Subaru of America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2021 Crosstrek, 2022 Forester, 2021-2023 Legacy, and Outback vehicles. An insufficient weld may allow water to enter the inhibitor switch, causing it to fail.

Risk: An inoperative inhibitor switch may prevent the reverse lights from illuminating and the rearview camera image from displaying, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the inhibitor switch, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 8, 2024. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's number for this recall is WRQ-23.

When I bought the car last year I had it for less than 2 months before my windshield cracked from a rock while we were on the highway. I get this happens so I didn’t think anything of it until I saw how many other people have also had their windshield crack shortly after buying the car. Since I’ve gotten it replaced almost a year ago I haven’t had any issues.

  • 12/08/2020· SUSPENSION

ON 11/30/2020 I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW SUBARU CROSSTREK FROM SHEEHY SUBARU IN SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA. IT HAD 15 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. ON 12/01/2020 IT WAS DELIVERED TO ME AT MY RESIDENCE IN WASHINGTON, DC. I IMMEDIATELY NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A LOUD CREAKING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE CAR WHENEVER I TOOK A TURN OR WENT OVER A SMALL BUMP IN THE ROAD, INCLUDING SPEED BUMPS. WITHIN 30 MINUTES OF TAKING POSSESSION OF THE VEHICLE, I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP TO NOTIFY THEM THAT I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE NOISE. THEY DISMISSED THE NOISE AS A REGULAR PART OF THE "NEW VEHICLE BREAK-IN PROCESS" AND CLAIMED THAT IT WOULD GO AWAY QUICKLY. AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR APPROXIMATELY 10 MORE MILES TO SEE IF THE NOISE DISAPPEARED, I BECAME CONCERNED ABOUT MY SAFETY BECAUSE THE NOISE ONLY APPEARED TO BE INCREASING, SO I STOPPED USING THE VEHICLE. ON 12/05/20, THE FIRST DAY POSSIBLE, I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT QUICKLY CONFIRMED THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH THE SUSPENSION OF THE CAR, BUT THEY WERE NOT SURE EXACTLY WHAT. THEY INDICATED IT WAS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. THEY SAID THAT THEY WOULD LOOK INTO IT. IT IS NOW 12/08/20 AND THE CAR IS STILL NOT REPAIRED. SO, IN SHORT, A NEW CAR WITH 15 MILES ON THE ODOMETER WHEN I PURCHASED IT HAS NOW SPENT AN EQUAL AMOUNT OF TIME IN MY POSSESSION AS IT HAS SPENT IN THE SHOP FOR REPAIRS TO THE SUSPENSION. I WORRY THAT THIS ISSUE IS NOT LIMITED TO MY VEHICLE ALONE AS IT IS AN ADMITTED MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT APPARENTLY CANNOT BE REPAIRED QUICKLY.

Problem 1)Had my '21 Sport for 7 days. Started stalling few times when shifting from P to R while on a slight incline (dash lights up like in Acc mode) after driving it for about 30 min before and then turning it off to go inside of the store, etc. after about 2-5 minutes of idling, the car engine stopped like I was in auto stop, but didn’t kick back on when I shift gears to reverse or when I applied gas. But then I hit the on/off button and engine turns over just fine. Problem 2) But today it started making a whirring sound with difficulty accelerating & quick decelerating/speed drop off upon release of gas, even when going down a big hill. It felt like resistance and pulling feeling almost? Like how a car feels when It doesn’t want to shift. Also felt a little jittery the longer I drove & loud clunk shifting gears. Got louder when I would press on the gas more. It continued even after starting the car again when leaving my location. It wasn’t doing it before yesterday, and then while positioning the car for the tow truck. But the back up cam started going crazy at me like I was about to hit something??? But nothing was there. Then eyesight was “disabled, check manual” a couple times today upon starting it. But no codes thrown thrown outside of the eyesight thing. I’ve seen a transmission issues and stalling and ECU issues with the 2018 & 2019 but quite a few people on Facebook and Reddit similar issues in '21. Dealer found no codes and couldn't recreate it so they told me to come get it.

