  • ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRINGCampaign 16V888000 · 09/12/2016

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2017 Ridgeline AWD vehicles manufactured April 1, 2016, to August 11, 2016. Water may enter the rear wiring harness through the connector located under the truck bed drain hole, possibly causing the connection terminals to corrode.

Also had at Honda for oil and filter change a month ago, they also were supposed to have completed the tailgate harness but told me it had be previously complied with but never took it off the list of open recalls. 2017 Honda Rideline RTL-T with 46,464 miles on the odometer. While on a trip totaling approximately 550 miles, after travelling approximately 350 miles we stopped to refuel. The Truck after fueling was hard to start and would lose power at 35-40 mph and would not accelerate. Check Engine light was on plus Various Dash Caution lights (ABS, SRS, EPS, AWD, VSA, Hill Traction, etc) I used an ODB 2 code reader and read P0087 Fuel Rail/System Too Low. I was able to take back roads driving approximately 8 miles at 20 mph to safely arrive at closest Honda Dealership in Abilene. The service advisor there told us it could not be diagnosed that day and the service department do not stock parts. We rented a vehicle and continued our journey. If the truck broke while we were on I-20 Freeway while traffic was passing us at 80 mph, we could have easily been in a serious accident. The service advisor called 1 day later with diagnosis of failed High Pressure Fuel Pump, with replacement part not expected until 4 days later (includes 2 weekend days) when it could be installed. The truck was repaired on the estimated day and we were able to drive 350 miles back home with no other issues. Strange thing was on the dealer invoice they noted that code they retrieved was P0088 Fuel/Rail System Pressure Too High

2 WEEKS AGO MULTIPLE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON WHEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE (POWER STEERING, VEHICLE STABILITY ASSIST, HILL START ASSIST, TRAILER STABILITY ASSIST, EMISSION CONTROL, ETC.). AT THE SAME TIME THE VEHICLE'S PERFORMANCE BECAME SLUGGISH. ACCELERATION, SHIFTING AND BRAKING WERE ALL EFFECTED. THE NEXT DAY THE LIGHTS WERE OFF, ONLY TO REAPPEAR WITH ALL ISSUES THE DAY AFTER. I DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY TO 'RESET', AND THAT WORKED FOR 1 DAY. I THEN REPLACED THE BATTERY WITH THE SAME RESULT. NOW THE PROBLEM HAPPENS EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE IS STARTED. ALL WARNINGS SHOW UP BEFORE THE VEHICLE IS MOVING.

OUR 2017 HONDA RIDGELINE HAS HAD AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM EVER SINCE WE BOUGHT IT IN 2018. THE ENGINE LIGHT GOES ON WHEN DRIVING, ALL SYSTEMS BLINK ESPECIALLY THE EMISSIONS LIGHT AND WARNINGS. THE HORN HONKS UNTIL I CLICK THE UNLOCK BUTTON AND THEN IT HONKS AGAIN. WHEN WE TOOK IT IN TO HONDA SERVICE AND IT WAS NOT BLINKING AND THEY SAID IT HAD TO HAVE THE BLINKING GOING OFF TO KNOW THE PROBLEM AND TO BRING IT BACK. WE TOOK IT SOMEWHERE ELSE AND THEY SAID THE INJECTOR 2 WAS BAD.

  • 12/23/2024· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The Stop/Start button does not start or stop the engine when pushed. Honda has an "extended warranty" but will only honor the warranty "if a code has been set" regardless of the error messages displayed on the dash or the failure of the button to function While an extended warranty is of some value, in my opinion, the failure of the "Stop" button to stop the engine immediately when required (which happens frequently) creates a safety hazard and should result in a recall rather than simply an extended warranty, which has limitations of time and mileage in addition to the "circumstances" (i.e. the "trouble code must be present")

  • 12/22/2021· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The contact's wife owns a 2017 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated that the AWD and battery fan warning lights were illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact took the vehicle to a dealer where he was informed that the alternator needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and informed him that there were no recalls on his wife's vehicle. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V888000 (Electrical System) which he linked to the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

  • 12/21/2023· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

My 2017 Ridgeline had clicking noises in the dash and the interior lights were flickering, truck was in the garage at home. I was able to start the truck and move it outside. I was afraid it may be a short and start a fire. Upon turning off truck it started making the noises again and interior lights flickering. I took it to Honda the next day and after two days they claimed they couldn't figure it out but charged me to disconnect my after market amp and labor for diagnostic. Two days later the issue persisted. I called Honda again and brought it in, this time there was a code to read. The code was "keyless start system problem" so they ordered the module to fix it but explained that it was on backorder and there was no ETA on when I'd get the part. A few weeks later I was stranded at work because my truck had been trying to go into accessory mode all day with the horn blowing. This problem is very intermittent but if left it will drain the battery. It seems to be every 2-3 days that the problem happens.

