  Oil leak caused by insufficient ventilation and excessive oil burning caused rear main seal and timing chain belts to fail. Oil warning systems were too late in warning about problem until engine stalled out and all oil was consumed, causing engine failure. No low oil warnings came up until minutes after the initial engine shutdown. Research has shown that this has been a known chevy problem since 2017, with a recall being issued earlier on but no known recall now. Dealer has confirmed issues and also that the engine design is flawed and leads to oil burning excessively

After tuning off the vehicle, the warning lights disappeared. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the brake control modulator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to parts being on backorder. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 64,000. The VIN was not available.

Upon inspection, the contact noticed there was no oil on the dipstick. The positive crankcase ventilation valve (PCV) was frozen, causing the rear main seal to become fractured. No warning lights were illuminated prior to the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by the dealer or an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

The mechanic diagnosed that the timing chain and camshaft were faulty, and there was no oil in the engine. The mechanic informed the contact that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 103,000.

  Loss of engine oil due to Frozen PCV when driven in subzero blowing out rear main seal this is a common problem and design defect known by GM can cause complete engine failure and safety related issues. I have yet to have this repaired but I assume the price will be substantial

  I arrived at my workplace. Was there for about an hour, I then went outside to grab something from my vehicle and noticed that I was leaking oil. After further inspection, I realized that I no longer had oil in my vehicle. I had it towed to my service station. After looking at it they called me and said that the PCV had gotten clogged with ice, therefore causing pressure buildup and blowing out the rear main seal. There were no warning lights whatsoever of this problem. I am just happy that I wasn't on the highway or long drive, because this would have left me stranded or worse causing an accident. From doing research online, this seems to be an issue that GM is aware of and refuses to make right. They had a recall for this exact issue for model years 2010-2014 but now are refusing to issue one for later years, even though the same engine style and PCV placement are the same. Not telling their customers about this potential serious issue is almost criminal and then not standing behind their product with either a recall or reimbursement of cost of repairing is ridiculous.

  WE LIVE IN MN AND WENT OUT TO START OUR 2.4 EQUINOX AND IT STARTED AND THEN DIED. THIS WAS SITTING IN OUR DRIVEWAY AND WAS IN PARK WHEN IT HAPPENED. WE HAD IT TOWED TO A SHOP AND WAS TOLD THAT IT THERE WAS A PCV FREEZE UP WHICH CAUSED THE MAIN SEAL TO BLOW LOOSING THE OIL. THIS CAUSED THE TIMING CHAIN TO FAIL. WE REACHED OUT TO GM AND THEY STATED THIS IS OUT OF WARRANTEE AND THAT 2017 WHERE NOT EFFECTED EVEN THOU IT IS THE SAME MOTOR AS THE OTHERS THAT ARE AFFECTED. WE REACHED OUT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THE SAME THING THAT BECAUSE THE CAR HAS 80,000 MILES WE ARE OUT OF THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTEE.

Additionally, the contact noticed a puddle of oil in the driveway and there was no oil on the dipstick upon inspection. The contact stated that upon inspecting the vehicle he determined that the Positive Crankcase Valve (PCV) had frozen, and the engine rear main seal was busted. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in any recall. The manufacturer referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 97,400.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES READ BY OBD2 TOOL WERE: P0011,P0191,P228D,P0089 AND P0014. WHEN INVESTIGATING ONLINE, THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW BEING IGNORED BY THE OEM.

  The 2.4L engine is experiencing significant issues, including power loss and rapid oil consumption. The power loss has been observed while driving on both expressways and city streets. The oil burning commenced less than a month after an oil change, resulting in an oil level of zero. This situation poses a risk of accidents and endangers the occupants of the vehicle. An independent service center has confirmed the problem. The center determined that a new engine is necessary as the issue cannot be resolved. There have been no inspections by manufacturers, law enforcement, or other relevant authorities. Additionally, there was no warning about the oil being low to the point of being absent from the engine. The code for the power failure, P0303, was obtained from the service center. It is imperative that this issue be addressed promptly. Either the engine should be recalled or the vehicle should be repaired. Otherwise, I will be compelled to purchase a new engine or a new car.

