  DEF TANKS FROZE IN COLD WEATHER CAUSING MULTIPLE PARTS TO FAIL IN THE ENGINE. DEF SYSTEM I BELIEVE IS NOW COMPROMISED AS A RESULT OF POOR ENGINEERING FOR THE OVERALL SYSTEM. VEHICLE IS PARKED OUTSIDE AND THERE WERE TEMPERATURES WELL BELOW ZERO.

  Due to its diesel related scandals, BMW has agreed to extend its diesel emission related components' warranty to 10 years or 120k miles. My 2014 BMW 328d's nox sensor failed in 2022 and i submitted my repair bill for replacing the nox sensor to bmw recently. BMW denied my reimbursement claiming the warranty expired despite the documents i submitted was for a repair done in 2022 with credit card receipts and repair shop copy of work done.

I was directed to the local Dealer for upgrade - Local Delar confirmed that do not have information for this upgrade and directed me back to BMW customer support - I contacted BMW customer service and they confirmed that this feature operates on 3G and no longer available Connected Drive installed on the vehicle CUSTOMER CONCERN: I do expect a car manufacurer that sells vehicles with cellular dependent features to conform to the latest cellular communication standard in North America and issue a recall to upgrade 3G dependent vehicles with certain sold capabilities that stopped operating due to the 3G to 4G transition in North America

  Occasionally it is impossible to unlock the door from the inside with the manual door unlock. The door operates in a two-step manner - pull the door latch once to unlock the door, and then pull again to open the door. However, sometimes the first pull fails to unlock the door and the only way to unlock the vehicle is with the electric door unlock. When this occurs, there is notable tension in the door handle, and the pop-up unlock indicator does move upwards in synch with the door handle position - it's simply not reaching the unlock point, and there is resistance felt in the door latch. Even trying to assist the mechanism by grasping the unlock indicator (as doors used to be unlocked in this fashion) does not work. Obviously, if the electric system fails for any reason, not being able to open the door is a major safety issue. When this happens it is also observed that the electric lock operates very slowly. Instead of the post popping up and unlocking almost immediately, it takes a second or two for the door to unlock, as if there is additional internal resistance in the mechanism. This is observed on BOTH the driver and passenger side doors. I have brought this to the attention of the dealer on separate occasions. The suggestion has been to replace a cable in the door due to stretch. However, based on the nature of the issue and the symptoms in both doors it seems like an issue with the latch or locking mechanism itself. The passenger door is unlocked very infrequently compared to the driver's door and it seem unlikely they would wear at the same rate if it was a cable stretch issue. I have been able to record a video of this problem occurring. I plan to show it to the dealer at my next service in the next couple weeks since they were unable to replicate the issue.

  TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 BMW 328D. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, THE DRIVE TRAIN MALFUNCTION WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO BERT OGDEN BMW (3201 N 10TH ST, MCALLEN, TX 78501, (956) 467-5663) ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO RETRIEVE A FAULT CODE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE MAY BE DUE TO AN EGR FAILURE AS INDICATED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V755000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 99,800.

  I HAVE A 2014 328D F31 THREE WEEKS AGO WHILE TURNING INTO A PARKING SPOT AT A GROCERY STORE PARKING LOT AT LOW SPEED, MY 328D SHIFTED TO P MID TURN, AND THE ENGINE SHUT OFF. UPON TRYING TO RESTART IT, IT WOULD CRANK BUT NOT TURN OVER. (THANKFULLY, I WAS IN A PARKING LOT AND GOING AT SLOW SPEED - AND NOT ON THE INTERSTATE). WE HAD TO MANUALLY GET IT SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL TO BE ABLE TO PUSH IT INTO A PARKING SPOT. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP HAS FAILED. (THANKFULLY IT DOESN'T APPEAR TO BE DISINTEGRATED AS SOME OTHERS HAVE REPORTED). ALL OPEN RECALLS HAVE BEEN REPAIRED. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN VERY WELL MAINTAINED, AND GREAT EFFORTS HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO ENSURE ONLY QUALITY, FRESH DIESEL HAS BEEN PUMPED IN THE CAR. BMW HAS OFFERED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THIS (NOT CHEAP) PART. HOWEVER, IT'S ONLY UP TO 10 YEARS OR 120,000 MILES, AND MY VEHICLE IS AT 128,000. I AM INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL THAT NO ONE WAS HURT, INJURED, OR WORSE IN THIS INCIDENT. BUT GIVEN THE HIGH FREQUENCY OF THIS HAPPENING AMONGST OTHER 328D OWNERS, AND THE SAFETY IMPLICATIONS (MANY TIMES ON THE INTERSTATE), I WOULD EXPECT THAT BMW WOULD RECALL THIS VEHICLE AND GET THESE PARTS REPLACED BEFORE ANYTHING WORSE HAPPENS. IT HAPPENED QUICKLY AND SUDDENLY WITH NO PRIOR PERFORMANCE WARNINGS, CODES, OR LIGHTS. IN FACT WHEN RUNNING A FOXWELL SCHWABEN 14020SCH SCANNER, NO CODES ARE BEING RETURNED. AN ADDITIONAL SAFETY CONCERN OF COURSE IS THAT THIS PROBLEM IS NOT PREVENTABLE WITH TRADITIONAL DIAGNOSTICS. MY GOOGLE RESEARCH SHOWS THE BOSCH FUEL PUMP WAS RECALLED IN OTHER MODELS, BUT THE RECALL EXEMPTED THE DIESEL VARIANTS. I CAN'T IMAGINE AN ITEM PRONE TO FAILURE, THAT'S NOT LISTED ON A REPLACEMENT SCHEDULE. THERE ARE MULTIPLE LAWSUITS OUT THERE ON THE BOSCH CP4 FUEL PUMPS. (HOWEVER CP4.2 SEEMS TO BE MORE RELIABLE THAN THE CP4.1).

