Recalls (2)

⚠ Park outside — urgent recall

NHTSA has flagged a recall on this vehicle as severe (fire risk — park away from structures). Contact a dealer immediately; recall repairs are free.

  • SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULECampaign 23V651000 · 22/09/2023Park outside

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2015 Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Sonata Hybrid, 2012-2015 Accent, Azera, Veloster, 2013-2015 Elantra Coupe, Santa Fe, 2014-2015 Equus, 2010-2012 Veracruz, 2010-2013 Tucson, 2015 Tucson Fuel Cell, and 2013 Santa Fe Sport vehicles. The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.

Risk: An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the ABS fuse, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 10, 2024 through October 11, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 251.

  • SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:PEDALS AND LINKAGESCampaign 17V769000 · 30/11/2017

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Elantra sedan, coupe and GT vehicles. The brake pedal stopper pad can deteriorate allowing the brake light switch plunger to remain extended when the brake pedal is released. This will allow the brake lights to remain illuminated continuously. It can also allow the shift lever to be moved without depressing the brake pedal, or activate the engine management brake pedal override feature.

Risk: If the brake light switch plunger does not retract as it should when the brake pedal is not being pressed, the brake lights may stay illuminated preventing accurate communication to following vehicles that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. Additionally, if the brake switch plunger is not retracted, then the transmission can be shifted out of PARK without depressing the brake pedal. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake pedal stopper pad, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin February 8, 2018. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 170. This campaign expands recall 16V574.

  • 12/28/2015· STEERING

WHEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS IN A STRAIGHT LINE THE STEERING STICKS. AS THE CAR DRIFTS IN THE LANE IT TAKES AN EXTREME AMOUNT OF PRESSURE TO MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL AND THEN IT OVER CORRECTS. I HAVE TWO ELANTRAS AND THEY BOTH HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING AND SEE PEOPLE HAVE HAD THIS COMPLAINT SINCE 2011.

  • 12/26/2014· ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

  • 12/22/2023· VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE

The piston rings do not seal leading to increased oil consumption and very low oil. My safety was put at risk because when I pulled out into traffic that was going at a high speed I could not accelerate. There was no warning or indication that this was going on prior to this incident. Yes this has been confirmed by a Hyundai dealership and the component was inspected. There was no warning sign before this incident.

  • 12/22/2016· POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE

THE TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR ON MY CAR DIED AFTER ABOUT 78000 MILES AND CAUSED THE CAR TO LOCK UP WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY. STAYED IN 3RD GEAR AND FOR A FEW WEEKS BEFORE WOULD LOCK UP WHILE IN PARK, NEUTRAL, REVERSE AND DRIVE (MOST COMMONLY WHILE IN PARK). THIS NEARLY CAUSED A COUPLE OF ACCIDENTS. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH ELANTRAS DATING ALL THE WAY BACK TO 2007 AND EVEN HAS CONTINUED PAST MY MODEL YEAR (2014) INTO 2015 MODELS. THE DEALERSHIP EVEN REFERRED TO IT ASO A FAULTY RANGE SENSOR WHICH TO ME SEEMS TO IMPLY THAT THEY KNOW ABOUT THIS ISSUE. I COULDN'T SHIFT AND HAD A MORE DIFFICULT TIME SLOWING DOWN AND SPEEDING UP THAN USUAL. THE PART IS RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE BUT THE DIAGNOSTIC FEE PLUS LABOR TO REMOVE AND REPLACE THE FAULTY MECHANICAL PART WAS WELL OVER $150, RESULTING IN A TOTAL BILL OF $210. A PART FAILURE THAT CAUSES THE VEHICLES COMPUTER, TRANSMISSION AND DRIVETRAIN TO LOSE ALL CONNECTION TO ONE ANOTHER CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS, ESPECIALLY WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY. AT FIRST IT HAPPENED ONLY WHILE STATIONARY IN PARK, THE CAR WOULD LOCK UP WHILE SITTING WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING FOR A WHILE. I WOULD TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND RE-ENGAGE THE VEHICLE AND EVERYTHING WOULD OPERATE AS NORMAL. THEN IT OCCURRED WHILE BACKING DOWN THE HILL OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY, LOCKED UP IN REVERSE, I APPLIED THE BRAKES, SET THE PARKING BRAKE AND TURNED OFF THE CAR WHILE STILL IN REVERSE. (I LIVE IN A QUIET SUBDIVISION OF A SMALL TOWN OF 12,000, WHAT IF THIS HAPPENED IN A BUSIER OR MORE HEAVILY POPULATED AREA?) I WAS STILL ABLE TO START THE VEHICLE WHILE IN REVERSE AND SHORTLY THEREAFTER WHILE IN NEUTRAL. THEN TUESDAY MORNING WHILE ON THE INTERSTATE (I-95) THE GEAR AND DRIVE MODE INDICATOR ON THE TACHOMETER WENT BLANK, I WAS STUCK IN 3RD GEAR (LIMP MODE) AND MY CAR ONCE SLOWING DOWN HAD A DIFFICULT TIME ACCELERATING AFTER STOPPING.

