  • ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE (EGR VALVE)Campaign 18V755000 · 25/10/2018

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d and 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. If the EGR cooler leaks internally, the coolant can mix with diesel engine soot. The high EGR temperatures may result in these particles possibly smoldering and melting the intake manifold.

Risk: The melting intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.

Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the EGR cooler as necessary. If a leak has already occurred, the engine intake manifold will also be replaced. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began May 13, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

The affected vehicles have a driver's frontal air bag inflator that may have been improperly welded.

  • 12/30/2024· FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Almost caused a major accident when High Pressure Fuel Pump failed unexpectedly while driving. Good thing my family was not in car when this happened. This is completely unacceptable and should be recalled on this vehicle just like many others of this model. I have included picture of metal shavings in fuel system from high pressure fuel pump failure.

  • 12/28/2022· POWER TRAIN

The contact owns a 2014 BMW X5. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the vehicle made an abnormal sound. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact veered to the side of the road and inspected the vehicle but could not find any failure. However, as the contact continued driving, he heard an abnormal banging sound coming from underneath the vehicle. The vehicle became unstable, almost causing the contact to lose control of the steering wheel. The contact stated that he could also hear the driveshaft hitting against other components. The contact stated that metal pieces were propelled from the vehicle and cracked the windshield of another vehicle. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road with the assistance of other drivers who stopped to give assistance. There were no injuries sustained. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle was then towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the universal joint at the end of the driveshaft had sheared off, causing the front of the driveshaft to detach. The driveshaft struck and damaged the transmission and caused some engine damage also. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V138000 (Power Train). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

  • 12/21/2013· STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

I HAVE LEASED BRAND NEW 2014 BMW X5 ON 12/09/2013. SUDDENLY AFTER 2 DAYS, IT HAS BROKEN. HEATED STEERING FUNCTION STOPPED WORKING. SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF MY SELLING DEALER KEPT THE VEHICLE OVERNIGHT AND FOUND OUT SOMETHING IS BROKEN AND THE BROKEN PART HAS TO BE REPLACED. THEY SAID IT WOULD BE GOING TO TAKE AT LEAST END OF JANUARY 2014(THIS IS WHAT THEY TOLD VERBALLY). NEITHER SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF THE SELLING DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER, GUARANTEE WHEN IT CAN FIX AND REFUSED TO PROVIDE DOCUMENT EVIDENCE ON THAT. RIGHT NOW 2014 BMW X5S ARE ON THE ROAD WITHOUT HAVING THE REPLACEMENT PARTS TO FIX IN CASE OF ISSUES. IN MY CASE IT IS HEATED STEERING WHEEL, BUT I'M NOT SURE THE ELECTRONICS OF THIS VEHICLE SINCE IT HAS BROKEN SO NEW AND IT IS TAKING LONGER TIME TO FIX WHICH NOBODY KNOWS WHEN. WHAT I BELIEVE IS MANUFACTURERS SHOULD NOT RELEASE THEIR VEHICLES, UNLESS THEY HAVE FULL CONTROL ON THEIR PRODUCTION LINES. ALSO I ASK DOCUMENT EVIDENCE FROM MANUFACTURER AND SELLING DEALERS SERVICE DEPARTMENT, BY CONFIRMING THAT THIS VEHICLE IS SAFE TO DRIVE. THEY ARE REFUSING TO PROVIDE SUCH DOCUMENT. I REALLY DOUBT THAT 2014 BMW X5S ARE STILL GOOD ENOUGH TO HIT THE ROAD. BTW, THE VEHICLE IS STILL ON TEMPORARY TAGS. SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS SO NEW WHEN IT BROKE AND THE TIME IT IS GOING TO FIX IT IS A UNCERTAIN, I FEEL REALLY UNSAFE ON THIS VEHICLES APPRECIATE IF YOU COULD INVESTIGATE THIS. THANK YOU. *TR

