- AIR BAGS:FRONTALCampaign 20V734000 · 25/11/2020
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Toyota Avalon and 2020 Avalon Hybrid, RAV4, and RAV4 Hybrid vehicles. Breakaway pins within the steering column, designed to absorb energy and reduce injury during a crash, could have been damaged during production, possibly affecting the performance of the driver's air bag in the event of a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Risk: In the event of a crash, an air bag that does not perform as designed can increase the risk of injury.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering column, free of charge. The recall began December 18, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 20TB17/20TA17.

Risk: If a suspension control arm breaks, it can result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace both front lower suspension arms, free of charge. This recall began August 10, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's interim numbers for this recall are 20TB08 / 20TA08.
- ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLINGCampaign 20V064000 · 06/02/2020
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2020 Toyota Avalon Hybrid, Camry, Camry Hybrid and Lexus ES300h and 2019-2020 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid vehicles equipped with 2.5L 4-Cylinder engines. Porosity in the engine castings may result in cracks than can allow coolant to leak internally and/or externally.
Risk: A coolant leak can cause the engine to overheat and cause a vehicle stall in conventional gasoline vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, for all involved vehicles, the engine may get damaged mechanically, possibly resulting in an engine oil leak, increasing the risk of a fire.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the engine including the engine block, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began April 3, 2020. Check engine light came on and noted a malfunction in the electronic control of the engine, throttle or transmission. When taken to the dealer they found code P012807 related to engine cooling and suggested a replacement of the thermostat. This part should have a life of 100k or 8-10 years and car currently has less than 60k miles and 4 years old. Asked the dealership about known recall 20TA04 - for engine cooling recall but they insisted my car was not impacted. This is a safety issue as it could result in overheating of the engine leading to fire hazards.

The Rear Hatch started to get stuck. It is automatic so you would normally press a button to open and close and it would slowly move up or down and close shut on its own. When the issue started, it would "pop open" but stay stuck to a point where I would need to manually lift it open. (hitting my head on it often) Right before I took it to the dealership service, it would not close properly. While it seemed close, the notification showed it open therefore, not allowing me to lock my car and the lights on the car would need to stay on while car was parked and off. Driving home, the "open door" notification was beeping non-stop. Once again I had to open and close manually until it was considered "closed" Brought the car into the Toyota Dealership to assess. They found that the power lift gate hinges on the door were coming off and it needs to go to an Auto Body for realignment. I performed research online and found this to be a very common issue with the Toyota RAV4's. I have had leased 2 RAV4's prior to this one and never had a problem (those were manual hatches) [XXX] [XXX] My car has 33k miles on it although this issue (not as severe) started a while ago. Wire harness failure according to the Toyota dealership representative I spoke with after inspection on 12/18/24. Rep said this is a known issue with certain years and they will cover cost of replacement. Previously, I had received a message stating, "Hybrid System Malfunction, Visit your Dealer" but could not get an appointment until 12/18. The dealer rep said they needed to order parts to fix the wire harness issue and that I would be okay taking the car and bringing it back when parts were in. The day after the inspection (12/19) I was in a Walmart parking lot and my car started but I could not get it to drive or reverse. A message stated "Vehicle not ready to drive" and "No power to rear brakes". If I put the car into drive or reverse and stepped on the gas, the car interior lit up and the dinging sound (usually associated with unbuckled safety belt) was heard. I had my safety belt fastened. My car could be put into neutral and had to be towed to the dealership. After looking into the issue, I found out that the car could had died while I was driving it resulting in loss of power brakes, etc. I live in a more rural area and could have been stuck with out cell reception, etc. This should be a RECALL and they never should have let me leave the dealership in my car. Note: As of today (12/20) the dealer rep stated they will cover all towing costs and cover a loaner vehicle for me. My dealership is very helpful BUT this could be a serious issue for someone else. Google "Rav 4 Cablegate" for more information.

I was told it's the heater control valve/coolant bypass valve and would cost around $900+ to repair. I did some research and see that this problem is occurring alot.

