Risk: Fuel pump failure can cause an engine stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will replace the high-pressure fuel pump, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on January 14, 2022. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
- ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE (EGR VALVE)Campaign 18V755000 · 25/10/2018
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d and 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. If the EGR cooler leaks internally, the coolant can mix with diesel engine soot. The high EGR temperatures may result in these particles possibly smoldering and melting the intake manifold.
Risk: The melting intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.
Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the EGR cooler as necessary. If a leak has already occurred, the engine intake manifold will also be replaced. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began May 13, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
- AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULECampaign 16V683000 · 21/09/2016
BMW of North America, LLC. (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2015 BMW X3 sDrive28i, X3 xDrive28i, X3 xDrive35i, X3 xDrive28d, X4 xDrive28i and X4 xDrive35i vehicles, and model year 2014-2015 X5 xDrive35i, X5 sDrive35i, X5 xDrive50i, and 2014 X5 xDrive35d vehicles. The HPFP failed and left my child and me dead in the water, stalled in the middle lane of a 50mph street for a half hour, nearly getting hit several times (two other vehicles crashed behind us trying to avoid us). Eventually a Sheriff helped us get the vehicle out of the road and into a nearby parking lot to wait for the tow truck. After we got to the parking lot, the Sheriff got another radio call and left without taking information or referring to a report or report number. This part has an open recall 21V-586, but both the local BMW dealership and BMW NA refuse to repair my vehicle (withou paying $18k), saying my VIN is not a part of the recall, despite my vehicle being the same engine within the production time, and my problem being exactly what was described in the recall. The pump failure has been confirmed by a crank-no-start condition, error code for low fuel rail pressure, and finding metal shavings in the fuel metering valve on the fuel pump. I am seeking assistance to be included in the recall that already exists and am frustrated to have been turned away when my vehicle meets all the criteria listed on the recall document. All of my correspondence with BMW was by telephone, so I do not have emails to attach below.

The car currently has 28,899 miles to date. Mid November 2023, the dashboard indicated that there was a default with the safety system. I took the car to the authorized service center and their diagnostics indicated as follows: Faulty crash safety module. The recommendation was to replace and program ACSM control unit. Since this was a matter of my personal safety I had to pay $2100 to fix it. The second issue was the sunroof not closing. The diagnostic found the following problems: excessive corrosion on sunroof cassette it to fail ( water entering the sunroof).

WHILE DRIVING WITH MY WIFE AND BOTH KIDS BACK FROM BRUNCH SUNDAY EARLY AFTERNOON - THE LEFT REAR DOOR OPENED ON ITS OWN. IT WAS FULLY CLOSED PREVIOUSLY AND ABOUT A MILE OR TWO DOWN THE ROAD IT POPPED OPEN AND BECAME AJAR WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH. THE CAR INDICATED A DOOR WAS OPEN. I HAD PERSONALLY CLOSED THE DOOR AND AM SURE THAT IT WASN'T OPEN WHEN I STARTED DRIVING, THE CAR WOULD HAVE NOTIFIED ME ANYWAY. I PULLED OVER IN A PARKING LOT AND TOOK PHOTOS WHICH I'VE SENT TO BMW. MY DAUGHTER IN THE BACK SEAT WAS STRAPPED INTO A CAR SEAT WITH 5-POINT HARNESS AND SEPARATE ARM RESTS. SHE SAYS SHE DID NOT TOUCH THE DOOR IN ANY WAY TO TRIGGER THE INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE IS A 2015 X5 35D THAT I HAVE OWNED FOR ABOUT A WEEK AND A HALF. *TR

