Our 2018 Honda Ridgeline broke a connecting rod, that quickly punched through the engine block. My entire family was left stranded on the side of I-79, at night, in the mountains of West Virginia, in subfreezing temperatures, with no power or heat. It took an hour for a tow truck to reach us (we were in the middle of nowhere) and another hour to get it towed to the nearest Honda dealership. The only warning we had was a slight rattle for about 10 minutes, followed by a POW, immediate and complete loss of engine power, and all the dashboard lights came on simultaneously. The dealership (Urse Honda in Bridgeport WV) confirmed the hole in the side of the engine block, and let me take pictures of the broken rod cap. Ironically, the month before the catastrophic failure, on 11/9/2023 Honda internally released Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) [XXX] that speaks to "internal damage at the connecting rod bearings, possibly leading to engine failure." However I only found out about this TSB AFTER my engine blew up. Furthermore even though this TSB describes exactly the failure I experienced, it ONLY covers 2017 and 2019 Ridgelines, mysteriously skipping over my 2018 Ridgeline. Because of this (for now) Honda is refusing to cover damages to my engine, and also to repair other customers' 2018 Ridgelines before they too catastrophically fail. Even more curious the front 2/3rds of the Ridgelines and Pilots are the same, replacing only the third row Pilot seat with a truck bed in the Ridgelines. Yet the 2018 Pilots ARE covered by this TSB. Honda cannot explain this discrepancy. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The hood flops in the wind, like a 2 foot long piece of aluminum foil. It's because the glue holding the composite skin to the metal frame has come loose. I'm sure over time, the stress from the wind will cause the composite material to break completely from the hood. Honda dealer wanted Honda to repair it, but Honda will only pay 60%, leaving me with a 1100.00 bill. Not acceptable, since it's a manufacturing defect. I now have a brick and a tie down holding it in place, and you know that's really safe. Since we only drove it in town for the first 2 1/2 years (bought it new off the showroom floor) we didn't know it had a problem. Wasn't until we drove it on I-90 at 80mph, that it had a floppy in the wind problem, it just got worse from then on. Honda dealer in Scottsbluff NE was the place that told us it wasn't normal. That's when we tried to get HONDA to fix it.

Rear camera is not working due to frayed and/or disconnected wires. It is a terrible design that that normal tailgate use pinches the wires and eventually they become damaged, severing the connection and disabling the rear camera. It is well known and documented problem by dealers and consumers, that has yet to be recalled. It is a safety issue that needs to be recognized and resolved by Honda.

The Honda Ridgeline 2018 has an issue that it burns its transmission fluid really fast to the point that the Truck's transmission starts to judder. This causes the truck to have issues accelerating or changing gears. This happened to me in a 70 MPH highway, when the problem starts you see the RPM gauge fluctuating a lot and the Truck has issues accelerating. This problem was present on the 2017 version of the truck and Honda issued a service bulletin (https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2018/MC-10139548-9999.pdf) but this bulletin does not cover any other version of the truck when the same exact problem is still happening. I went to the dealership and they confirmed that the Transmission Judder was there. When you go online other owners of the truck are complaining about the same exact problem: Problem happening on a Honda Ridgeline 2019 - https://www.ridgelineownersclub.com/threads/2019-transmission-judder.233046/ Same problem on a Honda Ridgeline 2018 - https://www.ridgelineownersclub.com/threads/2018-honda-ridgeline-rtl-transmission-judder.228917/ Another owner with a Honda Ridgeline 2019 with the same problem - https://www.ridgelineownersclub.com/threads/transmission-shudder-any-solutions-yet.224260/ There are tons of other owners complaining about the same issue. I would like for Honda to fix this issue and refund me all the money the dealership charged me to fix this issue.

While driving the vehicle to the dealership to have them inspect the vehicle for a knocking noise coming from the engine at startup, the engine stalled. The engine locked up and had to be towed approximately 10 miles to the dealership. Upon inspection by the dealership after pulling the oil pan and inspecting for evidence of rod bearing failure, it was confirmed by the shop manager that there was indeed evidence of this in the oil pan.

