  • 12/30/2025· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE

During a trip out of town, I saw a warning light that informed me that the engine coolant level was low and that scalding could occur. The next morning, my husband checked the coolant levels and added coolant to the reservoir. Later that day, I received the same warning message. The vehicle was leaking coolant and could not sustain the appropriate levels. We brought the vehicle to the local BMW dealership and was told that the coolant pump had broken from the inside and would need to be replaced.

  • 12/24/2025· WHEELS

I was driving the car on the middle lane on Northern State Parkway (Long Island, NY) West bound about 55mph. Near exit 26 suddenly my car was automatically moving towards to the right, steering wheel and brake were not working, car was completely out of control, it crossed the right lane and went out of the highway and suddenly stuck in the bushes and stopped. Luckily, there was no car on the right lane at that time. I did not hit anyone and no car hit me. Call automatically went to the police from my car. In short time police came and I came out of the car and found that left rear wheel broke from axel. I do regular service in BMW service center. This year I took to Rallye BMW service center one time in April and one time in August and I did complete servicing as their recommendation. My car is in Rallye BMW for over one and half month but I did not get any information from BMW what happened to my car. I called several times but from service center Mr. Anthony is telling that from BMW corporate one came yet to do inspection.

  • 12/22/2023· AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCECrash

I was pulling into a parking spot. I was riding slowly into the correct position. Immediately the car went into full acceleration. Knocked the parked car in front about 8 feet, turned and knocked another car on the side. I stood on the breaks, it went another 10 feet and engine stopped. I never heard this level of acceleration of engine ever before. The airbags for me and my passenger did not open. I think this spurious acceleration is a control system defect.

  • 12/20/2021· FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE

New 2022 BMW X5M with a little over 200 miles on it. Received a message stating, "driver assistance support reduced". This driver assistance package controls many of the safety features listed above, and then some (could only select 3 from the list above, but affects more). Sad part is, after minor research, I find this has been an ongoing problem with BMW for years, and has not been addressed as the problem still occurs in their cars.

  • 12/17/2024· POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE

On Dec 9, 2024 I was driving my 2022 BMW X5 45E on (in EV mode) local roads at approximately 30-35mph when all of a sudden I lost power and the steering wheel became tight. My instrument panels all showed a multitude of errors including: "Chassis stabilization", "Power Supply", "Reduced Power", "Transmssion Malfuction", and others I do not recall. I was fortunately able to turn into a parking lot slowly, but the steering was tight to the point I had to use 2 hands to make turn. There was also no throttle response. As soon as the car came to a stop, I powered it off and turned it on. The car's screens were blinking and the car would not turn on. I contacted BMW Roadside and the car was towed to the dealership at East Bay BMW in Pleasanton. As of today I am still waiting for a reply on the condition of the vehicle. Yesterday I was told that they will change out the battery first and see if this solves the problem. My biggest concern is that had this happened to me on the highway that I or someone would have gotten seriously injured or may result in death from an accident. I lost power to the car and the steering became stiff.

  • 12/11/2025· ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The contact owns a 2022 BMW X5. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer for routine service. The contact stated that during the inspection of the vehicle, the dealer discovered that the water pump was beginning to leak coolant onto electrical circuits, inside the engine compartment. The dealer recommended the water pump replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V608000 (Engine and Engine Cooling, Electrical System), however, the vehicle model year was not part of the original VIN selection. The failure mileage was approximately 21,000.

  • 12/05/2024· ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

The contact was informed that the coolant pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. In addition, the contact was informed that the repair was not covered under recall. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. • 11/27/2022· STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES

I put my car in reverse this evening and the screen kept clicking and unclick the back up assistance button. The steering wheel was moving on its own. I was not controlling it. The brakes were hard and I could not press down more than 1/5-1/4 of the way. The car was not in my control. After an hour on the phone with support and reporting the issues they advised they would tow it. I was able to put the car in reverse push a button off that was selecting without being pressed manually near the driving shifter to get the car to drive normally. At home the same issues continued when I tried to put it in reverse. Even when shifting to drive these problems persisted until I pressed actual tangible buttons in the car to try and move it out of that mode. I am not able to back the car up properly. I have had this issue before on a smaller way where in different scenarios I am unable to press the brakes. The brakes are hard like trying to press on a brick wall. This has happened when driving, when turning the car on and when backing up but usually it would shift back to normal within a few seconds. Today was different with the screen blipping selecting and deselecting the item. I have videos of the incident on my phone.