  • 12/20/2024· ENGINE

Connecting rod bearing on the #6 cylinder...after the injectors failed and the vehicle was barely drivable the Honda mechanic heard a knocking in the motor which was confirmed when I agreed to pay $700 for them to tear it down to look. Mechanic confirmed issue which is EXACTLY same issue as the recall for other 2017 Ridgelines. I am somewhat lucky as I had purchased an extended warranty but it will still cost me over $700 to get a used motor. The insurance company confirmed issue. There were no warning lights or anything that came on prior to the injectors failing. Could have been a major issue as mechanic said it was just a matter of time before motor completely blew up.

Vehicle was taken to Nissan North, 8645 North High Street, Worthington, OH 43065, (614) 436-2768 ("Shop"). Shop diagnosed the internal engine noise as "connecting rod knock". Engine then seized up while in the possession of Shop. Engine was required to be replaced. See attached Nissan North invoice. Prior to the above described incident, vehicle owner had not experienced problems or symptoms with the involved engine. Owner has become aware that the engines in 2017 Honda Ridgelines are now the subject of an NHTSA safety investigation.

Complete engine failure at approximately 107K miles. Honda Corp denied warranty consideration. I paid to have Honda dealership replace engine. Subsequently Honda issued recall notice referring to the engine failure with description similar to the repairs listed on the Honda invoice I paid. I believe the recall notice is 23V-751. I called Honda after the recall and they stated that my VIN was not included in that recall. I believe I paid to have the repairs completed instead of Honda honoring the recall.

  • 12/08/2025· ENGINE

I was driving on the highway when there was a sudden drop in power, accompanied by a flashing engine light. I was unable to proceed at normal highway speeds and was worried about a complete loss of power. I was able to coast/stay in a low gear to get off the highway and find a safe place to park the vehicle. Shortly after parking, the engine stopped and would not engage on attempts to restart. It was hauled to the local Honda Dealer who confirmed that the engine was completely seized and would need to be replaced. They have not disassembled it yet to confirm the precise failure point. Prior to the loss of power, there appeared to be some light, intermittent clicking sounds that I was trying to localize, but appeared to be coming from the front of the vehicle. This lasted for several miles. At the time of the decrease in power, this was accompanied by increased noise/knocking form the engine area. On stopping the vehicle was noted to be idling very rough. This vehicle experienced a failed torque converter around 2021 that Honda eventually had to extend their warranty to cover. In 2023, it had issues with misfiring fuel injectors which was also subject to an extended warranty by Honda to repair. Due to parts shortages, Honda was unable to fix the fuel injectors for over 8 months. This vehicle would be available for inspection on request.

  • 12/05/2025· FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

All the warning lights came on. I took the vehicle to the dealer for diagnosis. They told me that the problem was the fuel injectors. The vehicle only has 40,000 miles. They said there was a factory problem with the programming in the ECU and they are aware of the problem. They have issued an extended warranty for this. They now refuse to honor the warranty because my title is a salvage title. A salvage title has nothing to do with their faulty programming. They now want to charge me $1,300.00 to have them fix it. The vehicle is at the dealer now waiting for a remedy 12/5/2025. I think this could be dangerous if it is not repaired. The engine could stall or fail while on the road.

  • 12/05/2023· POWER TRAIN

I was driving and without any warning or indication that anything was wrong, I heard a loud clunk noise and immediately lost power to the wheels, but the engine continued running. I was barely able to get the vehicle to the shoulder before it came to a complete stop without me applying the brakes. A Police Officer came to assist and tried to push it, but even after shifting to neutral, the car would not move. The tow company had to drag it onto the flatbed because the front passenger wheel would not turn. The Honda Service Center indicated that the axle separated from the transmission. They are in the process of making repairs. While waiting for the tow truck, my car had to sit in a busy highway on ramp turn lane, nearly getting hit several times despite my hazard lights. Had this happened at a higher speed, busier road, or the highway, it could have been extremely dangerous to me and the cars around me. There were no warnings, messages, or other symptoms prior to the incident.

