  • 12/31/2023· SUSPENSION

On January 30th 2023 we made an appointment to take our 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport to our local dealership in Newmarket Ontario Canada due to a clunking in the front end of the vehicle. On inspection our 2018 Santa Fe Sport was identified as having a BROKEN COIL SPRING on the driver side. Along with this inspection it was also noted the passenger strut/shock had been leaking and was out of fluid. The Newmarket Hyundai Dealership considered this to be an emergency repair. This was determined because the coil and or both coils could totally break and puncture the front tires. This information I obtained from the Hyundai recall 167!!! Although according to the recall seemed to be only in America we truly believe our 2018 Santa Fe Sport in Canada falls into the same category of the Hyundai recall 167. It has cost us a considerable amount of money as I personally am on a Disability Government Pension as well as my wife is also on a fixed Income Retirement Pension. As for our last 3 Brand New Purchases have been nothing but Hyundai Vehicles for their reliability Safety and long lasting enjoyment!!!! That being said we are a little disappointed that this front end Coil Spring Shock/Strut issue has now made us scared of what Could have happened because of this defect that does not seem to apply at the moment in Canada. We were certainly hoping to purchase at least 1 more Hyundai SUV Product or a Hyundai vehicle with continued Reliability Safety and Always a Pleasure to Drive Product. Unfortunately this occurence has caused us a considerable amount of doubt now as we were truly scared for our lives after the issue was diagnosed by the Hyundai Dealership. My wife and I would truly like to continue to believe in the Hyundai Product of Vehicles but are now extremely concerned about Reliability and Safety at this point. According to the diagnosis there could have been a CATASTROPHIC INCIDENT!!!

  • 12/29/2025· ENGINE

The vehicle developed loud engine knocking and abnormal noise consistent with known Hyundai engine defects. The vehicle is unsafe to operate and has been retained at an authorized Hyundai dealership since October 25, 2025. Hyundai vehicles with similar engine failures have been documented to catch fire, including while parked. Despite the known defect pattern, the manufacturer is refusing warranty coverage, alleging lack of complete oil change records, without providing proof that maintenance caused the failure. This represents a serious safety risk to occupants and the public. My family includes a child with a motor disability, which significantly increases the danger in the event of fire or engine failure.

  • 12/29/2023· ENGINE

This is a certified preowned vehicle. I am the second owner. I do my own maintenance. Currently this engine/vehicle has 64553 miles, I noticed it starting to use oil around the high 40k mile mark. There are no oil leaks. I have to add oil multiple times between oil changes and I just read that some of these can lock up and completely stop. I suspect this would be caused by people not checking their oil regularly however I am concerned that is the oil consumption is bad enough that this can happen at any time while driving so I wanted to add my complaint to any other existing complaints.

THE CAR BEGAN SHUTTERING WHILE DRIVING DOWN A MAIN STREET (45-50MPH). WHEN WE PULLED OVER WE SMELLED GASOLINE AND BURNING. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO HYUNDAI SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT INFORMED MY THE FUEL INJECTORS WERE LEAKING CAUSING A FIRE. THE ARE REPLYING THE FUEL INJECTORS AND TOLD ME IT WOULD BE WISE TO HAVE THEM REPLACE ALL SPARKS PLUGS ($190) WHILE THEY HAD THE ENGINE OPENED UP.

  • 12/26/2024· ENGINE

2018 Hyundai Santefe 2.4L engine burned oil at a high rate and due to this caused 4k oil changes obsolete. The car need an oil change every 2k miles and still would have high build up. Hyundai claimed engine failure was due to gaps in the oil changes them being done around 4.5k miles in the start. Many people have had engine failures with these car and they are still selling them with the defective engine to this date and not warning the buyers about the problems with these cars and are forcing the second hand buyers to pay $6-12k outta pocket to repair these cars after a year of owning them. I think Hyundai should be held accountable for these actions after they know these engines are defective and they still have them on their car lots for someone to stroll in and buy a $17k car with previous owners that will fail within the next year of ownership. Attached is maintence record for the vehicle.

    ENGINE PROBLEM

  • 12/19/2024· ENGINE

I was on the highway and pressed the gas and the car started shaking. Wouldn’t go up in speed so I pulled off the highway and parked it. Checked the oil and it was almost empty even though I had an oil change about a month ago. Service center says it need a whole new engine at 108k miles. How is this possible? They say there were pieces of the valve in the fourth cylinder which also had lots of oil in it. I bought this car used and am only the second owner. Surely there is something Hyundai can do if they know about this issue.