  I have approximately 79000 miles on my [XXX] 2017 Equinox 2.4 SUV. I have 2 complaints. One is the blower for the heater works intermittently. The dealer claims it was the cabin air filter but I am not sure. There are a lot of reports on the internet claiming a melted plug causes this problem. The second complaint is the dealer claims the vent pipe for the PCV valve has condensation that froze and if I don't pay 764.00 to have it cleaned out the rear main oil seal will blow out and I will loose all the engine oil. I have also seen many reports of this happening on the internet. Has anyone investigated this and what was the results of the investigation? Should a car be sold in the northern states that can have the rear seal blow out just because the temperature is below freezing? Crankcase pressure increased and caused the rear main engine seal to fail, which inturn allowed all the engine oil to leak out. Due to oil starvation the timing chain components failed. Additional internal engine damage is possible, but not yet confirmed. Failed parts will be available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk?   I WAS DRIVING THE CAR ON FREEWAY. I TRIED SLOWING THE CAR BY PRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT IT WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO STOP THE SLOW THE CAR HENCE CAME THE SITUATION WHERE I HAD TO HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL HARDER TO ABLE TO STOP THE CAR TO AVOID THE ACCIDENT. I WAS NOT ABLE TO BREAK AT ALL AND IT ENDED UP COLLIDING WITH THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. IT WAS SURPRISING TO ME THAT NOT A SINGLE AIRBAG WAS POPPED OPEN, GIVEN THE MAGNITUDE OF AN ACCIDENT AND THE DAMAGE IT CAUSED (ESTIMATED DAMAGE OVER $10,000). The contact stated that the vehicle was pushed forward by the impact into the rear end of another vehicle. The contact stated that the rear end of the vehicle was crushed in to the rear wheel wells, and the front end of the vehicle, the hood, front bumper, and grill were also crushed back into the front wheel wells. The contact stated that the front air bags had not deployed after being pushed into the rear of the other vehicle. The contact was not sure what happened to the other two vehicles. The contact stated that the Police were called and EMS was also on scene. The contact stated that a Police report was filed. The contact stated that he was not transported to the hospital, but later had been taken by a friend to seek medical attention. The contact stated that the jolt of the impact had caused a concussion. Additionally, there were some bruising from the seat belt to the left shoulder. The contact stated that after the crash the seat belt failed to retract and the issue might be due to a sensor failure. The contact stated that the vehicle was towed to an impound lot and later declared a total loss by the Insurance Company. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 143,000.

  Rear main engine seal failed which was confirmed by the Chevy dealer. Vehicle had leaked massive amount of oil in driveway which was only noticed after wife drove car to work. Next day, vehicle needed 4 1/2 quarts of oil to register on dipstick and oil visibly dripping from engine approx. 2 drops per second. Red oil pressure light never cam on. Engine light was on for 1 week prior with error codes P0013 and P0014. Vehicle has 79k miles, no towing, and was 6 weeks out of 6 year warranty. The oil leak failure could have easily caused engine damage and left my wife broken down on the freeway. Dealer originally quoted $2600 for both repairs and dropped their quote to $2000. I believe the seal failure to be either design and/or manufacturing defect. I am greatly disappointed in GM for lack of quality control and not standing behind their products.

  I RENTED A 2017 CHEVY EQUINOX. I STARTED THE VEHICLE AND WENT INSIDE FOR IT TO HEAT UP. SOME HOW THE KEY FOB AND KEY TRANSMITTER GOT LEFT BEHIND. I DROVE APPROXIMATELY 20 MILES. I STOPPED AT A GAS STATION, TURN OFF CAR. WHEN I RETURNED THE CAR SAID NO FOB ON DASH AND I COULD NOT START IT. I DONT THINK I NEED TO EXPLAIN ALL THE REASONS THAT THIS COULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE.   My son was driving when the Pvc froze in very cold weather causing the rear main seal to leak oil, ruining the timing chain. Vehicle not drivable. Very expensive repair and could have been even worse if he had not pulled off he highway when he did. Can't believe GM knew about this problem for years and did nothing to solve it.

  Twice the exhaust has leaked into the cabin to the point where it is very noticeable. It causes headaches and breathing problems. GM has known of this issue for several years and it has been reported several times. GM placed a bandaid on it knowing it would fail.

The vehicle was brought to auto shop where they determined there was an oil consumption issue with the vehicle, and ultimately the engine would need to be replaced.   Driving on the highway, nothing unusual or out of the ordinary. Within a 30 second span of time, the car started making a horrible rattling sound, followed by a loud snap sound, then smoke, then I was off the road with oil pouring out of the bottom of the car. Towed home, car was dropped off at the Chevrolet dealership mechanic. As far as I can tell, it fits the description that others have had with this car, namely that some apparent oil consumption issue that never came up on warning lamps resulted in the catastrophic engine failure that nearly launched me off the highway. The vehicle is currently awaiting diagnostics from the mechanic, and I have yet to hear back from them over a week later. There were no warning lights of any sort, and the oil life meter said there was 38% oil life remaining before it would need an oil change. If I had known about this issue before I bought the car, there is a 0% chance I would have bought it.

