Vacuum pump busted as shown in photos. Once that busted it sent metal shrapnel into the engine which broke a piece of the cam shaft into bits. There were metal fragments that had to be meticulously cleaned out of my engine block. The loss of vacuum seal caused me to lose brakes while driving in stop and go traffic on the highway.

My 2016 Chevrolet Colorado lost all power steering while driving down the road. My young daughter was in the vehicle with me on a busy highway when I lost my ability to safely steer the vehicle. The stabilitrak light came on and that is when the power steering failed and I had to force my vehicle off the roadway manually to avoid getting into a collision. Had I needed to quickly steer to avoid another vehicle, obstacle, or maneuver a sharp turn at those speeds that could have been fatal for me, my daughter, and potentially other drivers or pedestrians. The vehicle was diagnosed and the issue was reproduced and confirmee at an independent service center as described. It was determined this was a known issue with similar make and model Chevrolet Colorados that were already on recall however my VIN was not included. It was determined to be a defective steering wheel torque sensor (code C0545) and required a complete steering rack replacement. They inspected the wiring harness had not chafed causing any damage, and that it was the sensor. There were no warning lights prior to the failure and it was abrupt while driving. The stabilitrak light came on simultaneously to the power steering failing.

My power steering goes out intermittently. I get a power steering drive with care and stabilitrak service on my dash. It’ll go back to normal when I shut off the truck and restart. But sometimes the service error doesn’t go away. Also, while power steering is out service rear camera comes in intermittently too.

VEHICLE HAS BUILT IN FEATURE OF HILL ASSIST THAT IS OVERRIDING DRIVER. DECIDES TO STOP OR SPEED UP ON HILLS AT WILL AND LAGS AND WON'T REGISTER WHAT THE DRIVER IS DOING FOR QUITE SOME TIME. HILLS ARE VERY DANGEROUS WITH THIS VEHICLE AND GM REFUSES TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE AND DEBUG THE SOFTWARE TO FIX IT. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS AND STILL NOTHING. IT'S HAS CREATED AN ISSUE TO WHERE I COULDN'T STOP ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS, AND LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO AVOID AND VEHICLES AND PULL OFF THE ROAD AFTER PLACING THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL. THE ONLY WAY TO OVERRIDE THE FEATURE IS WHEN YOU ARE IN CRUISE CONTROL. I HAVE HAD TO SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF TO GETS THE ENGINE TO STOP REVVING FORWARD AND HAVE TAKEN IT TO DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES. IT IS NOT SAFE FOR ME OR ANYONE NEAR THE TRUCK.

ABOUT HALF DOZEN TIMES MY KEY WOULD TURN OFF THE ENGINE BUT NOT THE DASH (RADIO, LIGHT ETC) THEN WOULD NOT TURN FAR ENOUGH SO I COULD REMOVE THE KEY. AFTER RESTARTING AND SHIFTING THROUGH THE GEARS A COUPLE OF TIMES IT WOULD TURN OFF AS IT SHOULD AND I COULD REMOVE THE KEY. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME BUT IS A PAIN WHEN YOUR NOT SURE IF YOU WILL GET THE KEY OUT AT THE STORE.

THIS IS THE 2ND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. ONCE IN 2018 APPROX FEB. THE STEERING LOST ALL ELECTRIC ASSIST. THIS ALWAYS APPEARED AFTER IT WAS DRIVEN AND HAD BEEN PARKED. IT DID THIS ABOUT 4 TIMES BEFORE THE DEALER WOULD REPAIR IT. AT THAT TIME EVERYTHING WAS COVERED BY WARRANTY. THIS TIME, THE SAME PROBLEM, LOSS OF ALL STEERING ASSIST AFTER DRIVING AND IT WAS PARKED. SAME ISSUE, THIS TIME THEY TELL ME THE STEERING GEAR BOX NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF OVER $2000.00. EXACTLY THE SAME ISSUE THE 2015 WAS HAVING. I HAVE READ THE COMPLAINTS AND I FEAR THIS WILL HAPPEN AT HIGHWAY SPEED. WE LIVE IN AN EXTREME COLD CLIMATE AT TIMES AND BOTH INSTANCES MY VEHICLE WAS PARKED AFTER DRIVING IN -20F WEATHER.