  • 12/19/2023· ENGINE

HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION: To the documented tune of 40 quarts consumed April17 - December 15, 2023, encompassing 24,116 driven miles. Hyundai America and this dealer knows all about this issue and is stalling on the remedy because it requires total engine replacement. Presently I am experiencing a P1326 engine knock sensor fault and I'm told by my mechanic a prospective catalytic converter failure due to high oil consumption. Experiencing loss of power and NO acceleration merging onto highway.

MY VEHICLE HESITATES RANDOMLY UPON ACCELERATION AFTER HAVING STOPPED.....GOING FROM FIRST GEAR TO THIRD....IT FEELS LIKE IT IS ABOUT TO STALL, SO I LET UP ON THE GAS PEDAL AND THEN IMMEDIATELY PRESS IT AGAIN TO ACCELORATE.....AS I THEN ACCELERATE, THE VEHICLE LURCHES FORWARD ABRUPTLY, JERKING EVERYONE INSIDE THE VEHICLE....IN READING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, IT SEEMS TO HAVE OCCURED IN YOUR 2017 SANTA FE SPORT SUVS.....

  • 12/17/2019· STEERING

STEERING EXHIBITS "STICTION" AFTER DRIVING FOR 20-30 MINUTES. THIS BECOMES WORSE AS SPEED IS INCREASED. SMALL MOVEMENTS OF THE WHEEL PRODUCE NO STEERING EFFECT BUT RESISTANCE IS FELT. WHEN THE RESISTANCE IS OVERCOME, THE RESULT IS SLIGHT OVER STEER. UNDER THESE CONDITIONS IT IS DIFFICULT TO DRIVE IN STRAIT LINE AS CONSTANT CORRECTIONS AND RE-CORRECTIONS ARE REQUIRED BACK AND FORTH. THE EFFECT IS THAT THE STEERING FEELS TO "FREEZE" UNTIL A MINIMUM BREAK OUT FORCE IS APPLIED, RESULTING IN AN OVERSHOOT PAST THE INTENDED POINT. IT IS SIMILARLY NECESSARY TO APPLY A POSITIVE RETURN TO CENTER FORCE TO RETURN TO STRAIT, AS THE NORMALLY PRESENT SELF CENTERING FEEL IS NOT PRESENT FOR SMALL STEERING ANGLES. THE PROBLEM CAN SOMETIMES BE DETECTED AFTER BEING AT REST FOR A FEW MOMENTS BUT IS NOT INTRUSIVE AT SLOW SPEED. HOWEVER, FROM ~40 UP IT IS VERY TIRING TO STAY IN LANE. HAVE WORKED WITH ONE DEALER WHO PERFORMED A SAS CALIBRATION WITH NO IMPROVEMENT. THEY CLAIM "CANNOT REPRODUCE" BUT SPEND MOST EFFORT TRYING TO PERSUADE ME THAT THE STEERING IS NORMAL. HOWEVER, THE ISSUE DID NOT SHOW UP UNTIL ~ 10,000 MILES WHICH INCLUDED LONG ROAD TRIPS ON THE INTERSTATE WITH NO ISSUES. HAVE REFERRED ISSUE TO HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS WHO HAVE ASKED ME TO WORK WITH ANOTHER DEALER - CURRENTLY WAITING FOR A CALL BACK.

  • 12/13/2024· UNKNOWN OR OTHER

  • 12/13/2021· UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE

There appears to be a problem with the intake manifold. Car is throwing a code of P200A. The baffles get stuck causing the car to lose power, usually 3 times in a row. I nearly got rear ended twice because of this and it threw my husband an myself toward the window.

