⚠ Park outside — urgent recall
NHTSA has flagged 2 recalls on this vehicle as severe (fire risk — park away from structures). Contact a dealer immediately; recall repairs are free.
- SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULECampaign 20V519000 · 27/08/2020Park outside
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2013-2015 Optima and 2014-2015 Sorento vehicles. Brake fluid may leak inside the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU), possibly resulting in an electrical short.
Risk: If the HECU short circuits, there is an increased risk of an engine compartment fire.
Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the HECU for leaking brake fluid and replace the HECU if necessary, free of charge. Owners are advised to park outside and away from other vehicles and structures until the recall repair is completed. The recall began October 20, 2020. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC197.
- SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULECampaign 21V331000 · 10/05/2021Park outside
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2013-2015 Optima and 2014-2015 Sorento vehicles previously recalled under recall 20V-519. Brake fluid may leak inside the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU), possibly resulting in an electrical short.
Risk: An electrical short in the HECU increases the risk of a fire while parked or driving.
Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from other vehicles and structures until the recall repair is completed. Dealers will install a new multi-fuse, and inspect the HECU for leaks, replacing the HECU if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 2, 2021. This recall supersedes previous NHTSA recall number 20V-519. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC212.
- FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGSCampaign 18V907000 · 19/12/2018
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2011-2017 Optima, 2012-2017 Sorento and 2011-2018 Sportage vehicles that previously received an engine replacement under recall number 17V-224, warranty, or the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) Product Improvement Campaign. The high pressure fuel pipe that connects to the fuel pump outlet may have been damaged, misaligned or improperly torqued during the engine replacement procedure, possibly causing a fuel leak.
Risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
Fix: Kia has notified owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pipe, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began January 17, 2019. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC172.

- 12/28/2021· AIR BAGS
Since the beginning of November, 2021, without incidence or prior warning, the airbag warning light came on when the vehicle is started and stays on the entire time the vehicle is on. The vehicle was brought to a KIA dealership on November 18th to diagnose the issue under extended 15 year warranty for two airbag recalls (one for clock spring and the other for ODS sensor). The diagnosis determined that the clock spring and ODS sensor were not causing the warning light to remain on, and the cause was a airbag code B1473, Driver Curtain Airbag Circuit Resistance High, and the dealership stated that it needed a driver side curtain airbag, estimated at $1,800.00, and not covered by warranty. Since this condition results in the airbag warning light to remain lit while the car is on and running, this causes a safety issue in that the driver does not know if the airbag will deploy if needed. Further, there is no way the driver would know if another airbag fault, for example, a front airbag issue, occurs, because the airbag light is already on. This condition poses a serious safety concern and should be addressed by the manufacturer.

Three days after getting my regular oil change , my engine started getting this loud knocking noise and I was not able to speed , I was coming into the freeway when my car suddenly got a loss of power , I checked my vehicle diagnostics and it wasn’t showing anything about the engine no warning or anything when I took it to get seen by a mechanic they told me I had to get my engine replaced

Vehicle was being driven when the engine blew-up and became inoperable. After taking it to a mechanic, they said that the oil had stopped flowing through the engine and caused it to malfunction. There were no lights that appeared on the dashboard warning us of a problem.

THE KIA PAINT ON MY WHITE PEARL KIA SORENTO HAS BEEN PEELING AND RUSTING. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE 2017 AND BEGINNING AT ABOUT 40K MILES. I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW MANY OTHER WHITE KIAS ARE DOING THE SAME THING. THE PATCHES ARE GETTING WORSE AND PEELING IN BIG CHUNKS NOW. MY CAR IS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD AND TOLD BY KIA THIS IS NOT COVERED. I AM DISAPPOINTED IN KIA FOR NOT TAKING FAULT ON CLEARLY CHEAP PAINT PLACED ON ALL WHITE PEARL KIAS.

