Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Veloster, 2012 Santa Fe, 2011-2013 Sonata Hybrid, and 2016 Sonata Hybrid vehicles. The connecting rod bearings inside the engine may wear prematurely, which over time can result in engine damage.

Risk: A damaged engine can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine. If bearing damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also install a software update containing a new Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS). Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 31, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 198.

  • 12/26/2022· UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE

I was driving my 2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo when I started to hear a loud knocking sound coming from the engine. At this time I also noticed a decline in power and the check engine light came on. I made an appointment to bring the car to my local Hyundai dealership to have the car looked at. While en route to the dealership, the car suddenly made a loud bang and a profusion of smoke came out of the engine and engulfed the car, inside & out, making it impossible for not only me to see but also limited visibility for the person following me, which was extremely dangerous. I couldn't see or breathe and had to rapidly exit the car on the side of a busy road with no shoulder. The engine completely failed and the car was not drivable. I had the car towed to the Hyundai dealership where they told me the engine had seized and needed to be completely replaced. Although my VIN is not yet included in engine recall 20V746000, my car has the 1.6 liter GDI Gamma engine included in that recall. In addition, the exact chain of events that I experienced have been described by others whose cars are included in the recall which describes connecting rod bearings inside the engine wearing prematurely (creating a knocking sound and reduced engine power), causing engine damage. I am requesting an investigation into this incident as I feel that my car should be included in the recall. It was a very dangerous incident and I don't want others to needlessly experience this same problem, possibly with more harmful consequences.

Engine knocking loudly on cold start indicating possible rod bearing wear addressed on nhtsa safety recall number 20v746000. Car was taken to hyundai dealer for recall engine inspection and given clean bill of health and removed from recall listing. Vehicle was at the dealership for less than an hour which is not enough time to do the necessary inspection for rod bearing wear. Knock sensor software was updated, but knock sensors are designed to detect piston clatter or knock, known as preignition. Knock sensors do not and cannot detect engine noise from worn rod bearings. The inspection method obviously did not include any actual mechanical measurement for bearing runout to determine actual wear, but instead was based on what the tech could hear and his personal determination or that of his superior. I contend my car is still at risk for early engine failure as outlined in the safety recall and should be reinstated for a proper inspection.

  • 12/10/2025· ENGINE

On March 2024, I had my veloster towed to a certified Hyundai service dealer because it suddenly began losing power, the oil light came on, the engine light flickered, and it began making a whining noise, and then the engine died and wouldn’t crank again. It took them weeks to diagnose it, and they told me the turbo was out in it, and quoted me an absurd amount to replace it. I had the turbo replaced, as well as some gaskets, the coils and spark plugs. It ran fine after that until June 2025 when the oil and check engine light came on and the engine died again while we were coming home from a vacation, 2 hours south of where we live in a tiny town that had no dealership or rental company within 100 miles. We found a small mechanic who said it needed a lower fuel pump. He put one in it and we got back on the road, but it still wasn’t running as well as it should. It don’t have quite as much power, but no dash lights came on. When I got home I took it to another local certified Hyundai service dealer, who said it needed new coils and spark plugs again, so they replaced them. Again it ran fine for a while until the day after thanksgiving this year, 11/25, when the oil light came on again at the end of my road. I took it to another local certified auto parts store who read the codes and found no suggested fix. No certified dealers were open that day, so I took it to Pep Boys where the engine light came on when I pulled in, and who said they thought it needed new timing solenoids, and put them in it. When they finished, they drove it and told me they felt like the turbo was going out and advised I take it to the dealer again. I had it towed to a certified Hyundai service dealer on Monday 12/01/25. They diagnosed it as needing a new turbo (again), a lower oil pan, and an oil switch. Quoted $3550. Over a week later today they told me that after putting it all in and tiring it on that the oil light came back on. They have now diagnosed it as needing an oil pump.

The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Veloster. While the contact’s wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle suddenly lost power, with the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle then stalled at a stoplight. The vehicle was restarted and immediately driven to the local dealer, who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the engine compression was abnormal and advised the contact that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that while at the dealer, the service and diagnostic guidelines were not followed regarding the NHTSA Action Number: EA21003 (ENGINE), and the coverage was denied. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 125,367.

