- AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULECampaign 16V956000 · 30/12/2016
Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2017 Hyundai Elantra vehicles manufactured April 15, 2016, to September 13, 2016, and Sonata vehicles manufactured May 27, 2016 to September 16, 2016. In these vehicles, the end seal for the driver's frontal air bag inflator may not have been properly installed, possibly resulting in reduced inflation of the frontal air bag in the event of a crash.
Risk: In the event of a crash, an air bag that does not inflate fully increases the risk of injury.
Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag module, free of charge. The recall began February 13, 2017. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 156.
- EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TURN SIGNALCampaign 21V749000 · 24/09/2021
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Sonata, 2016-2017 Sonata Hybrid, and Sonata Plug-In Hybrid vehicles. The Smart Junction Box (SJB) software logic may not properly interpret the signals received from the multifunction switch, which could cause the turn signal to activate in the opposite direction of what the driver intended.
Risk: A turn signal that activates in the opposite direction of what was intended by the driver increases the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will update the SJB software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 19, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 210.
- LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:TRUNK LID:LATCHCampaign 21V619000 · 06/08/2021
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Sonata, 2016-2018 Sonata Hybrid, 2018-2020 Accent, and 2016-2017 Azera vehicles. The trunk latch may become damaged, preventing the opening of the trunk from the inside. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 401, "Internal Trunk Release."
Risk: A person inside the trunk compartment may become trapped, increasing their risk of injury.
Fix: Dealers will replace the trunk latch base, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 4, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 208.

The car's paint is peeling all over. The roof was repainted in 2018, the hood and side door in 2024 and now the the roof supports on each side and trunk are peeling . While driving a big piece of white paint flew to my windshield blocking the driver's view. It stuck under the wipers when used to remove it. Hyundai is aware and has recalled the paint but delays fix and then fixes in tiny areas so that you have to continue coming back for repainting. Now they do not want to pay for repairs stating the recall expired. It expired because of their delay and not painting the entire car. Hyundai should paint the entire car when there is a paint defect.

Problem 1: I made a right turn at a red light. As I turned my power steering light turned on and my steering wheel locked up and I lost control of the vehicle. After stopping and turning off the vehicle, I restarted it. At this point I was able to regain control of the car. A few days later the same thing happened again as I made a right turn from a parking lot into the flow of traffic. One again I stopped the engine and restarted the car, then I regained control of the car. Problem 2 (May be related): My passenger side headlight was replaced a year ago. Recently the light went out again. I took the car in to a mechanic to repair it. It was repaired so I thought. Two days later the light went out again. The mechanic believes their may be an electrical issue. Problem 3 (May be related): My driver side brake light was replaced about a year ago as well. It has now gone out again. I have had my vehicle serviced twice by a Hyundai dealership at least twice since the first incident.
- 12/29/2025· ENGINEFire
My 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport Limited 2.4 has a known engine defect causing excessive oil consumption. The vehicle was at an authorized Hyundai dealership for the oil consumption test and had been approved for a new engine replacement. Prior to the repair, I completed $2,300 in maintenance, specifically an oil combustion cleaning and spark plug replacement, which the dealership said was required to perform the oil consumption test. While the vehicle was in the dealership’s custody, it caught fire on 12/19/2025 at World Hyundai Matteson. No one was injured, but the car was destroyed. This occurred while the vehicle was under warranty repair, creating a serious safety risk. I am submitting this complaint to document the fire and the associated safety issue with this engine defect.

In winter of 2018, my husband and I purchased a certified pre-owned 2017 Hyundai Sonata, and from the moment we drove it off the lot, it had an oil consumption problem. Then, in 2023, the spark plugs began failing. Each time this happens, the whole car shakes and stops running. We found out that Hyundai and Kia engines from 2009-2022 have major problems and that there are many class-action lawsuits against the manufacturer. We contacted both the dealer and Hyundai corporate to find out how we could fix the engine. We have small children and just wanted to repair our family car. The dealer refuses to fix it. They told us that it's Hyundai's problem. Hyundai acknowledged that we are eligible for a new engine but that until a certain rod fails and the whole engine implodes, they can't do anything about it. We have this in an email from corporate. We recently welcomed a new baby and had to buy another car because we felt this Sonata was not a safe choice to drive our children around. The solution to this problem should not be driving around in an unsafe car until it completely stops working. I'm hoping that the NHTSA can help me by sending out an inspector who can attest that this is a safety issue.