ON OCTOBER 18, 2017 AT APPROXIMATELY 7:50PM, MY 2014 BMW X5 SPONTANEOUSLY IGNITED IN MY GARAGE - THE FIRE FROM THE EXPLOSION DESTROYED ALL CONTENTS IN MY GARAGE, INCLUDING A SECOND CAR AND THE FIRE AND SMOKE DAMAGE DESTROYED THE HOUSE AND MOST OF THE CONTENTS. THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND PARKED IN MY GARAGE; THE GARAGE WAS CLOSED. I PARKED THE CAR IN MY GARAGE AT 7:30PM AND THE EXPLOSION HAPPENED AROUND 7:50PM. THE CAR WAS IN PERFECT CONDITION, I HAD JUST PURCHASED IT ON JUNE 27, 2017, IT WAS CERTIFIED WITH 16,000 MILES ON IT AND I ONLY PUT 5000 MILES ON IT WITHIN THAT 3.5 MONTH TIME PERIOD. THERE WERE NO SIGNAL OR WARNING INDICATORS ON, EVER; IT WASN'T EVEN DUE FOR AN OIL CHANGE. THE CAR DROVE FINE THAT DAY AND NOTHING WAS AMISS. THE FIRE INVESTIGATORS ARE FAIRLY CERTAIN THE ABS CONTROL UNIT (A PART MANUFACTURED BY BOSCH) WAS FAULTY AND SHORTED, THUS CAUSING THE FIRE. THE INVESTIGATOR SAID THIS IS THE 150TH CASE HE'S SEEN OF THIS SPECIFIC CONTROL UNIT STARTING A FIRE. I WAS IN THE SHOWER DURING THE EXPLOSION, MY TWO AUTISTIC CHILDREN, AGES 7 AND 10, WERE SLEEPING. (MY HUSBAND WAS NOT HOME AT THE TIME). THANKFULLY I WAS ABLE TO ESCAPE WITH MY CHILDREN UNHARMED. THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN INCREDIBLY TRAUMATIC FOR MY TWO CHILDREN, BOTH OF WHOM HAVE SEVERE AUTISM. WE MOVED INTO A NEW HOME, BUT MOST OF OUR BELONGINGS HAVE BEEN DESTROYED AND WE ARE LITERALLY STARTING FROM SCRATCH. I RECEIVED NOTIFICATION FROM BMW OF THE SAFETY RECALL AND "FINAL REMEDY AVAILABLE" I CALLED STEVENS CREEK BMW TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT AND WAS ADVISED THAT IT WILL TAKE ABOUT 1 MONTH FOR THEM TO GET THE PART. WITH A RECALL INVOLVING SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH I FEEL THAT 1 MONTH IS FAR TOO LONG TO EXPECT OWNERS NOT TO BE ABLE TO SAFELY DRIVE THEIR VEHICLE.