  • 12/02/2023· ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Was driving on 2 lane highway when truck suddenly decelerated, started shuddering, so I pulled to side of road. Dash lights started cycling through warning lights, ultimately settled on saying it was an emission system problem. Car would not accelerate beyond 30-35 miles an hour after that and would even then suddenly lose power then regain it. But still could not get above 30 or 35 miles an hour. Luckily, no one was behind when this happened and I was able to pull to the side of the road. Normally this is a 55-60 mile an hour busy 2 lane highway. And I was less than a mile from home so was able to limp home. The next morning, tried to drive to the dealer, and had to return home because it would speed up to 45-50, but then would do the same thing again that I described above. Had to get the car towed to the dealer. I checked the OBD scanner and it said the problem was P0087, Fuel Rail Pressure Too Low. Dealer said it was that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. Vehicle has about 93,000 miles and is a 2017 model. Don't have the repair invoice yet, picking up the vehicle and paying the $1,700 dollar repair bill this afternoon. Can provide it later if you need/want it.

I heard a loud knocking noise, accompanied by a squeling, that increased/decreased with engine RPM emitting from the engine compartment. I quit driving the vehicle once I returned home. I had the vehicle towed to a Honda dealership where I was told the connecting rod bearing had failed. My vehicle was not included in a safety recall (23V-751) issued by Honda but suffered the same symptoms mentioned in the recall. Vehicle was diagnosed with "Rod knock" which requires to replace engine or rebuild it depending on damage. Honda has issued a recall for this issue but my vehicle was not part of that recall. The contact owned a 2017 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated that after parking on the side of the road and with the engine idling, a burning odor was present coming from the vehicle. Moments later smoke and flames were seen coming from the engine compartment which caused the hood to blow open. The fire department was immediately called to the scene and extinguished the flames. During the incident, the vehicle and personal property inside the vehicle were destroyed. A police report and fire report were taken at the scene and the vehicle was towed to an undisclosed location. The cause of the fire was not yet determined. The local dealer was notified of the incident. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 90,000.

  • 11/20/2023· ENGINE

My wife was driving our 2017 Honda Ridgeline when the engine suddenly stopped running and she lost power steering. She was able to coast a short distance as close to the side of the road as possible. Luckily she was only a hundred yards or so from our house on a quiet side street, however if it had been 20-30 seconds earlier she would have been on the highway or in the middle of a major intersection. There were no warnings or any other indication of a problem. The engine would not start despite a full charge on the battery. After towing it to the dealer for service, the engine was completely seized and they diagnosed it as the connecting rod bearing. The only remedy offered was full engine replacement. Hours after paying $9k for the repair, we saw news articles about NHTSA Campaign 23V751000 for 2017 Honda Ridgelines regarding a manufacturing error for the connecting rod bearing causing engine wear and may cause the engine to seize. Exactly the issue with our 2017 Ridgeline. Our VIN does not show in the campaign, so I believe Honda has mistakenly narrowed the breadth of the campaign or surreptitiously removed our VIN by the dealer since we had already paid on our own. There is also no way for me to verify that the replacement engine will not suffer the same issue. We opted for a used engine over OEM to save money, but were intentionally not warned about the recall before making the choice.

THE COMPLAINT WAS NOTED, CHECKED, AND AFTER A $998.19 SERVICE BILL, NO PROBLEMS OR FAULTS COULD BE LOCATED. AT 62K +/- BOTH WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE RIDGELINE WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER. AT THAT TIME I WAS INFORMED THE TRANSMISSION HAD FAILED AND HONDA REFUSED TO MAKE THE NECESSARY REPAIRS UNDER WARRANTY. THIS FLAW IS KNOWN TO HONDA AND HAS BEEN CORRECTED IN LATER MODELS. PROSPECTIVE BUYERS SHOULD BE WARNED ABOUT THE FAULT SO THIS MODEL RIDGELINE CAN BE AVOIDED. FINALLY, CONSUMERS SHOULD BE AWARE THAT HONDA REFUSES TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR DEFECTIVE PRODUCTS.

Broken wire(s) from the truck body to tailgate. Backup camera fails to work, making it extremely dangerous backing up truck. Honda dealer found the broken wires and quoted $498.00 to correct the problem. The camera start shorting out intermittently in Fall of 2021. Continuously started failing in May, 2022. No warning lights come on to warn of failure of camera. The camera just fails to turn on when backing up. This also puts people walking behind vehicle in danger when truck is backing up.

I had taken the truck to the mechanic no sooner than a month ago who changed the oil and did an inspection of the vehicle performing routine maintenance. Few weeks ago I had been driving when my engine started breaking down, the car would turn on drive for a moment then lose complete power to the wheels forcing myself and a friend to hitchhike home through the pitch dark. When we took the car into the shop they told us the engine was blown and that it’d need a completely new engine, although I had not been driving recklessly (maxing revs, speeding, harsh breaking ext) the reason I bring this up is I saw you were performing an investigation and I would like to include my vehicle into the scope as this problem was simply an instance of shotty build quality

I was going home after picking my grandson up from school. Without notice 1heard a thud and my engine stopped. Iwas on the highway proir to an exit and luckily made it to a safe spot. If this happened 500 feet further down the highway., would have been in construction with no shoulder, Very dangerous! ! had my Ridgeline towed to my mechanic, the engine was frozen, |t showed the same symptoms as the crankshaft bearings recall but my vin was not included in the recall. 1 contacted Vandergrift honda who said they would diagnose the failure. had it towed to them, but once management got involved, they refused to spend any effort. 1 towed it back to my mechanic. With all the problems with this engine, parts and rebuild engines are hard to find. My mechanic replaced my engine and Honde claims no responsibility.