WHILE I WAS DRIVING I HAD COME TO A STOP AT THE STOP LIGHT. WHEN IT TURNED GREEN I BEGAN TO MAKE A LEFT TURN. HALFWAY THROUGH THE TURN AT A FEW MILES AN HOUR MY ENGINE LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS CAME ON. AT THE SAME TIME THE ENGINE BEGAN TO REV TO ABOUT 4500 RPM. IT DIED DOWN QUICKLY. I THEN HAD NO RESPONSE FROM THE ACCELERATOR. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AS I HAD JUST ENTERED A TOWN. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND ATTEMPTED TO RESTART IT. IT WOULD NOT RESTART UNTIL ABOUT 15 MINUTES LATER. THE SHIFTER BECAME LOCKED IN THE PARKING POSITION AND EVEN AFTER USING THE SHIFT RELEASE BUTTON I WAS STILL UNABLE TO MOVE THE VEHICLE. LUCKILY AGAIN I HAD JUST ENTERED A TOWN BUT A FEW MILES BEFORE THAT I WAS ON COUNTRY ROADS WHERE THERE WAS NO CELL PHONE SIGNAL AT ALL. I WOULD HAVE BEEN OUT OF LUCK AS WELL AS THE PASSENGER WITH ME. AFTER AN HOUR AND A HALF OF WAITING THE TOW VEHICLE CAME AND WAS ABLE TO GET IT HOME AND THEN ONCE AGAIN TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP I HAD BOUGHT IT FROM. IT HAS NOW BEEN SITTING THERE FOR 5 DAYS AND HAVE BEEN TOLD REPEATEDLY NOW THAT NO ONE UNDERSTANDS WHAT IS WRONG AND HAVE HAD TO GET A SPECIALIST TO COME IN TO TAKE A LOOK AT IT. THIS IS A CAR THAT I HAVE ONLY OWNED FOR 3 WEEKS AND BOUGHT OUTRIGHT WITH ONLY 44 MILES ON IT. IT NOW HAS MAYBE 350. *TR

Ever since I have had my car there has been a wind sound like some this is dragging under my car! Been to dealership multiple times and they tell me that’s how these cars sound! Now oil is disappearing right after and oil change! They say my oil pan bolts were stripped out! Well the Hyundai dealership is the only people that have done my oil changes! Tried to charge me for that! I get an engine diagnosis check done and they tell me nothing is wrong with my car! Before I could make it home engine light was on! Took it back now they saying engine manifold! Want to charge me for that! Now car won’t go over 20 mph! White car paint has chipped from the front roof and hood of car! Driving I see multiple white vehicles with paint chipped in the same areas of the vehicle! Call corporate they know about the the issue. They want to spot paint the car! If you spot paint it doesn’t fix the growing areas of peel up! There is no reason a 2017 and newer models should have huge metal spots for paint peeling already! Only on white Hyundai Sonatas mainly! I have called corporate about every issue with my car and they seem to not care!

THE SHADOW APPEARS TO LOOK LIKE A TAB AND CASTS A SHADOW ON THE LEFT HAND LANE LINE THAT MAKES VISIBILITY HARD AND IS A SAFETY CONCERN. WE HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT WE TOOK IT TO THAT ORDERED A REPLACEMENT HEADLIGHT UNIT THAT IT APPEARS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH THE DESIGN THAT ONLY APPEARS TO IMPACT TO THE LIMITED MODELS OF THE SONATA. UPON FURTHER RESEARCH, THERE ARE A NUMBER OF OTHER COMPLAINTS THAT ARE REFERENCED IN THE WEBSITE HTTPS://WWW.CARGURUS.COM/CARS/DISCUSSION-T68982_DS813530 REGARDING ISSUES WITH BOTH THE 2017 AND 2018 MODELS. I HAVE ATTACHED A FEW PICTURES TO DEMONSTRATE THE DISTRACTION CAUSED BY THE TAB ON A FREEWAY AND IN A RESIDENTIAL STREET AS WELL AS A CLOSE UP OF THE HEADLIGHT WHICH YOU CAN SEE IS CASTING THIS SHADOW. I HAVE ALSO SHOWN A PICTURE THAT IS CAST ON THE FRONT OF A HOUSE THAT WHILE PROJECTED UP (AS WE WERE ON THE UPSLOPE OF A DRIVEWAY), VISIBLY SHOWS THE TAB THAT GETS DISPERSED WHILE ON THE ROADS.

On February 27, 2023 we went to the Hyundai Dealer because our engine was leaking oil and we were told by Pep Boys that the Rear Main Seal was leaking. The Dealership scheduled us a service appointment three wks later, on March 23, 2023, when they replaced the valve cover gasket and the high pressure fuel pump gasket. On Jul 15, 2023, 2.5 months later, we return to dealership because our engine was leaking oil again and had leaked into the spark plugs tubes. They replaced the valve cover gasket again. Two weeks later on July 28, 2023, we went to the Dealership because the engine light turned on and the engine was misfiring while driving. They did nothing but added 3 quarts of oil because our oil was low despite us changing our oil 1 month prior (June 28, 2023). On September 25th, we returned to the dealership because our engine light turned on and our engine was violently shaking while making noise. At this point, we were frustrated and did not feel safe driving the car. We pleaded with the Service Manager to replace the engine from all the issues we have been experiencing including having to constantly add oil or change oil every 2.5 months. They held on to our car for 1 wk and gave us a rental. After inspecting our vehicle they replied that there was no engine issue detected so the Manufacturer will not replace the engine under the warranty. They only replaced the spark plugs and charged us with the service, parts & rental costs. It is now Monday, Dec 18, 2023, 1 wk before Christmas, and our engine light turned on once again while driving with our toddler in the vehicle. The engine not only misfired but did not allow us to accelerate beyond 30mph during high traffic hours on a road with a 50mph limit. The next service appointment available is 10 dys away, Dec 28, 2023, and they are asking us ~$400 to service the car. We feel helpless with the dealership/manufacturer, they are refusing to replace the engine. We fear that they are waiting for the warranty to expire.

