⚠ Park outside — urgent recall
NHTSA has flagged a recall on this vehicle as severe (fire risk — park away from structures). Contact a dealer immediately; recall repairs are free.
- TRAILER HITCHESCampaign 23V181000 · 17/03/2023Park outside
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019-2023 Santa Fe, 2021-2023 Santa Fe HEV, 2022-2023 Santa Fe Plug-in HEV and Santa Cruz vehicles potentially equipped with a tow hitch harness installed as original equipment, or purchased as an accessory through a Hyundai dealership. Water accumulation on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board (PCB) may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire.
Risk: A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
Fix: Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the remedy is completed. Dealers will install a new fuse and wire extension kit as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed starting May 16, 2023. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 244. This recall is an expansion of previous recall number 22V-633.
- AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOWCampaign 18V715000 · 11/10/2018
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles. The Side Curtain Air Bag (SCAB) mounting bolts may interfere with and damage the air bags during deployment.
Risk: In the event of a crash, if the air bags become damaged during deployment they may not inflate properly, increasing the risk of injury.
Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will install a protective cover over the SCAB installation bolts, free of charge. The recall began December 3, 2018. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 177.

•What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? When ambient temperature is at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, sufficient heat is not produced from the vehicles defroster to keep the windshield from icing. Also, sufficient heat is not produced to keep vehicle occupants warm. A Hyundai dealership confirmed the problem and replaced the thermostat, but the problem still persists. •How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Visibility through the windshield cannot be maintained. Also, the cabin temperature is insufficient for safe transport of young children. •Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. •Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? It has been inspected and confirmed by a Hyundai dealership. The problem persists and has been an issue since the vehicle was purchased in 2019. The first winter that the vehicle was operated during (2020) was when the problem first presented. •Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? The water temperature gauge on the dash board “bounces” back and forth while driving the vehicle when the ambient temperature is at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. This has been reported to Hyundai corporate –Hyundai case # [XXX]. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Oil Pan leaks after an oil change. Oil pan has a hairline crack just below the drain plug after normal tightening of the plug. Excessive oil was found on my driveway. No obvious engine damage, considering the vehicle was only moved from one spot to the other. The dealer stated the oil pan isn't covered under warranty. I simple internet search revealed there was a high number of complaints. It was a "Do It Yourself repair." The cost to fix was to replace the oil pain, new tools and 5 quarts of oil.

PREVIOUS HYUNDAI VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE. AT THE TIME THE CAUSE WAS UNKNOWN. WAS FORCED BY HYUNDAI TO BUY BACK VEHICLE AND PURCHASED A BRAND NEW HYUNDAI VEHICLE. I WAS NEVER TOLD THAT THIS WAS A BRAND WIDE ISSUE AND THAT THE NEW VEHICLE I PURCHASED WOULD END UP UNDER THE SAME RECALL THAT CAUSED PREVIOUS VEHICLE TO CATCH FIRE. I AM TERRIFIED TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI TO EXPLAIN THE SITUATION AND HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH AN UNPROFESSIONAL CUSTOMER REPRESENTATIVE. I AM FEARFUL FOR MY LIFE IN THIS VEHICLE AND EXPLAINED WHEN I PURCHASED THE NEW ONE THAT I DID NOT WANT TO EVER GO THROUGH THIS SITUATION AGAIN.

Transmission: yes, available upon inspection I own a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe. I have brought it in for repairs on the transmission a couple of times. The check engine light has come on but the computer was not displaying the problem. I am aware that this is not uncommon for the year, make, and model. Recently, I was driving my car on a high-speed highway when the transmission went out. While suppressing the gas, the transmission slipped and would not accelerate. As cars were passing me on either side, my car decelerated and cars behind me came close to rear-ending me. Again, this was at high speeds and put my safety in jeopardy. I was finally able to find a gap in the cars and able to get to the shoulder but not after several minutes of unsafe conditions. After this incident, I brought it back to the service center and the computer analysis did display that it is an internal transmission problem. The service center has inspected the transmission. Yes, the warning lamps were displaying, first about 8 months prior. As stated previously, the actual problem was not displaying. Attached document is previous work done for transmission due to incorrect computer diagnostics.