  • 12/09/2025· POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

While driving my 2016 Hyundai Veloster (VIN: [XXX] ) on the highway, the vehicle suddenly lost acceleration. I went from 60 mph down to 20 mph with no throttle response, and the car only continued moving briefly from momentum. I was forced to stop in unsafe highway conditions and had the vehicle towed home. Prior to this complete failure, the car had recurring transmission/drive issues: it would start, but when placed in reverse it moved backward, and when shifted into drive it still only moved backward. Despite repeated repair attempts, the problems persisted. A certified mechanic later inspected the vehicle and confirmed severe internal engine damage, including metallic noises, blue smoke, oil leakage from worn piston rings, and complete compression loss. The mechanic concluded the vehicle requires deep engine repair or replacement. These failures are consistent with widespread reports of Hyundai Veloster engine defects, which pose serious safety risks to drivers. My vehicle is now inoperable despite responsible maintenance and repeated attempts to fix the issue. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

While I was driving down the road I suddenly heard a rod knock coming from the engine. I immediately pulled over and turned the car off. I was fortunate that I am aware of this known problem and can recognize the symptoms. An oil warning like appeared after the sound of the rod knock and just before I turned the engine off. I was on a local highway at the time and knew that the rod knock would likely result in an engine fire if I did not turn it off immediately. I checked the oil on the car and found that it was suddenly very low, which came as a surprise because I had just checked the oil a couple days before. I have since read that a common symptom associated with the Hyundai engine problems is sudden excessive oil consumption. After contacting Hyundai and insisting that this is a known problem with the 2016 Veloster Turbo they inspected the engine and confirmed the rod bearing was worn and the rod was knocking. They refused to acknowledge that ANY 2016 Velosters had been recalled for engine problems and refused to discuss it further. Since my car was still under warranty, the most they would agree to was partially covering the repair under warranty because I had modified the air intake on the car. To exacerbate the scenario, it took over 3 months for the local dealership to complete the repairs which were completed in just a few hours.

The "touch screen" in the car has warped from heat and no longer responds to touch. Many features and settings for the car are no longer available. My driveway has a slight incline to get out of and every morning when I start to leave the car will start to jerk- like it isn't gong into gear and i have to back off the gas pedal to stop it. It is hard to describe. But it definitely should not be making that sound. Yes I can take if for inspection. When I am at a stop light or just stopped and whenever I turn the car wants to hesitate and sometimes jerks me. Transmission issue here I believe. About got hit on several times because of the engine not performing when I press the gas. When I drive on the highway for 2-4 hrs, when I get off and stop the car is like it is still on the highway. Meaning when I push on the throttle it takes off. As far as I know, when I take my car to Hyundai for oil changes and maintenance work they haven't inspected my car. Ever since I purchased the car- it has never ran right. Something for sure is wrong with the motor- When I need the turbo to work- it kicks in around 40 mile an hr- not when I put on the gas. The car just runs terrible. There is also a horrible blind spot on both sides where the mirrors are. Horrible.

Shortly after finishing major repairs at my local dealer, I started to expirience, what I believe, now, to be a "low-end engine knock". Engine knock can usually occur due to oil starvation, where the connecting rod bearings are worn and debris enters the engine. So, I brought my car back to the dealer to ask them what this strange noise was I was hearing; I asked them if it could be the brand new clutch, or their equipment they left in the engine bay for me. They gave me an answer and it was to not drive the car anymore. One employee of the dealer even suggested "wrapping it around a telephone pole"... They told me what the repairs would cost and I had not qualified for a warranty extention so I left. I acquired a definitive diagnostic elsewhere and was shown the gravity of the situation. My oil filter had caught pieces of the engine and it was dubbed an engine knock. This incident took me completely by surprise. I regularly changed my oil and never saw my levels get so low that they would be considered empty. I have only owned the car for 5 years and it being only 8 years old, I was hoping to enjoy the driving expirience for years to come. That sensation has been replaced with apprehension and possible engine fire... how do I afford to buy a new car every 5 years if I can't drive the one I have now??

It started with me having to get oil changes every 3 months, then 2, then 1, now I am forced to go get oil top offs every 2-3 weeks or the check oil light comes on and car drives very rough. I have been reaching out and opening cases with Hyundai and working with my local dealer for a year now and still nothing is being resolved. I need my engine replaced and they refuse, wanting me to jump through hoops and doing various tests only to tell me that even after I pay thousands for the tests, there’s no guarantee they can replace the engine. This is a known issue when you search online and thousands of people’s Hyundais are being affected. This vehicle is less than 10 years old it should not be having these issues. Hyundai is at fault for creating faulty vehicles and they are refusing to do anything about it.

