- AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOWCampaign 18V085000 · 31/01/2018
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2016 Toyota Prius and Lexus RX 350, RX 350 F Sport, RX 450h F Sport and RX 450h vehicles and 2015-2016 Lexus NX 200T, NX Turbo and NX 300h vehicles. The air bag pressure sensors and/or the acceleration sensors may fail causing the side/curtain shield air bags and/or the front air bags to not deploy in the event of a crash.
Risk: If the air bags fail to deploy in a crash, it can increase the risk of injury.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the sensors as necessary based on their serial numbers, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin March 12, 2018. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are JLA, J0F.

Upon parking after 20-mile drive, severe leak of transmission oil from transmission oil cooler area, no warning messages/lights or fault codes present. No evidence of leak at starting point for drive, was sudden failure internal to transmission cooler with no evidence of impact/vibration damage or corrosion; failure was perhaps at welds of fins to tubing. Leaking oil creates fire and slip hazard, lack of any kind of warning to driver would have allowed continued driving until transmission failed except for luck that this was short trip. Vehicle has never been damaged in a crash, has been carefully inspected and maintained since purchase new. This is not a wear item and should never fail without external damage or corrosion, certainly not at 45,000 miles. Difficult to believe that this anything other than a manufacturing defect on this early production (VIN ending 002034) vehicle. Repaired by Lexus dealer with Lexus covering half of cost as “goodwill” (cost to me at ~$1,050 incl. towing), although dealer attempted to return vehicle without having reinstalled air duct and lower shroud.
- 08/31/2022· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
Water may leak from heavy rain, from the sunroof region into a part of the roof, leading to water leaking from the interior microphone above the driver seat. Seems to be a common issue amongst 2016-2017 RX350’s but no recalls. This is a safety issue given that the microphone is where the water leaks to, compromising other electrical systems. In addition, water builds and wets the headliner causing mold/mildew smell, possibly leading to future mold build up which is harmful to health. Lexus in Houston inspected and stated a new sunroof is needed, which is costly, although this is a manufacturer flaw.

The hood latch and cable malfunctioned three times in one year. Once in January 2024 (I replaced the latch); once in July 2024 (the dealer recommended to eventually replace the cable, but was able to fix it); and most recently on [XXX] (the dealer identified the cable was faulty and needed to be replaced). The hood would close but not all the way and the hood release had no tension. There was prior warning or symptoms prior to the hood lock failure. All the records for this is with the service department of Pohanka Lexus in Chantilly, VA. I attached the most recent service visit. I took it to the Lexus dealer service center each time. I am getting it fixed this weekend by another service shop (because Lexus charges too much). This was extremely dangerous because if the hood is not secure, it could open at any time while driving and cause an accident, especially at high speeds. There is the potential that if the hood does not lock when closed after it opens, that it could possibly fly open while the car is in motion. 2016 RX350 IS A NEW PLATFORM. THE PASSENGER SIDE CAR PASSING INDICATOR DOES NOT ALWAYS INDICATE A CAR IN THE "BLIND SPOT". AFTER DRIVING THE CAR FOR A FEW MONTHS, I NOTIFIED MY LOCAL LEXUS DEALER. MY SALESMAN AND I DROVE MY VEHICLE FOR A TEST RUN AND THE PROBLEM CONSISTENTLY AROSE. THE SALESMAN SAID THAT THIS WAS A NEW EXPERIENCE FOR HIM IN A LEXUS VEHICLE WITH THIS FEATURE. LEXUS HAD A TEAM INSPECT THE VEHICLE. LEXUS SAID THAT THE LACK OF THE PASSING INDICATOR TO SEE ALL VEHICLES IN THE BLIND SPOT WAS NORMAL FOR THE 2016 LEXUS RX 350. I HAVE DRIVEN THE CAR FOR 8 MONTHS. I FIRST NOTICED THE APPARENT MALFUNCTION DRIVING BACK TO PA FROM FL. I BELIEVE THAT THE CAR PASSING INDICATOR SYSTEM USES RELATIVE DIFFERENCES OF SPEED BETWEEN MY CAR AND THE CAR BEING PASSED TO ACTIVATE THE FEATURE. FOR EXAMPLE, THE INDICATOR LIGHT WILL NOT GO ON WHILE I PASS A CAR A MUCH GREATER SPEED THAN THE CAR BEING PASSED. I WOULD GUESS THE DIFFERENCE MAY BE 20 MPH OR SO. HOWEVER, IF I PASS A CAR SLOWLY OR AT A LOW DIFFERENCE OF SPEED, THE CAR PASSING INDICATOR LIGHT FUNCTIONS AS ONE WOULD EXPECT. OF INTEREST IS THAT MY WIFE HAS A 2013 LEXUS RS350 WITH A CAR PASSING INDICATOR SYSTEM AND HER CAR WILL ALWAYS INDICATE A CAR IN THE BLIND SPOT REGARDLESS OF HOW FAST THE RS350 PASSES ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE LACK OF INDICATING A VEHICLE IN THE RIGHT BLIND SPOT AT ALL TIMES IN MY VEHICLE IS DANGEROUS. THIS SAFETY FEATURE HAS POOR DESIGN. THE 2016 WAS JUST INTRODUCED IN LATE 2015. LEXUS KNOWS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND CALLS IT A NORMAL FUNCTION. I HAVE NOT YET RECEIVED AN ADEQUATE EXPLANATION FROM LEXUS WHY THE CAR PASSING INDICATOR SYSTEM IN THE 2016 RX350 WAS DESIGNED THIS WAY PURPOSELY. I BELIEVE THAT THIS ISSUE IS A SERIOUS FLAW. I HAVE ENCLOSED TWO DOCUMENTS I HAVE RECEIVED FROM LEXUS. I DID NOT ASK FOR PROTECTION UNDER THE LEMON LAW.

