NHTSA has flagged a recall on this vehicle as severe. Contact a dealer immediately; recall repairs are free.

  • STEERING:COLUMNCampaign 16V292000 · 11/05/2016Do not drive

Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Legacy and Outback vehicles manufactured February 29, 2016, to May 6, 2016. The steering column on the affected vehicles may have been improperly machined, and as a result, turning the steering wheel may have no effect on the direction of the wheels.

Risk: The loss of steering ability would increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the lot number on the steering column, replacing the steering column, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 13, 2016. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783 or by visiting http://www.wtd65.service-campaign.com. Subaru's number for this recall is WTD-65. Note: Until the vehicles have been inspected, owners are advised not to drive their vehicles.

  • STEERING:COLUMNCampaign 16V716000 · 06/10/2016

Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2017 Legacy and Outback vehicles manufactured September 21, 2016, to September 23, 2016. In the affected vehicles, the knee guard bracket may not be properly attached to the steering beam assembly.

Risk: If the knee guard is not properly attached and the driver is not wearing a seatbelt, the knee guard may not be able to properly restrain the driver's lower body in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the knee guard welding on each vehicle's steering beam, replacing the beam as necessary, free of charge. The recall began November 14, 2016. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's number for this recall is WTL-72.

I HAVE REVIEWED MULTIPLE THREADS ON THE INTERNET TALKING ABOUT ISSUES WITH THE KEY BEING STUCK IN THE IGNITION AFTER PUTTING THE VEHICLE IN PARK. THEY ALL SUGGESTED CONTACTING SUBARU AMERICA AND THAT THERE WOULD BE A FREE FIX SINCE IT IMPACTS SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE (SEEMS EASY TO STEAL WHEN THE KEY IS STUCK IN THE CAR FOR EXAMPLE). SUBARU DID NOT RESPOND AS ANTICIPATED AND INSTEAD RESPONDED WITH A 'GO TALK TO A DEALER' WHICH ALSO IS QUOTED TO COST HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO FIX A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM. MY FEELING IS THAT THE KEY BEING LITERALLY STUCK IN THE IGNITION COULD LEAD TO THEFT, FURTHER MECHANICAL DAMAGE, AND OTHER RISKS TO THE PERSON. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS IN PARK AND THE CAR CANNOT ACKNOWLEDGE IT IS INDEED IN PARK SO IT RETAINS THE CAR KEY LOCK, NOT RELEASING IT TO THE OWNER.

ON AUGUST 30, I TRAVELED NORTH BOUND ON IH 35 TOWARDS AUSTIN AROUND 6:00PM. AS I APPROACHED MY DESTINATION, I NOTICED A CRACK THAT HAD STARTED IN THE BOTTOM, CENTER OF MY WINDSHIELD. I DIDN'T REMEMBER HEARING ANYTHING HIT MY WINDSHIELD, SO I WAS VERY SURPRISED I HAD A CRACK. I DID HAVE MY WINDSHIELD REPLACED AT SAFELIGHT ON OCTOBER 15, 2019 AND PAID $500 DEDUCTIBLE. I HAVE HAD 3 BROKEN WINDSHIELDS ON MY 2017 SUBARU LEGACY IN THE 20 MONTHS THAT I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE. WHEN IT HAPPENED THIS PAST TIME I REALIZED THIS IS NOT JUST "BAD LUCK" ON MY PART. I STARTED RESEARCHING THE ISSUE ONLINE AND FOUND THAT SUBARU HAS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST THEM FOR 2015 AND 2016. I BELIEVE THE 2017 MODEL IS ALSO AN ISSUE BUT THAT MODEL YEAR HAS YET TO BE INCLUDED IN THE LAWSUIT. WHAT I HAVE ALSO FOUND ONLINE FROM VARIOUS AUTOMOTIVE WEBSITES IS THAT SUBARU LEGACY AND OUTBACK OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING BROKEN WINDSHIELDS FROM THE SMALLEST DEBRIS HITTING THE WINDSHIELD. IF THE SMALLEST PIECE OF DEBRIS IS CAUSING A CRACK IN THE WINDSHIELD WHAT CAN A CONSUMER EXPECT TO HAPPEN IF THERE WAS A FULL COLLISION? I'M NOT SURE IF THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW IN THE AUTOMOBILE OR FAULTY GLASS, OR MAYBE BOTH. I SPOKE WITH MY STATE FARM REPRESENTATIVE AND HE INDICATED HE NEVER HEARD OF A NEW PASSENGER VEHICLE HAVING 3 BROKEN WINDSHIELDS IN A SPAN OF LESS THAN TWO YEARS. IF YOU NEED ANY OTHER INFORMATION FROM ME, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO HELP. THANK YOU.