AS I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE HOME FROM WORK, MY VEHICLE LOST ACCELERATION AND THE STABILTRAX WARNING CAME ON. I HAD TO PULL OFF OF THE HIGHWAY AS FAST AS I COULD DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE SPEED WAS 75 AND MY VEHICLE WAS DECELERATING VERY QUICKLY. I TURNED MY CAR OFF MOMENTARILY AND IT MAGICALLY BECAME NORMAL OTHER THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYING ON. I ONLY HAVE 41000 MILES ON MY TRUCK, SO THERE IS NO REASON WHY IT SHOULD BE MESSING UP ALREADY! FROM THE LOOKS OF THE RESEARCH I HAVE DONE, THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE ON THIS YEA,R MAKE, AND MODEL OF THIS TRUCK. IT RUNS GREAT SOME DAYS AND CAUSES ME TO HAVE TO PULL OVER MULTIPLE TIMES OTHER DAYS. VERY FRUSTRATING!

This has caused the power steering to go out as I'm drive which has almost caused me to be involved in multiple accidents. I am hoping that this being a KNOWN issue with this year and model of vehicle it gets put on the recall list so this issue doesn't potentially kill someone. Thank you,

WHILE DRIVING FROM THE GROCERY STORE TO OUR HOUSE, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME INCREDIBLY STIFF AND A MESSAGE APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD WARNING ME TO SERVICE POWER STEERING AND DRIVE WITH CARE. I WAS MAKING A RIGHT TURN OUT OF THE PARKING LOT ONTO THE CITY STREET AND THE STEERING WHEEL WENT STIFF AND THE MESSAGE APPEARED. I HAD TO MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL WITH A LOT OF FORCE TO AVOID CROSSING OVER THE CORRECT LANE AND GO ONTO HEAD ON TRAFFIC. LUCKILY THE GROCERY STORE ISN'T FAR FROM MY HOUSE. IF MY WIFE OR SONS HAD BEEN DRIVING THEN THIS COULD HAVE ENDED BADLY. THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME I'VE LOST POWER STEERING. THIS HAS HAPPENED WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY. WHEN ON THE HIGHWAY I TURNED TO THE OFF RAMP AND AGAIN THE STEERING WHEEL WENT STIFF WITH THE POWER STEERING LOSS MESSAGE. SINCE THEN THE TRUCK DOESN'T SEE MUCH USE. LATELY, IT HAS BEEN GETTING SO BAD THAT THE POWER STEERING DOESN'T EVEN WORK AND STARTS STIFF WHEN FIRST TURNING ON THE TRUCK. SOMETIMES THE POWER STEERING ISN'T STIFF WHEN FIRST TURNED ON BUT THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING MESSAGE STILL OCCURS. THE TRUCK JUST SITS UNUSED BECAUSE IT IS FLAT OUT DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. I'VE CHECKED ALL OF THE FUSES AND THEY WERE ALL FINE. I'VE DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY FOR 20 MINUTES AND RECONNECTED IT AND THE STEERING WHEEL IS STILL STIFF AND THE SAME POWERING STEERING LOSS MESSAGE.

Key gets locked in the ignition after you put it in park and try shut off the vehicle. Vehicle won’t turn off. It takes 10 to 20 minutes before it will release the key. I believe this is a safety issue and have seen a good amount of people online that have the same issue and the manufacture refusing to address or fix the problem.

The electric power steering system on my vehicle intermittently fails while I am driving. When the failure occurs, the steering suddenly becomes extremely heavy and difficult to control, creating an immediate safety risk to me and to others on the road. The loss of power steering has happened multiple times with no advance warning. Each time, the only way to temporarily restore normal steering is to pull over, turn the vehicle off, and restart it. The problem occurs randomly and without a pattern. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The issue has been evaluated by the dealer’s service center. They were not able to reproduce the failure during their inspection, but they did confirm that the vehicle had stored a diagnostic trouble code indicating a power steering failure. The service center reported that the code was too generic to determine the root cause, and no repair was performed. They acknowledged that the steering failure had occurred based on the stored code, but could not identify why it was happening. During the failures, the vehicle displays warning messages stating that both Stabilitrak and Power Steering have failed. These messages appear only at the moment of failure, with no prior warning lights or symptoms. This intermittent loss of power steering severely compromises safe operation of the vehicle, especially when turning at low speeds, entering or exiting parking lots, or navigating intersections. It puts me, my passengers, and the surrounding drivers and pedestrians at risk because the vehicle cannot be steered normally when the failure occurs.