"FCA" system disabled radar blocked" error came on while test driving on 3 separate occasions but no diagnostic code recorded, prior to taking possession they replaced a camera they thought to be the cause 11 days later during a snowy morning I got the same error again. Again it didn't register a code and I was told by the dealership no code, no problem. Spoke with Hyundai customer relations and was told I have to take it back to the dealership for them to diagnose it, and the condition has to be reproduced for them to note the error but We have not had snow since that morning therefore the system error has not reappeared. The likelihood of being able to reproduce the circumstance during business hours and be able to get it to them to witness the situation is minuscule at best. If this safety feature is deactivated when something as simple as a snowflake blocks the sensor then it isn't really a safety feature. The safety features contributed to my decision to purchase this vehicle (Nov 1st) but all I am told was the radar was blocked and therefore caused the deactivation, but again how can something as simple as a snowflake cause this error and the manufacturer not address this as a safety concern.

Vehicle is consuming oil at an exceptionally fast rate. In October 2025, when taken in for an oil change and my complaint of a burning smell upon quick acceleration, the technician documented no oil was found on the dipstick. Just a month later, in November 2025, the oil level was already extremely low, the vehicle was taken back to the dealer, and an oil consumption test is currently being administered. The vehicle is scheduled for an engine replacement in January 2026 after the consumption test is concluded.

At various times the vehicle will not start. It takes multi times to to start the vehicle. The starter and battery have been tested and both are in excellent condition. Both key phob batteries have been replaced and the vehicle at times won’t start but the dash lights turn on. After twice of trying to start the breaks get really stiff. I’ve learned if I get out of the vehicle and open the hood and close it the car will start then any other time getting out and back in it does not start. I even placed the key phob in the designated location of the battery died and still won’t start. The check engine is not on either.

I have unusable camera in my 2019 Sante Fe, that is not included in a recent recall. Tried to find what “Problem” actually is on current recall to compare to mine. My picture is too bright and contrast ruins ability to identify objects behind me. Is the recall based on a similar problem? As your current Hyundai recall states: "An inoperative rearview camera will reduce rearward visibility while driving in reverse, increasing the risk of injury to bystanders." Local dealership has tried to fix, but after almost a month has not. Question is should recall be extended beyond current model years?

Overly excessive oil consumption 2 Quarts every 3 or 4 days.no leaks. Engine gets so hot I don't have to turn on heater In winter. On going issue since 100,000 miles. EBS light stays on electronic parking brake switch does not work. Parking brake will randomly engage after vehicle is turned off. Dealership cannot duplicate issue. If cruse control is turned on the vehicles warning lights all of them will suddenly illuminate and the vehicle shuts off. alternator and battery replaced. Have not used cruse control since. Airbags never inflated in a front end crash at 45mph Most recently I started experiencing I intermittent trouble staring the car. Then one day it didn't start at all and smoke was coming from under the hood. Towed to mechanic , starter burnt up 155,000. $ 900 to replace then a couple days later I lost power on the freeway and the car started jerking and vibrating. Stopped Vehicle cut off and would not start. After 1hr I started and limped home. Vibration under 2000 RPMs and when stopped. Knocking noise under hood. Brand new spark plugs. Mechanic stated Cylinder 3;missfire was identified as a hole in a valve due to weak material now I have to replace engine. Oil consumption and excessive friction and heat is to blame. My car has been cared for like a baby it's all I have. I should not have to be responsible for this very cheaply made engine that was doomed to fail.

MY NEW 2019 HYUNDAI SANTE FE FROM THE TIME I BOUGHT IT HAD THE YELLOW CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON. IT SAID THE BSM SYSTEM WASN'T WORKING. THEN THE ENGINE WOULD NOT START ON 4 SEPARATE OCCASIONS. I HAD TO WAIT TO GET IT TO START. THERE HAVE BEEN 3 OCCASIONS WHEN IT DID START IT SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS GOING DIE, VERY SLUGGISH AND DIDN'T WANT TO ACCELERATE. THE RPM WOULD NOT INCREASE. IT ALSO STARTED 2 SEPARATE OCCASIONS IT LOST STEERING WHEEL POWER AND THE A/C STOPPED BLOWING COLD AIR. I HAD TO TURN IT OFF AND WAIT TO RESTART IT. IT IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP WAITING FOR THE BLIND SPOT MONITORING MODULES. THE FIRST TIME THEY REPLACED THE MODULE IT STILL SHOWED IT NOT WORKING. SO NOW IT IS UNDRIVABLE AT GENE MESSER HYUNDAI IN LUBBOCK TEXAS, THEY SAY IT'S NOT SAFE TO DRIVE SO I AM DRIVING A LOANER. THEY SAY THEY CAN'T DETERMINE WHY THE ENGINE DID THE DESCRIBED THINGS ABOVE. THESE THINGS HAPPENED WHILE IN MOTION AND PARKED.