My 2017 Legacy is on it's 3rd windshield this year. I had impact damage on July 17th, had it replaced the first week of August, and it cracked without impact damage in October. Subaru refused to replace it under warranty and it was replaced through insurance in December. The genuine Subaru replacement windshields for 2015-2019 Legacy and Outback models appear to be defective and this should be investigated.

Car keeps destroying cells in the battery. Car has died multiple times from sitting over night and has gone through 3 batteries in 3 years. Battery terminal has also corroded away. Car has failed to start many time. Seems to to be a battery drain issue with my car. Subaru has acknowledged the problem and reimbursed me for one of my batteries but I feel this isn't enough. I cannot rely on the car because I fear it will leave me stranded.

AND I WENT TO DEALER TWICE TRY TO FIX THIS ISSUE, BUT THEY SAID TSB 12-185-15R CAN ONLY APPLY TO 15-16 YEAR MODELS, NOT FOR 17 YEAR MODEL. BUT THIS IS EXACTLY SAME PROBLEM ON THE EXACT SAME CAR.. Complete Battery drainage started when the car had about 30k miles. Batery was replaced around December 2020 at owners expense. Within a year the baterry drainage started happening again, randomly, after parking. Subaru dealer suggested to keep replacing baterry. Issue has not been reproduced by service department; it randomly happens. It has not been inspected by others.

THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN CONTACTED. THE VIN TOOL DID NOT SHOW ANY RECALLS. THE CONTACT HAD THE DRIVER'S SIDE FENDER AND DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR REPAIRED SINCE THEY WERE DAMAGED DURING THE INCIDENT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 33,000.

Left town for 3 weeks and upon return the battery was dead. This happened the last time the car was not driven for several weeks, in Spring of 2020. A new battery was purchased at that time, even though the original battery was only ~3.5 years old. The current battery is only 2.5 years old and should be able to hold a charge for 3 weeks. Every time the car goes for an extended time without being driven, something in the electrical system drains the battery. Its very frustrating and time consuming to deal with.

No warning lights during drives prior to battery failing to start car. Most recent failure was in September, 2021.

WINDSHEILD- THE MATERIALS USED FOR THE WINDSHIELD IN THIS VEHICLE ARE SUBSTANDARD. I LEASED THE VEHICLE ON 4/18/2017 AND IT IS NOW 10/24/2017 AND MY WINDSHEILD HAS CRACKED TWICE. THE FIRST TIME IT CRACKED I HAD IT REPLACED RIGHT AWAY. THIS TIME I DECIDED TO WAIT A WEEK OR SO TO SEE IF IT WOULD CONTINUE TO HAVE ISSUES THE WINDSHIELD HAS NOW CRACKED IN THREE DIFFERENT PLACES. I HAVE NOT CHANGED MY DRIVING HABITS AND MY PREVIOUS VEHICLES HAVE NEVER HAD THIS ISSUE. I DID SOME ONLINE RESEARCH AND SPOKE TO SOME OTHER SUBARU OWNERS AND THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH NEWER OUTBACKS AND LEGACY MODELS. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE FOR SUBARU TO SELL THESE OBVIOUSLY FAULTY WINDSHIELDS TO THE PUBLIC I HAVE MADE COMPLAINTS TO THE SUBARU DEALER AND I JUST GET THE RESPONSE THAT THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO EXCEPT REPLACE THE WINDSHIELD AT FULL RETAIL COST.