In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle was driven very slowly, and the contact used added force to steer the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact referenced an unknown recall for the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado with a similar description of a failure; however, the VIN was not under recall. The contact stated that an online forum advised the contact to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. While driving the DIC displays "service stabilitrak" and "power steering, drive with care" messages accompanied by a loss of power steering. This has happened anywhere between a standstill at a traffic light and highway speeds. This makes it incredibly difficult to steer at low speeds. My mother (65 year old) was driving her 2016 Chevy Colorado alone on the freeway at about 50 mph in traffic. Upon changing lanes her power steering went out and it was very difficult for her to steer the vehicle. She says a warning message came up about the power steering but she cleared it quick and doesn't remember exactly what it said. The Stabilitrak symbol was illuminated the entire time as well on her dash. She was only about 10 minutes from home and drove home that way, slowly in the slow lane and then on the streets, struggling with the steering the entire time. Unable to pull it in the driveway she left it parked on the street and came in and told me what happened. Upon restarting the car and test driving it there were no more warnings and the power steering was working as normal. We took it to the dealership to have it checked out as I was very concerned seeing the recall of 2015 Colorado's for power steering issues and numerous reports online about the 2016 having similar issues. The GM dealership ran their tests and performed a multipoint vehicle inspection but found nothing and were unable to reproduce the issue. My mother does not want to drive the vehicle on the freeway anymore after her experience and is aware to pull over safely on the street if it happens again and shutdown and restart the vehicle to reset the power steering. I am very concerned this issue will arise again seeing the reports online.

The vehicle steering system stopped working while driving and a steering and stabilitytrac lights came on. This occurred also occurred last week. In both cases the error resolved itself after fighting the wheel to the side of the road and restarting the car. The failure of this key control component presents an obvious risk of injury or death. I was therefore concerned to find that this exact same issue arose on the prior year Colorado (2015) and resulted in a formal recall. I also saw on line a multitude of reports for this same issue on 2016 trucks and was troubled by seeing that no recall or corrective action has been ordered by GM or the NHTSA. My transmission suddenly failed while I was in drive, stopped, at a stop light. I had the transmission repaired. It was a sealed unit with nothing visible from the outside. I would have had to pay a substantial core charge to keep the failed unit, which I did not do so it was not inspected and is not available to my knowledge. My safety was put at risk because I could not move my vehicle in heavy afternoon rush hour traffic on a busy city street. The police did not respond. A tow truck took 50 minutes to arrive. My vehicle was in a traffic lane. My safety was put at risk because I had to direct on-rushing traffic around my vehicle by the light of my phone flashlight as darkness fell. My truck and I were at risk of being hit for at least twenty minutes before my arriving son and two kind strangers were able to stop traffic and push my vehicle onto private property. The problem was reproduced and confirmed by the certified Chevy technician who repaired my truck. The component was only inspected from the outside by the service tech who could not see any issues on the outside of the sealed transmission. There was no warning. My vehicle was in drive with my foot on the brake as I sat waiting for the light to change. When the light changed, I took my foot off the brake and depressed the accelerator pedal. The engine revved but there was no movement. I changed the gears from drive to park and back again several time with no effect. The reverse gear still worked but that did not help me in traffic.

It did this twice to me so far and I am concerned about the safety of the vehicle due to the difficulty in steering when the power steering and Stabilitrak shut down. I have not had the vehicle inspected by the dealership/manufacture since I was told it is not a recall item that will be reimbursed and I would be charged the diagnostic.