The vehicle was towed to the contact’s parents’ residence. The dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer also informed the contact that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V586000 (Fuel System, Diesel); and referred the contact to the manufacturer for further assistance. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for further assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 91,000.

  WHILE PULLING SLOWLY INTO A PARKING LANE IN A RESIDENTIAL PULBIC LOT TO PARK, THE VEHICLE ENTERED INTO A SUDDEN HIGH ACCELERATION WITHOUT ANY DRIVER ADDITONAL INPUT. IT CRASHED ON A TREE AT THE PARKING LOT PERIMETER WITH A MAJOR DAMAGE ON THE VEHICLE FRONT END. IT OCCURRED AT 10:30 AM WITH DRIVER IN GREAT HEALTH CONDITION AND HAD VERY LIMITED TIME TO REACT. NO AIRBAG WAS DEPLOYED NOR ANY PERSONAL INJURY OCCURED.

Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V586000 (Fuel System, Diesel) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 154,000.

  I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK ON NOVEMBER 16TH AND WAS WITHIN A COUPLE MILES OF MY HOUSE WHEN I HEARD A LOUD BANG AND A WHIRRING SOUND COMING FROM MY CAR. THERE WAS AN ERROR MESSAGE THAT POPPED UP STATING DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION, DRIVE CAUTIOUSLY.' THE CAR BECAME VERY JERKY AND I DROVE SLOWLY. I WAS FORTUNATE TO MAKE IT BACK TO MY DRIVEWAY, BUT THEN MY CAR COMPLETELY FAILED. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THE CALLED TO LET ME KNOW THE TRANSFER CASE HAD FAILED. THANKFULLY I WASN'T INJURED IN A CAR WRECK WHEN THE IT FAILED. THE CAR ONLY HAD ABOUT 46,500 MILES AND WAS COMPLETELY COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. I WAS FORTUNATE TO GET HOME, BUT A COMPLETE FAILURE COULD HAVE LED TO BEING STRANDED OR WORSE, AN ACCIDENT.

  While driving our 2014 BMW 328d the engine misfired then stalled on the highway. This was a very dangerous and frightening scenario trying to push it off of the roadway while my wife and children were inside the car while highway traffic on the I-15 interstate rushes by. I was not able to restart, so we had it towed to our local BMW shop. Diagnosed as High Pressure Fuel Pump complete failure. Metallic debris throughout the entire fuel system, lines, tank filter, injectors, pumps. No check engine light or any prior warning. Many of the components have already been disassembled to determine the extent of damage, and all the components are currently with the vehicle, and available for inspection. The vehicle has been at the shop since the end of June. Some parts were initially ordered then all repairs put on hold while awaiting direction/ recall approval from BMW of North America. 5 months later we are being told this vin does not qualify for the safety recall. We can not afford the cost of the repairs and they will likely exceed the value of the car. We also need to remove it from storage at the shop it was towed to, and take it somewhere else while this is sorted out.