DOORS OPEN BY THEMSELVES, WHEN LOCKED, WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR NO APPARENT REASON. (THIS VEHICLE HAS SOFT-CLOSE DOORS, COMFORT ACCESS OPTION) FIRST INCIDENT WAS ON 6 SEPT. 2014 AT 6:35 AM. I MADE A RIGHT TURN AND BEGAN TO MERGE ONTO A DARK HIGHWAY AND WAS STARTLED WHEN THE LIGHTS TURNED ON INSIDE THE CABIN, A WARNING LIGHT/DOOR OPEN INDICATOR ILLUMINATED IN THE DASH AND I HEARD AIR RUSHING THROUGH MY DRIVER'S DOOR. IT HAD POPPED OPEN AND WAS AJAR AND THE DOOR LOCK WAS STILL DOWN. I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 35-40 MPH BEGINNING THE ACCELERATION TO THE SPEED LIMIT OF 55. (IT WAS EARLY MORNING, DARK, AND TO SUDDENLY HAVE THE LIGHTS COME ON AND WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATE WAS VERY SCARY) I WASN'T ABLE TO SAFELY PULL OVER DUE TO OTHER CARS AROUND ME AND I COULDN'T PULL THE DOOR COMPLETELY CLOSED BY PULLING ON IT. I HAD TO HOLD THE DOOR WITH MY HAND UNTIL THERE WERE NO OTHER CARS AROUND. THEN, WHILE DRIVING, I HAD TO OPEN THE DOOR QUICKLY AND SLAM IT SHUT. I WASN'T ABLE TO KEEP THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY STEADY IN THE LANE WHEN DOING SO. THIS COULD EASILY HAVE CAUSED A CRASH. I WAS POSITIVE THE DOOR WAS CLOSED COMPLETELY WHEN I LEFT THE HOUSE, SOFT CLOSE DOORS ALWAYS CLOSE COMPLETELY, NO DOOR OPEN INDICATORS WERE LIT, AND MY VEHICLE WON'T LET YOU DRIVE AWAY IF A DOOR IS OPEN. I WAS ON THE ROAD ABOUT 30-40 MINUTES OR SO WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED. THE EXACT THING HAPPENED AGAIN, 2 WEEKS LATER, WHEN I MADE A LEFT TURN INTO THE DRIVEWAY WHERE I WORK, TURNED RIGHT AND PULLED INTO A PARKING SPACE. WHILE I WAS PULLING IN, THE PASSENGER FRONT DOOR POPPED OPEN EXACTLY LIKE THE FIRST INCIDENT. WE BROUGHT IT INTO BMW ON 7 OCT., THERE IS TSB WITH THE "FIX", THEY HAD OUR CAR FOR 5 DAYS. REPLACED BOWDEN CABLES AND PUT IN A MODIFIED PART. ON 2 NOVEMBER IT HAPPENED AGAIN TO THE LEFT REAR DOOR. I TOOK PICTURES AND A VIDEO. IT'S GOING BACK TO BMW 4 NOV. *TR

I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT BMW WAS VERY STRICT ABOUT THE MILEAGE WARRANTY AND WOULD NOT FIX IT DESPITE THE FACT I CALLED TO MAKE THE APPOINTMENT THE WEEK PRIOR "WHILE STILL BELOW 50,000 MILES". I WAS TOLD I SHOULD HAVE FLAT-BEDDED IT IN AND I WOULD HAVE STAYED BELOW 50000 MILES AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED. THIS SEEMED A RIDICLOUS TO ME. THE ESTIMATED COST WITH DIAGNOSIS WAS $1,100 APROX. FOR WHAT APPEARED TO BE A DOOR LATCH SENSOR MALFUNCTION. AT 52, 500 MILES THE DRIVER DOOR IS NOW HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AND IS AT THE DEALERSHIP. I KNOW BMW HAS HAD OTHER ISSUES WITH THEIR SOFT CLOSE DOORS AND WANT TO ADD MY ISSUES. MY VEHICLE IS A 2014 X5 35I XDRIVE. ORDER OF EVENTS, 5-17 48,500 APRX. FIRST ISSUE WITH PASSENGER DOOR (INTERMITTENT THEN CONTINOUS) SCHEDULED APPT 6-6-17 VEHICLE HAD 50015 MILES. 8-17 DRIVER SIDE DOOR LIGHT (INTERMITTENT AT FIRST THEN CONTINUOUS) IN DEALER 9 -10-17 FOR REPAIR. I DID CONTACT BMW ABOUT ISSUE AND THEY ARE LOOKING INTO OFFERING ME "GOODWILL" SERVICE!!

PEDESTRIAN (DAYTIME) WARNING AND AVOIDANCE SYSTEM ACTIVATED SPONTANEOUSLY ON AN EMPTY STREET - THERE WAS NO PEDESTRIAN IN SIGHT AND NO CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THE CAR AUTOMATICALLY SUDDENLY BRAKE VIOLENTLY AND A TRUCK RIGHT BEHIND ME ALMOST HIT ME. I FEEL THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AS IT HAS POTENTIAL FOR A SERIOUS ACCIDENT IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN AGAIN IN A MORE CROWDED STREET. IT IS DISCONCERTING TO DRIVE A CAR THAT MAY SUDDENLY BRAKE WITHOUT WARNING! *TR

