- ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANELCampaign 24V051000 · 30/01/2024Over-the-air fix
Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2012-2023 Model S, 2016-2024 Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3, 2019-2024 Model Y, and 2024 Cybertruck vehicles. An incorrect font size is displayed on the instrument panel for the Brake, Park, and Antilock Brake System (ABS) warning lights. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 105, "Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems" and 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."
Risk: Warning lights with a smaller font size can make critical safety information on the instrument panel difficult to read, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Tesla began releasing an over-the-air (OTA) software update, free of charge. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla's number for this recall is SB-24-00-003.
- STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEMCampaign 18V204000 · 29/03/2018
Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2012-2016 Tesla Model S vehicles equipped with Bosch steering racks. The aluminum bolts that attach the power steering gear assist motor to the gear housing may corrode and fracture causing a reduction or complete loss of power steering assist.
Risk: Loss of power steering assist would require a higher steering effort, especially at lower speeds, which may increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Tesla will notify owners, and Tesla Service Centers will replace the steering gear mounting bolts and add a corrosion-preventative sealer, free of charge. The recall began May 7, 2019. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla's number for this recall is SB-18-32-002.
- BACK OVER PREVENTION:SOFTWARECampaign 21V035000 · 29/01/2021
Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2012-2018 Tesla Model S and 2016-2018 Model X vehicles with a center display equipped with a NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor and an 8GB eMMC NAND flash memory device. When the 8GB eMMC NAND flash memory device for the center display reaches lifetime wear, the eMMC controller will no longer be able to maintain the integrity of the filesystem, causing a failure in some of the center display functions.
Risk: The eMMC controller wear-out condition can cause the loss of the rearview camera display, defrost/defog control settings, and exterior turn signal lighting, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Owners should ensure their vehicles are operating firmware release 2020.48.48.12 or newer, which will alert owners if the eMMC is approaching lifetime wear. Tesla will notify owners, and will replace the VCM daughterboard with one containing an enhanced eMMC controller, free of charge. The recall began March 29, 2021. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla's number for this recall is SB-21-21-001.
- SEAT BELTS:FRONT:WARNING LIGHT/DEVICESCampaign 24V376000 · 28/05/2024Over-the-air fix

In the event of an unbelted driver, the seat belt warning light and audible chime may not activate as intended. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Risk: A seat belt warning system that fails to alert occupants of an unbelted seat belt can increase the risk of injury during a crash.
Fix: Tesla will release an over-the-air (OTA) software update. Owner notification letters were mailed July 26, 2024. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla's number for this recall is SB-24-00-008.
- FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS:EXTERNAL/PEDESTRIAN ALERTCampaign 24V153000 · 27/02/2024Over-the-air fix
Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2013, 2018-2021 Model S, 2020-2021 Model X, 2018-2022 Model 3, and 2020-2022 Model Y vehicles. A factory reset muted the Pedestrian Warning System (PWS) sounds. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 141, "Minimum Sound Requirements for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles."
Risk: Pedestrians may be unaware of an approaching vehicle if the PWS sounds are muted, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Tesla released an over-the-air (OTA) software update, release 2023.44.30.14, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 27, 2024. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla's number for this recall is SB-24-00-006.

Risk: If the seat belt is not correctly attached to the pretensioner, it may not properly restrain the seat occupant in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.
Fix: Tesla will notify owners, and service centers will inspect the driver and front passenger seat belts, correcting their connection, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on December 14, 2015. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla's number for this recall is SB-15-20-002.
- PARKING BRAKECampaign 17V260000 · 19/04/2017
Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2016 Model S and Model X vehicles. The electric parking brake calipers have an internal gear that may be improperly manufactured, possibly resulting in the gear fracturing during parking brake application or release.
Risk: If the gear breaks during parking brake release, the vehicle will not be able to be moved. If the gear breaks during parking brake application, the parking brake may not adequately hold the vehicle, potentially resulting in the vehicle rolling, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Tesla will notify owners, and service centers will replace both the left and right electric parking brake calipers, free of charge. The recall began March 6, 2018. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla's number for this recall is SB-17-33-002.