FIRST REPAIR CONSISTED OF 2 SENSORS FOR NOX AND 1 FILTERED AIR PIPE. ENGINE LIGHT ON AGAIN AND FOUND HOLE IN MELTED INTAKE MANIFOLD WHICH WAS REPLACED. ENGINE LIGHT REAPPEARED AGAIN. OWNER SUSPECTS EGR COOLER LEAKING INTERNALLY MIXING WITH DIESEL ENGINE SOOT. TOLD THIS TO SERVICE TECH AT BMW OF OCALA AND REPORTED ALSO TO BMW OF NORTH AMERICA. LOOKING TO BE REIMBURSED FOR PAST FAULTY ENGINE REPAIRS AND ASKING FOR RECALL ON VEHICLE FOR THIS ENGINE FAILURE WITH POTENTIAL FOR DEATH AND FIRE HAZARDS. ENGINE FAULT ON SCREEN MESSAGE SAID" DRIVE MODERATELY. MAXIMUM DRIVE TRAIN OUTPUT NOT AVAILABLE. CONSULT SERVICE CENTER"( WHICH I DID AND STILL HAS NOT FIXED IT PROPERLY).

  stall/loss of power while entering highway on ramp. Engine died and would not restart. After inspecting car found the gas tank to be filled with metal shavings which is indicative of a failed high pressure fuel pump. My year make and model vehicle has a recall on the HPFP for the same reason but my VIN was supposedly not affected.

  I STARTED MY CAR ON OCTOBER 23, 2019, DRIVING DOWN THE STREET I NOTICED A LOUD NOISE AND WHEN I STOPPED THE CAR WAS SHAKING, I TURNED AROUND AND WHEN BACK HOME, HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER SAID I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE DUE TO "LACK OF LUBRICATION". I WAS THEN INFORMED IT WOULD COST ME $16,800. WE HAVE 125K MILES ON A DIESEL ENGINE! I WAS TOLD THERE WERE METAL FLAKES IN THE OIL AND NO ONE CAN TELL ME WHAT FAILED IN THE ENGINE. I HAVE FOLLOWED ALL OF THE REQUIRED SERVICES AND HAD ALL OF THE RECALLS DONE WHICH WERE MANY. WE HAVE THE FUEL SYSTEM REPLACED, AFTER THE CAR COMPLETED STALLED AND HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED, LUCKILY THERE WAS A RECALL ON THAT. SINCE WE HAVE HAD THE FUEL SYSTEM REPLACED WE HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS, WE WERE SOLD A LEMON, AND THE BMW COOPERATE OFFICE WILL NOT DO ANYTHING, AND I WAS INFORMED THEY ONLY WARRANTY THEIR CARS TO 50K. NOW I AM OUT A CAR THAT I PAID 50K FOR 5 YEARS AGO. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS REGARDING THE ENGINE, AND WHEN OIL WAS CHECKED ALL LEVELS WERE GOOD.

  WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE ON OCT. 22, 2017 MY VEHICLE TURNED OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD DISPLAYING AN ERROR SAYING "DRIVE TRAIN MALFUNCTION". THE CAR WENT FROM GOING 60MPH TO A DEAD STOP. I WAS STRANDED IN THE ROAD WHILE CARS WERE ZIPPING PAST ME AT LEAST 60MPH. I WAS IN SOME SERIOUS DANGER IF IT WASN'T FOR THE FAST RESPONSE OF THE TOW TRUCK TO GET ME OUT OF THERE (THE POLICE WERE CALLED AS WELL TO DO TRAFFIC CONTROL BUT THE TOW TRUCK SHOWED UP BEFORE THEY EVEN GOT THERE). THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A BMW DEALER. THEY RAN SOME TESTS AND TOLD ME IT WAS A FUEL PUMP PROBLEM. THEY SAID THE FUEL PUMP BROKE INTERNALLY AND DISTRIBUTED METAL SHAVINGS THROUGHOUT MY ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM AND THROUGH MY INJECTORS. ALL 4 INJECTORS NEED REPLACED ALONG WITH THE FUEL RAIL AND THE FUEL PUMP AND REPAIRS MADE TOT THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. MY CAR IS ONLY AT 66K MILES. I DID SOME RESEARCH TO SEE IF THIS PROBLEM WAS RECALLED BECAUSE THIS IS A VERY UNSAFE PROBLEM TO HAVE. AFTER LOOKING, I SAW THAT A RECALL WAS SENT OUT FOR ALL BMW MODELS EXCEPT FOR THE 328D(DIESEL). WHY IS THAT? HOW DO YOU CLAIM SOMETHING IS UNSAFE ON A CAR USING THE SAME PARTS THAT JUST GOT RECALLED BUT EXCLUDED THE DIESEL MODEL. I HAVE READ SOMETHING STATING THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH COMPLAINT TOWARDS THE DIESEL MODEL BUT THE 328D WAS NOT PRODUCED NEARLY AS MUCH AS SAY THE 328I, SO OBVIOUSLY IT WILL HAVE FEWER COMPLAINTS. I CAN SEE RIGHT NOW 5 PAGES OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME SAFETY ISSUE I AM HAVING THAT SAYS OTHERWISE. NOW I AM PAYING UPWARDS OF $16,000 DOLLARS DUE TO A SAFETY ISSUE. THIS DOESN'T SEEM ETHICALLY CORRECT ON ANYONE'S END. HOW IS THERE NO RESOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM? WE ARE GOING TO LET PEOPLE COME TO A COMPLETE STOP ON THE INTERSTATE AN RISK A MAJOR ACCIDENT. I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS HAS SLIPPED THROUGH THE CRACKS WHEN ALL OTHER MODELS WERE RECALLED FOR THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM!!

