These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

Risk: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver air bag. On X5 and X6 vehicles, only the inflator will be replaced. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 11, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

COMPLETELY OUT OF THE BLUE AT 82,000 MILES, MY 2014 BMW X1 WOULD NOT START. MY MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THE PROB AND MY ENGINE WAS DEFECTIVE, AS IT WAS MADE WITH A PLASTIC TIMING BELT COVER, WHICH DEGRADES OVER TIME & DESTROYS YOUR ENGINE BETWEEN 70-85K MILES. THERE WAS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT WHICH ENDED 2 YEARS AGO, WHICH REQUIRED AN EXTENDED 7YR/70K WARRANTY. THERE IS ALSO NO PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE PLAN FOR THE TIMING CHAIN AND THEY ARE APPROXIMATELY $3-13,000 EACH. THIS DEFECTIVE ENGINE WAS OUT IN SUPERCHARGER BMW ENGINES BETWEEN 2014-2017. I PERFORMED EVERY OIL CHANGE & PM ON MY VEHICLE AND IT JUST DIED, WHEN I WAS OPERATING THE VEHICLE ON THE FREEWAY. I'M STILL DRIVING A 2000 BMW Z3 WITH 168K MILES. THEY SOLD ME AN ENGINE THEY KNEW WOULD FAIL AND THEY WILL NOT HELP ME REPAIR MY CAR, BECAUSE IT'S OUT OF WARRANTY. I WAS ALSO TAKING IT TO BMW SERVICE CENTERS FOR SERVICE AND IT WAS NEVER MENTIONED ABOUT THE TIMING CHAIN WEARING OUT. VERY DISMAYED & DISAPPOINTED. I COULD HAVE BROKE DOWN ANYWAY AND BEEN UNSAFE.

Vehicle: 2014 BMW X1 xDrive28i Incident Date: 11/21/2025 Location: Interstate highway in Wisconsin Description of the Issue: My husband was driving our 2014 BMW X1 xDrive28i when he was involved in a front-end collision at approximately 40 mph. He struck the rear of another vehicle with the front passenger-side portion of the BMW. Despite the force and angle of the crash, neither the driver airbag nor the passenger airbag deployed. Immediately after impact, heavy smoke began coming through the dashboard vents within seconds, and the vehicle caught fire within approximately one minute. The entire front of the vehicle was destroyed by the fire. The airbags never deployed at any point, including during the fire. We believe this represents a serious failure of the airbag system or the crash sensors. A collision at this speed and angle, followed by catastrophic fire, should have triggered airbag deployment. This creates a significant safety risk for the driver and any passengers. What Happened to the Occupant: The driver experienced impact to the chest and upper body that likely would have been mitigated by airbag deployment. He required medical evaluation. Why We Are Reporting: We want to notify NHTSA of this potential airbag system failure, as it may indicate a defect affecting additional BMW X1 vehicles. We are requesting that the incident be reviewed to determine whether: The frontal crash sensors malfunctioned The airbag control module failed Wiring or electrical issues prevented deployment A previously unknown defect exists in this model This was a dangerous failure of a critical safety system. There was no prior airbag warning light or malfunction indicator before the crash. The vehicle is a total loss and is currently with our insurance company. We will request the airbag control module (ACM) and crash data from the insurance inspection. The vehicle has not previously been involved in an airbag deployment. The vehicle had up-to-date maintenance.

  • 11/11/2021· STRUCTURE

I believe manufacturers are suppossed to provide replacement parts for 10 years. It appears BMW is circumventing this law by makinig it harder and more expensive to get replacement parts before ten years has passed by making owners purchase unnecessary parts as an assembly. First case with my BWM X1- The inside door handle has a snap-in plastic cover coated with a rubber/plastic compound that deteriorates over time into a gooey substance that comes off onto your hand when entering or exiting the car. The dealer requires owner to purchase the whole door panel costing well over $1,000 not including the labor. The part itself can be purchased on eBay from China for approximately $16. Snaps on. Second case is for my BMW 2011 335i convertible. The dealer ran the car through their car wash and one piece of the convertible hardtop trim (plastic) broke. The dealer told me I had to pay over $680 (after discount) for a set of 6 trim pieces even though I needed just one. BMW used to sell the individual parts, but now they don't. IN addition to the parts, I'd have to pay to have the body shop paint the parts and then the labor to install them. Almost $1,000 to replace one plastic part not worth $25. Kit PN 54-37-5-A19-AA4, part I need was PN 54377184037. Second incident just happened this week. Although my 335i is now 10 years old, they were selling the kit several years ago, long before the ten years were up. They are deliberately forcing people to not repair their vehicles by pricing the parts so high that the owners can't afford it.

