  • 12/28/2025· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

Dear National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, I am submitting this email to formally report a potential vehicle safety defect involving my 2022 Toyota Corolla. Vehicle information: - Make/Model: 2022 Toyota Corolla - In-service date: 08/18/2022 My vehicle sustained significant wiring damage caused by rodents. Toyota has denied warranty and financial assistance, characterizing the issue as an “outside influence.” However, according to what I read online, modern vehicles —including Toyota models—use soy-based or bio-based wiring insulation, which is widely documented to attract rodents. The damage affected critical electrical wiring, creating potential safety hazards including loss of vehicle function and increased fire risk. This is not merely cosmetic damage but impacts essential vehicle systems. The foreseeability of rodent attraction due to wiring materials raises concerns of a design-related safety defect and failure to adequately warn consumers. Toyota has stated there are no recalls or customer support programs addressing this issue, despite recurring reports from vehicle owners nationwide. I respectfully request that NHTSA review this matter as a potential safety defect and consider whether further investigation is warranted. Thank you for your attention to this safety concern. Sincerely,

My engine stalled while driving. My low tire pressure light came on and an hour or so later I was turning left at a light. My left turn signal was on. Suddenly my car stalled and the message that stated Put in park, steering power low showed on screen. Put car in park and restarted and it started right up. Dealer said no codes and could not replicate. Only 18,000 miles on car. Huge safety issue!!!!!

  • 11/26/2025· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Touchscreen/Infotainment Display randomly shut down while driving without warning and no longer functions. This could not be reset by holding the power button or disconnecting the vehicle battery. The backup camera still works, and the radio can be heard when the power button is pressed, but the display remains on a black screen and none of the controls on the steering wheel or headunit work. At night, the lights on the buttons for the multimedia display turn on and off every 10 seconds which is extremely distracting and has the potential to cause an accident. This defective part serves as a safety issue, as this is where critical maintenance and hybrid battery power related errors displayed. In addition there are many critical controls locked behind the screen related to door locks, hybrid battery usage, and other vehicle controls, as well as personal data that may now be at risk and unable to be able to be deleted. Vehicle was inspected by a Lia Toyota of Rockland Dealership Service department and determined to be a faulty display, requiring a compete unit replacement. The quoted cost is $2500, and despite my car having only 35500 miles, this is not covered under any warranty due to being outside the 36 month time window. The multimedia display in this car is a critical component and is just as vital to the car as the engine/transmission. It is a shame that Toyota reliability is a thing of the past.

  • 11/17/2023· STEERING

My daughter was driving yesterday when the steering wheel locked suddenly. She was sideswiped by another vehicle that hit the wheel well and forced the steering to work again. The occupants of the other vehicle did not pull over so she drove on to my work where she broke down crying and explained what happened. I took the car in yesterday to diagnose any issues with the car and was told that this is a feature that Toyota has when the car hits something like a pothole at faster speeds. My daughter could not have been going terribly fast considering it was 5:00 p.m. in Los Angeles on Olympic Blvd. during the height of rush hour; however, most concerning is I was told that according to diagnostics this is the third time the car had done this due to "aggressive acceleration". They told me that the jolt from the other car hitting the wheel well must have reset the sensor so the steering wheel could start working again. They said this is a normal safety feature on all Toyota hybrids. I asked for more clarification on what exactly we should do to prevent this happening in the future and they said to accelerate slowly so the sensor has time to keep up. This seems like an incredibly unsafe feature. I emailed Toyota's corporate office for clarification but received nothing to date. I am extremely nervous to drive my car and especially to have my 16 year old daughter drive it! I do have the diagnostic printout the Toyota Service Department gave me yesterday and am happy to share if you would find it useful.