In the sring of this year, i lightly drove through a water filled pothole in a parking lot when all of the displays went dark for a split second and then came back on like the car had just started. I called my dealership right away and was told that maybe some water had gotten into some wiring and caused the glitch but to call again ASAP if it happened again. On Dec 9, 2021 under dry and even surfaces while making a left turn the vehicle went dark again while driving but this time took a touch longer to re-engage. I called the dealership again to report this to be looked at during a maintenance appointment. They found nothing wrong, but suggested it was a feature the car does not have was turned on and they turned it off. I was then shown the button responsible for this ... it was for automatic high beams, NOT some engine efficency button. On Sunday, 12 12 2021 i went to start the car to go to work and it was completely dead, just a small clicking sound to be heard within the cabin. i had to get the car jumped to get it started on the second turn of the key after i removed it from the first attempt. I drove it to the dealership that day and i am still waiting for results. This needs to be adressed ASAP because its a potentially dangerous if not deadly situation if it conks out at highway speeds in front of a semi.

when car is subject to rain or car washed, the headliner gets saturated at the "A" pillar and the "C" pillar. This water seems to be coming from under the roof rails. I have tested sunroof drain and they are open leaving the only other area to leak at the insertion of the roof rails. I have never had anything attached to them to add excess weight but have also hearing and finding many other reports of this happening. I received recall notice December 2023 for defect in front passenger seat airbag that could cause the airbag to fail to deploy in the event of a crash. Fortunately, I have not had any collisions but the danger and safety concerns remain, and there has been NO ACTION BY TOYOTA ON THIS SERIOUS RECALL NOTICE The Recall Notice stills says “no remedy” and it has not been updated in the past year. Coolant bypass valve failed vehicle warning lights came on for this 2020 Toyota Rav4 at 31,641 miles. This is absolutely available for inspection on request. Safety as this can potentially cause overheating, coolant leaking, a cracked cylinder. The manufacturer (Local Toyota dealership - "Ed Morse Delray Toyota" inspected and suggested replacement of the coolant bypass valve for this 2020 toyota rav4 for a price around 800$. the technician say they see a load of these newer model Rav4's needing new coolant bypass valves. I opted not to immediately replace the valve due to it being a vehicle model-wide issue that should likely be a recall. THE 14.5-GALLON GAS TANK IN MY 2020 TOYOTA RAV4 HYBRID HAS A DEFECT THAT PREVENTS THE TANK FROM BEING FILLED TO CAPACITY. THIS DEFECT NOT ONLY FAILS TO COMPLY WITH FEDERAL AND STATE GAS TANK REGULATIONS, WHICH PROHIBIT THE SALE OF VEHICLES THAT CANNOT FILL 90 PERCENT OR WITHIN TWO GALLONS OF THEIR NOMINAL GAS TANK CAPACITY, BUT SUFFER FROM A SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCED DRIVING RANGE. THE FUEL TANK DEFECT PREVENTS ME FROM GETTING ANYWHERE NEAR THE VEHICLES' ADVERTISED 550-PLUS-MILE RANGE (I AVERAGE 400-425 GALLONS A TANK), WHICH WAS A MAJOR SELLING POINT AND FOR WHICH I PAID A PREMIUM PRICE FOR; THIS HAPPENS AT EVERY INTERVAL I HAVE TO FILL UP ON GAS. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AS WELL, I MAY RUN OUT OF FUEL WHICH MAY RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT OR LEAVE ME STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF A BUSY OR DESERTED ROAD AND WITH A NY WINTER, IT IS JUST NOT SAFE TO BE STRANDED IN THE COUNTRYSIDE WHEN IT IS FREEZING COLD OUTSIDE. RUNNING OUT OF FUEL MAY ALSO DAMAGE MY VEHICLES FUEL SYSTEM TOO! THE OWNER'S MANUAL WARNS THAT IF MY VEHICLE RUNS OUT OF FUEL OR THE FUEL IS TOO LOW, THE HYBRID SYSTEM MAY NOT BE ABLE TO START.

2020 RAV4 hybrid. Vehicle doesn't start; requires a jump, which is inconvenient or unsafe, depending on where it happens. Intermittent occurrence, ~ 3 times/year. Toyota checked 12V battery, pronounced OK, of course the car was driven to the shop for the check, so was operating at the time. I've checked the battery when the car wouldn't start and found it to be a little low (11.5V) but by no means fully discharged. Not associated with leaving components on (we are careful to turn everything off) or weather; the vehicle is garaged in the winter. I turned off the "Bluetooth" system which we never used and haven't had this issue over the past year. Suspect that the "Bluetooth" system was operating even when the vehicle was off?

THE FUEL TANK IS RATED AT 14.6 GAL BUT THE MOST I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET OUT IS 11 GAL. THE ISSUE IS CONSISTENT ACROSS EVERY FUELING PERIODS AND AFTER TAKING IT TO THE SERVICE CENTER TWICE, THE ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN FIXED AND THE RESPONSE HAS BEEN THAT THE FUEL TANK HAS NO ISSUES. I HAVE SHOWN THE PROOFS TO THE SERVICE CENTER AND YET THEY DENY CLAIMS.