  • 12/16/2022· ELECTRICAL SYSTEMFire

I was out running errands and I was taking a break Midway through the day and I had the seat laid back and the car was off the key wasn't even turned forward and I just started to fall asleep when I started feeling something get really hot I opened my eyes and the car was full of thick black smoke so I swung the door open and with all the smoke went out my passenger seat was on fire on the bottom of the seat I burned my hand really bad in the process of trying to put it out which I have some lawyers working on getting me compensated for all this but it seems to have started in the seat heater all of the wires for the seat heater are all melted and you can clearly see how they started to catch the foam on fire I also googled it and there's been a few other cases of people's Hyundai's catching on fire sitting in their driveway and it started in the seat on their cars too I think I'm the first person that's actually been hurt by it though my hand was burned so bad that the hospital wanted me to go to the burn center I was not able to go to the burn center for financial reasons and work reasons which it ended up putting me out of work anyways I still don't have a feeling in three of my fingers on the ends of them and this whole situation really screwed things up for me and it almost killed me.

  • 12/13/2017· AIR BAGSCrash

I WAS IN AN ACCIDENT ON 11/30/17 THAT HAD THREE IMPACTS AND NOT ONE AIRBAG DEPLOYED. I HAD AN ACCIDENT IN 10/2016 AND IT DID NOT DEPLOY EITHER, BUT I FIGURED MAYBE BECAUSE IT WASN'T AS VIOLENT OF AN ACCIDENT. THE NOVEMBER ACCIDENT WAS HARD AND SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE INDICATED THAT THEY WERE SHOCKED THEY DID NOT DEPLOY INCLUDING A DEPUTY, A COUPLE OF DOCTORS, AND TWO INSURANCE REPRESENTATIVES. MY CAR WAS TOTALED SO I DO NOT OWN IT ANYMORE. I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 45-50 MPH ON A STRAIGHT ROAD AND A PERSON CAME FROM SIDE STREET STOP SIGN AT ME TO CLIP THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE, CAUSED FRONT DRIVER SIDE TO HIT A GUARDRAIL, AND FINALLY THE CAR WENT HEAD FIRST INTO SHALLOW DITCH (HIT ROTTEN POST AND A LOT OF BUSHES). DRIVER DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN ALL THE WAY, A HOLE WAS IN THE DRIVER FRONT TIRE, THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE LOOKED CONCAVED/MISSHAPEN ON THE CAR.

  • 12/12/2022· ENGINE

My engine has a hole in the block and the starter completely blew up. Noone can explain how this has happened. The car shop wants $12,000 to repair this. The car never leaked any oil until the day it blew up on me. No check engine light ever came on, no oil light ever came on.

  • 12/11/2023· ENGINE

Hyundai has had numerous engine failures and fires, due to piston slap. Multiple lawsuits and recalls in other countries. Hyundai has a T6G service campaign to replace these engines and they even extended it to unlimited mileage for the first owner. The problem is that they will not honor this unless you are the first owner and you did all of your oil changes at the dealership. They have an 85% rejection rate for claims that have the eligible flaw... That is ridiculous. Why are they able to refuse to fix 85% of these engines that blow up and catch fire prematurely due to a known issue? Please recall these engines. Multiple times my engine has stopped leaving me with no power steering or brakes, one of which almost ended in a collusion on the highway. It took a lot of strength to push the break in to stop the car. The scariest moment of my life. And I knows these are an issue and the dealership even said he sees a bunch of them come in all the time with this issue, and yet until it is an actual recall and I will do nothing about it. Please please for the love of God issue a recall on these, thank you so much NHTSA for keeping automotive industry in check and making sure that our cars are safe and reliable.