I am reporting a safety issue with a 2016 Lexus RX350, VIN [XXX], with about 60,000 miles. The vehicle is registered in [XXX] and was being driven to [XXX] when it suddenly overheated on XXX near [XXX]. The warning lights appeared while the vehicle was traveling at highway speed. The driver immediately took the first available exit within about one minute. The failed system appears to be the engine cooling system, specifically the water pump. The vehicle is currently at Kendall Lexus of Eugene and should be available for inspection. This failure created a safety risk because it happened suddenly on a major highway. The driver had to exit quickly and the vehicle became disabled far from home. A sudden coolant-loss or overheating event at highway speed can leave drivers stranded in unsafe locations with very little warning. Kendall Lexus of Eugene inspected the vehicle. Their Service Manager stated in writing that the technician found a leaking water pump, misfires in every cylinder, and a 95% leak in cylinder #6 through the exhaust valves. She stated that the water pump failure caused the vehicle to lose coolant, overheat, and suffer internal engine damage requiring engine replacement. Lexus Customer Relations has been notified under Case #XXX. Whether Lexus corporate has physically inspected the vehicle is unknown. Before the incident, there were no known warning signs. The warning lights appeared five hours into the road trip when the overheating occurred. After exiting, the driver let the vehicle cool for 30 minutes, checked for visible leaks, and tried to continue only briefly around the block. The warning returned almost immediately, so the vehicle was towed. This vehicle has extensive Lexus dealership maintenance history. Lexus quoted about $20,000 for engine replacement. I was driving and pressed the button to close the sunshade on the panoramic sunroof when I heard this like a grinding noise. The cloth sunshade stopped moving. Then I heard a pop noise, and the sunshade came down, and it hit me more on the back of the neck. Then I heard something fall on the floor behind me in the back seat area. I couldn't pull over right away, stopped at a store, and there was a black, plastic and metal piece that was on the floor in back. The sunshade itself was partly hanging off the ceiling where it came from. It didn't hurt but of course it startled me. This happened on Friday going to work 7/18/2025. I haven't used the sunroof for a while because it has been too hot but Friday I wanted some natural air, and opened it up. Researching I see that it is supposed to be all one piece, and everything which includes the entire panoramic sunroof to be replaced which is close to $3,000. I found online that a lot of people have the same problem for years 16-22 on the RX. I found out where the dealers are telling people excessive heat melts the glue holding these adapters in place, and it eventually give way and break. Most people including me park outside, I don't have a garage, and it's summer, this is defective, and it should be covered my Lexus. Since it just happened yesterday, the vehicle wasn't inspected by nobody, there were no warning signs that this was happening either. The safety issue is when it hit me on the back of the neck while I was driving. Thank you for your time.

OTHER THAN THE SHATTERED GLASS, THERE WAS NO DEBRIS ON THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. TAKATA RECALL. AIRBAGS ON PASSENGER SIDE ALL DEPLOYED WITH ZERO IMPACT TO THE VEHICLE. A TRUCK WAS DRIVING 5 MPH NEXT TO ME WHEN HE HAD A BLOWOUT AND THE LOUD NOISE CAUSED THE AIRBAGS TO DEPLOY.

Timing Cover gasket leak. Apparently this is very common problem with 2016 Lexus RX 350 due to a bad design by Lexus. Lexus is quoting ~7000 to fix

On April 29 while travelling on I185 toward Columbus, GA I heard a loud noise followed by the sound of crumbled glass. When I could find a safe place to pull over, I looked and discovered that my moonroof had shattered. Had the curtain under the moonroof had not been drawn, I would have been hit with the shattered glass, probably resulting in my loss of control over the vehicle at interstate speed, resulting in a serious accident or death. I returned immediately to my dealership, Hennessy Lexus in Duluth, Georgia. They contacted the Lexus regional manager, who denied Lexus' responsibility for the failure. I did, (and needed to) have the moonroof repaired by the dealership. I also contacted Lexus Corporate office by phone, and sent them by email a copy of photos of the broken moonroof and the invoice for the repair. They passed my inquiry down to the regional manager (again) who again denied Lexus responsibility for the failure. The failure occurred in fair weather on a highway with very little traffic, trees or overpasses, and there was no reason to believe that any outside forces caused the failure. I feel that this potentially dangerous failure is a result of poor manufacture or design.