Tesla Motors, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain model year 2013 Model S electric vehicles manufactured May 10, 2013, through June 8, 2013. An improper method for aligning the left hand seat back striker to the bracket may have weakened the weld between the bracket and the frame of the vehicle.
Risk: In the event of a crash, the left hand seat back may not stay mounted, increasing the risk of injury to passengers.
Fix: Tesla will notify owners, and Tesla Service Centers will inspect the left hand second row strikers. Tesla will add additional mounting hardware to ensure a proper joint between the bracket and the frame, free of charge. The recall began on June 24, 2013. Owners may contact Tesla at 1-650-681-5000.
- EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICALCampaign 14V006000 · 13/01/2014Over-the-air fix
Tesla Motors, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain model year 2013 Model S vehicles equipped for, and delivered with, certain NEMA 14-50 (240 volt) Universal Mobile Connector (UMC) adapters. During charging, the adapter, cord, or wall outlet could overheat.
Risk: An overheated adapter, cord, or wall outlet increases the risk of burn injury and/or fire.
Fix: Tesla will notify owners and provide an over-the-air (OTA) software update. Some owners have already received this update. This update allows the Model S on board charging system to detect any unexpected fluctuations in the input power or higher resistance connections to the vehicle. If detected, the onboard charging system will automatically reduce the charging current by 25%. Tesla owners can verify that they have received the updated software (version 5.8.4 or later) by viewing the vehicle's center information screen. Additionally, Tesla will mail owners a replacement NEMA 14-50 adapter that is equipped with an internal thermal fuse. The recall began on March 14, 2014. The contact owns a 2013 Tesla Model S. The contact stated that while driving at 70 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive and electrical power. A warning message stating that the vehicle was about to shut off was illuminated. The contact swerved to the right, attempting to veer to the side of the road on the right lane; however, the vehicle stopped midway and a semi-truck almost crashed into the rear passenger’s side of the vehicle. The contact pushed the vehicle into a nearby parking lot with assistance. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the battery had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer advised the contact that they had replaced the battery with a new battery; however, the failure reoccurred, and the battery was replaced for a second time. The Department of Auto Motor Repair of California investigated and informed the contact that the dealer had kept his original battery and the third battery that the dealer installed in the vehicle was not new. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer who replaced the third battery with the original one; however, the failure reoccurred. The dealer replaced the original battery with an upgraded battery. The contact also stated that the hood would not close securely. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not repaired. The vehicle was towed to a second dealer; Tesla (7077 W Sahara Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89117) who repaired the vehicle. The contact stated that the rear passenger’s side door would fail to close. The vehicle was towed twice to the second dealer and was finally repaired. The contact stated that the center display of the vehicle would inadvertently turn off while driving. The contact stated that the failure had prevented him from using the rearview camera or have control of the door switches and some features of the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.

ALLEGEDLY: A TESLA OWNER AWOKE TO THE SMELL OF BURNING ELECTRICAL. SHE CALLED 911. A FIRE FIGHTER WAS INJURED RESPONDING TO THE GARAGE FIRE. FIRE INVESTIGATORS SUSPECT THAT THE ORIGIN OF THE FIRE WAS THE WALL SOCKET OR THE TESLA UNIVERSAL MOBILE CONNECTOR FROM THE TESLA CHARGING SYSTEM PLUGGED INTO THE WALL OUTLET. I'VE SEEN EVIDENCE OF MANY OF TESLA'S CHARGING CONNECTIONS FAIL. EVEN IF THE CONNECTION FAILED AT THE WALL SOCKET, I WOULDN'T RULE OUT THE TESLA DESIGN AS A CAUSE OR A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR. THE DESIGN OF THE TYPICAL TESLA CHARGING CONFIGURATION PUTS UNDUE STRESS ON THE WALL SOCKET, WHICH COULD CONTRIBUTE TO A FAILURE OF A WALL SOCKET. IN MY OPINION SOME OF THE TESLA CHARGING CONNECTIONS ARE NOT ROBUST ENOUGH FOR THE POTENTIAL CURRENTS INVOLVED. MANY OF TESLA'S CHARGE CONNECTIONS ARE KNOWN FOR PRODUCING EXCESSIVE HEAT. *TR

