- FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMPCampaign 21V586000 · 29/07/2021
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2014-2018 328d, 328d xDrive, X5 xDrive35d, 2014-2016 535d, 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, and 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d vehicles. The high-pressure fuel pump may fail.
Risk: Fuel pump failure can cause an engine stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.

- ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE (EGR VALVE)Campaign 18V755000 · 25/10/2018
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d and 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. If the EGR cooler leaks internally, the coolant can mix with diesel engine soot. The high EGR temperatures may result in these particles possibly smoldering and melting the intake manifold.
Risk: The melting intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.
Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the EGR cooler as necessary. If a leak has already occurred, the engine intake manifold will also be replaced. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began May 13, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

- 12/28/2022· FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL
The contact owned a 2015 BMW X3. The contact had received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V907000 (Fuel System, Diesel). The contact stated that unknown warning lights were intermittently illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer for the recall repair, and the contact was made aware of additional unknown failures and repairs that were needed. The recall repair was completed, and the vehicle was then traded in. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 96,000.
- 12/23/2025· ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Our vehicle alerted us to over heating and to pull over immediately. Our car then stopped running. We had it towed and was told there was an issue with the water pump sensor and corrosion issues. They alerted us that there was a recall for these issues on our vehicle. We researched and found this to be true. When I contacted BMW they stated our vin number was not part of the recall but our vehicle match the exact models listed in the recall. We took it to the dealership and they repaired it for $2500 and the reason for the repair was the exact reason for the recall. Spoke with BMW again regarding this and they said if our vin was not on the recall list there was nothing they could do. I would think when your vehicle make and model matches the recall and the issues are the same you would be part of the recall no matter the vin number. I would like for this to be reviewed and see if we can get a reimbursement from bmw for the charges we paid out of pocket for an issue that should have been covered by the recall. The recall form attached is one my friend received who has the exact same car we have. The other documents are the service invoice and verification of our payment. Thank you!
- 12/21/2021· TIRES
Since tires installed on 9/2021, I have been having a worsening vibration noise. I took it to the installer who checked the balance of the wheels and tires and said there were no issues. The vibration continued. I took the car to an independent mechanic who inspected the vehicle. He said it's either the wheel bearings or the tires. The wheel bearings were replaced and I continued to have issues. The mechanic stated that when the vehicle was lifted and they ran the tires, the tires "wobbled". The independent mechanic felt strongly that the tires are defective and recommended returning to the installer for inspection and to correct this.

I WAS ABOUT TO PARK IN A PARKING LOT, DRIVING SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY BETWEEN TWO PARKED CARS. AS I VERY GENTLY PUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE TO STOP, THE CAR JOLTED INTENSELY AND DID NOT STOP. I THEN PRESSED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL HARDER BUT THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO A VERY FAST SPEED. I DROVE THROUGH SOME LARGE PLANTS AND WENT OVER A SIDE WALK AND MADE A SHARP TURN TO AVOID A LARGE BUILDING IN FRONT OF ME. I THEN DROVE THROUGH THE PARKING LOT, MANEUVERING AROUND PARKED CARS, BUILDINGS AND OTHER OBJECTS WHILE THE CAR WAS SPEEDING UP. MY EFFORTS TO SLOW THE CAR DOWN FAILED EVEN AFTER APPLYING AUXILIARY BRAKE. LUCKILY THERE WERE NO PEDESTRIANS OR MOVING CARS WHILE THIS WAS HAPPENING! FINALLY I ENDED UP DRIVING UP A HILL, HOPING THAT THE ELEVATION WOULD STOP THE CAR. INSTEAD DUE TO HIGH SPEED, THE VEHICLE WAS LIFTED UP ABOUT 7 FEET IN THE AIR, HIT A LARGE TREE AND FELL IN THE GROUND WITH MUCH FORCE. I HAVE SOME INJURIES AS A RESULT AND CURRENTLY RECEIVING MEDICAL SUPPORT, HOPING THAT I WILL NOT HAVE PERMANENT HEALTH ISSUES, WHICH I VERY MUCH DOUBT! MY CAR WAS SEVERELY DAMAGED AND WAS TOTALED. IT IS CLEAR AND EVIDENT THAT THERE WAS SOME KIND OF TECHNICAL MALFUNCTION THAT CAUSED THE BRAKE FAILURE AND ACCELERATION. I CONTACTED BMW DEALERSHIP WHERE WE HAD PURCHASED THE CAR AND ALSO WHERE I HAD THE CAR SERVICED ONE MONTH EARLIER! THEY SAID I MUST PAY FOR THE CAR TO BE DELIVERED TO THEIR FACILITY IN ORDER FOR THEM TO EXAMINE THE CAUSE OF BRAKE FAILURE. I REFUSED TO PAY THE HIGH PRICE. IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO MENTION THAT I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR OVER FORTY YEARS AND I CONSIDER MYSELF A VERY CAPABLE DRIVER. I SHOULD ALSO ADD THAT ON THE INTERNET THERE ARE AT LEAST A DOZEN SIMILAR REPORTED CASES OF THIS MODEL. OBVIOUSLY, BMW HAS NEGLECTED TO LOOK INTO THIS MATTER. THEY SHOULD INVESTIGATE THEIR X3 MODELS BEFORE SOMEONE DIES!