Front driveshaft broke at U-joint while driving Front driveshaft was showing signs of rust prior to the incident but unknown at the time that it was a more serious, known issue with the previous model. I believe this to be the exact same problem as the 2010-2013 BMW x5 E70 chassis (recall 17V-138). I saw the BMW service bulletin (unfortunately after the incident) which would have clearly shown me that my driveshaft was about to break. My vehicle is the next generation x5, 2014 4.4L with all wheel drive. It has the direct replacement driveshaft as the E70, but with the newer part number. I was driving, luckily at low speed, when the car started to vibrate (like a tire problem), then bang! clunk, clunk, clunk. The U-joint in my front driveshaft broke, smashed the transmission, exhaust and floor board causing the vehicle to be disabled. Transmission was cracked with a hole in the side of it. Cost to repair at BMW dealer exceeds $19K. BMW was unwilling to accept responsibility for the damages after working with their corporate team. They were not interested in reviewing the data as potentially part of the recall. I believe, based on what BMW knows about the previous recall and the pictures of my driveshaft a few months before it broke, this is a problem that BMW has not fixed on later models which will become more evident as they age. I suspect a possible culprit is the A/C drain line that is almost right over top of the driveshaft and likely lets cold water constantly land on the U-joint. (Design flaw) - that's my opinion. I will be happy to share any additional information to help prevent this from happening to other BMW owners. I would like to see this reviewed for consideration of an additional model range to be covered.

2014 BMW x5 xdrive35D equipped with a Bosch Cp4 (HPFP) High Pressure Fuel Pump that is known to implode., cause severe damage to my vehicles fuel system that is costing me thousands in repairs. My year make model and build year all fall under the recall but my vin is not on the recall list. BMW has no answers for me and just says nothing they can do. BOSCH CP4 HPFP failed and released metal shavings throughout all fuel lines, injec BMW had a recall for 12K vehicles but mine was not on the recall list and BMW cannot explain why given that my fuel pump exploded like so many other BOSCH CP4 . I believe BMW knew that these pumps were bad and did not notify all owners that had them in in their car.

THE DOORS ON MY BRAND NEW X5 OPEN SLIGHTLY AND BECOME AJAR WHILE DRIVING. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THERE IS A 'THUNK' SOUND AND I CAN HEAR AIR NOISE DUE TO THE SMALL GAP. THIS HAPPENED ON 7/26/14 TO THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE DOOR. BMW NORTH AMERICA WORKED ON THE VEHICLE FOR SEVERAL DAYS REPLACING THE REAR DOOR LATCH MECHANISMS AND ADJUSTING THE TWO FRONT DOOR MECHANISMS. THE PROBLEM WAS NOT CORRECTED, ON 8/23/14 THE DRIVER'S DOOR ALSO BECAME AJAR WHILE I WAS DRIVING. WHEN IT HAPPENS IT IS SOMEWHAT STARTLING DUE TO THE SUDDEN 'THUNK', PARTICULARLY WHEN IT'S THE DRIVER'S DOOR. ON BOTH OCCASIONS, WHEN THE INCIDENT HAPPENS, THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS UP INDICATING THAT A DOOR IS NOT CORRECTLY CLOSED. THE DOORS ARE LOCKED WHEN THIS HAPPENS. The owner owns a 2014 BMW x5 35d. Owner was driving 35 MPH at time of incident. Vehicle was working fine, no issues. All of a sudden, a drive train warning came up and the vehicle slowed down, stalled and shifted into neutral automatically. There was no warning or any indication prior to this, which is a bit scary. The owner was able to veer to into a parking lot. The vehicle failed to restart after several attempts. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was later towed to a BMW dealership for further testing. It was determined that the high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) had failed and that the entire fuel system needed to be replaced due to the intrusion of metal fragments into the fuel system. The vehicle is still with the dealer after over two weeks. Currently, the owner has been charged a diagnostics fee. Costs to repair this issue are near $20k USD. Dealership advised owner that the vehicle NOT be repaired due to a high possibility of the engine having damage from metal fragments/debris. So now what?