There was no visible damage to the vehicle and a police report was not filed. Then a few days after the incident, the contact merged onto the highway at 30 MPH and attempted to apply the brakes however, the brake pedal failed operate as needed. The contact stated that the Forward Collision Automatic Emergency Braking System failed to operate as needed and the contact crashed into the vehicle in front of him without warning. The air bags deployed upon impact. There were no injuries reported and no medical attention was required. A police report was filed. Due to the accident, the vehicle was initially towed to an independent mechanic however, the insurance had the vehicle towed to the dealer where it remained in their possession. The contact believed that the incident that occurred a few days prior to the second accident may have contributed to the Forward Collision Automatic Braking System failure. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 28,000.

THE BACKUP CAMERA stopped working. When I did an internet search, "my backup camera does not work", many posts came up. In the tailgate wiring harness, one wire in the bundled wire broke, that wire supplys the camera video. It is a good safety feature to prevent hitting something or someone. Honda will not voluntarily repair it. My tailgate is rarely used. I think the door swing alternate way to open the gate is what cause the stress on the wire and it to fail. My car ar 3 years old just went out of warranty when it failed. About 3 months after the warranty expired. I called the local Honda parts departement, he said they changed the design of the wiring harness in 2019. It is was a known design flaw.

The backup camera has stopped working, at least the imaging part. This makes backing up riskier, especially in parking lots, driveways or where pedestrians may be behind me. I have not been to the dealership yet as it failed today but this seems a common complaint for Ridgeline owners online. I have not had others inspect this problem yet. There was no warning, yesterday worked fine, today it doesn't work. I took a picture of the broken wiring harness at the corner of the tailgate, looks same as what I found online. Truck is a 2018 model with between 70 and 80K miles.

Rear safety camera does not work and can be inspected. Cannot see via camera when backing up. Has not yet been inspected by anyone but myself and no outside party has yet been contacted. There were no warning signs other than black screen when in reverse. Broken wires can be visibly seen at driver's side tailgate hinge point. Appears to be flawed design that does not allow for sharp bending of wires on repeated usage of tailgate.

The backup camera intermittently works. When put in reverse, sometimes I’ll have a black screen with grid lines, other times just a blank screen. Yes, it is available for inspection. I cannot see persons and property when backing up. I am afraid, in reverse, of running over persons shorter than the vehicle that only the backup camera would pick up. This has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or service station. The vehicle has not been inspected by another entity. There has been no warning lights or messages from the vehicle about the issue. I purchased the vehicle in October 2022 and the issue started two weeks after purchase.

My check engine light came on and within minutes there was a loud noise, smoke and my vehicle lost power. I was on Hwy 20 returning to Boise, ID from Bend, OR. Luckily this occurred just as I had cell service since I was without cell service just before this occurred. This happened in the evening on Nov 2, 2025. I had just had it serviced for regularly needed maintenance as recommended by Honda. 10/20/2025 I spent $2274.28 on service at the Honda dealership. Service included transmission service, oil change, strut service, replace front struts, wheel alignment, and resurfaced front rotors. I've had all my regular maintenance handled timely and at the dealership. I was 75 miles from the dealership and had to spend $521 to have it towed to the dealership. My truck lost power so fast after the check engine light leaving me on the side of the hwy 15 miles from the nearest town as the sun set. I waited in the dark for a tow truck. So grateful that I had regained cell service to call for help. The truck is currently at the dealership awaiting resolution. Dealership notes: engine oil leaking all over the engine assembly, used bore scope and inspected behind bank 2 catalytic converter and found a hole in the engine block. Recommend replacement of the short block with new heads or replace the engine. Service department suspects the problem a connecting rod bearing failed. We've had multiple phone and in person discussions regarding the matter as we try to resolve this. There is a recall on the 2017 and 2019, but not the 2018. There is an open probe regarding the 2018. I searched to see if my car was on the recall list for that after experiencing the hood bouncing, but it was not; however, it is concerning. I have not had my truck inspected yet, as I just bought it. There are no lights, messages etc. Should I be concerned or take it in?

Initially the car would not turn on. We were able to start it but then the engine would not turn off. Shop indicated that the Body Control Module is faulty. Honda of Olathe has the component that malfunctioned as of today 11/1/2024. My understanding is that this system controls door locks, windows, lights, turn signal, horn, etc. Malfunction of some of these systems may put my safety or the safety of others at risk. There was a warning message indicating "Keyless Start System Problem".