  • 11/20/2024· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The USB A outlets under the head unit that allow connection to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay Yes it is available for inspection upon request How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The connection when hooked up to a phone is intermittent. This results in driver distraction whenever it disconnects due to trying to get it to reconnect. Especially when using gps apps this means the driver may be "lost" until it can be reconnected, which means they will try to get it reconnected while driving which is dangerous. Sometimes it goes in and out every 60-90 seconds. Sometimes it won't connect at all until the vehicle is power cycled or the head unit is reset but neither of these guarantees a stable connection. The issue is not fixed by replacing the USB cable or the phone with a brand new phone. The cables and phone do not have this issue with any other USB port that they have been used on (in other vehicles). Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Not on my vehicle but there are hundreds of reports online for years with multiple Subaru models where it has been. I could get it reproduced easily, just haven't had the time. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No This happens every day, at any speed, and has been happening since I got the vehicle at 20000 miles and there are 35000 miles on it now (approximately).

My 2021 Crosstrek eyesight/braking system failed. I saw the truck stop but the system failed and I went into the back of a large truck. There is a witness who is happy to talk with you. He saw the truck's sudden stop and my crosstrek failure to stop. My car is totaled. I have the police report and have reported this to my insurance company.

  • 11/06/2022· SERVICE BRAKESCrash

In the winter of 2021-22, while parallel parking, backing up, then pressing the brake, my Crosstrek spontaneously accelerated in reverse and rammed into the truck already parked behind me. The Crosstrek paused, then rammed again, as I pressed harder on the brake. I put the car into “park” and turned off the engine. I was baffled and had no explanation for what happened. Thank goodness a person wasn’t between my Crosstrek and the truck. More recently, on October 4, 2022, I was at the post office mailbox drop-off. My Crosstrek was stopped with my foot on the brake. Some mail had fallen out of the overstuffed mailbox, I opened my door, set my foot outside, leaned over to pick up the mail, and my Crosstrek spontaneously accelerated forward. My car door hit the cement pylon and closed on my leg. The car lurched forward again, then stopped, and I was able to open the door. My leg was broken with a compound fracture and my foot was nearly ripped off. I called for help, 911 was dispatched, and I was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.

Took to local dealership on 8/16/25 and they claimed per TSB from Subaru for cracks that although it had cracks, it was not necessary to be replaced due to it not being cracked enough. Brought back to my mechanic on 9/26/25 and cracking is worse, odometer is at 56,763 miles now. This part is supposed to last around 100,000 miles. Premature cracking puts me at risk of losing control of my car should the parts fail.

The contact owns a 2021 Subaru Crosstrek. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel was difficult to turn in either direction. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under an unidentified recall; however, the recall repair failed to prevent a failure. The contact stated that upon further inspection, the vehicle occasionally experienced an abnormal battery energy consumption, although the battery was previously recharged. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

Windshield is very fragile. (I think it cracks when a flower petal falls on it...) But seriously, I have about 20 chips in my windshield and have not had any significant boulders or trucks with rocks that have hit my windshield. It appears to be from every day urban commute, which is unusual. I have never had a car that I have had to replace the windshield in due to fragility. Also, the windshield seal has come completely off at the base near the hood.