NHTSA Recall Number 21V907 It has been over a year since I received notification that there was a recall on my vehicle. I have contacted BMW for this to be repaired several times, but the local dealer always says, "We're sorry, there aren't any parts available for your recall." This recall is NOT being performed in a timely manner and based on my interpretation of the recall notice that keeps appearing in my mailbox every few months, my car may burst into flames at any moment. I'm living in fear. Please help.

I AM WRITING THIS LETTER TO COMPLAINT THE RIDICULOUS EXPERIENCE WITH BMW. I BOUGHT MY BMW X3 2015 BRAND NEW FROM P & W BMW DEALER ON DEC 16, 2014. I DO NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEM UNTIL SIX MONTHS AGO. I WOULD LIKE TO FILE A COMPLAINT ABOUT BMW OF NORTH AMERICA MISSING RECALLS ON MY VEHICLE IN 2015. EGR COOLER FAILED AT 70,000 +/- MILES. WASN'T LEAKING COOLANT INSIDE, BUT WAS LEAKING EXHAUST GASSES INTO CABIN AND WAS NOT COVERED UNDER RECALL CAMPAIGN. BMW COULD NOT PROVIDE NEW UPDATED PART, BUT CHARGED US FOR 'NEW / OLD STYLE UNIT' FOR ABOUT $2600. TRIED TO WORK ISSUE OUT WITH BMW CORP ON EMISSION WARRANTY, BUT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. VEHICLE STILL HAS UNSATISFIED RECALL ON IT FOR EGR COOLER. VEHICLE ALSO IS NOT ISSUING A 'DEF' NOTIFICATION. I HAVE BEEN IN THIS INDUSTRY FOR 44 YEARS AND KNOW THAT THIS VEHICLE SHOULD BE CALLING FOR DEF. I HAVE DEALT WITH THIS IN FORD, PETERBILT AND KENWORTH VEHICLES AND BMW'S SYSTEM IS NOT REPORTING.

MY 2015 BMW X3 HAS LESS THAN 30,000 MILES ON IT AND THE DRIVER DOOR CLOSURE PULL IS DETERIORATING TO A STICKY UNTOUCHABLE MESS. ALSO THE FRONT GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR LEATHER IS PULLING AWAY FROM THE BOX LEAVING AN OPEN GAP. I DID RESEARCH ONLINE AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A RECURRING ISSUE WITH BMW OWNERS. THIS IS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT AND SHOULD BE RECALLED BY BMW TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE INTERIOR. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN GARAGE KEPT TO AVOID HEAT OR SUN DAMAGE. WHEN I CONTACTED MY BMW DEALER I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WOULD RESULT IN 800-1000 REPAIR COST. THE LEATHER INTERIOR IS NOT THE QUALITY I EXPECTED FROM A 48,000 VEHICLE.