LATER MODEL TESLAS HAVE A REDESIGNED KNUCKLE THAT IS MORE STURDY BUT EVEN THAT ONE HAS HAD INCIDENTS IN WHICH THE TIP HAS BROKEN OFF OR THE BALL JOINT HAS POPPED APART. MY MODEL S WAS CHARGING IN MY GARAGE WHEN MY SMOKE DETECTOR WENT OFF. I RAN TO THE GARAGE AND SAW PLUMES OF SMOKE COMING FROM THE TESLA NEMA 14-50 ADAPTER. THE CAR WAS STILL CHARGING! I UNPLUGGED THE CHARGER FROM THE CAR AND YANKED THE CHARGER ADAPTER PLUG FROM THE OUTLET. THE NEMA 14-50 ADAPTER FUSED TO CORD. THE ADAPTER HAD A HOLE ON ONE SIDE WHERE IT WAS MELTING. I CALLED TESLA AND THEY SENT OUT SOMEONE WITH A NEW MOBILE CHARGER AND NEMA 14-50 ADAPTER. I AM NOT SURE HOW I FEEL ABOUT USING THIS ADAPTER AGAIN. THE BREAKER NEVER TRIPPED NOR DID THE CAR GENERATE ANY ERROR OR SHUT OFF CHARGING. I HAD THE ELECTRICIAN COME OUT AND INSPECT THE OUTLET. IN JUNE 2019 I NOTICED THE CONTROL SCREEN OF MY 2013 TESLA MODEL S GOING BLANK RANDOMLY WHILE THE CAR WAS IN MOTION AND THEN RE-ACTIVATING AFTER MINUTES, HOURS OR UNTIL THE CAR SAT BEFORE BEING DRIVEN AGAIN. THIS CONTINUES AND I AM UNABLE TO ACCESS THE SCREEN TO SELECT THE BACKUP CAMERA AS THE SCREEN FREEZES AND DOES NOT ALLOW USE OF ANY FEATURES. PERIODICALLY THE SIDE VIEW MIRRORS WILL NOT EXTEND WHILE DRIVING UNTIL WE HAVE DRIVEN FOR 5 TO 30 MINUTES. I HAVE REPORTED THE SCREEN BLANKING ISSUE AND MIRRORS TO TESLA SERVICE IN SYOSSET NY AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT IS RELATED TO MY MODEL S BEING AN OLDER MODEL WITH AN OLDER COMPUTER THAT HAS TO 'CATCH UP' TO WHAT IS BEING SELECTED ON THE SCREEN. THE SOFTWARE IT IS RUNNING IS REALLY INTENDED FOR NEWER MODELS THAT HAVE A FASTER COMPUTER. I WAS TOLD THAT SINCE THE CAR WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY, TESLA WOULD HAVE TO CHARGE ME TO DIAGNOSE THIS PROBLEM AND WOULD PROBABLY REACH THE CONCLUSION THAT TESLA SERVICE TOLD ME. I RECENTLY READ ABOUT TESLA'S WARRANTY ADJUSTMENT PROGRAM: TOUCHSCREEN COMPONENT ' 8GB EMBEDDED MULTIMEDIACARD (EMMC) IN MEDIA CONTROL UNIT (MCU). IT APPEARS THAT WHAT IS DESCRIBED IN THIS WARRANTY ADJUSTMENT IS IDENTICAL TO THE SYMPTOMS WITH MY TESLA AS I AM UNABLE TO ACCESS THE SAFETY FEATURES, REAR CAMERA AND SIDE VIEW MIRRORS. MY CAR HAS 113,500 MILES AND THE PROGRAM ONLY COVERS CARS WITH LESS THAN 100,000 MILES. I FEEL THAT I WAS MISLED BY TESLA SERVICE AS I REPORTED THIS PROBLEM PRIOR TO THE CAR GOING OVER 100,000 MILES AND WAS ADVISED THAT THIS WAS NOT AN ISSUE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. IT SEEMS THAT TESLA IS AVOIDING A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH OLDER MODEL S CARS SUCH AS MINE. I BELIEVE TESLA SHOULD REPLACE THE MCU UNIT OF MY MODEL S FOR NO CHARGE AS THEY KNEW THIS PROBLEM EXISTED AND MISLED ME TO THINK THAT THE ISSUES WITH MY BACKUP CAMERA AND MIRRORS WAS NOT RELATED TO ANY ISSUES WITH THE MODEL S.