LEASED A 2015 KIA SORRENTO, IN MY THIRD YEAR OF LEASE, REGULAR OIL CHANGES EVERY 3 MONTHS, HEARD A KNOCKING SOUND IN ENGINE AT APPROX. 35,000 MILES ON MY WAY HOME FROM MY SON'S HOCKEY GAME ON THE HIGHWAY WHICH GOT LOUDER AND LOUDER. TOOK IT TO THE KIA DEALER AND IMMEDIATELY THE SALES PERSON INFORMED ME THAT IT WAS THE CONNECTOR ROD FAILURE WITHOUT EVEN WORKING ON THE CAR. SHOWED KIA ALL MY RECEIPTS FOR OIL CHANGES, WAITED TWO WEEKS TO HEAR BACK FROM THEM, FINALLY I CALLED AND THEY OFFERED TO PAY FOR ENGINE BUT I WOULD BE ON THE HOOK FOR 1200 ON LABOR. NOT SURE WHY I AM ON THE HOOK FOR LABOR ON A FAULTY ENGINE. THEY CLAIMED THERE WAS SLUDGE IN THE ENGINE. LOOKED ONLINE AND SAW A RECALL FOR OPTIMA ENGINE CONNECTING ROD FOR KIA IN WHICH THEY ARE EXTENDING THEIR WARRANTY FROM 100,000 MILES TO 120,000 MILES BECAUSE OF THE SAME CONNECTING ROD PROBLEM. SO THEY KNOW THEY HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THIS PART BUT STILL WANTS ME TO PAY FOR SOME OF THE COST. I DON'T HAVE 1200 TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR, ITS NOW GOING ON 3 WEEKS WITHOUT THE VEHICLE WHILE THEY REVIEW MY CLAIM, NO RENTAL VEHICLE, AND I AM EXPECTED TO PAY ON A LEASE OF A VEHICLE I DON'T HAVE. VEHICLE IS STILL IN REPAIR SHOP.

I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT IN A GRAIN SILO TOWN IN KANSAS (COMING UP ON OAKLEY FROM COLORADO SPRINGS) AND THERE WERE NO CARS AROUND ME. THE WEATHER WASN'T DRASTICALLY CHANGING AND THERE WAS NO ADVERSE WEATHER. SUDDENLY, IT SOUNDS AS THOUGH THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION ON THE TOP OF MY CAR. THE FABRIC PARTITION THAT SEPARATES THE SUNROOF FROM THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR STARTS SHAKING VIOLENTLY IN THE WIND AND THERE WAS SOME GLASS SHARDS THAT FELL INTO THE CAR. IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING THAT THE INCIDENT SCARED BOTH ME AND MY TWO KIDS WHO WERE IN THE CAR WITH ME. I PULLED OVER TO THE CLOSEST GAS STATION AND TOOK A LOOK AT THE DAMAGE (SEEN IN THE PICTURE BELOW). AS I HAD THE REST OF MY ROAD TRIP TO ACCOMPLISH (KANSAS CITY, MO), MY HUSBAND MET ME IN OAKLEY, KS WITH HIS CAR AND WE MADE THE EXCHANGE. I AM A VERY METICULOUS DRIVER WHO INSPECTS EVERYTHING BEFORE A ROAD TRIP: TIRE PRESSURE, WINDOW CRACKS, INTERIOR IS INTACT, DRASTIC CHANGE IN WEATHER ALONG THE TRIP, ETC. I WOULD HAVE NEVER THOUGHT TO LOOK AT THE SUNROOF AND EVEN IF I DID, I'M NOT SURE I WOULD HAVE FOUND ANYTHING. IF I WERE DRIVING ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY I COULD WRITE THIS WHOLE INCIDENT OFF AS MAYBE A STRAY ROCK. HOWEVER, THERE WAS NOTHING AROUND ME.
- 12/23/2024· EXTERIOR LIGHTING
The lights dim way too quickly. HID basically is garbage. Major safety issue since most people can’t afford to be constantly replacing their headlight assemblies.