Engine oil consumption issue. I have taken the vehicle in 4 times due to this they have. Changed hoses and even the oil pan but the engine still runs out of oil. On several occasions the oil light comes on within 1000 miles of a oil change and when I check it the system is completely out of oil. This means the lubrication system is running with no oil and likely has metal particles in it. I have contacted Hyundai corporate and the issues still has not been resolved. There needs to be a recall on these engines before they start blowing up. I uploaded files of thw most recent service nov 5th and the current odometer reading and oil level. 7 days later the oil level is low.

The seat is able to forward face up to 40 lbs with a seatbelt install and 35 lbs with a latch install. When trying to install this seat with the seatbelt the instruction manual states not to lock the seatbelt after install however if the seatbelt inst not locked the seatbelt moves easily with some pressure (i.e. child pushing legs against back seat) and then becomes so lose that is can fall over. ALternately, i have tried the install with locking the seatbelt and this solution only lasts 1-2 car rides longer. (i.e. i would need to reinstall my seat every other time my child rode in the car). Currently the seat is installed with the latch system as this is the only way to get a safe install however my son is currently 34lbs and it will soon be unsafe to ride rear facing with the latch system which will then force me to turn him front facing before I or my son are ready.

This vehicle requires 1-2 quarts of oil to be added to it weekly. It's all over the internet that many different models of Hyundais consume excessive amounts of oil. This puts others at risk due to damaging the engine and the possibility that the car will just stop completely while driving it. We have records to show how often and how much we have to add more oil every week.

Peeling paint as a result of manufacturing issue (no primer was ever added prior to paint). I have spoken with Hyundai twice and both times they have refused to repair since vehicle is no longer in warranty. WAS DRIVING ABOUT 30-35 MPH ON CURVY BACK ROAD WHEN SUDDENLY THE STEERING WHEEL COMPLETELY LOCKED UP. I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AND THE CAR WENT INTO THE ONCOMING LANE. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC OR IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A HEAD ON COLLISION. AFTERWARDS THE STEERING WHEEL EXHIBITED A POPPING/THUD NOISE WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY. DIDN'T FIX THE ISSUE. THAT TOOK ALMOST A MONTH. THEN THEY REPLACED THE RACK AND THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT. THAT STILL DIDN'T FIX THE SOUND. NOW THEY ARE REPLACING A CLOCK SPRING. THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT'S WRONG AND ARE JUST THROWING PARTS AT THE CAR HOPING IT'S FIXED. IT'S BEEN 44 DAYS AND GOING ON 3 REPAIRS. HYUNDAI SAYS I DON'T MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR A BUYBACK OR EXCHANGE AND HAVE FRANKLY BEEN EXTREMELY RUDE. I WILL NEVER TRUST THIS CAR WITH HOW THIS HAS BEEN HANDLED AND WILL NEVER BE GIVING MY BUSINESS TO THEM AGAIN.

I purchased my 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe on October 29, 2021. Since then, I’ve experienced a series of mechanical and electrical failures that I believe are far beyond normal for a vehicle of this age. - The remote start has never worked. - On October 20, 2023, the hatch latch failed. The only way to open it now is by climbing into the back and manually pulling the latch. - On October 27, 2023, the electric power steering failed. I had to replace the entire steering column at a cost of $4,000. - The paint began deteriorating prematurely and required a full repair. Hyundai covered this under warranty, but the cost was $8,000. - In early spring 2025, all coil packs had to be replaced due to misfires, costing approximately $500. - September 4, 2025, The car stalled while I was driving on a main road and I had to pull over. There were no warning lights and I started home. About a mile from home check engine light came on so contact mechanic. Ended up towing to a dealership and was told the engine must be replaced because the oil had burned off without any warning from the oil light indicator. The turbo also needs replacement. - The combined cost is $14,000. These failures have caused significant financial hardship and stress. I am currently $17,000 underwater on the loan, and the repair costs are overwhelming. The lack of warning before catastrophic engine damage is especially concerning. I believe these issues reflect systemic defects in the vehicle’s design and manufacturing. The repeated failure of critical components—especially the steering system and oil monitoring—make this the worst automotive experience I’ve ever had. I respectfully request that the NHTSA investigate these failures and determine whether Hyundai should be held accountable. Consumers deserve protection from vehicles with such extensive and costly problems.