  • 11/03/2025· POWER TRAIN

Like numerous other BMW owners, my transfer case is failing in my vehicle. It’s actively causing jerking/shuddering/locking up at low speeds and while making turns. This poses a significant danger to the driver and passengers in the vehicle, and other drivers as well while turning or trying to merge with traffic. I’ve brought the car into the dealer had the transfer case fluid changed according to the service bulletin that exists for this problem but it persists. I’ve brought the vehicle back into the dealer and told that now BMW suggests paying for another fluid change. This is obviously a known problem (thus the service bulletin), it’s persisted with models like mine for over 5 years, had cost numerous owners significant amounts of monies out of pocket, and poses a safety risk given the transfer case is a foundational component of these vehicles’ drive trains. Finally it’s a problem BMW openly admits they caused with improper fluid in the component. I believe the above meets all criteria for a formal recall that BMW should cover (or reimburse) the costs for given their negligence and the risks it poses. Can you confirm why this hasn’t risen to a formal recall? And confirm the steps you’re actively taking to elevate this to that status with BMW?

  • 11/01/2025· LANE DEPARTURE

My lane keep assist shuts off every time I drive the vehicle. I reported this in February and was told it was just due to the weather (snow). I brought the vehicle back in a few weeks later to the same dealership and was told there’s something in the steering wheel that needs replaced and they needed to order it. They never called me back to tell me the part was in and did not reply to my inquiries. I took the car to a different dealership in August and again asked them to fix the lane assist. They again told me there was something called an agitator in the steering wheel and would need to see if they had any in stock or would order. After almost 3 weeks of being in the shop when I picked it up the assist shut off again 5 minutes down the road. I reported to BMW North America and did nothing about it. The GM from the original dealership emailed me to ask if I was satisfied with their service and reported the issues, no response. Nobody seems to be willing or able to fix this safety feature I have paid extra money to have.

  • 10/24/2025· SEAT BELTS

When fully extended, the seatbelt will occasionally twist or fold as it is being retracted, sometimes causing the belt to be stuck or jammed in the retractor and rendering the seatbelt inoperable and in need of repair. BMW considers this an issue caused by "outside influence" (not a manufacturer defect) that is not covered under warranty repair, even if this issue occurs during normal operation of the seatbelt.

  • 10/09/2022· TIRESCrash

The Pirelli P-Zero tires that came factory equipped on my 2022 BMW X5 have experienced 3 separate sidewall failures in less than the first 20,000 miles on the vehicle. The tire sizes are staggered, 275/40r21front and 315/35r21 rear. The first instance occurred on 07/26/2022, traveling down the interstate, when both passenger side run flat tires blew out the sidewalls at approximately 15,000 miles. The sidewalls blew out to a point that the “run flat” functionality of the tire was compromised, requiring BMW to tow the vehicle to the nearest BMW dealership. At the time of the failure, a alert immediately appeared on the vehicles screen informing of the loss of tire pressure. The next incident occurred on 10/08/2022, at 19,900 miles, I was in my garage, showing my vehicle to a friend from out of town, when I noticed a large slit in the sidewall and a bulging section around the slit on my front driver’s side tire. The tire is currently still pressurized, but is not safe to continue operating.

  • 10/02/2023· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE

We have started noticing a burning smell whenever the vehicle is plugged into a charging station. At first we thought it was due to the charger, but the issue continued after we replaced the charging unit. Further, we also tried charging the unit at another station and experienced the same issue. This can be a potential fire risk and we'd like to get the matter resolved at the earliest. We have not seen this same issue with the 2023 version of the X5 hybrid.

I was driving on a road, the road was clear. No bridges, no underpasses & my sunroof exploded Startling me. I looked around thinking my car was shot at, noticing all my windows were fine. I heard glass falling and noticed it was my sunroof.

  • 09/02/2026· POWER TRAIN

Front differentials failed at 31k miles. Potential for the car to lock up or break down in highway. Problem was confirmed by independent shop.

  • 08/30/2024· SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE

The car accelerated itself when stopping at a red light. The brake was not working and accept the car forward instead.