WHEN I GO TO PARK MY 2017 SUBARU LEGACY, I PUT MY CAR IN PARK AND THE KEY WILL NOT TURN. IT GETS STUCK AND THE ENGINE WILL NOT TURN OFF. CONSEQUENTLY, I AM NOT ABLE TO TURN OFF MY CAR AND TAKE MY KEY OUT. THE DEALER TOLD ME TO BACK UP MY CAR AND THRUST MY GEAR SHIFTER INTO PARK. THEN I WAS ABLE TO TURN THE KEY OFF. HOWEVER, THE SITUATION CONTINUES TO HAPPEN EVERY TIME THAT I DRIVE THE CAR. IT IS CLEARLY AN ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE/CAR AS THIS NEVER HAPPENED PRIOR. I WAS TOLD THAT SUBARU'S FREQUENTLY HAVE DEFECTIVE SOLENOIDS THAT HOLDS THE KEY IN WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING MIGHT BE DEFECTIVE. I HAVE NOT YET SEEN A RECALL.

Battery went dead had it charged - went dead shortly after. Replaced battery and within a year of replacing with a brand new battery it is dead again. Car was on side of the road where I parked it. There is a Class action suit on the battery life but if we need to keep doing this every year or so that is a problem. Called the dealer to see if there is anything they can do to alleviate the problem and they really have no answer. First battery lasted about 2-3 years Second battery lasted about a year and will probably go two with several jump starts along the way as was the case with the first.

The windshield formed a crack towards the bottom of the passenger side and was about 3-5inches to start. Over time, the crack grew to approximately over 1ft. Later on, another crack began forming on the drivers side of the windshield, also starting at only a few inches, and now has grown into almost 1ft long. Am in process of looking to have it repaired, but have not set a date yet. Having a cracked windshield is an overall safety risk any time you drive the car due to it's ability to impact visibility as it grows/becomes worse. The windshield has not yet been inspected by: manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, but has been seen during State Inspection. There were no warnings/messages/symptoms before seeing the crack - They first appeared a day or two after I had recently had my car's oil changed at an autobody shop. My friend noticed it when sitting in the car when we got in at my driveway. There are no signs of malicious or accidental damage present where the crack begins, and no signs of a dent from a rock chipping the windshield.

Unexplained battery drain on my 2017 Subaru Legacy. Had to jump the vehicle on two different occasions. Brought the vehicle to the dealer and was told I needed a new battery. BOUGHT THIS CAR IN THE MIDDLE OF JUNE AS BARELY DRIVEN, FOR A VERY GOOD PRICE. ALTHOUGH THE CAR HAD A 2 MONTH OLD BATTERY, THE CAR BATTERY WAS COMPLETELY DEAD WHEN I TRIED TO CRANK IT FOR A TEST DRIVE. THEY JUMPED IT AND THE TEST DRIVE THE BATTERY WAS CHARGED UP. I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE EVERY DAY SO I NEVER HAD A PROBLEM UNTIL NOW, WHEN THE KIDS SCHOOL STARTED AND MY CAR WAS PARKED FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS WITHOUT STARTING IT. MY WIFE WENT TO THE STORE AND SHE COULD NOT COME BACK, I HAD TO GIVE HER A JUMP. CAME BACK FROM THE STORE AND AGAIN, NOT ENOUGH TO CRANK THE ENGINE UP. AFTER I WENT TO A COUPLE OF SUBARU FORUMS, I FOUND OUT THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE. THEN I FOUND OUT THERE IS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN THAT INCLUDES MY VEHICLE "POTENTIAL BATTERY DISCHARGE (DEAD BATTERY) AFTER REPEATED PERIODS OF SHORT-TRIP DRIVING.".