High pressure fuel pump Stalling almost caused an accident Yes the problem has been confirmed by BMW BMW has inspected the component Check engine light and drivetrain errors BMW replaced a high pressure fuel pump and fuel system in 2019, see attachment. I was not notifies of the 2021 BMW recall for the high pressure fuel pump. The high pressure fuel pump fail in 2025, see attachment at around 60,000 on the replaced high pressure fuel pump in 2019, less than the original fuel pump. BMW now says they are not going to repair this because of the age and mileage on the car. My position is the mileage on the car is irrelevant. It’s the mileage on the fuel system replaced in 2019. In addition, I was not notified of the recall in 2021and now the question is “ is the high pressure fuel pump replaced in 2019 the same fuel pump replacement part that came with the car when new? Obliviously the 2021 recall may have upgraded the fuel pump to satisfy the recall. If so, that should have been put into my car in 2021. BMW has been very deceiving on answering my questions.

Vehicle suffers from engine 'miss' at cold start / idle, surges / lunges with minor throttle input after driving at lower speeds and accelerating. Has been into dealer for diagnostic and is under 'Extended Warranty' on Diesel High Pressure Fuel Pump. Have had two injectors fail and replaced, boost sensor and pipe, EGR Cooler and intake manifold replaced. NHTSA posted a voluntary recall by BMW on this series of diesel powered X3 for high pressure pump replacement (21V-586) in August 2021. Owners were to be notified by mail in September 2021. Still have not been notified and checking status shows no open recalls. If pump is failing, it would be sending metal into the injectors and fuel piping. Drivetrain malfunction light due to bad EGR valve, which is causing car to run rough. Currently there is safety recall out for the EGR cooler. BMW of Bloomfield diagnosed and recommended EGR valve replacement but cost was excessive at over $1,100. Another BMW specialist (G&T in Jersey City) recommended replacement of EGR valve and cooler due to potential hazardous conditions described in safety recall but said I shouldn't have to pay due to safety recall. So I called BMW dealers in Bloomfield and Springfield both say the "remedy is not available". So am I just supposed to drive the car until it catches fire? This seems reckless so my other option is to pay the mechanics to replace the system that is already subject to a recall.

Engine over heating alert issued and to pull over immediately. We had car towed to bmw dealership who stated it is water pump issue. This is a known issue for this make and model but recall not in effect for our vin. We are having the same issues as stated in recall for water pumps and temperature control issues. Just because our vin number is not associated with this recall they will not repair this issue unless we pay out of pocket. This is a known issue for our make and model of car and should be a covered expense by bmw. I have attached a link to the recall issues. Please review and respond accordingly. Thank you!

The vehicle was towed to a tow lot where it was totaled. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V907000 (Fuel System, Diesel). The dealer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 76,000.

With under 90k miles on the vehicle, the car stalled on the highway. It was later diagnosed as a head gasket leak which caused coolant to leak into the combustion chamber thereby causing the vehicle to lose power. I contacted BMW North America and they did absolutely nothing to address the issue. They did have a computer related recall on the vehicle and I subsequently had it performed at one of their dealers after having to bare the expense of replacing the original engine with a used one as the cost to repair the original engine quoted me by the BMW dealership was in excess of $25,000. Yes you read it correctly the dealer gave me a repair estimate of a seven year old vehicle with nearly 90k on it of $25000. When I subsequently had a used engine installed they refused to do anything in regards to addressing the original engine stall. If your agency does nothing to protect consumers from this type of egregious activity you are of absolutely no use. This failure is catapult to negligence and the fact that the manufacturer took no action to correct its own defect is simply appalling. To have a perfectly maintained vehicle fail at highway speeds with under ninety thousand miles on it and suffer no consequence is not right. They wanted me to spend more to correct their defect than the car was worth in order for them to give me any assistance. Which is why I'm writing you this complaint today. To manufacture a luxury priced suv with as little backing as they have shown should be against the law. We ran high octane fuel at a cost disproportionate to the outcome we suffered, if you will not address this issue please direct me to whatever agency that protects consumers from substandard manufacturers. This car did not live up to the price it was listed for and they should be held to account for that fact.