Engine stalled at low speed. Was able to restart engine. Check engine light was on so was able to drive it to dealer. Dealer determined it was hpfp failure, with metal shards in fuel line, so entire fuel system replaced (injectors, lines, hpfp, etc). Hpfp was replaced with the same model that failed, just a new one. A while later, engine stalled again at low speed. No check engine light but was able to restart engine. Dealer notified of stall post-fix of entire fuel system. A while later engine stalled a 3rd time while driving around 40 mph. No check engine light Was advised that there was a recall for a newly designed hpfp but not in stock at dealer yet. Eventually had the newly redesigned hpfp installed under recall. A few weeks later, experienced another stall while idling at a red light. Amazingly was able to get a real-time video of the engine stalling and shutting off. No check engine light. Was unable to restart engine after multiple tries but engine finally fired up on the 5th or 6th or 7th attempt at restarting. Was able to pull over to the side of the road and notified dealer that I experienced another engine stall after installation of the newly designed recalled hp fuel pump.. Took the car into the dealer and showed them the real Time video of my engine stalling and dealer sent diagnostics to BMW North America but Was advised that BMW engineers were unable to replicate or to find the problem that caused the engine stall. Full credit to local BMW dealer that has always tried their best to help me find and fix the problem but the engine stalling randomly is a life or death kind of malfunction. After 4 engine stalls including after a replacement of a recalled brand new design part, I'm hoping BMW North America can work with me towards a solution and not have to wait till a catastrophic accident before a remedy is offered.

THE VEHICLE STARTED TO COLLECT WATER WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE IN THE CAR. IT WAS ONLY UNTIL A UNNOTICEABLE NOISE CAME FROM THE REAR OF THE CAR. I INSPECTED IT AND THE REAR AREA WAS SOAKED WITH WATER. SO BMW THINKS IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO STORE ALOT OF ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT IN THE REAR WERE THE WATER WAS. THEY FIRST CLAIMED THAT IT WAS POSSIBLY CLOGGED DRAINS AND THAT IF THEY WERE CLOGGED, THAT NOTHING WOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE IT WAS "AN OUTSIDE FORCE". AFTER THE INSPECTION, THEY TELL ME THAT A LEAK WAS DISCOVERED AND THAT IT WAS FIXED. BUT NOTHING WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE WATER GOT INTO THE CAR. THEY HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH OLDER MODELS AND DUE TO IT BEING A BAD DESIGN OF THE CAR, REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT IT WAS THEIR PROBLEM. I READ THAT THERE WAS A SETTLEMENT BACK IN 2010 AREA AND THAT THEY WERE FOUND LIABLE. THE CAR HAS NOT CHANGED SINCE THEN AND THEY ARE STILL USING THE FLAWED CAR DESIGN IN THE X5. I WAS TOLD THAT TO AVOID FURTHER LEAKS, THAT I SHOULD NOT PARK IT ANYWHERE NEAR TREES OR BUSHES AND PREFERABLY INSIDE. A CAR IN THE 21ST CENTURY SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BE KEPT INSIDE TO PREVENT LEAKS FROM OCCURRING. A LOT OF PEOPLE DONT HAVE THE PRIVILEGE TO KEEP THEIR CAR IN A GARAGE 24/7. SOME PEOPLE HAVE TO USE THEIR CARS ON A DAILY BASIS.

My vehicle was part of a recall No. 21V-586. I was told I have metal shavings in the fuel system coming from the high pressure fuel pump and given a price to repair of $17,200.00. I first looked on line and found my make, model and year was part of a recall for this exact same issue I informed the dealership of the recall. The contacted BMW and they stated they would not cover the repairs because now they are saying it was bad fuel. I stated if bad fuel then we treat it and nothing should be wrong with the pump. This went on for a couple week then I requested a BMW come to the dealership to inspect. After this visit it was agreed they would replace the high pressure fuel pump and nothing else. After fighting them and telling them if the metal shavings in the system is from a recalled part then why are they not correcting the entire issue. I then received an email later with repairs listed and it show hoses and filters and new fuel and no charge. I assumed they replace the entire fuel system to get rid of the metal shavings. I went pick up the vehicle and was told that there are still metal shavings in the system to be careful as the vehicle may shut off without warning. I asked how BMW could give a car back that they did not fix the problem and may cause a crash. They had no answer. I now have a car that I really can't drive and has no value. I have had to purchase another car thus incurred additional and unwanted expense due to BMW's refusal to correct a manufacturer's defect. Why is it my responsibility to pay to have the metal shavings from their recalled fuel pump removed from the fuel system. If they can't fix the problem then I should be reimbursed for the car's value by BMW and not have it available to be on the road and cause an unnecessary accident. I am asking for your help in dealing with BMW to rectify this matter as they are unwilling to deal with me. The fuel pump catastrophically failed and caused the vehicle to suddenly break down (engine stall) while driving 65 mph on the freeway. There is metal in the system according to the mechanic. Numerous parts will need to be replaced and in essence the car no longer has value because of the number and severity of issues experienced. Mileage is 160,000. I see that two recalls have been put forth for similar issues for BMW X5’s produced around the same time as mine (Campaign IDs 21V586000 and 21V907000) but the recalls for some reason don’t cover my specific VIN. I think the recalls should also cover my VIN.