  This was previously reported on March 10 2021 and I was given case #9-6591373301. It was a lease car that was returned to the dealership on March 31, 2021. After hitting a pothole in March 2020, the airbag light stayed on. The dealership did not take care of the problem and I was told at that time there were no recalls for that problem. I was told I could get it fixed and save the bill. Once an investigation was started and it was determined that indeed there was a problem, I should be entitled to be reimbursed. To date there have been no recalls although my mechanic had to replace both seat belts because replacing the driver's seat belt did not correct the problem. The diagnostic showed there was a seat belt problem and when they were removed you could see they were defective. When I returned the car I gave the service department the seat belts and to date, I have heard nothing. They did say because the defective seat belts had been replaced they would not be able to determine if the seat belts I turned in had a problem, which made no sense. Is that why no one bothered to contact me?

  We are experiencing excessive oil consumption problems with our 2017 Chevy Equinox that has a 2.4-liter Ecotec engine. We believe that the Engine replacements may be covered by a settlement so long as they can be traced directly to excessive oil consumption caused by defective piston rings. Can you please provide information as to where to go to pursue our reimbursement? The engine knocked due to there being low oil and not realizing the defect in the engine. There were no warning lights or an indication that there was a problem until the engine made noise. The issue started in May of 2022 and we did a repair on it that cost $2468.00, however, that repair did not fix the problem and now it is going to a dealership for another repair for the same issue.

  Driving my 2017 equinox and the engine started making noise, we checked the oil and it was good. The car has 113,000 miles on it, and the oil life has 34% left. The next day I get in it to drive away after being at the hospital and a warning comes on "Engine Power is Reduced" the car is sputtering and shuts off. The car had to be towed and they tell me my engine is with out oil and now the engine has to be replaced. NO warning, NO lights, and NO leaks. Now what Chevy?

  The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while her daughter was driving at various speeds, she heard abnormal knocking sounds coming from the engine. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where the camshaft was replaced; however, the failure reoccurred while driving. The vehicle was then taken to a second dealer Kelley Chevrolet (5220 Value Dr, Fort Wayne, IN 46808) where it was diagnosed that the camshaft needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that oil was not properly travelling to the top of the engine, which caused the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 81,000.

  Had car over 5 years from 11/2019 to current and had no issues at all. No check engine lights, nothing, and kept up on all routine maintenance. Car started up just fine drove on interstate from about 10 miles came to my exit and vehicle turned off and tried to restart itself. Car never started again. After getting it towed home replaced the started and that wasn’t the issue towed it again to Firestone they could tell me what the problem was because they don’t do engine work. Finally took it to a Chevy dealership who stated the timing chain broke and we need a whole engine replacement for $9600. Now we are stuck without a vehicle because of know issues GM AND Chevy have been aware of.

  This vehicle continues to burn oil and the engine light does not turn on when the vehicle is low on oil. I have had this car for 4 years and it has been an issue where when I take it in for oil change there is no oil left in engine. Vehicles are not supposed to burn oil. I have been told it is an internal engine issue and that this is a known problem from this vehicle by the Chevy dealership. It is unsafe for anyone to be traveling without oil in their vehicle and not have any type of alert to know it is low. I could break down at anytime and it would be a serious cost to me to have this repaired even though it is a “known issue“ with Chevy equinox.

  AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY OR COME OUT UPON EXTREMELY HIGH IMPACT: THE AIR BAGS IN MY 2017 EQUINOX DID NOT DEPLOY OUT OR COME OUT WHEN WE WHERE HIT AT A EXTREMELY HIGH IMPACT FROM THE HIT AND RUN DRIVER AND THE IMPACT CAUSED US TO HIT HEAD ON INTO AN WHITE SUV THAT WAS IN FRONT OF US ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE STREET GOING SOUTH ON LARAMIE. MY FIANC WAS DRIVING AND I WAS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE IN WE WAS GOING WEST ON EXPRESSWAY AND WE HAD EXITED OF LARAMIE AND HARRISON. FIANC LASHANTI SCOTT THAT'S ON MY INSURANCE ON THE MY 2017 EQUINOX WAS DRIVING SO WE MADE AN RIGHT TURN ON LARAMIE GOING NORTH TOWARDS LARAMIE AND HARRISON. AS WE WHERE APPROACHING AND CROSSINGS THE LIGHT THAT WAS GREEN AT THE NEXT LIGHT, AS WE PROCEEDED CROSSING THE GREEN LIGHT, AN SS BLACK SUV WAS COMING FROM WEST OF HARRISON TOWARDS US AT AN EXTREMELY HIGH SPEED 60-65 MILES PER HOUR. THERE WAS NO TIME TO ADJUST AND RECOVER TO AVOID THE SUV THAT HIT US AT SUCH A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. THE SS BLACK SUV THAT HIT US IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF MY 2017 EQUINOX IN WHICH CAUSED MY 2017 EQUINOX FROM THE IMPACT TO CRASH HEAD ONTO AN WHITE SUV THAT WAS DRIVING THE OPPOSITE SIDE GOING SOUTH OF LARAMIE TOWARDS HARRISON. AND FROM THE HIGH IMPACT OF THE SS BLACK SUV THAT HIT US SPENT AROUND AND HIT US AGAIN ON THE BACK REAR PASSENGER SIDE OF MY 2017 EQUINOX ALSO.