When driving out of parking lot I turned on to the main road and was going about 20 mph when the front hood of car ( Tesla calls this the frunk) came open and raised up to a vertical position completely blocking my view. Fortunately I was going slowly and was able to pull off to the right shoulder and stop. I then was able to close this hood and continue home. Nothing appears damaged. I have no idea how or why this happened. There is no safety catch on this hood to keep it from flying open if the latch fails for some reason or another. Further more on the screen there is a button that can be pushed to open this front hood. I have not opened this front hood for several months. Further I don't know if this button will open the front hood if the car is in motion. If this front hood had come open while the car was moving at a high speed I could have lost control and been killed. I have owned many cars and have never seen one that did not have a safety catch on the front hood to prevent it from opening if the main catch was unlocked. This is a serious safety defect and Tesla should be required to recall any of its cars that do not have a safety catch feature holding the front hood from coming up unless released by a person standing in from of car and unlatching it by hand. Further the button on the screen should not be able to release the front hood if the car is moving. Lastly if this release button is pushed there should be some kind of audible warning to the driver that the front hood is not latched properly or the car should not be able to move forward if this front hood is not properly latched.

The rear view camera did not deploy when I was backing out of a driveway and I was struck by another vehicle. The police determined it was a no-fault accident. My insurance company deemed me primarily responsible. I was unable to see any oncoming traffic because the camera was not working and there were obstacles to seeing oncoming traffic. The car was deemed totaled by the mechanic and my insurance company. The car battery died soon after the accident and the vehicle remains in my garage and is immovable. I sustained minor head, neck and back injuries.