  • 09/03/2026· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE

I am reporting a severe safety defect regarding a failed engine coolant bypass valve on my 2022 Toyota Corolla Apex SE (VIN: [XXX], Mileage: 54,700). An authorized Toyota dealership has scanned the vehicle and confirmed active Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P268115 ("Engine Coolant Bypass Valve Circuit Open"). This mechanical and electrical failure triggers an immediate dashboard warning and creates an imminent risk of sudden engine overheating, thermal engine damage, and catastrophic loss of motive power (stalling) while traveling at highway speeds, placing myself and other motorists at risk.Toyota is fully aware of this widespread defect and issued Customer Support Program (CSP) 24TE04 to extend the warranty on older models (2019–2021) for 10 years or 100,000 miles due to high part failure rates. However, my February 2022 vehicle was factory-equipped with the exact same defective, un-superseded valve part number, yet Toyota has arbitrarily excluded my vehicle from free repair based solely on its calendar production date.Furthermore, Toyota's corporate office has denied goodwill coverage because I am a secondhand owner without previous maintenance records, despite this being a sealed electrical actuator failure completely unrelated to routine maintenance. I am a [XXX] senior citizen living on a fixed Supplemental Security Income (SSI) budget. Toyota's denial forces an elderly, low-income consumer to either navigate a hazardous, stalling-prone vehicle on public roads or lose essential transportation because an arbitrary corporate policy places a $1,045 manufacturing defect repair entirely out of financial reach. I urge the NHTSA to audit Toyota's exclusion parameters for CSP 24TE04. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I was traveling on the interstate through Missouri through to Kansas to get back to California on July 5, 2022 in my brand new just got april 18 2022 toyota corolla hybrid when the entire electrical panel went out on my car. i was driving the speed limit on the interstate with the AC on in 109 degree temps when the whole electric panel went out it was out for about ten minutes before it came back on and when it did i had no AC. i was literally in the middle of the desert, there were no stops coming up, no towns, no shade, nothing! and thank god i had just dropped my nine year old son off in indiana or he could've died with me. the AC condenser on this car is located RIGHT BEHIND the front grill of the car, which has over one inch openings in it and toyota is specifically not covering this part under warranty because they know this is a faulty design. i understand and have been told that AC is a luxury but its not for that one week old baby that is going to be traveling with their family is this car and they have no idea that a PEBBLE (is what toyota told me knocked my ac out in the desert!) is going to knock their AC out and that baby will die. Toyota needs to recall this car or put a screen behind the grill i dont care but the public needs to be made aware how easy it is for the AC to be knocked out. additionally the toyota dealership here said that they can repair it for 1400$ but there's nothing to stop it from happening again as soon as i drive off the lot because there is nothing protecting the condenser. i have a brand new car that is broke and cant be repaired and toyota has told me they stand by their design and IF THEY decide to do a recall i will be notified. please notify the public about this! it is hot everywhere and children will die. i cant even go back to pick my son up and now have to fly him out because i dont have AC in my brand new car. like seriously! think of the children and the people who have no idea how easy it is to go out! thank you!

They said my battery was not carrying the load, and replaced it. This is a very serious safety issue! What if it was a Sunday and Toyota closed?? Most repair shops are closed on Sundays! The moonroof exploded while driving alone on a 4 lane highway. No other vehicles were near me and I saw no evidence of being struck by a foreign body. If I had the interior cover open I could have been cut by the broken glass and the possibility of glass flying from my car could have endangered other vehicles or pedestrians. I did not have the interior cover open so was not injured and no other vehicles or pedestrians were effected, thank God! The dealer set me up an appointment 4 days from now but I am going to contact the service manager first thing tomorrow morning. There was no warning either electronically or physically. I consider the vehicle unsafe to drive.

I couldn’t press it in, and since there were pedestrians nearby, I had to slow the car down by shifting gears without using the clutch and pedestrians got anxious and mad around me because they had to speed up to the safe side, pulled to the side and checked the pedal, thinking maybe something was in the way, but when I pumped it a few times, it started working again. for a moment. Then at another red light, the clutch pedal went soft and wouldn’t engage again. I couldn’t move the car. Eventually, it turned off, and I managed to get it into first gear and restart it, but the car jumped forward as soon as it started. I kept pressing gas and going, but I couldn’t shift into second gear anymore. Traffic was building up and I barely made it to a safe spot near a crosswalk. It felt unsafe to drive. And had to be tow then I did some bleedings and changed fluids no response. After finally being seing by toyota and researching; all Toyota Corolla from 2020 and up have this problem the so called Clutch Master Cylinder it breaks so premature my car barely has 41k miles on it. Unacceptable and warranty wont cover it