  • 12/13/2019· EXTERIOR LIGHTING

PURCHASED VEHICLE IN JUNE 2018 AND NOTICED A PROBLEM WITH HEADLIGHTS, SHADOW ON ROADWAY WHEN DRIVING. I NOTICED IN HOUSING THAT THERE WERE FINGER PRINTS ON LENSES AND TOOK VEHICLE BACK TO DEALER FOR REMEDY...THEY REPLACED HEADLIGHT ON DRIVER'S SIDE. DID NOT THINK ANYTHING ELSE ABOUT IT UNTIL I DROVE THE VEHICLE DURING DARKNESS. SHADOWS WERE OBSERVED ON SIDE OF ROAD THAT COULD AND DID HIDE BIKERS/WALKERS ON THE SIDE OF THE ROADWAY. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION OF THE LIGHTS WHILE PARKED, I NOTICED THAT THESE SHADOWS WERE ALSO OBSERVED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. PASSENGERS IN VEHICLE ALSO NOTICED HEADLIGHT PROBLEMS ON BOTH SIDES OF VEHICLE. I CONTACTED DEALER ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS MADE THAT WAY DURING MANUFACTURING. AS TIME PASSED, ANYTIME THAT I TOOK VEHICLE OUT DURING NIGHT TIME HOURS, WHETHER ON THE HIGHWAY, INTERSTATE, OR COUNTRY ROAD, THESE DARK SPOTS WERE ALWAYS VISIBLE AND CONTINUE TO PREVENT ME AS A DRIVER FROM SEEING THE ROADWAY IN ITS ENTIRETY. A PHOTO IS ATTACHED THAT WAS TAKEN TODAY, BUT THE PROBLEM HAS PERSISTED AND HAVE MET WITH NO SOLUTION BEING OFFERED BY THE DEALER OR MANUFACTURER. I DECIDED TO FILE A FORMAL COMPLAINT ON THIS ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE'S LIGHTING PROBLEMS.

  • 12/12/2024· ENGINE

The component that is malfunctioning is my engine. I took it into the dealership and they said I had cylinder scoring on my engine from excessive oil consumption. My safety was put as risk as my car threw itself into limp mode in the middle of the high way while going over 70 mph. I had to immediately pull over on the side of the highway and somehow get it back home while not being able to accelerate fully. My car is not drivable in this mode as it is unsafe. This issue has been confirmed by a dear shop although they refuse to replace the engine unless I pay for it out of pocket which is not possible. The vehicle component was inspected at the dealership. There was no prior warning to the engine issues. If there had been oil consumption issues before I had just recently bought the vehicle and there was no way of me knowing.

  • 12/12/2024· ENGINE

The contact owns a 2018 Hyundai Santa FE. The contact stated that while driving at 30 MPH, the was a burning oil smell permeating the interior of the vehicle. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the piston rings in cylinders one and three. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V301000 (Engine), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 7,000.

  • 12/12/2022· ENGINE

My 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe has a blown engine and will cost over $9000 to replace. Unfortunately my car is out of warranty at 120,000 miles. It has become known to me that this particular car, and thousands of others, has known problems with the engines. So much so, that a software update for a sensor was available in 2017, oil consumption issues and civil law suits have been highly publicized. I was never notified of the software update, which would have extended my warranty to 10 years and 120,000 miles. I was diligent in oil change and maintenence on my car yet of no fault of my own the engine needs replaced. I believe Hyundai has been aware of these defects and did nothing to rectify the company-wide problem, just hoping many cars would fall out of warranty first. I have been told that since I am not the original owner and the car is out of warranty it would cost over $9000 to replace the engine ( the Kelly Blue value on my car should be $8000- $9000). Additionally, recall campaign #953 would have likely recognized the engine issues, but I was never contacted by Hyundai regarding the recall, and just found out about it when my car was in for service.

  • 12/11/2025· UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE

I have been experiencing issues with oil consumption, having to get oil changes every 2 months and sometimes monthly with no reported leaks from 2 different mechanics. I have been very high maintenance over my oil. While I was driving on the highway, my vehicle began to shake and a knocking sound was heard. I felt the vehicle begin to jerk but no warning lights were on. I was no longer able to drive and had to pull over and wait for a tow to my mechanic's garage. The mechanic let me know there was an issue with the engine, specifically the 3rd cylinder and the piston. It does not put out as much pressure as it is supposed to. I brought the vehicle to the dealership after and they confirmed this was an issue and quoted me $8700 in repairs. There were no warning lights and no engine lights prior to this happening. I was informed by my mechanic that this is a known issue with Hyundai in their 2018 models having failing engines. I purchased the vehicle certified pre-owned with a guarantee from the dealership that I was purchasing a reliable vehicle that should have no issues of this degree.

  • 12/08/2024· ENGINE

  • 12/07/2022· ENGINE

The contact owns a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. The contact stated that while driving approximately 60 MPH, the vehicle made a loud banging sound coming from the engine compartment. The instrument panel illuminated with several unknown warning lights. The vehicle then lost motive power. The contact was able to coast to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the engine failed due to a connecting rod going through the engine. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was informed that the repair would not be covered under warranty or recall. The approximate failure mileage was 97,000.