After previous complaint I filed, my engine continued to decline. Began burning a quart of oil approximately every 240 miles and has now almost completely lost power. It will not go above 25 miles per hour. I can not drive it anywhere except within two miles of my house where the speed limit is 25mph. EXCEEDINGLY DANGEROUS! It will die while driving and crank right back up but then die again. As contained in my previous complaint - Check engine light has been flashing since last December, Oil light comes on approximately every 240 miles. Other model years of this car have been recalled due to oil issues - but not this one. Yes the engine has been inspected and everyone agrees the engine is bad but Hyundai refuses to do anything about it due to the car not being included in the previous recall years. PLEASE inspect it. Anytime you want. It's not like I can drive it anywhere. I would drive it straight to a junk yard, but am still paying on it. You should know, if you don't already, that Hyundai is regularly giving owners of cars that have been included in the recall, the runaround on repairing anything. There are multiple facebook groups with literally THOUSANDS of people complaining about the same or similar issues with their Hyundai vehicles and nothing is being done. IT'S BEEN IN AND OUT OF THE DEALERSHIP FOR 5 MONTHS NOW, TOTALING OVER 70 DAYS. THERE HAVE BEEN GAS ISSUES - GAS FUMES SMELL OUTSIDE AND INSIDE VEHICLE, LOSING GAS ABNORMALLY FAST WHEN DRIVING, GAS TANK NOT FILLING TO FULL. I was driving, heard a big thunk then everything went dead. No brakes no engine control. After removing the bottom cover it appears that something broke and burst the engine bottom.block.

I am going to answer each point one by one for clarity. 1.) Mass oil consumption from bad piston rings, and yes it is available. 2.) I was driving after work one night and my oil pressure light was blinking red. Needed to immedelty pull to the side and have someone get me oil to top off. This was when I first found out about this issue. 3.) Yes as it is a constant problem and I've had two different mechanics look and confirm that my engine is essentially toast. 4.) No, not yet as I am not willing to pay an absurd amount of money for a dealer inspection unless they truely mean well with it. 5.) Other than the red oil pressure light I mentioned eariler, no. This was Augest 12th. Bought the car from the dealer April 18th.

CAR SOMETIMES ACCELERATES BY ITSELF EVEN WHEN OFF THE GAS AND ON THE BRAKES. LUNGES IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. PASSING GEAR SOMETIMES REVS UP TO 6500RPM'S BUT STAYS IN THE CURRENT SPEED. SOMETIMES CAR STAYS AT A CERTAIN RPM EVEN IF NOT ON THE GAS AND WONT SLOW DOWN. BAD LAG AND TERRIBLE DEAD SPOTS IN ACCELERATION. I FEEL LIKE TRANSMISSION IS NOT COMMUNICATING WELL WITH CONTROL MODULE AND GAS PEDAL POSITION SENSOR IS WAY OFF THE MARK. CAR HAS PUT ME IN LIFE THREATENING SITUATIONS BUT HYUNDAI SERVICE SAYS THEY CANT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM BUT ONLY DROVE IT 7 MILES. I BOUGHT CAR BRAND NEW AND JUST TURNED 5800 MILES BUT HAS BEEN BACK FOR THIS PROBLEM 4 TIMES NOW.

I WAS SITTING IN A LINE OF CARS TO GET ON THE FREEWAY I MERGE INTO TRAFFIC TO HAVE THE CAR STUMBLE AND JUMP AND WONT GO, I WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED WHEN THE CAR DECIDED TO TAKE OFF LIKE A ROCKET AND I ALMOST HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME, THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW IN 2016 AND HAS CONTINUED TO GET WORSE, THIS WAS THE FIRST INCIDENT ABOUT 6 MONTHS AFTER I GOT IT, I TOOK IT IN THE DEALER, THEY HAD A RECALL AND FIXED IT FOR A WHILE, THEN THIS SAME THING HAPPENS ALL THE TIME ON A DAILY BASIS, UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS ITS DANGEROUS BECAUSE YOU DONT KNOW WHAT THE CAR IS OR ISNT GOING TO DO, WILL IT GO WHEN I NEED IT TO ? OR STALL THATS THE HUGE QUESTION, I HAVE HAD IT TO THE DEALER 4 TIMES TO HAVE THEM TELL ME THEY ALL DRIVE LIKE THAT AND THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT OR WHAT TO DO, I HAVE GOTTEN RELUCTANT TO DRIVE IT ONLY WHEN I HAVE TO BECAUSE IM AFRAID IT WILL STALL OR LEAVE ME STRANDED, THIS MORNING IM COMING TO WORK AND STOPPED AT A SIGN, THEN WHEN IT WAS CLEAR I GO WELL NO I DONT BECAUSE THE CAR ACTED LIKE IT WAS STUCK, I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET AND IT FINALLY CAUGHT AND TOOK OFF, I AM A VERY CAUTIOUS DRIVER SO ALL OF THIS HAPPENING IM EXTREMELY CAREFUL IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, BUT SOMETHING HAS GOT TO BE DONE