  • 10/01/2021· POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER

I have been experiencing shuddering/jerking/hesitation in my vehicle since July. The dealership has had it in their service department several times and cannot diagnose the issue. Subaru of America was contacted and gave no resolution to repairing the vehicle. They did not inspect the vehicle, rather gathered the "data" from the dealership. The shuddering/jerking/hesitation happens from a start to stop position and is incredibly dangerous when pulling out into traffic or crossing over lanes in a left hand turn. This malfunction can cause a collision and is a huge safety concern of mine. I do not feel comfortable putting my life at risk driving this vehicle. The dealership has only tested the CVT transmission and ran "data" and cannot seem to tell me what is wrong with the vehicle, though there is clearly an issue, whether it is the CVT transmission or another component of the vehicle. I see several similar complaints on the NHTSA website for the Crosstrek dating back to 2015. I am confused as to why the manufacturer is not being held responsible for a defect that is so dangerous. Is it going to take someone getting seriously injured or a death before this is investigated? I encourage other Crosstrek owners to come forward and report similar issues you are having to NHTSA.

  • 09/11/2023· VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

There are occasional times (perhaps once or twice a month) where the vehicle does not respond with the expected acceleration of a depression of the accelerator pedal. Specifically, the vehicle "lags" when I depress the accelerator pedal. While I have not experienced a dire situation or collision because of it, I believe it might cause other drivers to experience a safety incident: a driver might want to perform a fast maneuver with elevated risk but not receive the expected acceleration. For example, I was once making a U-Turn with traffic oncoming about 2,000 feet away. I needed to make the maneuver swiftly but my vehicle lagged. I would like to report this issue in case other owners of the Subaru Crosstrek Plug-In Hybrid are also experiencing.

As a result of this, a chip windshield glass developed that began to grow rapidly. I immediately had to park the vehicle and call Safelite to do the chip repair. Never in my 51 years of driving have I ever seen anything like this!!!! Subaru has a DEFLECTIVE WINDSHIELD being used on their 2021 Crosstrek and possibly other models!!! Immediate ACTION is needed for the PUBLIC SAFETY of this defect. This should not be allowed to be sold with this manufacture deflect.

Pulled off to exit highway approximately 1 minute after check engine light came on. At bottom of exit, car completely lost power. Attempted to put vehicle into park and wouldn't shift. Started to see smoke coming from engine and then shortly after started to see flames coming from engine. Immediately exited vehicle and called 911. No one was injured. Subaru indicated fire started as result of external influences. Insurance company's 3rd party auditors were not able to determine cause of fire.

  • 08/31/2021· ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

I was crossing two lanes of a very busy ocean front street when the engine “bogged down” . I let off on the gas pedal and then depressed it again, which then caused the engine to go off. I the quickly restarted the engine and was able to get out of the way of oncoming traffic. This was the only time the engine failed, but on about three or four previous times, the engine “bogged down” when I depressed the gas pedal, but recovered after I quickly depressed the pedal again.

  • 08/27/2023· ENGINE

The issue is the Engine Coolant Bypass Valve. This causes the Engine to not take in as much coolant resulting in the engine getting much hotter than it should, thus putting those in the car’s safety at risk. This could ultimately lead to a fire and/or cause the car to suddenly lose power. My car already refuses to go above 3000 rpm’s and is very laggy when driving. The car itself shows a code that the bypass valve needs replaced & the check engine has come on. However, Subaru has failed to acknowledge that this is an issue amongst most of their vehicles since 2020. This issue also disables the Subaru Eyesight which is in control of adaptive cruise control, pre collision breaking, and sway warning. With those features now disabled, the car has lost the Safety Package that Subaru boasts. I have read on many online forums that this has been an ongoing issue now for many customers, a bulk of which experienced total engine failure. This lack of responsibly is putting many lives at risk on the road every day. I hope this helps shed light to this issue to Subaru & that this part is recalled so that Subaru must pay for the repairs instead of the car owners. Also, the repair part is around $500 & maintenance must be done by Subaru which is another $400-500 for labor. My opinion is they are using this defect as a way to make easy money on many customers since 2021. Here’s a link to the Service Bulletin that has been created about this issue: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2022/MC-10208664-0001.pdf?fbclid=IwAR355WNLzftp3Qhmj7GnfmPFL9VODbDEbiT9X5Admr7n90YI4rTa4J5HSIk_aem_Aex4JIYKdhZ3n6Xh90f9w4zKu4TxFSO6LxpMIwO79FtzP1E3Y5TygVIAq_Ih4KxM6nc

The contact owns a 2021 Subaru Crosstrek. The contact stated that the battery was drained quickly, causing the battery to need frequent recharging. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the replacement was not covered under warranty. The failure mileage was 1,300.