  • 08/27/2024· ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

The contact owns a 2022 BMW X5. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the low coolant warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a failed water pump. The contact was informed that the water pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not assist. The failure mileage was approximately 70,381.

  • 08/27/2024· UNKNOWN OR OTHERCrash

I was turning right into a parking space when the vehicle suddenly accelerated and did not stop when I removed my foot from the accelerator and tried to brake. The car continued to accelerate through a low cinder block wall and did not stop until it dropped 3-4 feet off the side of the parking lot into the sidewalk/street. Fortunately I was not hurt and there were no pedestrians or vehicles in the roadway, but my car was deemed a total loss. The collision warning didn’t come in, and airbags did not deploy. I reported the incident to BMW NAmerica, who sent an inspection team to the collision center. After 7 weeks I was told that the vehicle data recorder captured ‘an incident” but did not record any information to verify that I attempted to brake, or to otherwise provide details of the incident. I was told the inspection found no mechanical issues and the all weather floor mat (installed by the BMW dealer) was installed incorrectly and must have gotten stuck on the accelerator. Furthermore, I was told that although the mat was a BMW product, it was installed by the dealer so the manufacturer was not responsible. BMW offered me a small goodwill settlement provided I sign a non disclosure agreement, which I declined to do. I’m reporting this to ensure you have a record should you receive similar reports from others. I received no written communication from BMW detailing the safety investigation.

Description of the Complaint: I own a 2022 BMW X5 (VIN: [XXX], current mileage: approximately 39,500 miles as of 08/24/2026) equipped with the B58TU engine, which uses a plastic oil pump (part number 11418646454) rather than a metal one. I have not yet experienced an actual failure, but I am reporting this as a precautionary safety concern based on the following: 1. On BMW's official parts reference site (RealOEM.com), the oil pump for my specific vehicle is flagged with an "Attention! Observe PuMA measure 65494813" notice, indicating BMW's own internal system has identified a known issue requiring special observation for this part. 2. I have learned that BMW Korea has acknowledged this plastic oil pump issue following a government investigation, and has committed to a full free repair program for affected vehicles in Korea. 3. I am aware of multiple reports and complaints from other B58TU engine owners in the United States regarding this same plastic oil pump issue. 4. Given that the oil pump is a critical component for engine lubrication, a failure of this part while driving — particularly during highway or long-distance travel — could pose a serious safety risk, including sudden loss of engine oil pressure and potential engine seizure at speed. I am filing this report to bring this issue to NHTSA's attention before an actual failure occurs, and to request that this be considered as part of any pattern analysis regarding B58TU engine oil pump defects in the United States. - **Year:** 2022 - **Make:** BMW - **Model:** X5 - **VIN:** [XXX] - **Mileage:** 39,500 - **Component:** Engine and Engine Cooling (or "Engine Oil System" if listed separately) - **Attachments:** RealOEM.com INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My 2022 BMW X5 is having the transfer case star to fail. Where the symptoms currently are at is the car has a shudder in certain situations. I can feel it when maneuvering at slow speeds and I can feel it at times at speed or when on a steep hill. I bought the extended warranty for the car and the maintenance package for the vehicle. I'm at 68k miles and the shudder started before that but I am still covered under extended warranty. I have had all maintenance done on the vehicle at the local BMW dealership including all tire needs and have always replaced tires as necessary and number of tires at a time they suggest. When I took it in as the vehicle is reporting needing brakes 2 weeks ago, I mentioned the shudder and asked about tire tread on the 2 front tires. They came back with that the tires were fine in spec with the back 2 but that shudder is the transfer case. The dealer also then mentioned a couple things: - They now recommend changing the fluid in the transfer case by 60k miles due to amount of failures they are seeing (my X5 was in the dealership multiple times before an after 60k and it was never recommended). - that since it is not in the recommended maintenance for the xdrive4.0i that the car would not alert to have it changed and therefore BMW would not cover changing the fluid under the UltimateCare (service maintenance plan they sold me). That the transfer case was meant to be a for life fluid. - I asked what happens next if the fluid is not changed, that it will continue to degrade and once it fully gives out the vehicle will become inoperable - I asked does the fluid change save the transfercase and they said it seems to help many vehicles and the shudder disappears but for some it does not. - I then asked would the BMW Extended Warranty purchased cover it if it fully failed or the fluid change did not solve the shudder and I was told maybe fully, partially or not at all. 2022 BMW X5 Adaptive Cruise Control (a very expensive option) will not reliably stop or accelerate your BMW. It is dangerous and unsafe and should be eliminated until it will brake safely. I have a video that I was unable to upload. This system if left to stop your vehicle will crash a occupants into a stopped vehicle. Always brakes to late. Scares all occupants. Not safe to use in traffic, not safe on the highway, it’s not safe, period. How is BMW permitted to sell an advanced cruise control system, that is to safely stop and accelerate a bmw if it doesn’t? If it can’t stop a vehicle autonomously with a driver actively engaged, what distinguishes this from standard cruise control that requires a driver to be fully engaged. In 2022, and since 2000, this is not advanced cutting edge technology. DONT BY A BMW, THEY DONT CARE IF THEY ARE SELLING A DANGEROUS SYSTEM. I WOULD NOT USE THIS SYSTEM IF IT WAS FREE. Brakes have to work 100% of the time. Anything less when it comes to braking your vehicle is VERY DANGEROUS.