DUE TO A FIRMWARE UPGRADE THAT WAS PERFORMED BY THE DEALER WHEN REPLACING MY MCU, MY TOTAL BATTERY RANGE WAS REDUCED FROM 249 MILES TO 213 MILES INITIALLY. THROUGH FURTHER UPDATES THE RANGE INCREASED TO 220 MILES AND THIS IS AN ACKNOWLEDGED ISSUE BY TESLA THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY BATTERY REPLACEMENT WITH A BATTERY THAT HAS AT LEAST THE ACTUAL RANGE I HAD BEFORE THE UPDATE (~250 MILES) OR BETTER. IF THE MODEL S 85 BATTERY IS A FIRE RISK AT THE RANGE CUSTOMERS WERE QUOTED, THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL BECAUSE THROUGH PURCHASE OF A VEHICLE, THE RANGE AND SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE GUARANTEED SIMULTANEOUSLY AND NOT THROUGH A FIRMWARE UPGRADE I DIDN'T EVEN REQUEST. WE OWN A 2013 TESLA MODEL S 85, REAR WHEEL DRIVE, NO AUTOPILOT. AS VEHICLE AGED, THE STEERING WAS NOTICEABLY VAGUE AND THE VEHICLE BECAME "DARTY" ON THE HIGHWAY, SEEMINGLY WANTING TO DRIVE OUT OF THE CURRENT LANE ON ITS OWN. THIS DARTINESS BECAME WORSE AND WORSE OVER TIME, AND ALSO WAS WORSE WHEN ACCELERATING OR DECELERATING. WE FIRST ALERTED THE DEALER OF THE PROBLEM IN AUG 2019, AND THEY REPLACED FEW COMPONENTS IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION (BOTH UPPER CONTROL ARMS AND THE RIGHT FORELINK) AND CHARGED US $1571+TAX FOR PARTS AND LABOR. THE STEERING SEEMED A LITTLE BETTER FOR A WHILE, BUT IN JAN 2020 WE BROUGHT THE CAR BACK IN WITH CONCERNS ABOUT VAGUE STEERING AND THE DEALER RECOMMENDED A WHEEL ALIGNMENT, WHICH WE PAID FOR. THE ALIGNMENT YIELDED NO IMPROVEMENT AND THE CAR BECAME INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT TO DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY, REQUIRING CONSTANT STEERING ADJUSTMENTS TO KEEP IN ITS LANE. WE BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER IN MAY 2020, AND BY THIS TIME THE DEALER VERBALLY AGREED THAT THE CAR WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE IN ITS CURRENT STATE. THEY REPLACED BOTH REAR LOWER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLIES AND CHARGED US $1382+TAX, BUT THIS STILL DID NOT RESOLVE THE DARTINESS. WE RETURNED TO THE DEALER LATER IN MAY 2020, AND THEY RECOMMENDED REPLACING NEARLY EVERY OTHER SUSPENSION PART, INCLUDING BOTH REAR TOE LINKS, BOTH REAR UPPER LINKS, BOTH FRONT AFT LINKS, THE FRONT FORE LINK THAT WASN'T PREVIOUSLY REPLACED. THE COST FOR THIS WAS A $1870+TAX. FORTUNATELY, THE STEERING ISSUES DID NOT RESULT IN ANY ACCIDENTS. SINCE THIS LAST REPAIR, THE CAR NOW DRIVES RELATIVELY NORMALLY FOR A 7 1/2 YEAR OLD CAR. WE ARE REPORTING OUR EXPERIENCE AFTER WE LEARNED THAT THE NHTSA IS INVESTIGATING A SERIES OF OTHER SUSPENSION-RELATED CONCERNS WITH TESLA MODEL S CARS. WE BELIEVE IT IS UNREASONABLE FOR A CAR TO BECOME UNSAFE TO DRIVE IN 7 YEARS SUBJECTED ONLY TO NORMAL PERSONAL USE.

I bought a used, but well cared for, gently used and properly maintained, 2013 Model S P85 from an individual in CT on Oct 8, 2022 with 77937 miles on it. I had the car about a month and a half of normal use when it ran well with zero issues, which included driving all the way from NY to VT over Thanksgiving at highway speeds with no issue. When back in my own town and making just a few turns to get to work on local roads on 11/28/22, I found myself losing control of the steering column and going off the road at a very low speed. The only indication that something was wrong was the traction light that came on just before I couldn't steer anymore and luckily found my way off to a soft shoulder. The front right tire was tilted in significantly and the car required a tow, and then a whole series of expensive and extensive repairs effectively replacing all components of a failed suspension system, starting with a broken control arm on that front left side. The incident left me shaken. Even when I get my car back, assuming I can find a way to pay for this (currently $4K+), I am now not very confidant in the new but insufficient suspension parts, learning that so many other cases exist and there's a class action being filed against Tesla for insufficient strength of these parts to sustain the torque of the Teslas. This car wasn't subjected to any accident or abnormal use, it was only driven as intended. The damages however were extreme and sudden. I've included the current invoice from the dealer on the repairs, which grew daily as they investigated further, photos of the car tire and it being towed, and messages between myself and the Tesla service center. Thank you for your consideration.