  • 08/24/2026· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

There have been multiple instances where my car has failed to “restart” if the auto-start-stop feature is on. I immediately turn that setting off every time I get into my car because if I pause for too long at a light/stop sign etc.the engine will stall and turn off (without being in park). I have reported this to Subaru on many occasions and they’ve told me to replace the battery, so I did, and nothing changed. I’ve also replaced the starter and that didn’t help either. I’m now unable to turn my car off at gas stations because I’m worried it won’t restart. I just saw that a law suit has opened because of this electrical issue so I wanted to formally report my concerns. This needs to be a safety recall.

  • 08/21/2026· SERVICE BRAKES

We brought the vehicle in for routine maintenance. They reported that all brake hoses were bulging and at risk of failing at any time. They said that there was a related recall for a similar issue on other CrossTrek's but that ours was not included in the VIN list, so was not a part of the recall. This appears to be a serious component failure which could result in a fatal accident. The fact that this happened with all brake hoses indicates a defective component. We were lucky that we found it and were able to have it addressed before the brakes failed.

  • 08/21/2024· VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

While driving in the left lane on a three lane highway (about 70mph) the car's automatic braking system engaged. The car would not accelerate creating a very dangerous situation on a congested highway at night. Luckily, we are able to navigate to a brake down lane without a collision. The check engine light, Eyesight light and RAB light turned on. The car would not function normally and was towed to a Subaru dealer (Patrick Subaru, Shrewsbury MA). Diagnosis was a failure of the Engine Coolant Bypass Valve P26A6. Other failure codes were: P0087, P2004, P2005, B2806, B2C22. I was told this is a known problem in Subarus of certain years, but, instead of recalling, the company has extended the warranty on the malfunctioning part. This incident happened without any previous warning and caused a life threatening situation for us and those around us.

While driving on the highway in the slow lane (furthest to the right), traveling at approximately 50 mph, I came to be behind a tractor trailer. Before I had a chance to pass the tractor trailer, it switched lanes abruptly. My vision past/beyond (in front of) the tractor trailer was heavily obstructed by the massive vehicle itself, so I could not see that in front of the 18-wheeler there was a mid-size sedan traveling at approximately 5-10 mph in the same active highway lane I was in. I had almost no time to react, and neither the Automatic Emergency Braking system nor the Forward Collision Warning system engaged. Both of these systems should have activated to prevent the collision and/or minimize injuries and damage. I subsequently collided (harshly) with the aforementioned sedan.

The crack was not there when I entered the garage because I had to use the garage remote on the mirror to open the garage door. I would have noticed it (crack). The crack appeared suddenly. I am reporting this problem because I read that another owner, of similar vehicle, has complained about the same issue and almost with same mileage on his car. Same year vehicle too. Given the windshield/Glass history Subaru has with the Outback model, I wonder if this problem is transferred to the Subaru Crosstrek. The two vehicles do share the same type of glass!!!

The bluetooth system is not functioning properly. When a call is in progress, the bluetooth will indicate that no phone is connected and prompt the driver to connect the phone. In the meantime, the call is still active and the person on the other end hears the radio playing but the driver cannot hear the other person. The call will then reconnect for a few seconds before repeating this process. It will continue until the call is ended. While this might be considered an inconvenience, I believe it is a genuine safety issue as this problem takes the drivers eyes off the road and has them answering prompts on a visual screen and is a general distraction. Subaru is aware of the problem and has refused to take action to correct it. The incident is ongoing. As a result the hands-free phone option is unavailable.