On 11/26/2025, I was driving on the NJ Parkway, Southbound, in the left lane. The Drivetrain Malfunctioned Warning Light came on and within second my car began loosing power. I did not notice any smells. My car stalled as I stopped along the left side of the roadway. I did not have time to maneuver safely to the right, onto the shoulder of the roadway. I maneuvered my vehicle to the left side of the road. My car was pinned against the guardrail to avoid being struck by southbound vehicles. The warning light disappeared. I attempted to restart my car, it sputtered a few time with black smoke coming out of the exhaust. I called 911 and State Police Responded to protect my vehicle from being struck. About an hour later, a tow truck responded and my vehicle was towed to the BMW Dealership, 500 Route 37, Eaton Town, NJ. I believe this catastrophic failure is connected to my vehicles EGR’s system. I had my vehicle serviced at Sterling BMW, Sterling, VA, in early 2025. During that visit I was told that my vehicle’s Auxiliary EGR cooler needed to be replaced. In October 2025, I took my vehicle to BMW of Westbrook, Maine, after I received a notice from BMW that they had extended the warranty on my Auxiliary EGR Cooler and it could be replaced if needed. I provided the Dealership with the information that Sterling BMW provided me about the need to have my Auxiliary EGR cooler replaced. Westbrook BMW examined my car and said there was nothing wrong the my Auxiliary EGR cooler. My vehicle will be looked at tomorrow by Eaton Town BMW. I suspect, I will be told the failure will be related to the EGR system.

IN JANUARY 2015, I BOUGHT A BMW X5 35D TWUN TURBO (N57T ENGINE) OE EQUIPPED WITH A BOSCH HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP ("HPFP") PART #0445010667. TWO WEEKS AGO, I WAS DRIVING AT 75 MPH IN THE 4TH LANE OF A 6 LANE HIGHWAY WHEN MY CAR JERKED AND A "DRIVE TRAIN MALFUNCTION" MESSAGE CAME ON THE SCREEN. I WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER THINKING THIS WOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY - THE CAR IS LESS THAN 3 YEARS OLD! I'M TOLD THAT THERE WAS A "CATASTROPHIC FAILURE" OF THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP THAT I DID NOT CAUSE, HAD NO WARNING OF AND COULD NOT HAVE PREVENTED. THAT FAILURE CAUSED METAL SHAVINGS TO BREAK OFF, DAMAGE THE FUEL INJECTORS AND SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM REQUIRING REPLACEMENT AT THE COST OF $15,000! I WAS THEN TOLD THAT MY CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY BECAUSE OF THE MILEAGE (I DRIVE MY SONS TO LOTS OF BASEBALL TOURNAMENTS SO I AM OVER 50K MILES AFTER THIS SUMMER). I ASKED BMW NA TO STAND BEHIND THEIR VEHICLE AND REPAIR IT UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE NO 2.5 YEAR OLD VEHICLE, ESPECIALLY A BMW, SHOULD HAVE THIS HAPPEN TO IT. INDEED, A PUMP FAILURE, NO MATTER HOW CATASTROPHIC, SHOULD NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. THERE ARE LAWSUITS OUT THERE OVER THESE HPFPS AND BMW HAS RECALLED OVER 150,000 VEHICLES AND EXTENDED THE WARRANTIES ON MANY OF THE HPFPS TO 120K, BUT APPARENTLY NOT MINE, EVEN THOUGH IT EXPERIENCED THE SAME TYPE OF FAILURE, IS MADE BY THE SAME COMPANY (BOSCH) AND OUT OF THE SAME MATERIAL (DIFFERENT PART NUMBER). BMW HAS OFFERED TO FIX IT AT WARRANTY COST AND CONTRIBUTE 50%, BUT THAT IS STILL OVER $6,000 OR ROUGHLY 10% OF THE ORIGINAL COST OF THE VEHICLE. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS AS IT IS DANGEROUS AND CONSUMERS NEED TO BE AWARE THAT THIS IS STILL HAPPENING.