TWO WEEK OLD VEHICLE WITH 980 MILES. THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED SINCE DELIVERY. THE BRAKES ARE SOFT AND GO ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WITH NO FURTHER PEDAL TRAVEL AFTER COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. THIS IS REPEATABLE AND OCCURS EVERY TIME YOU COME TO A COMPLETE STOP AT A LIGHT OR STOP SIGN AND MAINTAIN THE PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE PEDAL WILL SLOWLY SINK TO THE FLOOR IF PRESSURE IS MAINTAINED. SUBARU OF AMERICA IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND IS UNABLE TO FIX PROBLEM AT THIS TIME. THEY HAVE ASSIGNED A CASE NUMBER TO MY ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE AND ARE WORKING ON IT. THIS ISSUE APPARENTLY AFFECTS OTHER 2017 SUBARU VEHICLES. ONE DEALER TECHNICIAN, AFTER VERBALLY STATING THEY FELT WHAT I FELT WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL, FOUND THAT OTHER 2017S DID THE SAME THING SO WROTE "NO PROBLEM FOUND" ON THE WORK ORDER. ANOTHER SUBARU DEALER ALSO WITNESSED THE PROBLEM AND WROTE ON THE WORK ORDER THAT THE BRAKES FELT NORMAL UNTIL COMING TO A FULL STOP AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. THEY THEN STATED TWO OTHER 2017S ON THE LOT DID THE SAME THING. I CONSIDER THIS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE.

THE KEY GETS STUCK IN THE IGNITION OF MY 2017 SUBARU LEGACY. I START THE CAR AGAIN, I TWIST THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT AND RIGHT, AND THE KEY STILL DOES NOT COME OUT. MY CAR WAS PARKED EVERY TIME THIS OCCURRED. SO I GOOGLED THE ISSUE AND THERE WERE A TON OF VIDEOS AND FORUMS DISCUSSING THIS EXACT ISSUE! APPARENTLY THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AT SUBARU. BECAUSE OF ALL THE COMPLAINTS, SUBARU FIXED THE ISSUE STARTING WITH THEIR 2018 MODELS. SUBARU RELEASED A SERVICE BULLETIN DATED 3/15/18 WITH THE SUBJECT LINE: "IGNITION KEY STICKING / DESIGN CHANGE TO CVT SHIFTER / SELECTOR LEVER COMPONENTS". THAT IS MY EXACT PROBLEM! I PURCHASED THE LEGACY USED IN 2020 AND IT IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THE DEALERSHIP GAVE US A QUOTE OF $512.92 TO FIX THE "SHIFTER ASSEMBLY". WE ARE DISGUSTED THAT SUBARU WILL NOT COVER THIS COST, AS IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE. I'VE OWNED MANY CARS IN MY LIFE AND I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A KEY GETTING STUCK IN A 3 YEAR OLD CAR! THIS IS AN ISSUE WITH THE MANUFACTURING, YET THEY DID NOT ISSUE A RECALL. IT LOOKS LIKE WE ARE GOING TO NEED A NEW "SELECT LEVER ASSEMBLY" AND SUBARU IS TOO CHEAP TO PAY FOR THIS FIX.... AN ISSUE I DID NOT CAUSE!

Jan 2021 my battery died. So I called AAA and they were able to replace it. Then last year I received a notice of a problem with batteries. I submitted a claim with the SUBARU BATTERY SETTLEMENT. I submitted my receipts. They denied my claim stating that I did not use a Subaru authorized dealer AND that I did not notify Subaru 10 days PRIOR to the new battery. I am at a loss to understand how this Settlement is working. I did not anticipate the battery dying. I needed to be able to drive, so I called AAA who I think is generally reputable. Do people actually call the car manufacturer and wait 10 days to put in a new battery? This is a joke. I appealed and they denied it twice. How can this be??