The engine began making an metallic clicking noise that increased with engine RPM. I made an appointment with the local Honda dealership service center as soon as possible. The Honda dealership inspected the engine valve springs and the connecting rod bearings. The connecting rod bearings had failed but I had brought the vehicle in to the service center quickly enough that the failed connecting rod bearings did not appear to damage the crankshaft. The options I was provided with were to either replace the engine or replace the connecting rod bearings and connecting rod bolts with no warranty on the work as they could not guarantee the crankshaft had not been damaged. I provided all receipts for engine oil changes, engine oil filter changes, and engine air filter changes to Honda USA. Despite having an active recall for this exact problem (connecting rod bearing failure) on other 2017 Honda Ridgeline's with the same 3.5L V6 Engine, and performing all maintenance as needed with proof provided to Honda USA they denied my claim for vehicle age and mileage. My VIN was not included on the recall. I opted to have the connecting rod bearing, and connecting rod bolts replaced at the Honda dealership and had to pay out of pocket with no reimbursement from Honda, and no warranty on the work performed.

In August of 2023 the engine seized up. It had about 120,000. I took it to the local Honda Dealership and they said the engine had no compression, engine knocking was valves and suspected bent valves in head. I was offered a used engine for about $9,000. I ended up trading the vehicle in on a new Subaru and was given $4,000 as trade-in. I just read an article that this agency is investing a crankshaft and connecting rod bearing issue with Honda engines including the make and year of my car. I think what happened to me is exactly what you are investigating.

Engine started pinging on the Freeway. Pulled over immediately and had it towed by Auto Club to Morgan Auto Repair in Tracy, California. After diagnostics, they determined that the crankshaft was impaired by connecting rod bearing failure. Morgan Auto repair confirmed that the engine HAD THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF OIL AND DID NOT OVERHEAT. The engine is still fully intact(i,e no destruction to the engine block).

The Drive Train / Transmission has always had a "pause" then a "clunk" before shifting into or from Reverse gear, its worse now. The engine is starting to make noises and Im afraid its part of the engine recall of 2017 and it may fail and injury me while driving. I take excellent care of my truck and its only adult driven by me, hence the concern.

The torque converter failed once already while driving at highway speed, creating an unsafe condition as the vehicle went into “limp mode”. After the torque converter was replaced in 2022, the vehicle has continued in 2023 to exhibit judder from the torque converter lock-up clutch (TSB 17-025 and TSB 17-026) which is symptomatic of the original failure. As recognized by Honda in TSB 23-078, the torque converter may also have been manufactured improperly which led to the warranty extension. The Honda dealership service has verified all steps in TSBs have been completed, and they do not know how to resolve the judder. The concern is the transmission and/or torque converter will fail again creating a subsequent unsafe condition. Despite numerous TSBs with potential fixes, they have been unsuccessful in resolving the defects, which suggests this systemic issue needs elevated to a recall.

MY BACK-UP CAMERA SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING. I DID AN INTERNET SEARCH TO SEE IF THERE WAS SOMETHING I COULD DO TO RESET THE CAMERA. MULTIPLE POSTS INDICATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS WITH A PINCHED CABLE AT THE HINGE OF THE TAILGATE THAT SEVERS THE WIRES. I LOOKED WHERE THE PROBLEM WAS DESCRIBED AND FOUND THE CABLE PINCHED AND SEVERED. WHEN I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, THE SERVICE REP WAS NOT SURPRISED AND TOLD ME THAT ONCE IT WAS FIXED, I WOULD NEVER HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THE CABLE AGAIN. $870 DOLLARS LATER, I AM INCLINED TO BELIEVE THAT THE PROBLEM IS A DESIGN FLAW AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. THESE BACK-UP CAMERAS ARE SAFETY FEATURES THAT ARE NOW CONSIDERED STANDARD EQUIPMENT IN MOST NEW CARS. I CAN ATTEST TO THEIR EFFICACY, ESPECIALLY EXPERIENCING WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO DRIVE WITHOUT THE BACK-UP CAMERA.