  AT 48,500 MILES APPROX. MY TRANSMISSION STARTED SLIPPING AND FAILING. IT STARTED WITH A JOLT WHEN COMING TO A STOP THEN WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN AND THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WENT FROM 1ST TO 2ND, 2ND TO 3RD IT WOULD JOLT HARD LIKE IT STRUGGLED TO CHANGE GEARS. IT DOES NOT SHOW ANY ISSUES ON THE MECHANICS COMPUTER. NOW 2 WEEKS LATER IT STALLS AT 14MPH WHEN GOING UP A HILL, IT WONT CHANGE GEARS AND LOSES POWER GOING DOWN TO 11MPH. IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. ITS THE V6, PREMIERE MODEL AND IS VERY DISAPPOINTING SINCE IT HAS LESS THAN 50,000 MILES. IT WAS LOOKED AT BRIEFLY BY ANOTHER MECHANIC WHO SAID MY TRANSMISSION WAS FAILING. I AM HAVING IT REBUILT WHEN THEY HAVE AN OPENING IN 2 WEEKS.

  I'VE OWNED THIS VEHICLE FOR A YEAR AND A HALF NOW. COUNTLESS TIMES I'VE HAD OIL LEAKING, INCREASED OIL CONSUMPTION, AND FREQUENT OIL CHANGES. THIS PAST TIME HAS BEEN A MONTH SINCE MY LAST OIL CHANGE, AND WHEN GETTING TO WORK THIS MORNING I NOTED SOUNDS COMING FROM THE ENGINE, AND CHECKED THE OIL TO FIND NO OIL LEFT. ONE MONTH, AND IT CONSUMED 5 QUARTS OF OIL. WHEN DRIVING AND COMING TO A STOP, THERE IS A NOTICEABLE HITCH, AS WELL AS WHEN ACCELERATING UP A HILL, ALONG WITH A SLIGHT KNOCK IN THE ENGINE WHEN OIL RUNS OUT.

  While the vehicle is being driven a message will appear service tire monitor system and all gauges on the dash do not work, the radio, heating a/c also stops.The message quickly changes to service airbag. (Photos of both messages attached) Issue started Nov of 2020 Vehicle has been seen by Gordon Chevrolet MI 4 times for service and they are unable to find the issue. We did inform them that if we moved the driver seat just a bit that seem to reset it. Doesn't seem to be as responsive to that now. At one point the BCM was mentioned but still as of today not resolved or fixed. My concern is when the vehicle says service airbag and you are driving it down the road I don't know that this airbag will work if something were to happen. The dealership is well aware of the ongoing unresolved issue and I have another appointment for November 1,2021 so they can look at it again.

  VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A CRASH WHERE ANOTHER CAR HIT ME IN THE PASSENGER SIDE UP FRONT IN A HARD CRASH.THE ENTIRE FRONT END AND RIGHT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED FRAME RAILS WERE BENT AND AC COMPONENTS WAS IN THE MOTOR.AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY INSURANCE TOTALED THE VEHICLE 17,200 OF DAMAGES

  HAD A ROUGH IDLE WAS DRIVING FINE. DRIVING HOME FROM REGULAR STREETS TO THENHIGHWAY AND ON THEBHIGHWAY THE ON BOARD COMPUTER SAID STABILITRAC NEEDS SERVICE SOON, ENGINE PEFERFORMANCE REDUCED. TRIED TO GET TO AN OFF RAMP THERE WAS A POP UNDER THE HOOD WHITE SMOKE OUT THE BACK AND THE CAR SHUT OFF ON THE HIGHWAY. HAD IT TOWED TO THE CLOSEST DEALER THEY HAVE INFORMED ME IT WAS CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE.