  In July 2021 I was driving on a residential street when my vehicle experienced loss of power. The vehicle shutdown and stopped in the middle of the road. Mechanic found metal particles in fuel system that may have been cause by fuel pump failure. It was reported to insurance company. The fuel system was replaced but vehicle continues to have issues with leaks etc.

SUDDENLY AS I'M DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD A LIGHT APPEARED THAT SAYS INCORRECT FLUID ADDED NO START AFTER XXX MILES. NOW VEHICLE WILL NO LONGER START. AFTER SEARCHING THE WEB OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE CONNECTED TO NOX SENSOR. TAKING TO SHOP HOPEFULLY COVERED SINCE NOX SENSOR WAS JUST REPLACED FROM A RECALL.

STALL OCCURRED ON BUSY STREET WHICH WAS A NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE THAT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN ACCIDENT / INJURY / DEATH. MOST TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. TOOK CAR TO CREVIER BMW AND DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD HAVE DONE TO PREVENT THE INCIDENT. 2014 2 SERIES, 3 SERIES, AND 4 SERIES ALL HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILURE. THE DIESEL MODEL APPEARS TO BE THE ONLY ONE NOT COVERED IN THE RECALL AND CLEARLY IS DEFECTIVE.

THE FIRST TIME WAS A FEW MONTHS FROM PURCHASING THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER FOUND METAL SHAVINGS IN THE FUEL LINES. THEY REPLACED THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM AND SENT ME OFF. A FEW MONTHS LATER I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE I.E. OIL CHANGE, INSPECTION, ETC. WHILE INSPECTING MY CAR THEY AGAIN FOUND METAL SHAVINGS IN THE FUEL LINES. THEY AGAIN REPLACED THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM AND SAID IT WAS FIXED. JUST THIS WEEKEND SEPTEMBER 30, 2018, I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE ON THE FREEWAY AND AGAIN THE CAR WENT LIMP. NO POWER, LIMITED STEERING CONTROL, NO RESPONSE FROM ACCELERATOR. ESSENTIALLY A CATASTROPHIC EVENT BECAUSE WITHOUT POWER A VEHICLE IS A ROLLING PROJECTILE. ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP THE VEHICLE ONCE AGAIN HAS METAL SHAVINGS IN THE FUEL SYSTEM. TOTAL COUNT FOR REPLACING FUEL SYSTEM (3).