2019 Hyundai Santa fe first owner after each use of the Auto Stop/ Start feature is guaranteed that in 24-48 hrs the car will stall at stop lights and take anywhere from 15-20 min to restart. The power to the electronics continues but the engine can't restart from the stop. It appears as of the feature takes the power from the alternator, starter and battery and drains it until the car can be restarted. Once it starts it drives well until the system is engaged again. I have chosen to not use the system and the car has not stall however once the use of the Auto/ Start Stop system is engaged for a day or two it will stall the vehicle from a stop mostly at stop lights after so much time on standby mode while using the Auto Start / Stop system. Dealer can not recreate the issue.

I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE AUGUST 1 AND DROVE IT HOME, 50 MILES, AT 75+ MPH. IMMEDIATELY I NOTICED A HIGH VIBRATION IN THE RIDE AS WELL AS LOOKING IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR THE CARS BEHIND ME WERE BLURRY FROM THE VIBRATION UNTIL I PLACE A FINGER ON THE MIRROR. I RETURNED TO THE DEALER THE NEXT DAY RELATING TO THE VIBRATION. THEY BALANCED THE FRONT TIRES. I RETURNED HOME AND THE VIBRATION WAS STILL THERE. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN AT THE DEALER 4 MORE TIMES WITH NO SOLUTION. I HAVE BEEN SUPPLIED WITH A RENTAL FOR A FEW DAYS AND WAS TOLD THE SUV WAS READY. I PICKED IT UP ON A SATURDAY AND ASKED FOR SOMEONE TO GO FOR A RIDE TO SEE IF THE VIBRATION WAS STILL THERE. NO ONE WAS AVAILABLE SO I DROVE IT HOME AND THE VIBRATION WAS STILL THERE. I RETURNED IT TO THE DEALER AND AN HYUNDIA ENGINEER TOOK IT FOR A TEST DRIVE UP TO 70MPH WHICH WAS IN THE CITY AND NOT HIGHWAY DRIVING. I HAD A CONFERENCE CALL WITH THE GM AND WAS TOLD THAT THE ENGINEER SAID ALL OF THE SUVS VIBRATED AND THIS ONE WAS MORE "PRONOUNCED" WHICH WAS NOT IN HIS REPORT TO HYUNDIA WHO I'VE BEEN IN CONTACT. I BELIEVE THIS VIBRATION IS NOT IN THE WHEELS, ONE TIRE WAS REPLACED, BUT MECHANICALLY ELSEWHERE. IT HAS BEEN AT THE DEALERSHIP SINCE 9/25/2018. I BELIEVE THIS SUV TO BE UNSAFE AND THAT OTHER COMPONENTS WILL FAIL. THIS IS MY 3RD SUV AND I'VE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE FIRST 2. ANOTHER ENGINEER IS SCHEDULED TO INSPECT IT 10/23/2018. The Forward Collision Assist would intermittently disable during driving. The Lane Keeping Assist light illuminated and would not allow me to disable it causing the vehicle to drive straight only and to make left or right turns extremely hard to turn the vehicle. This incident occurred on [XXX] and was dropped off at Johnson Hyundai in Wake Forest on that date. After a week of no contact of a diagnosis, I had to visit the dealer and was told the steering column was the issue and needed to be replaced. I contacted Hyundai America to report this issue and currently waiting on a response from their warranty to see if they will cover all or a percentage of the replacement of the steering column since my mileage is over their 100k (113k to be exact) coverage. While I appreciate their efforts, I also feel this could have resulted in a very serious incident had my daughter been driving on the highway when this occurred. Thankfully, she was picking me from home and it happened as we drove off from our house in our neighborhood. A steering column should outlast any other part(s) of a vehicle. If not, this is a huge safety concern. My [XXX] was also in the car at the time and I cannot even imagine how I would recover if something worse were to happen while he's on board. Hopefully this reporting will keep something bad from happening to others who own this type of vehicle but failed to report it. Thank you for your time. For the duration of the vehicle's ownership, it has underperformed and operated unpredictably under hard braking, specifically with relation to the vehicle's ABS system. The conditions have caused meto never drive the car in snow, as this weather condition in particular exacerbates the braking issues and makes the car unsafe. Issues with the braking/ABS include: The ABS activating at slow speeds in all conditions, even on dry roads The ABS activating and preventing the vehicle from being emergency stopped in adverse conditions The ABS activating and exponentially extending the braking distance until it disnegages The ABS, once activated, does not stop unless the brake pedal is lifted from its initial activation position The vehicle doesn't appear to have any mechancial braking issues. Everything seems to be related to the ABS system, wheel-speed sensors and/or vehicle-management systems. The overall braking experience in this vehicle with the ABS on is that it simply will not stop within a safe braking distance window. The only way to stop this vehicle is without ABS. There is no other way to safely stop this vehicle with ABS. I have reached out to my Hyundai dealer and Hyndai corporate directly, both times being dismissed without anyone attempting to recreate the braking issues. I have a life's worth of experience driving in snow and multiple ABS activations in a range of vehicles. This is abnormal based on all of the experiential knowledge I possess, as well as a lifelong interest in cars. While I am not an engineer, I possess enough firsthand and academic vehicle experience to recognize the abnormality of this vehicle braking operation.

