  • AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATIONCampaign 23V865000 · 20/12/2023

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Corolla, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, Lexus ES350, Lexus RX350, Lexus RX450H, 2021 Sienna Hybrid, Lexus ES250, 2020-2022 Camry, Camry Hybrid, and ES300H vehicles. A short circuit may develop in the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor, preventing the front passenger air bag from deploying.

Risk: An air bag that does not deploy during a crash increases the risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the sensor as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed in February 2024. Some final remedy owner letters were mailed October 31, 2024. Letters will continue to be mailed in phases through January 2026. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 23TB15/23TA15 Lexus 23LB03/23LA03.

  • ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLINGCampaign 20V064000 · 06/02/2020

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2020 Toyota Avalon Hybrid, Camry, Camry Hybrid and Lexus ES300h and 2019-2020 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid vehicles equipped with 2.5L 4-Cylinder engines. Porosity in the engine castings may result in cracks than can allow coolant to leak internally and/or externally.

Risk: A coolant leak can cause the engine to overheat and cause a vehicle stall in conventional gasoline vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, for all involved vehicles, the engine may get damaged mechanically, possibly resulting in an engine oil leak, increasing the risk of a fire.

Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the engine including the engine block, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began April 3, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's number for this recall is 20TA04. Lexus' number for this recall is 20LA02.

The low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail.

Risk: If the fuel pump fails, the engine can stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump assembly with an improved one, free of charge. I went a few months ago to Toyota to get an air flow valve replaced from a safety campaign for Toyota. My car engine light came on. Afterwards it never went off. My car shuts off after getting gas . Car doesn’t start for 20 mins. Coolant is leaking . Car idling high as if the valve that was replaced was faulty. The car acts like it’s gonna shut off. I take good care of my car & several people have the same complaints please investigate this. I don’t have the money to replace something that isn’t my fault.

My sunroof exploded with outward shards for no apparent reason while driving so an impact from road debris seem unlikely. Dealer.inspected and says it's not a warranty issue and to file a comprehensive claim with my insurance. I have read that exploding sunroofs are a problem with some Toyotas. But Toyota refuses to address the problem. Thankfully as startling as the incident was it didn't make me have an accident but could see others may not be so lucky

  • 12/09/2025· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

My 2020 Camry has been nothing but a problem and Toyota is noncompliant with helping me. The service recall for the fuel pump was fixed at Vaughn Toyota in Bastrop La .. a week later I still had the same issues. They refused to put another fuel pump on my car even thought the fuel pump had a one year warranty. I then took it to Landers in Little Rock and since I had “codes” I had to pay $180 diagnostic fee. Fast forward to now, still have the same crappy fuel pump. I took it to Ryburn Toyota and was told to replace the charcoal canister and vent valve . That was $1000. Problem not fixed. All my lights stay on, I often get a charging system error notification. It goes into reduced power mode. And has left me stranded numerous times on the side of the road. I want whatever is wrong with my car fixed. I have never owned a vehicle with this many problems. I thought Toyota’s were good vehicles but I promise if I ever get rid of this one, I will not purchase another Toyota vehicle again.

  • 12/09/2022· AIR BAGSCrash

The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Camry XLE. The contact stated while driving approximately 26 MPH, an 18-wheeler vehicle crashed into the rear of his vehicle twice. The air bags failed to deploy and the seat belts failed to engage. The message "Air Bag System Malfunction" was displayed. The contact sustained whiplash and hit his head against the steering wheel. The contact sought medical assistance the next day and was diagnosed with a herniated disk and torn muscles in the back. As a result, the contact had undergone left shoulder surgery. The contact's sister sustain whiplash, hit her head and face against the passenger's side door and sustained soreness and bruises on the right side of her face. The emergency units transported the contact's sister to the hospital where she received medical assistance. A police report was filed. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to his residence. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired for air bags and seat belt failure. The contact stated that the event data recorder (EDR) indicated that the vehicle had only sustained one impact; however, the vehicle had sustained two impacts as it was rear-ended twice. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but did not provide any assistance or explanation for the erroneous report of the event data recorder (EDR). The failure mileage was approximately 17,000.