WHILE RETURNING HOME FROM CHICAGO, AROUND 3:30 PM ON SUNDAY 07/26/14 - I WAS EXITING I-88 ON THE ROUTE 31 EXIT RAMP. HALFWAY UP THE RAMP THE TRUNK/HATCH OF THE X5 OPENED ON ITS OWN. THE CAR WAS TRAVELING APPROX. 28 - 30 MPH WHEN THE HATCH OPENED UNDER ITS OWN CONTROL. BOTH OF THE DRIVERS (MY) HANDS WERE ON THE STEERING WHEEL TURNING THE VEHICLE WELL AWAY FROM THE TRUNK CONTROLS LOCATED ON THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR AT THE TIME. MY DOG WAS LOCATED IN THE BACK/TRUNK OF THE CAR WHEN THE HATCH DECIDED TO OPEN. LUCKILY HE WAS SLEEPING AT THE TIME IT OPENED AS THERE IS USUALLY NO HOLDING HIM BACK WHEN IT COMES TO ENTERING OR EXITING THE CAR. COMBINE THIS WITH THE FACT THAT I THINK HE WAS CONFUSED AS TO WHY THE CAR WAS STILL MOVING AT THE TIME THE HATCH OPENED, THAT BY THE TIME I GOT THE CAR PULLED OVER AND IN PARK; THE DOG ([XXX]), WAS JUST ON THE VERGE OF JUMPING OUT AND I WAS ABLE TO CATCH HIM WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO DO SO. I WAS FORTUNATE THAT THE CAR DIRECTLY BEHIND ME ON THE RAMP SAW THE DOG AND STOPPED SO I WAS ABLE TO GATHER THE DOG AND RETURN HIM TO THE CAR SAFELY. I THEN PROCEEDED TO CLOSE THE TRUNK USING THE BUTTON LOCATED ON THE HATCH. THE HATCH/DOOR OPERATED WITHOUT INCIDENT FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE RIDE HOME. WHILE I'M GRATEFUL THAT NO ONE WAS HURT OR INJURED AS RESULT OF THIS INCIDENT, THE SCENE WAS STILL KIND OF TERRIFYING. YOU'RE DRIVING AND THE TRUNK ON YOUR SUV MAGICALLY COMES UNDER POWER AND OPENS ON IT'S OWN? WHILE THE CAR WAS MOVING? WITH MY DOG IN THE TRUNK? WHAT IF I WAS DOING 55 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY AND I WAS IN THE MIDDLE LANE OF THE HIGHWAY? I PREVIOUSLY SCHEDULED THE CAR FOR SERVICE BECAUSE THE TRUNK WOULDN'T OPEN, BUT THEN IT STARTED WORKING AGAIN, SO I NEVER BROUGHT THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE. SO I'VE GONE FROM THE TRUNK NOT WANTING TO OPEN TO OPENING ON IT'S OWN WHILE THE CAR IS IN DRIVE AND IN MOTION. THIS 2014 BMW X5 HAS A DIESEL ENGINE. THE FUEL PUMP HAS FAILED TWICE IN NINE MONTHS CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SUDDENLY LOSE POWER AND COMPLETELY STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AT A STOP LIGHT BOTH TIMES. HOWEVER, THIS CAN OCCUR WHILE IN MOTION AT ANY TIME. THIS DIESEL ENGINE FUEL PUMP FAILURE IMPACTS ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM WHICH REQUIRES A COMPLETE REPLACEMENT (PLEASE SEE ATTACHMENT FOR FIRST REPAIR. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY AT BMW SERVICE}. THIS PROBLEM WILL OCCUR AGAIN BECAUSE THEY KEEP USING THE SAME PARTS. I AM SURE WITH SOME INVESTIGATING YOU WILL FIND THAT THIS IS AN UNREPORTED PROBLEM WITH BMW. THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY IS AT STAKE AND BMW IS BEING COMPLETELY EVASIVE AT THIS POINT.