  • 12/11/2023· ENGINE

The engine started making a clicking sound, and was running rough. Then shook violently and turned off while I was on the freeway, Then getting very hot. It is defective and the dealer took it in under the t6g campaign but it was denied due to the salvage title for unrelated issues. Now it smokes if I drive it for an hour or two and takes a while to stop smoking afterwards. This car only has 120000 miles. They said it's a goodwill campaign but not a recall so they don't have to honor it. Now it runs for a few minutes but then smokes from the engine so I shut it off.

  • 12/09/2017· AIR BAGS,ENGINE

AIRBAG COME ON STAY ON AND OIL LIGHT COME ON AND OFF

  • 12/08/2020· ENGINE

THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A TICKING NOISE AS EARLY AS 40K MILES. IT RAN OK AND I WAS LEAD TO BELIEVE THIS WAS "NORMAL" FROM THE DEALERSHIP. I MAINTAINED THE VEHICLE AS REQUIRED UNTIL 88K WHILE NOTICING MORE AND MORE OIL WAS BEING CONSUMED. AFTER SLOWING DOWN AND TURNING FROM A HIGHWAY ON TO A COUNTY ROAD, THE AUTOMATIC VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHIFT ERRATICALLY AND COULD NOT GO FASTER THAN 40MPH AND THEN THE ENGINE TURNED OFF. I MANAGED TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHILE THIS OCCURRED. THE ENGINE STARTED, BUT DRIVING BUT THE GEARS WOULD NOT SHIFT PROPERLY CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL. IN THE DEALERSHIP, THE DIAGNOSIS WAS A NEW ENGINE. I AM THE SECOND OWNER AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS INITIALLY NOTHING COULD BE DONE UNDER WARRANTEE WITH THE MILEAGE (WHILE SUGGESTING I MUST HAVE WENT WAY TOO LONG BETWEEN OIL CHANGES.....NOT EVEN CLOSE TO CORRECT). THE DEALERSHIP MADE AN APPEAL TO HYUNDAI AND OFFERED TO PAY FOR HALF OF THE COST OF A NEW ENGINE. SO I AM SUPPOSED TO BE HAPPY PAYING ONLY $4200. THE NEW ENGINE DOES NOT HAVE A TICKING SOUND AND I HIGHLY SUSPECT THAT WAS THE START OF THE PROBLEM BEFORE. I'M SEEING THE "TICKING" SOUND IN MANY OF THE COMPLAINTS AND CAN'T BELIEVE A RECALL STILL HASN'T BEEN ISSUED FOR THIS. I DON'T TRUST THIS CAR OR HYUNDAI TO DO THE RIGHT THING ON THEIR OWN.

  • 12/04/2019· ENGINE

WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 8E JUST BEFORE PINE VALLEY, IN LANE ONE, MY VEHICLE SUDDENLY BEGAN MAKING A LOUD KNOCKING NOISE. A MOMENT LATER, THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON, THEN THE ENGINE LIGHT AND THEN THE CAR STALLED AND COULD NOT BE RESTARTED. LUCKILY, AS SOON AS THE LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE CAR STALLED WE WERE ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE RIGHT HAND SHOULDER. ONCE THERE WE TRIED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE BUT WAS UNABLE TO DO SO. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO FRANK HYUNDAI. YESTERDAY WE WERE INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE IS SEIZED AND REQUIRES A NEW ENGINE. I AM THE SECOND OWNER AND HAVE ONLY HAD THE VEHICLE FOR 2 YRS AND IT ONLY HAS 87,000 MILES ON IT. IT HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON THE ENGINE SHOULD HAVE SEIZED SUDDENLY AS IT DID. ALL VEHICLE FLUIDS WERE CHECKED AND OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS WERE PERFORMED AND WERE GOOD PRIOR TO OUR TRIP. WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE NOT BEEN HIT BY ANOTHER VEHICLE WHEN THIS OCCURRED. I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS OCCURRING IN OTHER ELANTRAS OF MY SAME YEAR IN ADDITION TO THE OTHER HYUNDAI VEHICLES THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN RECALLED. IT MY URGENT REQUEST THAT THIS BE INVESTIGATED BEFORE SOMEONE DOES GET INJURED OR KILLED. I ALSO REQUEST THAT HYUNDAI INCLUED THE ELANTRAS WITH SAME THE AFFECTED YEARS OF THE SONATA AND SANTA FE'S, SUCH AS MY 2014 BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL.

