7- I checked a Santa Cruz forum: [XXX] and it looks like A LOT of people have the same problem. Some report it's the sensor assembly underneath the seat. - 05/13/2024· POWER TRAIN
On 3/22/2024 I was driving my 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz with 19k miles about 30 mph. My transmission suddenly became jerky without warning and acted liked it did not want to downshift, staying in higher RPMs. When it did decide to downshift, it lurched the vehicle badly. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the incident. A few seconds after it happened, the check engine light came on, along with a diagnostic notification on my infotainment screen. This indicated a powertrain issue. I then received a notification on my Hyundai Bluelink App regarding a powertrain issue: "Transmission Control System problem, please see dealer".I dropped the vehicle off 3/27/2024 and As of this writing on 5/13/2024 my vehicle has been sitting at a local dealership for almost 50 consecutive days. In the 5 day period between 3/22-3/27 I was instructed it was OK to keep driving the vehicle until drop-off. I experienced 2 more instances of a rough downshift in that time. When I dropped the vehicle off on 3/27, I was told I could take the vehicle home and drive it until they figure out what to do with it and receive instruction from Hyundai Corporate. This was an extremely reckless and dangerous thing to tell me I feel. The local dealer claimed they had not seen this issue before, had to wait for Hyundai Corporate to instruct them on what to do, but a transmission replacement was possible. Eventually they were instructed to replace the transmission oil pump and do a software update. Research shows the 2022 model Santa Cruz had a recall for the transmission oil pump. Recall # 22V746000 "transmission oil pump malfunction, which can result in a complete loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash". Yes I believe mine and my spouse's safety, and other's was/is at risk, as this happened as I was driving and there was a previous recall for this exact part. I have informed Hyundai Corporate America of the issue and waiting for responses and resolutions from them.
- 05/08/2023· EXTERIOR LIGHTING
*Headlights are not shining correctly. Traveling on a two lane highway, a big black spot covers the whole left lane, about 75 yards. No black spot on traveling lane Driving on a curve road in a subdivision, your eyes follows the black spot , instead of paying attention the road. This is a bad scenario for a accident. I do not know if oncoming traffic sees the black spot or not. *This has a known safety issue that was not disclosed to me at the time of purchase. It has been well documented all over the Internet since 2021. The service manager and sales manager confirmed that it is a manufacturer issue. This particular model cannot be resolved.