  • 12/06/2023· ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

The contact owns a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The contact stated that the power steering and power brake functionality were still operable. The contact pulled the vehicle over and attempted to restart the vehicle however, after several attempts he stopped. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that there had been failure of pistons and rods in cylinders #1 and #3. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be rebuilt. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V226000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

I bought my 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe 3.3L a year and a half ago with 58k miles from a dealer in Clarksville, MD. On October 18th 2022 with 70k miles my Hyundai Santa Fe starting making a loud noise in engine so I took it to a Hyundai dealer where I was told my engine would need to be replaced and was quoted 19.1k to replace it. I'm the second owner of the car so technically not under warranty. Hyundai is paying half of repair and rental extended warranty is paying the other half and a 10 day rental. Car has been there for a month parts still aren't there and was told it could take months to get my car back.

  • 11/23/2024· FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Upon acceleration from a stopped or rolling stop the vehicle hesitates to propel causing a dangerous situation when entering traffic. Dealer claims its not bad and that the manufacturer is only going to suggest fuel injector cleaner. Fuel injector clener was tried with no improvement. Upon research i have found this to be a common problem with this model. This is not the first problem we have had related to this system. Programming has been adjusted in the past to fix another problem which tells me this could be a computer problem.

  • 11/23/2022· UNKNOWN OR OTHER

I had to take my car to my local dealership (twice) because of an emergency situation with my gas door. My gas door would not open and I had to have looked at and was told that the gas door release solenoid stop working. As a result it had to be replaced. Also the inside fuel switch to open the door also had to be replaced. I have found out through research that this is a known problem on Hyundai Santa Fe’s going back to 2013(maybe earlier than that) to present. and has not been properly fixed or addressed so the issue will stop occurring. Side note: Also due to my gas door not wanting to open I nearly did not make it to work because I could not get my gas door open, to be able to pump gas.

THE COMPLAINT IS IN REGARDS THE ACCELERATION FROM EITHER A ROLLING SLOW OR FROM A STOP TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC OR OPEN LANE NEXT TO YOU ON THE FREEWAY. WHEN YOU NEED ACCELERATE I'M GETTING A SEVERE LAG OR NORESPONSE FROM THE ACCELERATOR. IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS I'VE HAD TWO OCCASIONS WHERE I NEEDED SOME QUICK ACCELERATION IN ORDER TO AVOID A BAD SITUATION AND THE CAR JUST BASICALLY DIDN'T ACCELERATE CAUSING THE OTHER DRIVERS TO HAVE TO BRAKE IN ORDER TO AVOID A NEAR COLLISION. I'VE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS ISSUE WITH THIS CAR NOW SINCE I PURCHASED IT. TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND HAD ONE OF THE SERVICE TECHS DRIVE WITH ME SAID WELL IT WAS IN THE ECO-MODE SO YOU CAN EXPECT THAT BUT I'M HERE TO TELL YOU THAT IT IS UNACCEPTABLE THAT WHEN YOU PUSH ON ACCELERATOR THE CAR DANGEROUSLY HESITATES AND IS GOING TO GET SOMEBODY BADLY INJURED. SO TODAY IT HAPPENED TO ME AGAIN ON NORTHBOUND I-5 IN TACOMA, WA, I WAS TRYING TO GET INTO ANOTHER LANE IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC I HAD ACCELERATE QUICKLY THE CAR JUST SEVERELY HESITATED FOR 1-2 SECONDS AND DID NOTHING??. AFTER THIS INCIDENT I DROVE THE CAR DIRECTLY TO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP IN RENTON WASHINGTON AND TOLD THEM THAT I WOULD NOT DRIVE THE CAR ANYMORE UNTIL SOMEBODY LOOKED AT IT THAT THERE WAS A SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE AND THAT SOMEBODY WAS GOING TO GET HURT BADLY. IT APPEARS THAT MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE.. I HAVE A 2018 HYUNDAI SANTA FE ULTIMATE 2.0 ALL WHEEL DRIVE. I TRIED TESTING IT IN SPORT MODE TO SEE IF THE PERFORMANCE WOULD BE A LITTLE BIT BETTER AND IT DID ALSO HESITATE IN THE SPORT MODE AS WELL. WHEN YOU PUNCH THE ACCELERATOR FROM A CREEPING SPEED OR A ROLLING IN SLOW TRAFFIC AND WANTING TO ACCELERATE TO A DIFFERENT LANE OR COMING OUT OF A PARKING LOT ONTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC IS REALLY WHEN YOU NOTICE ISSUE. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN, PLEASE ADVISE. THANK YOU.

I am afraid to drive this vehicle anywhere now. This incident happened with no warning.