  • 12/03/2014· SEAT BELTS

BOTH FRONT SEATBELTS ARE DIFFICULT TO LATCH AND DETERMINE IF THEY ARE SECURE. SEVERAL TIMES, THE DRIVERS SEATBELT HAS FAILED TO BE SECURED PROPERLY (COME UNLATCHED WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION) DUE TO SHORT LENGTH OF STATIONARY PORTION OF SEATBELT. THE STATIONARY PORTION IS TOO SHORT, AND LOCATED IN A "HOLE" BETWEEN THE DRIVERS HIP AND CONSOLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY DETERMINED THAT THE SYSTEM WAS OPERATING "AS DESIGNED" AND TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. I ADVISED THEM THAT THEY DESIGNED THE SYSTEM THAT WAS MALFUNCTIONING, AND THEY WERE FAILING TO "OWN THEIR PROBLEM". HYUNDAI HAS REFUSED (IN WRITING) TO REMEDY THIS SAFETY DEFECT. I ENCOUNTER NO PROBLEMS WITH OTHER HYUNDAI VEHICLES WHICH I HAVE OPERATED EXTENSIVELY. *JS

Engine is burning too hot its burning though oil. Oil change sept 3rd 2025 and by nov 7 2025 car had NO OIL. this is an oil burn off issue with the sport engine in this model Elantra. i cannot get an oil change every month. that is ridiculous. this time it caused my car to have flashing engine light due to insanely low oil after just TWO MONTHS. i only drive 60 miles a day. shop told me in april15 20205 i had an oil leak and they fixed it, resealed again in july cuz the oil was still going low. now they told me nov 11th they did a test and the engine is running too hot and is burning off the oil.

Brake Lights, constantly on. The vehicle, while driving, the brake lights come on and do not turn off. you must force the pedal all the way down, to, sometimes, turn them off. while driving, the lights being on, disables the ECS system, and Cruise Control. while the vehicle is parked and off the lights stay on, unless you depress the pedal, this causes power drains and dead batteries. if the lights do not work, this is a hazard to drive at any time of day. lights will also come on while car is off and has been off for some time.

THE TIMING CAP HAS BEEN REPLACED ONCE, BECAUSE THEY WERE ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE ISSUE AT THE SHOP, BUT THE LAST TWO INSTANCES THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE SO THEY REFUSED TO FIX IT. Vehicle Information: 2014 Hyundai Elantra SE Sedan, 4-Cylinder, 6-Speed Automatic, FWD Build Location: USA-Built Version (Montgomery, AL - VIN '5NP') Ownership: Second owner, purchased Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) from the Hyundai of New Port Richey dealer (Florida) in March 2016. Vehicle is owned outright. Mileage: 128,638 Approximate Date Incident Noticed: October 1, 2025 DESCRIPTION OF CRITICAL SAFETY DEFECT & WARRANTY REJECTION I am reporting a failure of the clock spring assembly, which compromises critical safety features and poses an unreasonable risk, especially since this vehicle regularly transports passengers, including children. My VIN was rejected by the Hyundai TXXA Clock Spring Extended Warranty validator despite exhibiting the exact failures covered by the campaign. Safety Failures: Airbag (SRS): Warning light is constantly illuminated; driver-side airbag is disabled and will not deploy, endangering the driver and front passenger. Horn: Completely inoperable, eliminating a vital safety communication feature required to warn other drivers. Cruise Control: Buttons on the steering wheel are non-functional. These failures are caused by a broken electrical connection within the clock spring (which typically runs the Airbag, Horn, and Cruise Control circuits). I believe the denial is related to my vehicle being the USA-Built version (VIN '5NP'). I request that NHTSA investigate why this safety campaign arbitrarily excludes USA-built Elantras (but not Korean-built) experiencing the identical failure, thereby placing an unreasonable repair cost burden on owners for a critical safety component.