  • 11/01/2022· VISIBILITY/WIPER

The problem revolves around the rear-view camera failing through the normal use of the vehicle. The issue affects 2017-2018 Ridelines, a number of whose owners complain that the screen goes black when they try to reverse. The complaints suggest that the wiring harness going from the main body of the vehicle into the tailgate, where the camera is located, suffers severe damage caused by the normal opening and closing of the tailgate. In my case I've confirmed this is true. Backup cam suddenly stopped working. Inspected wiring to backup cam at back where tailgate is and confirmed wiring is severed.

  • 10/23/2021· BACK OVER PREVENTION

The wires connected to the rear backup camera in the tailgate have broken due to a design defect, making the camera inoperable. Opening and closing of the two-way tailgate, over time, have worn through the wires. I experienced this problem at roughly 50,000 miles with no unusual or overly frequent use of my tailgate. The electrical connection was designed in such a way that normal use of the tailgate causes the wires to break, which prevents the rear backup camera from functioning. I and many drivers rely on the backup camera, along with other aids such as the rearview mirrors, to prevent collisions with pedestrians, other vehicles and other objects when backing up. The defect is clear from the photo and is well-documented by hundreds of other Honda Ridgeline owners in online posts. I believe a class action suit is being prepared or has already been filed. Honda has refused to acknowledge this problem, though I spoke with a dealer who told me they have experienced many complaints identical to mine.

  • 09/25/2020· FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

IN FREEZING WEATHER I AM UNABLE TO REFUEL MY 2018 RIDGELINE BECAUSE THE FUEL NOZZLE WILL NOT INSERT INTO THE FILLER NECK DUE TO ICE BUILD UP IN THE CAP-LESS FUEL SHUTTER IN THE FILLER NECK. I HAVE CONTACTED AMERICAN HONDA AND MY LOCAL AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS. HONDA HAS REFUSED TO MAKE REPAIRS ON THIS VEHICLE. THIS OCCURS ANYTIME THERE IS MOISTURE IN THE CAP-LESS FUEL FILLER APPARENTLY BECAUSE THE FUEL DOOR DOES NOT KEEP MOISTURE AND WATER OUT. THERE IS NO WAY OF KNOWING WHEN MOISTURE OR WATER IS PRESENT UNTIL IT IS TIME TO REFUEL AND THE CAP-LESS FUEL CAP IS FROZEN SHUT. EVEN WITH A T.S.B. WRITTEN BY AMERICAN HONDA AND RECOGNIZED BY THE N.H.T.S.A. HONDA HAS REFUSED REPAIR AND DEALERSHIP HAS REFUSED TO PROVIDE PRINTED DOCUMENTATION OF THIS PROBLEM. WITHOUT INDOOR (GARAGE) STORAGE HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO MELT ICE BUILD-UP IN THE FUEL FILLER NECK? HONDA RIDGELINE OWNERS NEED RELIEF FROM AMERICAN HONDA.

Wire harness failed due to pinching in tailgate. This resulted in the rear view camera no longer functioning. Due to the camera failure, I can no longer see behind the vehicle when reversing. This has been inspected by the dealership. Although this is a common issue, they declined to repair it. Cost to repair would be $465 + labor.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Rear camera wire harness has failed. When vehicle is in reverse the screen displays a black image. Vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Please see attached image. These wires are visible when the tailgate is open. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The rear camera adds tremendous safety information as I reverse the vehicle. In every situation this information is valuable; more so in a neighborhoods like the one I live in. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No. I will mention it during my next routine service. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No, first signs were the camera would fail sporadically , now almost permanently. Sometimes after opening/closing the tailgate the camera will work until the tailgate is opened again.

The rear camera shows black when shifting into reverse. Upon checking it appears the wire harness that contains the wiring from the camera to the dash is cracked. P/N32109-T6Z-A00. Approximately 40 other vehicles in the 2017-2018 years have experienced the same problem.

After a recent Fuel Injector service last week, there is a strong smell of gasoline both in and out of my vehicle. Honda Service technicians report they cannot find the issue and there are no Codes reported upon diagnostic check. However the smell remains and fuel gage needle falls closer to E when the vehicle is parked a few days.