IT HAS BEEN NEARLY NINE MONTHS NOW SINCE I RECEIVED THIS NOTICE AND I AM VERY CONCERNED WITH THE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT IT IS TAKING TO ADDRESS THE TAKATA AIRBAG SITUATION. I KNOW THAT IT STATES IN ONE OF MY NOTICES FROM BMW THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE THE PARTS AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME AND THAT THEY WILL NOTIFY ME ONCE THEY HAVE THE PARTS AVAILABLE TO DO THE REPAIRS, BUT I THINK 9 MONTHS IS MORE THAN ENOUGH TIME. I AM NOT SURE OF WHEN BMW FIRST KNEW THAT MY VEHICLE HAD THE RECALLED AIRBAG BUT IT MAKES ME WONDER IF THEY SOLD ME THE CAR KNOWING THAT THE AIRBAG WAS DEFECTIVE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. *TR

I WILL TURN THE CAR OFF AND TRY TO ENGAGE THE TRANSMISSION REPEATEDLY AND SOMEHOW THINGS GET MOVE. THE LAST TIME THIS OCCURRED I WENT ONLINE, AND FOUND INFORMATION ABOUT RELEASING THE TRANSMISSION. IT INVOLVES AN NUMBER OF STEPS, AND SO FAR WORKS. THE LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED I BLOCKED AN INTERSECTION FOR SOMETIME BEFORE BEING ABLE TO FOLLOW THE STEPS I FOUND ONLINE TO GET THE CAR DRIVING. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY SCARY SITUATION AND DANGEROUS IF NOT DEADLY FOR ME AND OTHERS ON THE ROAD. THE CAR WILL GO TO THE DEALERSHIP THIS WEEK, AND I'M DRIVING A RENTAL NOW. TAKATA RECALL - I AM CURRENTLY STUCK WITH A CAR THAT I DO NOT LIKE AND HAVE HAD MULTIPLE ELECTRICAL ISSUES WITH SINCE I ORIGINALLY PURCHASED IT IN 2014. I HAVE HAD EVERY INTENTION OF TRADING THIS CAR IN, BUT NOW WITH THE RECALL, I AM STUCK WITH IT. BMW HAS BEEN TOTALLY RUDE AND GIVES NO INFORMATION ON WHEN THE AIRBAGS WILL BE AVAILABLE. WHEN I BROUGHT THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE, MY SERVICE REP SAID THAT THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT IF I DIED DUE TO THE AIRBAG, MY FAMILY WOULD AT LEAST BE RICH. WE HAVE CONTACT BMW AND THEY TELL US THAT THE AIRBAG WE HAVE ISN'T REALLY PART OF THE RECALL, BUT SINCE ALL OF THEM HAVE TO BE REPLACED, OUR CAR IS ON THE LIST. WE ARE SEEING ARTICLES THAT SAY THAT BMW HAS UNTIL 2020 TO REPLACE IT. DOES THAT MEAN I AM STUCK WITH THIS THING? WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF PURCHASING THE CAR, THE SOUND SYSTEM DIED IN THE CAR. THE CAR HAS LOCKED ME OUT OF IT AT THE GAS STATION (KEYS IN THE CAR), THE ALARM HAS GONE OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE CAR. IT WILL SUDDENLY SOUND AN ALARM THAT MY PASSENGER NEEDS TO WEAR IT'S SEAT BELT WHEN THERE IS NO PASSENGER AND NOTHING IS ON THE SEAT. AND NOW I HAVE THIS AIRBAG PROBLEM. I DO NOT TRUST THIS CAR, I DO NOT FEEL SAFE AND BMW HAS NOT BE HELPFUL AT ALL. *TR

I reviewed the safety recalls for my specific vehicle however, I don’t see anything about the brake recall. On my vehicle service history report, I don’t see any repairs made in relation to the recall. The recall notice specifically identifies 2013/14 BMW X1 SAV. I’m concerned because I have had brake problems for a year now that my service center can’t seem to figure out the cause of. I’m worried my vehicle may have been missed somehow, and the symptoms I’m experiencing are very dangerous, even if not recall related. I am more than happy to present the vehicle for inspection at your convenience.