The high-voltage battery system (this is a plug-in hybrid) began intermittently displaying a "battery not properly charging" warning approximately 6 months ago; the issue would resolve after plugging in and charging. On July 14, 2026, while driving, the vehicle displayed a "critical battery failure - pull over immediately and drive slowly" warning. The driver pulled over and shut off the vehicle; the warning cleared and the car appeared to drive normally afterward. This warning recurred several times over the following weeks under the same pattern. On August 6, 2026, the same critical battery failure warning appeared while driving; this time steering feel and drivetrain response were abnormal, and the air conditioning and several electronic features stopped working. Our safety, and the safety of other drivers on the road, was put at risk by the sudden loss of full vehicle control while in motion. The vehicle has been at an authorized BMW dealership for inspection since August 7, 2026; a full diagnosis is pending. Dealer service staff independently remarked that two other BMW X-series plug-in hybrids came in that same morning with the identical warning and symptoms, suggesting this may be a widespread component defect rather than an isolated issue.

Over the last approximately 20,000 miles or so I've noticed a studder/shaking of the vehicle when turning and/or accelerating at slow speeds, in particular, while the car is cold (not warmed up). I change the transfer case fluid about 5,000 miles ago and the problem did not resolve. I now see that there is a class action lawsuit against BMW for known failure of the transfer case. I would like my problem noted for the record and hopefully action by BMW.

I own a 2022 BMW X5 xDrive45e that has developed a drivetrain shudder during slow-speed, tight turns while lightly accelerating, such as when maneuvering in parking lots or making U-turns. The vibration is consistently reproducible under these conditions and is felt through the vehicle during the turn. The vehicle otherwise drives normally at higher speeds. After researching the issue, I found that many other owners have reported substantially similar symptoms involving the transfer case on BMW xDrive vehicles. My independent BMW repair shop has recommended a transfer case fluid service as the first corrective action based on the known nature of this problem. I am having that service performed and will retain all repair documentation. I am submitting this complaint because this appears to be a recurring issue affecting multiple vehicles. If the condition worsens, it could lead to drivetrain binding during low-speed maneuvers and may affect safe vehicle operation. I request that NHTSA investigate whether this is a broader defect requiring manufacturer action. I will update this complaint if the repair does not resolve the condition or if additional diagnosis identifies an internal transfer case failure.

There was a semi-truck in the middle lane (on my left). Assisted Driving/Adaptive Cruise Control (Cruise Mode 2) was active. The car automatically accelerated from the light. When I entered the intersection, the car sounded a warning alarm and braked very hard momentarily, but did not stop the car. I was quite startled and did not notice an alert in the dash. Braking was so hard and so sudden I felt lucky that I was not rear ended by the car behind me. There was nothing in my path. Just beyond the intersection there is a rail road overpass. The road curves slightly to the right just beyond the intersection and is slightly downhill to go under the overpass. There was a freight train on the overpass, all tanker cars I believe. My speculation is the car's sensors "saw" the freight train as a potential collision, perhaps cross traffic. and the car's safety systems were applied.