Lights are very dim, had to put in a brighter lightbulb. All of the sudden today the radio FM/AM Satellite and blue tooth stopped working. 12/22/22 - Driving home the lights stopped working and I was driving in the dark with no lights.
- 12/22/2020· EXTERIOR LIGHTING
LOW BEAM LIGHTS ARE DANGEROUSLY DIM. CONSTANTLY HAVE TO USE HIGH BEAMS WHEN SAFE TO DO SO. HAVE TO CHANGE THEM EVERY SIX MONTHS OR SO BECAUSE THEY ONE OR THE OTHER STOPS WORKING. HAVE HAD IT CHECKED OUT FOR THIS PROBLEM AND THEY CANNOT FIND AN ISSUE. MAY HAVE TO TRADE THIS CAR IN DUE TO THIS DANGEROUS SITUATION. VERY FRUSTRATING!
- 12/22/2019· VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
MY SON WAS PULLED OVER AND THE OFFICER SAID THERE WERE NO OPERATING REAR LIGHTS. NOTICED THAT YOU HAVE TO TURN THEM ON AND OFF TO COME ON. THEN ON ANOTHER DAY THERE WERE NO BRAKES GETS LIGHTS EITHER. I INFORMED SOUTHWEST KIA MESQUITE OF THE PROBLEM. THEY SAID THAT IT WAS THE LIGHT SWITCH BECAUSE ONE OF THEIR OTHER MODELS HAVE THE SAME ISSUE AND THERE WAS A RECALL ON THAT MODEL. THEY CHARGED ME TO FIX THIS SAYING ALTHOUGH IT WAS RECALLED IN THEIR OTHER MODEL THE SORENTO WAS NOT RECALLED. AFTER THEY INSTALLED THEY SAID I SHOULD HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH THE LIGHTS AND BRAKE LIGHTS. THEY EVEN DID ANOTHER INSEPCTION A WEEK OR SO LATER (12/20/2019) SAYING THAT MY CAR WAS SAFE TO TRAVEL AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE. WHILE ON THE ROAD TRIP WITH MY FAMILY WE NOTICED THAT THE TWO MAIN BRAKE LIGHTS WERE NOT WORKING AND THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT WORKING. WE TRIED TURNING LIGHTS ON AND OFF AND THEY STILL DIDNT WORK. KIA HAS PLACED MY FAMILY IN DANGER. WE ARE OUT OF STATE AND HAVE NO WAY OF GETTING THE CAR BACK TO TEXAS SAFELY. KIA HAS EXHAUSTED ALL OF MY MONEY AND THEY HAVE NOT FIXED ANYTHING. THE CAR IS UNSAFE. I GOOGLED AND FOUND THATB A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE DRIVING AROUND WITH KIA'S WITH NO BRAKE LIGHTS. THEY WONT OWN UP THAT SOMETHING IS WRING WITH THE SORENTO, CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM, BACK AND BRAKE LIGHTS. MY REAR LIGHTS SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. IS KIA WAITING FOR FATALITIES BEFORE THEY DEAL WITH THIS SAFETY ISSUES WITH THE SORENTO? HOW MUCCH LONGER ARE THEY GOING TO CONTINUE TO RIP PEOPLE OFF AND LEAVE THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES UNSAFE? I TRANSPORT KIDS AS I AM A CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES CASEWORKER AND THIS VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE FOR ANYONE. ITS UNFORTUNATE THAT KIA HAS EXHAUSTED ALL OF MY FUNDS THAT I CAN'T RENT NOR GET ANOTHER CAR WHILE OUT OF STATE FOR CHRISTMAS STUCK ON THE ROAD.

The running lights on the front and rear drivers side work half of the time, the plate light seems to turn off when they do. They'll come on for a split second and then go out, or on a good day they'll stay on. Seems like a short in the wiring. It could be a safety issue at night!!!

While operating my vehicle I experienced sluggishness and power failure. Sorento became disabled on main road while driving to work. Vehicle was towed to the closest Kia dealership where they performed a diagnostic test. Maintenance test and Parts Department revealed the that the power shortage was possibly from a Brake fluid leakage inside the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU). This also caused the engine to seize and the only remedy was a new engine. He also stated that the repair was not covered under warranty due to the open recall that was not completed. I did explain to the repair center that I was never made aware of any on going recalls from the dealer where I purchased the vehicle either by mail, phone call or email as well as from Kia corporate. The parts department provided me with the contact information for Kia Headquarters to assist me. Kia Headquarters provided me with a case number 14188680 and that they would contact the dealer and get back to me. After a couple days with no response, I called back with the case number, however, I got a new customer service rep. who said that nothing has been completed yet. This went on for a couple weeks with me calling to try to get updates and contacting the dealership parts department who said that their headquarters has not contacted the dealership and that according to their policy with Kia corporate the replacement of the engine would be at my expense. The estimated cost was quoted at about $8,000.00 dollars. I told the parts department at the dealership that I did not understand, how could I be responsible if the engine was a defect and I received no word of a recall from Kia. The parts department response was that is Kia Headquarters policy that they recall had to be completed or Kia was not responsible.