- 09/03/2021· FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
Earlier this year I was notified by BMW that as of Feb 2022 my car would lose all networking capability due to the phase out of 3G cell towers. The "ConnectedDrive" package would become inoperative, and importantly, would no longer be able to route my travel according to traffic. My heads-up display is currently very well integrated with the navigation system, adaptive cruise control, and safety warning systems. I consider these important safety features. BMW has offered no fix for this. I have suggested to them that simply permitting the driver to tether the navigation (by USB or bluetooth) to a cell phone would solve the problem, but they have refused. The nav system and the BMW cell phone app both prevent tethering, which otherwise is built into the BMW's Windows CE-based operating environment. I don't want to navigate using my phone, as it would be a 3rd display (the one in the dash, the HUD, and the phone). I think one driver with 3 screens would be a safety hazard. Can you help get them to permit tethering to my cell phone once the 3G towers are gone?

Intermittent, but frequent failure of seat occupancy sensor on front passenger seat. Appears to be related to occupancy weight sensor. As sensor is not functioning properly, passenger airbag is being unsafely deactivated, leading to lack of airbag deployment if a front end collision were to occur. Problem is reproducible, but has not been taken to dealer, nor has it been inspected. Warning alert displays, then turns off, then returns frequently while the front passenger seat is occupied.

Fuel pump failed, leading to overheating notice, leading to engine cutting out while driving. I was on one lane road 50 MPH speed limit and able to drift to side of road at around 10-15mph, but if I was on freeway and engine cut and had to get to side of road at 10-15mph it would have been extremely dangerous. Car towed to BMW dealership, replaced water pump, but since 2015 x3 35i not subject to recall , paid out of pocket.

I am filing to write about the timing chain system that's used on the specific engine model the BMW N20. There is a flaw in the design of the system where the plastic timing chain guides break apart and make its way into the engine causing a catastrophic failure to the engine. This happens randomly and without warning. There is nothing the owner can do to prevent it from happening. It's just a matter of time before it happens. There has since been a settlement: Gelis, et al. v. Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft, et al. This reimburses ones that have gone to repair the issue after failure. However, the results of this settlement does not help those who have yet to experience engine failure. As the owner of this vehicle, I am always with anxiety every time I drive the car, not knowing if today will be the day the engine blows up. BMW leaves us with a flawed engine that they now well about but won't issue a recall to fix the problem. It could happen to anybody driving the car where it will fail without warning at any time. I believe this is a safety hazard and an recall should be issued ASAP.

Problem is that the display says "passenger restraint malfunction" -- which brings safety concern. Upon online search, it is likely caused by design flaw of passenger occupancy detector. Here are some reasons why it is design flaw (i.e. not just individual failure) 1. There has been a recall for the same problem for earlier year models (2006-2007 etc). It seems the other years have the same problem (previous recall wasn't a complete fix) 2. There is actually a third party electrical device online that bypass passenger occupancy detector (so that the car thinks passenger seat is occupied all the time) -- which indicates the commonality of the problem because it even became a profitable market.

ALSO FOR SOME REASON THE FUEL PUMP THAT WAS INSTALLED IN THE CAR HAD A CONNECTION BIGGER THAN THE REPLACEMENT PART DATABASE. THE CONNECTORS PLUG SIZE WAS FOR AN 8 CYLINDER VEHICLE AND THE CAR IS ONLY A 4 CYLINDER. THE REPLACEMENT PART WAS DIFFICULT TO FIND DUE TO DIFFERENCE IN SIZE OF CONNECTION PLUG. I received a recall notice from BMW in October 2024 for Recall 24V-608 involving a water pump electrical connector defect in my vehicle. According to the notice, this defect may cause liquid to drip onto the water pump’s electrical connector, potentially leading to a short circuit and, in rare cases, a fire. As of June 2025, nearly eight months later, there is still no remedy available. I have contacted BMW, and although they acknowledge the risk, they have not offered a loaner vehicle or any alternative despite the known fire hazard. I am concerned for my safety and do not feel comfortable continuing to drive a vehicle with a known, unresolved safety defect. I am submitting this complaint because I believe this delay is unreasonable and puts drivers at risk. The vehicle is currently operational, but the issue has not been fixed or properly addressed.