I was not sure how to retrieve the Video, so I had to call BMW Genius and the Employee had to walk me thru the steps to retrieve the Video. The Camera system was set up for Automatic Recording, as well as Manual Recording, but no Video of the accident was ever recorded. The only Video that was Recorded and saved, was from January 13, 2024, when I was showing my Wife, how to manually record something. According to the person who hit me, he said "I could not stop, because I had a bad Wheel" and that person also included that Statement in the Accident Report. Since the Accident, I sustained lower left Back pain, left Hip pain and upper left Leg pain in the Muscles. According to my X-Ray Images of my left Hip, the Head of the Femur Bone is flattened, due to the impact sustained following the collision. According to my Doctor, I have Bone Spurs, which causes me pain when standing, walking, sitting and Complete Hip Replacement is now required, to eliminate my pain. My Lawyer suggested that I file a complaint with the NHTSA, because the Camera system should have recorded the collision and that would have given us a clear view and understanding, on what the other Driver was doing before the collision. BMW is at fault for the Camera system, which did not record the accident, when it was set up for Automatic and Manual.

I took my 2022 BMW X5 xDrive 45e for concerns of shuddering at low speeds and tight turns under warranty. No warning messages on dashboard. I asked specifically what was causing the shuddering. BMW of Raleigh would not respond. But they found that the Transfer Case was affected so they flushed the oil and put an oil mixture replacement in. According to the most recent BMW service bulletin, the technician is only to put in DTF oil. The technician not only put in DTF oil but also an over-the-counter non-approved chemical additive. Reading the service bulletin, the Transfer Case is supposed to have a lifetime warranty. We were charged over $500 for this "oil change", but it was under warranty. Transfer Case failures can result in accidents on highways and other roadways and complete mechanical failure of vehicle.. The electric A/C compressor on my 2022 BMW X5 xDrive45e (VIN [XXX] ) failed internally at approximately 59,000 miles, causing metal debris to circulate throughout the refrigerant system. The failed compressor and contaminated components are at BMW of Sterling (Sterling, VA) and available for inspection. This is a safety concern because the A/C refrigerant circuit provides thermal management for the high-voltage hybrid battery. BMW of Sterling's service advisor confirmed in writing that the A/C system is "a critical component of your vehicle's HV system," that there is no independent backup cooling system, and that the failure "can cause potential high voltage battery failures." Without active cooling, the HV battery is at risk of overheating, which could result in a thermal event. The failure was diagnosed and confirmed by BMW of Sterling. They categorized the repair as "EHV: FULLY ELECTRIC OR HYBRID VEHICLE DRIVETRAIN DIAGNOSTICS" with the complaint "HIGH VOLTAGE SYSTEM ERROR." The repair estimate is $11,356.59 and requires replacement of the compressor, condenser, all expansion valves, and a double system flush. BMW Service Information Bulletin SI B64 09 21 documents this exact failure pattern for the G05 X5 xDrive45e, and BMW created a dedicated repair kit (part 64 50 5 A5B 590) for it. This is my second major HV component failure. A battery cell replacement was performed under warranty in 2025. Both failures were confirmed by the dealership to be component defects unrelated to owner use. Prior to complete failure, a fan noise was present in the front driver's area for a period of time before it stopped, consistent with the compressor degrading before failing entirely. A high voltage system error was displayed. BMW NA (case #XXX) has declined warranty coverage despite the vehicle being within the 8-year/80,000-mile HV battery warranty. I was trying to park my car on March 11, 2023 at noon, and I noticed a sudden uncontrolled acceleration even when my foot was off the accelerator pedal. Parking collision front sensors failed to provide an early warning, and automatic emergency brake did not engage leading to a minor collision with the vehicle parked in front. The situation occurred so rapidly that I did not have enough time to react quickly and apply brakes. I managed to apply brakes to avoid a serious incident, but it was not quick enough to even avoid this minor collision. I have reported this to BMW USA, however the car has not been inspected by a dealer or an independent service center after the incident. There were no warnings displayed prior to this incident, however I have had consistent issues pertaining to the operation of front sensors. I had BMW certified dealer inspect front sensors, and according to them the sensors do not provide an early warning as per the design but they have adjusted the sensitivity. The adjustment did not improve the situation, and I provided that feedback to the service center as well. The sensors did fail at twice prior to this incident, and the dealer inspected that as part of sensor sensitivity adjustment. I drove this vehicle to the BMW certified dealer more than twice to have the front sensors and other things inspected prior to this incident. Nevertheless, this uncontrolled acceleration is something that I have never experienced before, and I am traumatized to even drive this vehicle comfortably.