- 12/12/2021· POWER TRAIN,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE
Upon accelerating causes a lot of exhaust smoke and bogs down so I can’t get out of the way and others behind me cannot see a thing. Two Kia dealerships refused assistance. The first after I called 12/3 to report that my vehicle issue made additional hazard involving a semi (thank goodness no one wreaked) and it was still smoking and smelled as if something was burning. The other telling me it would be six months at least. The warning dashboard lights did not trigger during or after incidents. The only light that came on ever was the oil light the prior weekend. I had the oil changed, filters replaced as well as the headlights for the third time. Around 44k miles when issues started and escalated quickly. Other problems reported to Arapaho Kia a few years ago consisted of back passenger door not latching. Someone flagged me down on the highway as I had my daughter in her car seat on that side. No warning lights triggered, dealership unable to duplicate issue. Steering control keys controlling opposite functions or not working intermittently. Was told steering control harness needed replacement. Think that was at 18k miles but not sure. Did not have replaced at that time as it mainly affected radio functions hands free calling did stop working. I usually didn’t make calls in the car anyway. I was left with no other choice but to trade the vehicle in before something really bad happened or it self destructed leaving me without out a car still paying on. I could not be without a car for six months as Peak Kia quoted timeframe. Untimely fixing of recall on vehicle likely manifesting these other issues and causing additional damage to vehicle.

THIS KIA WAS RENTED FROM ENTERPRISE DUE TO MY CAR BEING IN THE SHOP. I FOUND STEERING PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR AS WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM ALREADY WHICH I FOUND ODD AS THIS IS SUPPOSEDLY A BRAND NEW VEHICLE. NOT ONLY THAT IT RACES INTERMITTENTLY SOMETIMES MORE THAN 10 MILES OR SO & AT OTHER IT SLOWS DOWN EVEN THOUGH THE GAS PEDAL IS BEING PRESSED ON. ON DECEMBER 1, 2014 I WAS DRIVING HOME AFTER VISITING A FRIEND WHO WAS RETURNING TO OHIO FOR COLLEGE. FOLLOWING THE ROAD, I HAD TO CROSS SOME RAILROAD TRACKS TO AS I WAS VEERING SLIGHTLY LEFT. THIS KIA STEERING LOCKED & ACCELERATED TO APPROXIMATELY 40 OR SO MILES, WENT OFF THE RAILROAD TRACKS & HIT THE MENTAL POSTS HOLDING A BILLBOARD. I WAS NOT DRINKING AT ALL & WAS WEARING MY SEATBELT. AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY & DUE TO SEATBELT, MY BACK IS BROKEN & RECEIVED MAJOR LACERATIONS TO MY RIGHT EYE & FACE. I WAS TRANSPORTED TO 2 TRAUMA UNITS. THIS KIA SORENTO HAS HAD STEERING & POWER PROBLEMS SINCE 2013 AND UNFORTUNATE FOR ME, I THOUGHT THESE ISSUES WERE FIXED & REDESIGNED. *TR....UPDATED 06/21/17 *BF UPDATED 9/8/2017*CN

Problem: exploding panoramic sunroof in KIA Sorento 2015 I was driving on a smooth, paved two-lane road in a rural area. No cars were nearby (thankfully). car Internal temp: 64. outside external temp: 64 (I specifically made note of this because I thought a temperature differential could explain the explosion, but my car has a digital readout of both temperatures, and they matched exactly.) Sunroof was closed at the time, and I was not trying to open/close it. When the sunroof exploded, I heard a deafening, "exploding" sound. Initially, I thought my car had been shot by a bullet, based on the sound. The loud noise caused me to swerve and quickly brake. Fortunately, there were no vehicles nearby with which I could collide due to my erratic reaction. I pulled to the side of the road and got out to look. Initially, I did not see any damage, but eventually, I climbed onto my seat and saw my sunroof had exploded up and outwards (indicating nothing had entered the car from the outside). Photo available. I was on a road which bisects two agricultural fields (no nearby objects could have fallen or been thrown on my sunroof to cause damage.) The cause remains unknown, but I can rule out foreign objects hitting my car and temperature differential. I drove the car to the KIA dealer and left it there for a week to have it repaired by KIA representatives. Repair invoice available. No other representatives inspected the car. There was no warning of anything - no lights, no message, no bell, just a sudden, incredibly loud noise. My canvas sun shield was closed at the time, and this prevented glass from making contact with my body, but there was a great deal of glass on the top of the sun shield.