The door lock actuators required repair on all my doors for the RAV4 2020. They stopped working after the 3 year warranty was up. This is a safety issue. I had to manually lock and unlock my doors, which left in a dangerous position at night. Over the course of a year all 4 doors needed to have the actuators replaced. This happrened in 2024.

I PURCHASED MY BRAND NEW 2020 RAV4 HYBRID ON 7/1/2020 AND WAS TOLD THE CAR IS IN PERFECT CONDITION WITHOUT ANY ISSUE. STARTED WITH 2ND TANK OF GAS FILL UP, I NOTICE THE METER READING IS NOT CORRECT. WHEN I DROVE THE CAR AWAY ON 7/1/2020, THE READING SHOW SOMETHING LIKE "520 MILES TO EMPTY". WITH THE 2ND TANK FILL UP, THE READING CHANGED TO "480 MILES TO EMPTY". WHEN COMES TO THE 4TH TANK FILL UP, THE READ IS NOW SHOWING "410 MILES TO EMPTY". ALSO, BASED ON THE CAR SPECIFICATIONS, THE TANK SIZE IS 14.5 GAL, BUT I CAN ONLY FILL UP AROUND 10 GALLONS OF GAS, THE TANK WOULD BE FULL. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED IT TODAY. I WAS JUST TOLD THEY NEED TO REPLACE THE FUEL TANK ALONG WITH SOME OTHER PARTS ON THE ALMOST BRAND NEW CAR. THIS IS NOT RIGHT. TOYOTA SOLD THE CAR WITH MAJOR ISSUE TO ME AND WITHOUT DISCLOSE THE INFORMATION AT THE TIME OF THE SALE. THE ISSUE WAS LONG EXIST BEFORE I PURCHASE THE CAR AFTER GOOGLED THE ISSUE ONLINE. THEY SHOULD HAVE DISCLOSED THE FAULTY ISSUE OF THE CAR AT THE TIME OF THE PURCHASE.

I started receiving error message, “Engine maintenance required Visit your Dealer“. I contacted the dealership and spoke with someone in parts and service. They advised me that the issue is the coolant bypass valve and the cost to replace it would be approximately $800 with parts and labor. They also stated that unfortunately this is a known defect and they can’t guarantee how long the repair would last because they would just be installing the same defective parts. In addition to that, they don’t have the parts and don’t know when they will get them because they are on back order. They said not repairing the problem could cause permanent damage to my vehicle. This should be a recall.

On Sunday,11/21/2021, sitting in my Toyota Rav4 TRD Off Road with my wife in an outside parking lot to a medical office, when we heard a loud pop/bang. We got out of the vehicle and discovered that the sun roof had shattered. Nothing hit my car. We were parked in it it for 15 minutes. There was nothing around the vehicle. I taped the window with Gorilla Tape. Dealership inspected the car and told me the warranty does not cover glass. Dangerous situation! Potential for flying glass! There is no warning system for this type of incident.

Toyota sent a letter saying there would be a solution by end of Q3. There isn’t. I asked them for a replacement and they sent me a letter saying no. I do not feel safe driving my car with a safety recall. They also suggested I can get a loaner vehicle but the dealership says there would be some out of pocket expenses because Toyota pays up to $40 a day and the loaner vehicle is over $40/a day

My coolant bypass valve in the engine malfunctioned and shorted at a mere 27,300 miles on the vehicle and I had to bring it into the dealership to be replaced. A coolant bypass valve failing or malfunctioning can cause the engine to overheat, catch fire, or cause complete seizure. Can also cause the vehicle to stall and possibly cause a crash or wreck. Toyota has acknowledged the problem in the RAV4’s but no recalls have been issued. Dealer knew exactly what the problem was when I mentioned that the ‘engine maintenance required’ light came up on my dashboard BEFORE mechanic diagnosed it and confirmed which tells me they are aware of the issue in these cars.

My Toyota 2020 RAV4 has a dangerous design flaw. It rolls when turned off and in drive mode. For example, my driveway is on an incline, and a couple times I have pulled into my driveway, gotten distracted, and I forgot to put the car in Park. When I hit the on/off button, the car rolls backwards, accelerating due to gravity. If you're not quick, you can end up rolling out into traffic, or running someone over that is behind your car. All the other cars I've ever owned didn't roll when the car was turned off unless you were in neutral. I believe this is a design flaw because I've spoken to a few other RAV4 owners that have experienced the same thing, and on one occasion, I tested it on another RAV4 and it was the same. I can see this being very dangerous. If you are standing outside of the car and hit the on/off button while it's in drive, you would get knocked down by the door, and your car would be rolling without you in the car.