  • 12/08/2025· POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

Have whining from transmission. When trying to accelerate the car does not shift into gears correctly and there is hesitance and delay. Have issues merging on highway and regular traffic due to hesitance and delay. Car can jerk when accelerating. Had dealership inspect twice at different dates. The dealership said nothing was wrong and that the hesitance and delay was just how the car operates. Discovered that other Toyota Camry's had same issue under T-SB-0008-21. Would like for our model year Toyota Camry be added for repairs.

Two instances of parking the 2020 Toyota Camry and electrical system going "dead" within 24-36 hours. Battery drained/unable to enter via FOB/unable to start vehicle. Car maintenance and inspection occurred in November 2, 2022. Testing of battery by Toyota Service Center confirmed battery was not issue and worked as normal. Battery less than two years old. Overall safety was not at risk, as car was parked in garage during both instances (March 2022/November 2022). Problem was not able to be reproduced. No warnings were given prior to either event by warning lamps/messages.

  • 12/05/2025· POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE

My 2020 Toyota Camry SE suffered a sudden and premature transmission failure at only 114,000 miles. I am a college student and I cannot afford a major repair like this on top of my monthly car payment. The car began showing hesitation and sluggish acceleration on cold starts for a few months, but then suddenly went into limp mode with the Check Engine and Traction Control lights on. The screen displayed a warning saying ‘Malfunction in the electronic control of the engine/throttle/transmission.’ The vehicle became unsafe to drive because it would barely accelerate. If this had happened while I was merging onto a highway, it could have caused an accident. Lakeland Toyota told me the transmission has ‘internal failure’ and quoted me over $8,000 for a replacement. They did not provide detailed diagnostic codes or open the transmission to confirm the mechanical failure — they just saw a code and declared it dead. As a student with limited income, this puts me in a terrible financial situation. I still owe monthly payments on this car and now cannot even drive it. After researching online, I learned that MANY 2018–2020 Camry owners are experiencing similar transmission problems (UA80/UA80E), including hesitation, shuddering, harsh shifting, and early failure. Some owners have reported full transmission failure under 100k miles. There is even a public petition documenting these issues. This appears to be a PATTERN, not an isolated case. A transmission should NOT fail this early on a Toyota, and this sudden loss of power poses a serious safety risk. The vehicle is currently at a transmission specialist for a second opinion, but this may become a widespread issue affecting thousands of Camry owners. I am asking NHTSA to investigate the 2018–2020 Camry transmission problems before more drivers experience unexpected failures in traffic

IT WAS TOWED TO TOYOTA REPAIR SHOP, WHICH RE-CHARGED THE BATTERY AND INSTALLED DCM RESET AND FIRMWARE UPDATE T-SB-0095-20. THE REPAIR REPRESENTATIVE REFERRED TO POSSIBLE PROBLEM WITH A RECENT AUTO SOFTWARE UPDATE THAT MAY HAVE WORN DOWN BATTERY WITH NUMEROUS INCOMPLETE (UNINITIATED) IGNITION STARTS. THIS SOFTWARE FIX WAS APPLIED FOR THIS SPECIFIC INSTANCE, BUT IS NOT BEING GENERALLY APPLIED TO ALL VEHICLES. THE REPRESENTATIVE SAID THAT THE PROBLEM WAS NOT CAUSED BY ANYTHING I DID, AND INDICATED I MAY WANT TO WATCH FOR TOYOTA CONSUMER NOTICES FOR FURTHER REPAIR. THE TOYOTA TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN, DCM RESET AND FIRMWARE UPDATE T-SB-0095-20 (DATED SEPTEMBER 30, 2020, ACCESSIBLE ONLINE), INDICATES SOME 2020-2021 MODELS MAY EXHIBIT "DEPLETED 12V VEHICLE BATTERY WHEN IN IG-OFF". THE SOFTWARE UPDATE IS NOT BEING APPLIED TO ALL VEHICLES, AND THERE WAS NO ASSURANCE THAT THE PROBLEM IS FIXED AND WILL NOT OCCUR AGAIN. AS A DRIVER, THIS LEAVES ME VULNERABLE TO BEING STRANDED WITHOUT TRANSPORTATION, AND RELIANT ON HELP FROM STRANGERS IF PARKED IN REMOTE RECREATION AREAS WITHOUT CELL PHONE ACCESS; AN UNSAFE SITUATION.