The contact owns a 2015 BMW X5. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, a low coolant message was displayed on the instrument panel. The vehicle was initially taken to an independent mechanic where the water pump was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was then taken to a dealer where it was recommended that the head gasket be replaced; however, the dealer could not guarantee that the repair would fix the vehicle. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic where another diagnostic test was performed. The mechanic discovered a coolant leak inside the EGR module and linked the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V907000 (Fuel System, Diesel). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000.

There was a recall on my 2013 BMW in January 2022. In the recall letter it was mentioned that the they would notify me when the recall repairs were available. I called my local BMW service center in July 2022 to ask if the part was available. It was stated that the part was not available. The representative stated what was in the recall letter, which was. "this time. We will notify you with a follow-up letter as soon as we are able to perform this safety recall. What could happen? The engine’s Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Cooler could develop an internal leak. Cooling fluid could mix with typical diesel engine soot deposits. With high temperatures normally present in the EGR module, this might result in smoldering particles. In some cases, these particles could contact the engine intake manifold and create small holes due to melting. If this occurs, it would increase the risk of a fire. Your vehicle may be experiencing this issue if one or more of the following occurs; a reduction in engine power, a warning symbol indicating a loss of engine coolant, an unpleasant odor (e.g., exhaust) and/or an unusual noise from the engine. If this occurs, carefully move away from traffic and pull over to a safe location as soon as possible. All occupants should carefully exit the vehicle and move to a safe location away from traffic. Do not continue to drive the vehicle. SAMPLE If you are not the only driver of this vehicle, please advise all other drivers and passengers of this important information." My daughter was driving the car an almost home when she started to smell burning and minutes later saw smoke and flames. She got out of the call and called 911. The care was a total loss, due to this recall and BMW is taking no responsibility for the loss. She is still recovering from the incident and I would like to take action against BMW. I have the police and fire department report from the town of MIlton.

The vehicle started running rough, starting rough, and idling high. The diagnostic codes indicated a failure of the high-pressure fuel pump. BMW has recalled these in all of the 2014-2018 diesel engines, but it appears the high-pressure fuel pumps are also failing in the gasoline engines, of which I own.

Started my car like normal and ran for 30 seconds after leaving Walmart after I picked up a few things then the car shut off out of no where.. attempted to start again and the car tried to turn over then even stopped doing that after a few attempts.. I had the car towed to my home.. my husband then inspected the vehicle and the high pressure fuel pump has failed causing my engine to lock up.. I have maintained this vehicle like I should because I loved my car and my husband is a mechanic.. This vehicle only with 127000.. this should of not happened I have read bmw is going to recall this but when my vin is ran nothing shows up.. I owe on this vehicle still and it really has put me in a bind financially with having to miss work and having to find other transportation.. this is ridiculous. I got no warning lights or any noise warnings.