The power steering failed. Specifically, the Chevrolet dealer tells me the steering gear torque sensor failed. According to the dealer, the torque sensor can't be repaired. The whole steering gear assembly has to be replaced. The cost would be $2,066.29. I will have to pay a return core charge if I want to keep the failed part. Luckily, the steering gear torque sensor failed while I was stopped. However, I had to travel several blocks and make several turns before I could get off the road. Each turn required substantial effort and extra time and turning area. If traffic had been any heavier or going any faster, I could easily have been hit and had a serious accident while I tried to get my truck off the road. I can't imagine how dangerous it would have been if this had failed while I was traveling at a higher rated of speed. The dealer confirmed the torque sensor has failed and i have no power steering. No one has inspected my part yet. There was a recall of 60,000 vehicles in April 2021 of the Chevy Colorado model year one year earlier than my truck, 2015, for the exact same issue. There were no warning before the fail. As I sat idling, I suddenly got a message on the screen that i had a power steering problem and driving would be dangerous. That was the moment at which I had no power steering.

POWER STEERING FAILED COMPLETELY WHILE IN MOTION ON THE INTERSTATE GOING 65 MPH IN GLENWOOD SPRINGS, CO. WAS VERY SCARY AND COULD HAVE CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP TOOK 3 WEEKS TO FIND PROBLEM. THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO WARRANTY. CHEVROLET CORPORATE DOES NOT CARE AT ALL, ACTUALLY ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO GET A HOLD OF ANYONE THERE.

ON NOVEMBER 24TH 2017, WHILE STOPPING TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN, MY 2016 EXTENDED CAB, CHEVROLET COLORADO 4WD TURNED ITSELF OFF. WITH THE BRAKES NOT WORKING AND INTO THE INTERSECTION OF A 4 WAY STOP, I PUT THE GEAR IN PARK TO STOP THE VEHICLE. I RESTARTED AND EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL. NO ACCIDENT AND NO INJURIES. ON NOVEMBER 28, 2017, ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK, WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT IN TRAFFIC ON US /ROUTE 40 IN MARYLAND, MY COLORADO TURNED ITSELF OFF, BRAKES DIDN'T WORK, RESULTING IN REAR ENDING THE VEHICLE STOPPED IN FRONT OF ME. THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK, THE AIR BAGS DID NOT WORK (DID NOT DEPLOY). THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO MY COLORADO, AND I HAVE CHEST BONE (STERNUM) INJURIES.

I have asthma and it is controlled by medication when needed. Recently I have had a lot more incidents of breathing difficulty since I purchased my vehicle. It was during one of these episodes that my wife noticed an odor associated with antifreeze. However, there is no moisture in the vehicle and no visible leaks or puddles on the ground. I have detected the same odor when standing near the back of the truck near the tailpipe. Also, I have had to refill the radiator with exactly five gallons of Antifreeze in less than 3000 miles of driving. It was my wife who alerted me to the odor being inside the vehicle and only during times when the heater was running. Since that time I have driven the vehicle only when I can safely leave the heater off, because I cannot be sure it is safe. If I need the heater to defrost, I leave the vehicle. Also, I noticed that when the engine coolant is low, the engine never seems to overheat, and the heater no longer blows hot air. Is this an issue involving only my vehicles and what other health risks are there? The most I have had to add to restore heat is a gallon of coolant.

About three weeks ago my power steering stopped working and the truck said it needed to be serviced, but when I restarted my truck the system started working and continued to work until yesterday. Yesterday it failed and when restarted it pulled hard to the right. This problem seems similar to the one which forced a recall. I have 76,390 miles on my truck. My code reader red: (C0545), and suggested it was possibly the steering wheel torque sensor or the steering wheel torque sensor wiring harness.

THE IGNITION KEY WON'T RELEASE AT TIMES, AND HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR MONTHS NOW. THE ENGINE WILL TURN OFF, BUT SOME ACCESSORIES REMAIN ON. SOMETIMES I CAN FIDDLE WITH THE KEY OR THE SHIFT LEVER, BUT IN A WORSE CASE I NEED TO DISCONNECT A BATTERY CABLE, TAKE THE KEY OUT, AND RECONNECT THE BATTERY. A DEALER EXAMINATION SAID IT WAS SOME KIND OF SWITCH MALFUNCTIONING AND IT WOULD COST OVER $300. GM/CHEVROLET ONLY OFFERED $10 REDUCTION. MANY PEOPLE APPARENTLY ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM.