  EGR VALVE LOCKED OPEN, AS SEDIMENT ACCUMULATED IN THE VACUUM LINE FROM THE LEAKING OF ANTI-FREEZE INTO THE VALVE. MANIFOLD DEVELOPED HOLES, AS THE EGR OVERHEATED DUE THE VALVE LOCKING OPEN. THE SMELL OF ANTI-FREEZE AND DIESEL FILLED THE CAR AS SMOKE STARTED COMING FROM THE ENGINE, WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. HAD TO HAVE THE MANIFOLD REPLACED, AS THE MANIFOLD HAD FOUR HOLES IN IT, AND THE EGR VALVE VACUUM LINE HAD TO BE CLEARED. REPORTED THE ISSUE TO KUNI BMW, WHO NEVER REPORTED THE ISSUE AND WARNED ME TO NOT DRIVE THE CAR IN THE CONDITION THAT IT WAS IN BEFORE THE REPAIR. KUNI ALSO SAID THAT THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF AN EGR VALVE ISSUE AND ANTI-FREEZE CAUSING SEDIMENT TO PLUG THE VACUUM LINE. THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE THAT BMW HAS HAD TO ISSUE A RECALL FOR 2015-2017 MODELS IN EUROPE AND S. KOREA. KUNI BMW KNEW OF THE RECALLS IN S. KOREA AND EUROPE WHEN THEY TALKED TO ME. I AM REPORTING THIS TO NTSB, AS BMW NA TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD ONLY MADE A INFORMAL REPORT TO NTSB, AND THEY FELT IT WAS NOT A MAJOR ISSUE. MY CAR ALMOST CAUGHT ON FIRE AND BURNED, WHILE MY PREGNANT WIFE AND DAUGHTER WERE RIDING WITH ME, BUT KUNI REFUSED TO REPORT IT AND BMW DIDN'T CONSIDER IT A BIG ISSUE. SAD. At 145,976 that's an additional 22,315 miles on the 60,000 mile 2015 replacement engine. Total repair costs $3,939.45. 08/23/2024 - Passed inspection, odometer 149,701. 09/09/2024- Only 2 weeks later an estimate of 4,000 miles after replacing injector harness and H/P fuel lines, engine went up in flames, reason unknown. Pictures attached, vehicle was a total loss.

Towed to BMW dealership and was advised needed new engine, at the time it only had 123,661 miles on it. Towed to EurAuto Shop for installation of replacement engine. 02/2020- The shop replaced the ceased OEM engine with a 2015 engine, with only 60,000 miles on it. EurAuto Shop tore down OEM engine and confirmed the timing chain guide broke, resulting in jumped timing and caused valve to hit piston. Total cost for engine replacement $6,641.49.   Diesel Emissions System is producing an error code due to incorrect coding by the manufacturer for US grade Diesel fuel. Check engine light has come on. There are warranties out for the model years just slightly older than mine. I have read many threads with people talking about having the same issue.

  After a drive from Denver to Breckenridge on snowy roads the car was parked in an unplowed parking space. When the car was moved 1 hr later the car had no ABS--flashing on dash, no traction control--flashing on dash and steering was ineffective. Car was only drivable by backing into a space. 20 hrs later the car was to be moved again...again, everything flashed on dash...no ABS, no traction control, drive train failure and car just slid. Steering was totally ineffective. Car was pushed by people on both sides until dry pavement was reached. Car was restarted and I resumed driving on dry pavement back to Denver. Had car "read" by my mechanic and then again by a BMW certified mechanic. No codes were available! The speculation was that my wheel sensors froze. If my Xdrive can't be driven in snow, what's going on. There were two drivers involved in this and both of us reported a total lack of control of the vehicle.

The contact stated that while driving at 45 MPH, the instrument panel alerted him that the rear driver side tire had begun to rapidly deflate. The contact pulled over and discovered that the tire was nearly flat and that the tread had separated from the tire. The contact managed to slowly drive the vehicle home where he replaced all four tires. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The tire failure mileage was approximately 20,000. The vehicle failure mileage was approximately 163,000. The contact stated that the manufacturer was notified via a website and the tires are no longer available.

  High pressure fuel pump failed while BMW dealership mechanic was test-driving car after replacing two tires/oil change/replacing fuel filter/performing fix for recall of egr cooler part; per the service manager at the dealership, metal particles were subsequently found in the quantity control valve, necessitating complete replacement of fuel system. There is a known recall for year, make and model of my car (2014 BMW 328d) for the fuel pump, but apparently my VIN number is not falling under the recall. This issue appears identical to the issue the recall was issued for other cars with this same year/make/model. I have not performed the repair as they are quoting about $17,000 for the fix. There were no warning lights, messages or symptoms of the problem prior to this issue. In addition, they indicated I needed a new o-ring part for the fuel filter they were replacing as it was the wrong part, but they said it had nothing to do with the fuel pump. (Service said the o-ring continued to hold and was working as normal, and they recommended putting the correct by part number o-ring in its place so the fuel filter would not have come unsecured from its fitting in the future. They said the issue with the vehicle did not come from the o-ring/fuel filter; it is by their determination based upon the metal shavings in the quantity control valve, caused because the high pressure pump came apart internally and contaminated your fueling system. They said this is due to age.) They indicated that had the pump failed while I was on the highway or traveling I and/or others could have been seriously injured or killed. No one else has inspected the car at this point and it remains at the dealership for now.

The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where a diagnostic trouble code for the fuel rail sensor was retrieved. Upon inspection, the mechanic discovered metal inside the fuel system due to the high-pressure fuel pump failure.