Multiple fuel injector malfunction codes have been displayed by the vehicle repeatedly over the course of the last 10k miles. These malfunctions are causing the Malfunction Indicator Light to illuminate and remain on. This issue is documented to affect multiple vehicles with the same engine/injectors. BMW has provided an extended warranty for some vehicles with this engine/injector combination. However not all vehicles with this engine/injectors are covered by the warranty extension. This issue has cause noticeably lower fuel milage as well as random violent jerking while leaving from a stop, accelerating, and traveling at speed. A multiple injector failure while in motion has a potential to create a safety issue for the occupants of the affected vehicle and those of surrounding vehicles if the vehicle suddenly looses power or drive at highway speed.

Vehicle stalled in the middle of the road when in drive mode displaying "Drivetrain Malfunction". Couldn't start the engine or shift the gear. Vehicle was at the dealership one week before the incident for 'Drivetrain Malfunction'. Fixed bad fuel injector and was tested. My safety and safety of others was at risk if it had happened at higher speed. Suspecting fuel pump failure. Vehicle is with the dealer and the component should be available for inspection.

When I research by your making model, it shows that there are multiple safety recalls for my vehicle. However, when I put in my license plate urban number, it says that there is zero, because I believe that that is some sort of redacted information that’s not true because my vehicle continues to have concerning safety issues and engine issues and the manufacture is refusing to repair. Also, there are suspension issues and under body, rest, and emissions issues that my state Ohio does not test I purchase this vehicle from Carvana and I believe they shipped the vehicle to a state that does not require a mission passing, because that would have been a flag for my vehicle, and it was very difficult for me to register my vehicle and my state due to a clouded title but it’s very hard for me to get information from dealerships because they don’t want to perform the work at cost as a service customer service, and then the seller, of course is hiding this information I need oversight, or some sort of enforcement how I can take my vehicle somewhere and have it inspected for safety, and then enforce the recalls and enforce the warranties that are on them because as I mentioned, I am not I’m getting out Bro blocked and I don’t wanna take accountability and responsibility. I did have a stop at a muffler shop and they said that my underbody is is the scripture is not installed properly, and there are things that are detach to avoid the emissions smoke and those are hidden from the seller I am a nervous Buyer. This is my first time having a vehicle such as this and I believe I have a lemonade and sweet lemon. How can I get it? Inspected it inspected.

I HAVE A 2015 X5 DIESEL. THE CAR RECENTLY HAD CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON. DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS METAL SHAVINGS IN THE FUEL SYSTEM AND HAD TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE SYSTEM WHICH WOULD HAVE COST ME $12000 OR MORE. WHILE I'M HAPPY IT'S COVERED UNDER WARRANTY IT SEEMS THAT THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM AND MANY HAVE REPORTED THIS ISSUE. I DON'T KNOW HOW METAL SHAVINGS END UP IN THE FUEL SYSTEM. I'M WORRIED THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT CAN HAPPEN AGAIN AND IF IT'S OUTSIDE WARRANTY THEN BMW WILL NOT REPLACE IT. BMW NEED TO EXTEND WARRANTY ON THIS COMPONENT. ALSO METAL SHAVINGS IN THE FUEL INJECTORS CAN CAUSE SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO CAR AND IS UNSAFE. SOME HAVE COMPLAINED THAT SMOKE WAS EMANATING FROM THE CAR WHEN THIS HAPPENED.

I am also aware that this extension applies to F10 (535d XDrive Sedan) using the same N57T Engine that my 2015 X5 xDrive 35d has. I am asking for the model year dates to be reviewed and model year 2015 vehicles added to the list as I have faulty injectors that should be covered as well.

My wife was driving with my kids on the highway here in San Diego. When the vehicle stalled and luckily she was near the shoulder and was able to pull over. We took it to the shop and they stated it was a fuel pump failure. I have never had a car do this it was crazy dangerous for my kids and my wife. I have read so many complaints on this and yet bmw will take no fault for this. Then they want to give me a repair bill of 17k because when these fuel pumps fail they destroy the whole fuel system that touches diesel needs to repaired. I am so upset this is crazy that’s this legal to produce a car like this and there is not a class action lawsuit.