This is just a follow-up to request an Expedited Hearing regarding the Hyundai Santa Fe because the Engine Stallings, Oil Consumption (about 2 qts. every 1000 miles) Tailpipe Smoking problems are getting worse. It's becoming a Major Safety Hazard. Engine Stalling example: With both kids (girl [XXX] & boy [XXX] ) in the SUV Driving approx. 50 mph the Engine Stalled and I could not steer the SUV. I hit the curve to avoid the 50 mph oncoming traffic and a catastrophic accident. This incident (about 57,000 miles) and the subsequent 12 to 15 Stallings were reported to Hyundai and is why we are desperately requesting the Expedited Hearing. Many of the Engine Stallings were reported to Hyundai before the Hyundai original Manufacturer 60,000 mile warranty Expired in 10/21. HMA and Vandergriff Hyundai has not repaired the vehicle and is responsible for not Honoring Promises (documented) to test and repair the SUV that cause us to drive the vehicle past the 60,000 mile limited warranty. Per Hyundai Case Managers and Vandergriff Service Managers and Advisors (documented) the Engine Stallings, Oil Consumption/Tailpipe Smoking problems are caused by the manufacture defective engine. These Engine Stalling issues (from [XXX] > [XXX]) are cited in the Federal Class-Action Lawsuit Settlement (which includes our SUV) against Hyundai but Hyundai has not corrected the problem. The class-action settlement provides lifetime warranty repair of this problem. Hyundai has documented these problems via HMA’s 11 case #’s [XXX], [XXX], [XXX] , [XXX] , [XXX] , [XXX], [XXX], [XXX] , [XXX] , [XXX] & [XXX] . The forced out-of-pocket expenses (rentals, loaner cars, repairs, inconveniences etc.) caused by these issues has exceeded $32,000 to which we have not been reimbursed. Re: the Oil Consumption causing Tailpipe Smoking Problems Currently, A California Class-Action Lawsuit says that over 2 million cars in America has the Tailpipe Smoking problems thus making this issue INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My car Engine stopped working while I was driving to work. Middle of traffic was not safe and the safety of others was effected because my car was unable to move, it was a high risk dangerous situation. Problem was reported to mechanic as well as insurance company (geico) car was pushed by strangers into a nearby parking lot, which then I waited for a towing truck. The car was inspected by a mechanic who then told me to have it inspected by Hyundai and Hyundai has told me due to lack of maintenance my car stopped working and there is nothing they can do. I am insulted by the lack of concern Hyundai has had for what they have put me and my livelihood through. I am aware of the recall on these vehicles. Engine :2.4L I4 DGI DOHC 16V. The Engine light came on I had it diagnosed immediately…I was told my cam shaft and knock sensors needed replacement, they were replaced. Engine light goes off for 24 hours until it comes back on and once it came back on my car couldn’t go over a certain speed , and it died in the middle of traffic.

This issue has been going on since shortly after purchase and Hyundai says it is a maintenance item and not a warranty or recall. I first informed them in July of 2021. On November 2nd of 2023, I was driving approximately 5 miles away from home when all of a sudden the sunroof glass shattered. It sounded like an explosion of glass. I was driving at 45 miles per hour which is the speed limit in the area. It was very alarming when the sunroof glass shattered, I was nervous and thought that someone threw a rock at the car. I wasn't sure whether to stop the car or keep on driving. Thank GOD there was no traffic, otherwise it would have been a very dangerous situation. I safely pulled over into a gas station to check what had happened. There was nothing other than broken glass on top of the car. The sunroof looks like it had pressure from the bottom up.

Purchased a new car from Plaza Hyundai dealership in Brooklyn NY 5/25/2019, had problems a year later but due to covid, dealership wasn't open. Called Hyundai Consumer affairs May 2020 as I also found out there was an open recall that was supposed to be done with the ecm & cluster update-engine monitoring logic product improvement for Santa Fes from 2011-2019. There was and still is an open recall listed from 08/09/2018 that the car was still at Plaza Hyundai dealership for. In 2020, I was told that a buyback wasn't possible due to there not being any record of active recalls. On September 22, 2021, our car broke down on the highway, with it being the engine issue that is currently on recall. We have an unusable car still being paid for, a car that shouldn't have been sold to us because it was on recall, a car that should've been buyback but wasn't due to greed, and no answers as Hyundai is saying that the buyback period has ended since the first use was February 2018, even though we became owners of the car 5/25/2019. The component that failed was the engine. Its currently in Plaza Hyundai's service lot. Our safety was put at risk not once but twice, but the most recent being 9/21/2021, we were on a major highway at 70mph when the engine started to slow down, smoke, and vibrate violently. The vehicle is currently being serviced for parts, but they don't think its the engine. There were previous issues but I would have to recollect on the memory of when.