  • 09/03/2020· VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

THE VEHICLE EXHIBITS AN UNEXPECTED DELAY IN ACCELERATION FROM A STOP. THIS DELAY SEEMS TO BE UNPREDICTABLE AND NOT DUE TO ANY PARTICULAR PEDAL MOVEMENT. AT TIMES, WHEN MOVING FROM A STOP AT AN INTERSECTION, AFTER MOVING INTO A LANE OF TRAFFIC, THE DELAY CAN SUDDENLY HAPPEN, AND CAN BE AS MUCH AS 3 TO 4 SECONDS. AT THIS POINT, THE VEHICLE IS "DEAD IN THE WATER" SO TO SPEAK. THE ENGINE IS AT IDLE AND WILL NOT ACCELERATE, AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT MOVE. HENCE, THE VEHICLE CANNOT BE MOVED OUT OF THE WAY OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC UNTIL THE DELAY PERIOD IS OVER. PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR DOES NO GOOD IN THIS PERIOD OF TIME, AND, IF HOLDING THE ACCELERATOR PARTIALLY PRESSED WHEN THE DELAY PERIOD IS OVER, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY LURCHES FORWARD MORE QUICKLY THAN THE DRIVER WOULD NORMALLY WISH. I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS DELAY AND THE ENSUING "DEAD IN THE WATER" SITUATION WILL EVENTUALLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE TALKED WITH A DEALER SERVICE MANAGER, AND HIS ANSWER WAS THAT IT WAS DUE TO THE "DRIVE BY WIRE" SYSTEM THAT CONTROLS THE THROTTLE, AND THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. THIS INCIDENT FORM REQUIRES A DATE FOR WHEN THIS HAPPENED. IT HAPPENS FREQUENTLY. I BOUGHT THE TRUCK IN JANUARY 2020, AND IT HAS HAPPENED EVERY TIME I DRIVE IT. I'LL GIVE A DATE FOR THE RECORD, BUT IT IS ONLY ONE OF MANY.

Backup camera stopped working. Will sometimes work after the tailgate has been opened and closed. Wiring harness from the tailgate to the truck body is frayed and poorly designed for the fold down and swing feature of the tailgate. Poor sightlines on the truck make backing up using the mirrors challenging and stressful.

The back up camera worked for a few months and all of a sudden stopped. I drove it like that for a month or so hoping it would pop back on but it never did. The fuse wasn't blown and the backup lights worked so I assumed it was getting power. Looking online I saw the posts about the cut wires. Mine were not cut where it usually seemed to be by the swing gate hinge, but it was very pinched. After opening it up I discovered one of the wires had in fact been cut via the pinching. Respliced the wire and the camera came right back on.

Honda recall on fuel pump from February 2024 has not been corrected due to Honda failing to supply part to local dealer for repair. I have concerns of the fuel pump failing while driving and have made multiple calls to Honda asking for the repair. Honda reply is that when the part is available they will notify. Six months is a long time to wait on a defect that could have serious consequence.

My complaint for my 2018 Honda Ridgeline Sport is with Honda's part number 32109-T6Z-A00 which is a wiring harness leading into the tailgate of the vehicle. This harness houses a wiring bundle including the back up camera. I experienced a failure of the camera on August 9, 2021 when the screen was black however the guide bars were still present. I consulted a few online resources and found that Honda is collecting information on this failure where the wire of the camera becomes sheered off and in the process breaks the wire to the camera rendering it blank. I contacted a Honda dealership to get a new harness and and had the repair made on August 31, 2021 only to find that Honda only authorized the same defective part number as the replacement. The 2020 and later models have a different part number with no reported issues, but because my vehicle is a 2018, they installed the same defective harness. The design of the tailgate has not changed since 2017. The back up camera is a vital safety component on my vehicle. I am at a complete loss as to why Honda would replace a faulty part with the same faulty part, other than as a way of charging $360 to get another repair.

From researching this, my Honda 2018 Ridgeline is having a problem with the Keyless Access/TPMS Control Unit, causing the vehicle security alarm to go off when the vehicle is idol which could result in a dead battery if not attended. Honda referenced this manufacturing defect in its Service Bulletin 21-055 dated XXX. I have attached a copy of the Service Bulletin. Since this problem is affecting a number of different Honda models, my question is if this admitted manufacting problem is under consideration for a recall by NHTSA. Honda dealers are changing upwards of $800-$1,000 to replace and program the unit. Thank you. [XXX], [XXX] or [XXX].