I believe there is a class action lawsuit for timing chains and oil pumps on BMW years 2012-2015 with N20/N26 engines. My vehicle is an exact match for this recall but it dos not show for BMW or even on your website. How do I proceed with this matter since it is something that I should not have to pay for. Can you please advise further.

MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK ON PAPER MILL ROAD IN NEWARK, DELAWARE AND HEARD A "KERTHUNK" FROM THE ENGINE. HE PULLED OVER TO THE HARD SHOULDER OF THE ROAD, SAW HE HAD NOT RUN OVER ANYTHING, AND THEN SAW OIL GUSHING ONTO THE ROAD FROM THE MOTOR. A FEW MINUTES LATER, AS HE WAS SITTING IN THE STATIONARY CAR, HE SAW THE HOOD OF THE CAR STARTING TO BUBBLE. HE EXITED THE VEHICLE AND THE CAR WENT UP IN FLAMES. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT CAME AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE -- THAT PROCESS TOOK AROUND 15 MINUTES. THE DELAWARE STATE PATROL (OFFICER FERGUSON) ARRIVED ON THE SCENE AND HAD THE CAR TOWED. THE CAR HAD BEEN MAINTAINED BY THE BMW DEALER FOR A "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT 9 DAYS BEFORE THE FIRE. BMW USA ISSUED A NOTICE IN JULY 2017 ABOUT ISSUES WITH A THERMOSTAT IN THE X1. THE THERMOSTAT WAS THE ONLY PART REPLACED BY THE DEALER DURING SERVICE (NB: THERE HAD ALSO BEEN A NORMAL OIL CHANGE MAINTENANCE AT THE END OF AUGUST BY THE SAME DEALER.)

MY CAR SMELLS LIKE MOLD AND I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO ISOLATE THE ISSUE TO REMOVE THE SMELL. I AM CONCERNED IT POSES A SERIOUS HEALTH RISK IF MOLD IS GROWING. THERE IS NOT WATER IN THE VEHICLE AS I HAVE CHECKED THE FLOOR BOARDS AND CUSHIONS. I HAVE ALSO REPLACED THE A/C FILTER AND CHECKED THE WATER DRAINS FOR THE SUN ROOF. ALL SEEM TO BE WORKING CORRECTLY.

Back panel of sunroof shade comes off track and may get stuck inside the headliner, generally due to adhesive failure or broken clips. Seems to be a common issue for this year/model. Can cause car to reach unsafe temperatures in warm climates with shade stuck open. Can also cause shade to fall down and obstruct driver’s view. Warranties generally won’t cover repair since it is not a motor failure.

We had a bad coolant leak starting at 96,670 miles. We took our vehicle into our local repair shop, they fixed the coolant reservoir but the leak still persisted. We were told we would need a whole new water pump and housing unit however they couldn’t fix it due to not having sufficient resources. After the leak started our vehicle has started acting up electronically (examples: seatbelt warning going off without anyone in the seat, overhead lights turning on while driving, ect)

TAKATA RECALL. I GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT WITH MY 2014 BMW X1 IN THE WINTER OF 2015, JUST A YEAR AFTER LEASING THIS VEHICLE. A CAR HIT ME SO HARD FROM BEHIND, THAT I HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME, TOTALING MY CAR COMPLETELY. I WAS SENT TO THE HOSPITAL BECAUSE MY AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THIS HAS CAUSED ME THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN MEDICAL BILL THAT MY HEALTH INSURANCE DID NOT COVER. IF THE AIRBAGS WENT OFF, I MAY NOT HAVE HIT MY HEAD AND WOULD HAVE SAVED ME FROM GOING TO THE HOSPITAL. THIS RECALL COULD HAVE CAUSED OTHERS WITH A MORE SEVERE ACCIDENT POSSIBLE DEATH. THEREFORE BMW SHOULD NOT ONLY REPLACE THE DEFECTED AIRBAGS BUT ALSO COMPENSATE EVERYONE WHO RISKED THEIR LIVES DRIVING THIS MACHINE THAT COULD HAVE KILLED THEM.