SRS LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE DASH, THIS MEANS THAT THE AIRBAG CONTROL UNIT SEES AN ISSUE IN THE SYSTEM AND DISABLED THE SYSTEM. THIS MEANS THAT THE AIRBAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT.

The vehicle caught fire while it was in motion; there were loud bangs and a lot of noise, and smoke started coming out of the front, and the engine and the undercarriage caught fire.I managed to turn it off, but when they were towing it, the mechanics did the diagnostic and found wires were faulty and damaged the engine.

WHILE APPROACHING A RED LIGHT I SMELLED AN ELECTRICAL BURNING SMELL. ONCE AT THE RED LIGHT I SAW SMOKE AND IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR. I PULLED OVER AND EXITED THE VEHICLE TO SEE THAT THE 3RD TAIL LIGHT WAS SMOKING. I WAS ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. I REMOVED THE LIGHT CASING AND SECURED THE WIRING. ON MY WAY TO THE AUTO REPAIR SHOP, MY TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON MY DASHBOARD. THE WIRING FOR THIS 3RD TAIL LIGHT RUNS ALONG THE GAS TANK ENTRANCE AND COULD HAVE CAUSED AN EXPLOSION. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI AND WAS TOLD THAT MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN RECALL #13V113000 AND THAT MY REPAIRS WOULD BE OUT-OF-POCKET.

  • 11/09/2020· AIR BAGS

I PURCHASED MY HYUNDAI ELANTRA IN 2018 FROM A DEALER IN GILBERT. THE VEHICLE WAS PRE-OWNED BUT RECORDS DO NOT INDICATE ANY ACCIDENTS. RECENTLY I HAVE STARTED TO HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THE AIRBAG LIGHT BEING ILLUMINATED. IT STARTED OUT AS AN INTERMITTENT ISSUE BUT NOW THE AIRBAG LIGHT IS ALWAYS ON. I LEARNED THE ILLUMINATED AIRBAG LIGHT MEANS MY AIRBAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY IN A CRASH. I'VE NEVER HAD AN ISSUE WITH AIRBAGS IN ANY VEHICLE I'VE OWNED. SOME HAVING OVER 300,000 MILES. HYUNDAI HAS NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE AIRBAG SYSTEM FAILING. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND IT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY HYUNDAI AMERICA. I'VE TRIED CONTACTING THEM FOR SUPPORT THRU EMAIL BUT HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY RESPONSE.

AFTER DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A SIGNIFICANT KNOCKING SOUND. I PULLED OVER AND HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER. THEY PERFORMED AN ENGINE DIAGNOSIS AND REMOVED THE OIL PAN TO FIND A LOT OF METAL FLAKES. I WAS ADVISED NOT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE (ENGINE WOULD LIKELY SEIZE) AND INFORMED THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 85,000 MILES ON IT, AND THE REPAIR QUOTES ARE $6,500-8,500, WHICH IS ALMOST WHAT THE VEHICLE WAS WORTH BEFORE THE ENGINE FAILURE. NEITHER THE MANUFACTURER OR THE DEALER WOULD PROVIDE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TOWARDS REPAIR DUE TO ME BEING THE SECOND OWNER. SINCE TAKING OWNERSHIP AT APPROXIMATELY 70,000 MILES I HAVE HAD EVERY RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE PERFORMED BY THE DEALER. NO INDICATION WAS EVER GIVEN TO ME ABOUT THERE BEING METAL IN THE OIL PAN OR ANY POTENTIAL PROBLEM ARISING. I HAVE SINCE FOUND OUT THAT THESE ENGINES HAVE A HIGH FAILURE RATE, AND THE MANUFACTURER FIGHTS TOOTH-AND-NAIL TO AVOID ACKNOWLEDGING A PROBLEM OR ASSISTING WITH REPAIR COSTS FOR SECOND OWNERS -- EVEN IF WELL UNDER THE 100,000-MILE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY PROVIDED TO ORIGINAL OWNERS.