I WAS DRIVING MY TESLA MODEL S EARLY IN THE MORNING IN A QUIET NEIGHBORHOOD WHEN WAS SLOWLY APPROACHING TO FOUR-WAY STOP SIGN INTERSECTION BY GRADUALLY STEP ON THE BRAKE. AT THE VERY BEGINNING, I CAN FEEL THE CAR DECELERATED, SUDDENLY THERE WAS UNINTENDED ACCELERATION THAT I FELT. THERE WAS A JERKING FORWARD OF THE CAR, SO I WAS NOT ABLE TO MAKE A FULL STOP AT THE STOP SIGN. THEN THE SPEED DROPS DOWN SIGNIFICANTLY, ALMOST TO ZERO. I PRESSED THE FLASHING LIGHT BECAUSE THERE WAS A LINE OF CARS BEHIND ME AND I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. THE CAR WAS IN ALMOST ZERO SPEED, SO I TRIED TO MOVE THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND PRESSED THE ACCELERATION PEDAL A LITTLE. THE CAR DIDN'T ACCELERATE, INSTEAD, IT TURNED INTO A STOP SITUATION. I REALIZED I LOST DRIVING POWER OF THIS CAR. I PRESSED THE "P" BUTTON, THEN ALL FOUR MODE LETTERS "P", "N", "R", "D" TURNED RED, BLICKING. THE CAR STOPPED CLOSE TO THE CURB BUT PARTIALLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE CAR AND CALLED TESLA ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE. THEY CHECKED SOME LOG AND RESPONDED WITH TOWING SERVICE TO SEND THE CAR TO THE SERVICE CENTER. THE OVERALL SITUATION COULD HAVE TURNED VERY SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE IF EVER THIS HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY, OR THERE WAS HUMAN BEING WALKING ACROSS THE STREET WHILE I WAS NOT ABLE TO FULLY STOP THE CAR, NEITHER CONTROL IT. I AM WAITING FOR OFFICIAL SERVICE REPORT BUT THE CAR IS CONFIRMED NOT IN DRIVABLE CONDITION. AND I FEEL EXTREMELY UNSAFE TO DRIVE IT NOW AND EVEN NOT COMFORTABLE TO DRIVE IT AFTER WHAT JUST HAPPENED THIS MORNING. THE ENTIRE DRIVE UNIT WAS MAINTAINED AND CHANGED TO A NEW ONE IN 2015, SO ITS LIFE ONLY ABOUT 3 YEARS IN THIS CAR. PLUS, I JUST HAD THE CAR SERVICE AT THE TESLA SERVICE CENTER MONTH AGO. IT IS WORRISOME THEY CAN'T EVEN PREVENT SUCH ISSUE AND DETECT IT IN AN EARLY STAGE, PERHAPS A DESIGN ISSUE TO ADDRESS?

THIS HAS SEVERE IMPACT TO DAILY COMMUTE AND ABILITY TO UTILIZE THE CAR. MY UNDERSTANDING IS STARTING WITH A SOFTWARE UPDATE IN MAY 2019, TESLA CAPPED THE MAX VOLTAGE THE HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY WOULD CHARGE TO. THEY CLAIM THEY DID THIS "OUT OF AN ABUNDANCE OF CAUTION" AFTER SEVERAL NON-CRASH FIRES HAPPENED TO THESE MODELS. SUMMARY: VEHICLE TPMS HAS BEEN DISABLED DUE TO A SOFTWARE REVISION. TESLA RELEASED V10 SOFTWARE FOR MODEL S VEHICLES. 2012-2014 CARS HAVE A LEGACY TPMS SYSTEM WHICH THE PREVIOUS SOFTWARE ALLOWED THE USER TO RESET THE TPMS, IF AN ERROR OCCURRED OR A DIFFERENT WHEEL/TIRE COMBINATION WAS SWAPPED FOR THE SEASON. ONCE THE RESET BUTTON WAS PRESSED THE SYSTEM WOULD LEARN THE NEW SENSORS AND THE ERROR WOULD RESET. THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE RESET BUTTON HAS BEEN REMOVED TO ACCOMODATE NEWER CARS WITH A NEWER, SMARTER TPMS SYSTEM FROM CONTINENTAL. THIS NEW SYSTEM SIMPLY REQUIRES YOU TO START DRIVING, AND IT AUTO LEARNS THE NEW SENSORS. VERSION 10 FAILS TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF THE OLDER CARS WITH THE OLDER TPMS SYSTEM. AS IT STANDS NOW, THERE IS NO WAY FOR THE USER TO RESET THE TPMS, THUS OWNERS ARE DRIVING AROUND WITH A DISABLED, FEDERALLY MANDATED SAFETY SYSTEM. TESLA HAS ENCOURAGED OWNERS TO UPGRADE OLDER CARS TO THE NEWER SYSTEM AT SIGNIFICANT EXPENSE, WHEN ALL WE NEED IS THE ORIGINAL FUNCTIONALITY OF THE RESET BUTTON THAT WAS PART OF THE VEHICLES ORIGINAL CONFIGURATION.