ON THE 2ND DAY OF OUR TRIP THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON CONSTANTLY & WE WERE NOT UNABLE TO USE OUR CRUISE CONTROL. WE HAD THE CAR DIAGNOSED & REPAIRED IN RAPID CITY, SD. AT COURTESY SUBARU. IT WAS DIAGNOSED AS A WIRING HARNESS. IT WOULD TAKE 1500 HOURS TO REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS TORN COMPLETELY APART. I HAVE ATTACHED PHOTOS. WHAT HAPPENS IF 1 YEAR, OR ANYTIME IN THE FUTURE THE VEHICLE'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FAILS OR WORSE CATCHES FIRE? I CONTACTED SUBARU REQUESTING A BUY OUT OR TRADE IN OPTION. THEY HAVE REFUSED ONLY TO OFFER A 5 YEAR, 60,000 MILE WARRANTY. I DO NOT WANT THE VEHICLE & WILL SELL IT SO I ASKED THE DEALERSHIP IF RUNNING A CARFAX WOULD SHOW THE WIRING ISSUE & THEY SAID YES. THAT INFORMATION WILL LESSEN THE VALUE OF THE VEHICLE AS A TRADE IN BUT I WILL NOT SELL THIS VEHICLE TO A PRIVATE PARTY WITH THE ISSUES AND I WILL NOT KEEP IT KNOWING THAT SOMETHING ELSE COULD GO AWRY. I ONLY WANT TO BE TREATED FAIRLY BUT SUBARU WILL ONLY SAY THAT THE VEHICLE DOES NOT QUALIFY UNDER THE LEMON LAW AND REFUSES ANY REMEDIES EXCEPT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. On May 16, 2023 I was driving a friend home. We were stopped at a red light and felt an impact. My friend said, "You've been hit." I went out to check. No one had hit the car. It had lurched forward while my foot was on the brake. On 6/1/23 I pulled out of a driveway, car was in drive, foot on brake, paused to set GPS, car lurched forward. I brought to the dealer. They said they drove it for seven miles and could not duplicate the problem. About a year prior, the car had also lurched, but at that time I was in drive doing approx 30 mph, and I used the brake to slow it back to my speed. At that time the dealer found some leak in the transmission and, I believe, changed a gasket. These problems are intermittent and did not register on the car's computer, according to the dealer. Have you had any such complaint? Is my car safe?

The manager however is trying to state now that it’s a normal noise and they won’t warranty the repairs anymore. It continues to get worse and louder and feels unsafe to have defective steering racks on the roadways that are non repairable. I’ve reached out to corporate Subaru as well and they can only make decisions based off info the manager gives them which is opposite of what the technicians state. Please help me this car is unsafe.

WHEN THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE IS ABOVE 88F AND THE "AUTO" CLIMATE CONTROL IS SET TO 68C THE DIFFERENCE IN THE TEMPERATURE BETWEEN THE OUTSIDE AIR, AND THE COOLING INSIDE AIR DRAMATICALLY INCREASES THE WEAKNESS AND BRITTLENESS OF THE WINDSHEILD, SUCH THAT WHEN SOMETHING HITS IT, IT ALMOST INSTANTANEOUSLY CRACKS MORE THAN 7-8 INCHES IN LENGTH. I AM NIW HAVING MY SECOND WINDSHEILD REPLACED IN THE LAST 2 MONTHS BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE. BOTH TIMES I WAS DOING ABOUT 70MI/HR ON I-94...I KNOW WINDSHEILDS CRACK WHEN SOMETHING HITS THEM, BUT THIS WAS DIFFERENT THE STRIKE WAS BARELY NOTICEABLE, SOMETHING THAT IF CONDITIONS WERE COOLER OR THE TEMPERATURE EQUALIZED, I DONT THINK THE THERMODYNAMICS WOULD BE RIGHT FOR. THANKS, CHRIS