Manufacturer Recall Number 209 NHTSA Recall Number 21V727000 Incident date: June 15, 2021 While driving on the freeway at approximately 65 MPH, the vehicle stalled with the check engine warning light flashing on the instrument panel, oil could be seen spraying out the back of the car onto traffic which put other drivers/vehicles at risk of an accident. We pulled over into a dirt parking lot, noticed a puddle of oil underneath the car, and then lifted the hood to see oil sprayed all over the engine compartment. I had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic where the vehicle was diagnosed with engine failure. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer where it remains in their possession as of today which in my opinion is too long to wait without a car, 6 months later from the incident. The manufacturer was notified of the failure June 16th and they informed me that the vehicle did not qualify for any recalls or warranty programs. The vehicle VIN later showed up on the recall campaign in September. Hyundai USA offered to replace the engine at no cost which I am thankful for that so far. However, after the engine replacement, I was told the car would not start, and will require a new battery module and hybrid battery, and that I must pay 40% of the parts and labor at $2776. I believe these parts suddenly failing are directly related to the engine failure incident, and should be part of the recall campaign. My car has yet to be repaired due to backordered parts. I've submitted rental car fee receipts of over $3500 to date without reimbursement because I'm told that it is their policy to only review rental receipts for reimbursement after the repair ticket is closed, with no possibility of interim reimbursement. The Hyundai case manager has told me there is nothing more that they can do, not willing to discuss with another department or Manager, no escalation path forward, and that all I can do is file this complaint with the NHTSA per the recall campaign notification.

After taking it to the dealer I was told I would need to replace the whole engine. I have proof of proper care done on the car but since I am second owner it is not covered in the original warranty. My car could have stalled and resulted in me and my family injured at the least. Hyundai knows about these issues and needs to recall the engines.

My car is blowing a large amount of white smoke due to the head gasket being cracked, I was quoted 2 grand to fix it. The car is not old enough to need a new head gasket, this is completely due to how the car manufactured and I have seen many other reports of this, there should be a recall and this should be fixed free of charge.

I am reporting a serious safety defect involving a vehicle purchased from [XXX] on [XXX]. The vehicle was later involved in a collision that resulted in a total loss. According to the police report, I was not at fault. During this crash, none of the airbags deployed, which indicates a possible defect or prior undisclosed issue with the airbag system. The vehicle was sold with a warranty and was represented as safe and road-ready. The dealership also provided and managed the full-coverage insurance policy. However, the total-loss claim has been delayed and obstructed, and the dealership has not taken responsibility for ensuring the vehicle’s safety or functionality. There is significant concern regarding the condition of the vehicle prior to sale. Records show that Byrider cleared the vehicle’s computer on July 16, 2025, less than a month before purchase. This may have erased important diagnostic information, including any prior airbag-system faults. Clearing the computer in this manner raises questions about whether a known issue was hidden or whether mandatory diagnostic data was removed before the sale. At the time of purchase, I signed an airbag disclosure form in which Byrider stated: •They had “no knowledge of any reason why the airbag system would not operate properly,” and •They “cannot guarantee that the airbag system will deploy in the event of an accident.” Despite this disclosure, the fact that the airbags did not deploy in a crash severe enough to total the vehicle suggests a significant safety defect, potential misrepresentation, or a failure to comply with federal safety requirements. Airbag non-deployment in a total-loss collision indicates a system failure that poses a serious risk to consumers. The vehicle has twice been disabled while driving due to “lost communication with hybrid module powertrain control module.” This breakdown is a significant safety hazard as the car loses power and coasts to a stop without any warning. The second time was on a 65 mph highway. Neither time has had any warning before the malfunction lights appeared. The first time occurred on 10/7, and the vehicle was towed to the dealership. Nothing was done besides clearing the trouble codes and test driving with the car, which returned at the end of October—the second time the breakdown occurred about a month later on 12/3. This second time, I removed the code myself on the roadside so as not to be in more danger, and I am currently awaiting an update from the dealership’s service department on their next steps after initially being told to just have it towed in again. Losing power without notice is incredibly concerning. I want to report this safety issue and determine my next steps to resolve it, as this has dramatically impacted my trust in the vehicle and its safety.