Screen behind steering wheel that displays Speedometer goes black from time to time. Am told by a Tesla tech that this issue is related to outdated MCU1 hardware and that a 1500 upgrade to MCU2 hardware will resolve the issue. The current software that runs on 9 year old hardware (same chips are used from 2012-early 2018) is too bloated and causes usability issues that create unsafe driving conditions. It is imperative that speed, climate control and other functions that MCU handles have 100% uptime, especially when the vehicle is in motion. This is only possible by a hardware upgrade that can run Tesla’s latest software (which is automatically pushed several times per year). Right now, Tesla will sell customers an upgraded MCU for $1500-2000, depending on vehicle. This MCU can handle the latest software that inevitably finds its way to every Tesla vehicle through automatic updates. Customers should not have to pay $2000 to maintain basic features, such as timely vehicle power up, reliable speedometer and climate controls, and consistently performing music playing. I have had dozens of issues with MCU performance over the 5year ownership period. NHTSA should do a performance and reliability evaluation of a model S or X with MCU 1 vs MCU 2 and use this data as evidence to demand Tesla recall for all 2018 and earlier vehicles with MCU 1. Common issues include: 1. Waiting 30-90 seconds for vehicle to power up and become drivable. This is especially concerning when driver needs to move vehicle in a timely fashion (think of scenario with impending danger). 2. Either of 2 screens going blank for 2-30 minutes, including while driving. This creates anxiety and distraction for a driver loosing gauges and loss of vehicle controls 3. Inability to change climate control, especially in dangerous conditions Think of the vehicles core functions and controls relying on iPhone 4 hardware !

THE ERROR MESSAGE "TOUCHSCREEN UNRESPONSIVE: PRESS SCROLL WHEELS ON STEERING WHEEL UNTIL IT RESTARTS" WILL APPEAR ON THE DISPLAY BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL. THE TOUCHSCREEN REQUIRES SEVERAL MINUTES TO RESTART. THIS PROBLEM MATCHED THE DESCRIPTION OF THE RECENT NOTICE FROM TESLA ABOUT THE EMMC (EMBEDDED MULTI-MEDIA-CARD MEMORY) FAILURES. TESLA SERVICE WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THIS IN DECEMBER 2020 WITH A REQUEST TO DIAGNOSE IF THE EMMC NEEDS REPLACED. I lost power steering with 64,850 miles on the odometer. I was told the steering rack ($2750) and the front left body harness assembly ($525) needed to be replaced because of corrosion. These figures do not include labor and taxes. While I'm aware of the recall related to replacing the steering bolts to fix a corrosion problem (already fixed), this fix was not covered. I was very annoyed that this fix also included replacing the harness assembly, because the labor charge was 3 times the price of the harness assembly. This problem occurred in the morning after the car was parked in the driveway overnight and as soon as I turned the wheel, I head a slight pop and had NO power steering. The two line fault was "Steering assist reduced" "Steering may require increased effort". I'm glad this did not occur while negotiating a turn at speed because it's extremely difficult to manually steer a 4750 pound car without any power assist. I asked to keep the old parts, but I was only given the old steering rack and not the old harness assembly. The old steering rack looks slightly dirty, but other than that it appears fine and is available for inspection.