This is the 2019 Santa Fe that this has occurred on (formally owned) as well as two 2020 Santa Fe that we now own within the last 2 years. The windshield does not take rock hits well. On all three vehicles a rock strike on the windshield not only left a large star impact, but the crack from the impact reaches all the way to the roof pillar. The crack is long. I believe the windshield glass is substandard and needs to be looked into closer as being a possible safety risk. Replacing the windshield and camera recalibration is expensive.

The contact owns a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while at a complete stop with the auto engine Start/Stop feature activated, the vehicle would intermittently shut off upon depression of the accelerator pedal with several warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact would be forced to turn off the vehicle and open the driver’s side door to reset the vehicle; after multiple attempts, the engine would restart and resume normal operation. The contact had taken the vehicle to two separate dealers, Freehold Hyundai (4065 US-9, Freehold, NJ 07728) and Greg May Hyundai (1501 TX-340 Loop, Waco, TX 76712)] on multiple occasions but neither dealer was able to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and provided a case number. The contact was referred back to the dealer for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.

Electric power steering failed after starting car and beginning drive. No power assist was present. Concurrent with this failure the instrument panel displayed warnings that Blind Spot Detection System and Lane Keeping System were not working and needed attention. Codes for the later 2 problems were sent to central computer, but no power steering error code was sent. Disconnecting battery from car nor turning car off and on had no effect on errors. Let car set idle for 3 days. Restarted car and all problems were gone. Taking car to dealer on 9/20/22 in attempt to prevent future reoccurrence.

AFTER DRIVING MY SANTE FE FOR LITTLE OVER 1000 MILES, I WAS WAITING BEHIND SEVERAL VEHICLES AT A STOP LIGHT IN HYATTSVILLE AND MY VEHICLE SHUT OFF AND WOULDN'T START. AFTER TRYING TO RESTART THE VEHICLE FOR MORE THAN 15 MINUTES, IT FINALLY STARTED. I DROVE TO THE NEXT STOP LIGHT AND HAD TO STOP AND THE VEHICLE FAILED TO RESTART. THIS HAPPEN TWO MORE TIMES AND THEN FINALLY IT STARTED AND I DROVE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP IN GAITHERSBURG (FITZGERALD AUTO MALL). I REPORTED THE INCIDENT AND THEY CLAIM TO BE UNABLE TO RECAPITULATE THE INCIDENCE. AT AROUND 5014 MILES, WHEN I CAME TO A STOP LIGHT IN DC, THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF AGAIN AND WOULD RESTART. THE COPS CAME AND PUSH ME OUT OF THE ROAD AND I WAS THEN ABLE TO RESTART. I DROVE TO THE NEXT STOP LIGHT AND THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF AGAIN AND WOULD START. EVENTUALLY, THE VEHICLE STARTED AFTER APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES. I DROVE THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS A PERFORMANCE RECALL ON THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICE AND GIVEN BACK TO ME. THE FOLLOWING DAY DRIVING ON GERMANTOWN ROAD THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF AGAIN AT A STOP LIGHT. I CALL THE DEALER AND THEY ASKED THAT I TAKE IT BACK THE NEXT DAY. ON MY WAY TO THE DEALER IN BUMPER TO BUMPER TRAFFIC THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF AGAIN. I TOOK BACK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND TOLD THEM THAT I HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN THE VEHICLE ANYMORE AND THEY SHOULD REPLACE IT. THE MATTER WAS REPORTED TO THE MANUFACTURER WHO REFUSE TO REPLACE THE VEHICLE AND OFFER $500 COMPENSATION FOR MY INCONVENIENCE WHICH I REFUSE TO ACCEPT. I AM SEEKING YOUR ASSISTANCE TO THIS ISSUE. P.S. I DO HAVE PICTURE OF THE INFORMATION THAT WAS DISPLAYED ON THE DASHBOARD AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENCE AND MY NIECE WAS WITH ME ON TWO OF THOSE OCCASIONS.