The tire size is 215/55R17. Within a span of 10 months, THREE of my tires have needed to be replaced, with one of them almost causing me a very serious car accident. The issue appears to be with the sidewall failing. The first time this happened was in September of 2021. I brought the defective tire to a local Bridgestone retail center and my complaint/concerns were completely dismissed by the in-store employee and corporate. The employee contacted corporate on the phone and was told there were no recalls on my Specific tires. The employee insisted that because there was no current “recall,” my tire was not defective. He also stated that I should “trust him” because he’s “been in the business for 25+ years”. Even though there was NO nail or sharp object found, Bridgestone had insisted that I must have ran over something. Relying on their knowledge and response in this matter, I went ahead and purchased the same exact tire at BJs wholesale club. ( I even took the tire to Toyota for inspection and they couldn’t find anything lodged in the tire or evidence to indicate that I ran over any object. They were completely baffled.) Approximately 2 months ago, a second tire had a very similar issue occur out of nowhere. It happened when I was not even a five minute drive from my house. Yet again, the issue was with the sidewall. The tire was damaged beyond repair and I had to get the “donut” put on so that I could drive my car to a tire center to purchase a new tire. Then (not even two weeks later) a different tire went flat in the same exact manner. This incident happened within less than 10 minutes from my house. Nothing appeared to have pierced my tire. I even returned to the area where it went flat and found no evidence of possible road hazards or sharp objects. The rips were located in multiple areas of the tire. This time the damage was much worse and once again the tire was damaged beyond repair. I am fully convinced the tires are defective.

OUR VEHICLE WAS STRUCK FROM THE DRIVERS SIDE - REAR AT AN ESTIMATED 60MPH SPEED DIFFERENCE. (IT IS THOUGHT WE WERE SLOWED TO APPROX 25MPH, OTHER CAR WAS PROBABLY 80MPH OR MORE). THIS HAPPENED ON I95 IN LUMBERTON NC. THE OTHER VEHICLE WAS IN LEFT LANE, WE WERE IN RIGHT LANE. THE OTHER VEHICLE SWERVED INTO OUR LANE HITTING US "QUARTERING" FROM LEFT REAR. FORCE WAS HARD ENOUGH TO DEFORM RIGHT SIDE OF CAR WHICH CAME IN CONTACT WITH NOTHING. AS THE DRIVER, I STRUCK THE INTERIOR WITH ENOUGH FORCE TO CAUSE A "SEVERE" CONCUSSION. NO SIDE CURTAINS DEPLOYED, AND I DO NOT BELIEVE THE SEAT BELTS TENSIONED TO RESTRAIN ME IN THE SEAT. MY LEFT SHOULDER, ARM, AND ELBOW WERE ALSO INJURED IN THE ACCIDENT. THE FRONT SEAT PASSENGER SUFFERED INJURIES TO HER LEFT ARM, AND RECOILED STRIKING THE INSIDE OF THE RIGHT INTERIOR. THIS CAUSED HEAD TRAUMA AS WELL. WE DON'T BELIEVE THE SEAT BELT TENSIONED. PASSENGER IN THE BACK SEAT, RIGHT SIDE ALSO SUFFERED INJURY. NOT AS SEVERE AS FRONT SEAT OCCUPANTS. HE WAS THROW AROUND IN THE VEHICLE, IT IS UNKNOWN IF HIS BELTS TENSIONED. ALL 3 HAD TO BE TRANSPORTED BY AMBULANCE FOR INJURIES SUFFERED. THERE IS A WARNING DISPLAYED IN THE DASH STATING, "SRS AIRBAG SYSTEM MALFUNTION VISIT YOUR DEALER" I BELIEVE HAD SEATBELTS TENSIONED, SIDE CURTAINS DEPLOYED, MY INJURIES WOULD BE MUCH LESS. THIS ACCIDENT OCCURRED 10/11/2020, WEATHER WAS OVERCAST BUT DRY. CRASH FORCE WAS SUFFICIENT TO CAUSE BODY WORK DEFORMATION ON RIGHT SIDE OF VEHICLE, WHICH CAME IN CONTACT WITH NO OBJECTS.