It has been regularly serviced/maintained since. In Nov 2018 the AWD would not engage during a snowstorm, I was left stranded and had to be towed to the Dealership. The AWD coupler needed to be replaced. October 1, 2021, the car was inspected and passed with no major issues. November 6, 2021, the car would not start. It was jump started and brought to a local Auto Repair Facility where I was advised it needed a new battery. New battery installed and on November 8, 2021, the car would not start. I returned to the same facility & had them check the battery, alternator and starter. All was fine. They recommended I return to Healy KIA, Newburgh, NY, and have them check the computer board. December 1, 2021, Healy KIA informed me that the head gasket was shot and that I needed an engine rebuild. I questioned this as the car was only 5 years old, I only drive the car locally, and that I have done no extensive travel in over 2 years since Covid-19. Healy KIA never offered to replace the engine, only the rebuild for $11K. I contacted KIA Corporate on December 2, 2021 to file a concern (Case #14515621) and was advised by that Rep I was out of warrantee, admitted there had been engine recalls in the past, but a Manager would review my case and call me w/in 2-3 business days. To date, no return call. I began calling KIA(800)333-4542 for these past 3 days & the automated phone system either dropped the call or transferred me to Road Side Assistance. December 8, 2021, I finally got through to another KIA Rep, who confirmed my case number and stated my case was still under review awaiting verifying information from Healy Kia confirming the damage and the estimate. I advised the KIA Rep that I had a copy of that estimate so he instructed me to upload this information at www.KIA.com. Ironically, the case number KIA provided, my name/email is invalid according to the KIA website. I need your help and guidance. Please advise. Thank you!

I woke up this morning to discover that a foot long chunk of my Kia Sorento SX-L's pearl white paint had de-laminated and peeled off the driver's side front door pillar. I've come to find out this is a common due to a paint defect. I'm reporting this per instructions from other Kia owners with the issue.

Sudden engine failure. Upon inspecting the vehicle Kia mechanic concluded engine failure is due to rod bearing wear, which isn't part of the engine failure recall. Thus customer is responsible for all expense in full.

The engine failed and is available for inspection. My daughters and my safety were put at risk when trying to accelerate onto the interstate on ramp and was slow to do so. The car never made it to the speed limit and actually started slowing down. When trying to speed up it started making a knocking sound which ended up leaving us stranded on the side of the interstate on Easter Sunday, so there was more than the normal traffic. The engine light or any other warning lights came on before this happened. The engine was inspected by a Kia service center. And as this was a mechanical issue, the insurance would not do anything.

The contact's mother owns a 2015 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing an abnormal oil consumption. The contact stated that the vehicle consumed three quarts of oil after driving 367 miles. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who informed the contact that the vehicle could be experiencing an internal oil leak. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, where an oil consumption test was performed. The dealer informed the contact to come back after 300 miles. Additionally, the contact stated that the air bag warning light was illuminated, and the front passenger's side seat belt pretensioner failed to operate as intended. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 96,000.

Always noticed little chips on my hood then at about 65000 miles my paint just started peeling right off. So bad that I can’t wash my car or the paint will keep peeling. My auto insurance called it delamanation and said it wasn’t painted properly therefore they won’t cover it. Kia will not acknowledge to me that there is a problem, said my warranty on paint has expired. My color is pearl white and I see other white Kias all over doing the same thing. Also Hyundai’s. If you look online you will see LOTS of stories and complaints regarding this problem. Kia should be held accountable and recall this!

HEADING HOME ON THE HIGHWAY AND IT SHUT DOWN AND I COASTED IT OFF THE ROAD. WE DISCOVERED THERE WAS NO OIL IN IT BUT HAD NO OIL LIGHT WARNING OR ANY OTHER SIGNS IT WAS LOW ON OIL. THE OIL HAD BEEN CHANGED A FEW MONTHS BEFORE AND WAS DUE TO BE CHANGED IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS. NOW MY KIA NEEDS AN ENGINE REPLACEMENT THAT I CAN'T AFFORD AND SINCE I PURCHASED IT USED IT IS NO LONGER UNDER THE KIA WARRANTY. I'M MAKING PAYMENTS ON A VEHICLE THAT I CAN'T DRIVE AND I SEE NO REASON THAT THE OIL SHOULD HAVE BEEN EMPTY ESPECIALLY WITH NO WARNING LIGHT.

I am unable to open the right rear door of my 2015 Kia Sorento from the outside. The child safety lock is engaged and thus I am unable to open that door from the inside. All other doors work correctly. This information has been confirmed by a Kia dealer service department.
