Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Sonata and Santa Fe Sport vehicles. Machining errors during the engine manufacturing process may cause premature bearing wear within the engine.

Risk: Bearing wear may result in the engine seizing, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine, replacing the engine short block, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began June 2017. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 162.

  • ENGINECampaign 18V934000 · 28/12/2018

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Sonata and 2013-2014 Santa Fe Sport vehicles previously repaired under recall numbers 15V-568 and 17V-226. The high pressure fuel pipe that connects to the fuel pump outlet may have been damaged, misaligned, or improperly torqued during the engine replacement procedure, allowing fuel to leak from the pipe.

Risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pipe, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 1, 2019. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's recall number for this recall is 180.

  • FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGSCampaign 20V121000 · 28/02/2020

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Sonata vehicles. The low pressure fuel hose that connects the low pressure fuel pump to the direct injection fuel pump may crack over time due to heat generated within the engine compartment.

Risk: If the fuel line cracks, a fuel leak can occur, increasing the risk of a fire.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the low-pressure fuel hose for damage or leaking, replacing it as necessary. If no damage or leaking is found, heat-protective tape will be installed. Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began August 10, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 189. This recall has been replaced by NHTSA recall number 22V-314.

  • SEAT BELTS:PRETENSIONERCampaign 18V137000 · 27/02/2018

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2013 Sonata and 2011-2012 Sonata Hybrid vehicles. On February 27, 2018, Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) notified NHTSA that they were recalling 154,753 model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. On April 18, 2018, Hyundai expanded the recall to include an additional 425,305 model year 2012-2013 Sonata and 2011-2012 Sonata Hybrid vehicles. In the event of a crash, the air bag control unit (ACU) may short circuit, preventing the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags from deploying.

Risk: If the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags are disabled, there is an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants in the event of a vehicle crash that necessitates deployment of these safety systems.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will install an external wire filter kit, free of charge. The recall began October 15, 2018. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 174.

  • AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOWCampaign 12V352000 · 24/07/2012

Hyundai is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Hyundai Sonata passenger cars, manufactured from January 24, 2012, through June 21, 2012. The curtain side airbags on these vehicles may inflate without deployment command due to an error during manufacturing.

Risk: The curtain airbag may inflate without deployment command and increase the risk of injury to occupants of the vehicle. Additionally, an unexpected deployment would be a significant driver distraction and would limit the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Hyundai dealers will notify owners, and dealers will replace the curtain side airbags free of charge. This recall began on August 31, 2012. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.

  • POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONCampaign 14V434000 · 18/07/2014

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, through May 29, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the transmission shift cable may detach from from the shift lever pin.

Risk: If the transmission shift cable detaches, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver parks the vehicle, despite selecting the 'PARK' position, the transmission may not be in 'PARK.' If the vehicle is not in the 'PARK' position and the parking brake is not applied, there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, repair the connection between the shift cable and shift lever, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 123.

Risk: In the event of a crash, if the seat belts detach from the anchor pretensioners, it can increase the risk of injury.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners and dealers will inspect the connection between the seat belt linkages and the seat belt anchor pretensioners, repairing them as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 7, 2017. Owner's may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for the recall is 160.

I started smelling a little gas in the 20th. And on the 21st it got a lot worse so I took it to the dealership. This is the same place that replaced the engine because it failed and it was a recall. I let them know of the recall and they said it is not covered. They told me it was the high-pressure fuel line that connects to the pump. I have provided a picture of what the tech said.

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that upon placing the vehicle into the (R) reverse position; the vehicle independently accelerated backward into her neighbor's driveway and hit two parked vehicles. The vehicle came to a stop when it crashed into the second vehicle and that second parked vehicle was deemed destroyed. The air bags did not deploy upon impact. No injuries were reported and a police report was filed. The contact was able to drive the vehicle back across the street and parked the vehicle on the road. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed her that since her vehicle was involved in an assurance claim, they could not render any assistance. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and informed her that an investigation could not be performed unless she signed a waiver. The vehicle had yet to be repaired and remained in the possession of the contact. The failure mileage was 76,876.

THE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. BROKE DOWN WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET. THE CAR HAS LESS THAN 80000 MILES. I GAVE THIS CAR TO MY SON SO EVIDENTLY THE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY IS GONE. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT THIS ENGINE SHOULD HAVE LASTED LONGER. THAT IS WHAT HYUNDAI CLAIMS.

  • 12/29/2025· STRUCTURE

About a year ago, I went out one morning, and the Rear Passenger Door would not engage or open. I tried using the key fob, as well as manual lock, trying to lock and unlock, and it still would not open. No one can get into the car from the outside. No one can get out of the car from the inside. This especially is very dangerous. Nothing has changed. I would like Hyundai to repair my door, since it is inoperable. In case of accident, fire, or other reason, someone would be locked in to their detriment.

  • 12/29/2021· ENGINE

My vehicle will suddenly drop in speed regardless of increasing gas, by adding pressure to the gas pedal. It is also making an odd noise from the engine. I took it to the mechanic who stated that they heard the noise but it was beyond their scope and I should take it to the dealer. I called the service department and told them the problem and also mentioned the lifetime engine warranty that Hyundai was pressured to offer. This was the statement for Hyundai at the Mall of Georgia. "Hyundai engine warranty is only on blown push rods." I stated what happens if the car suddenly dies or engine blows while driving 70mph on Interstate 85. All power being lost causing an accident and injuring or killing people. He stated, "I'm just telling you what Hyundai said!" This will cost Hyundai much more than engine replacement. I am suppose to here from them 12/30. I have been wait for two weeks after being put off twice. Please address for saving lives. Sending copies to media as well. • 12/29/2016· STEERING

THE STEERING OF THE CAR, ESPECIALLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS REQUIRES CONSTANT CORRECTION TO KEEP CENTERED. IT DOES NOT PULL TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT LIKE WHEN A VEHICLE IS OUT OF ALIGNMENT. WHEN THE WHEEL IS CENTERED IT FEELS "STICKY", WHICH CAUSES THE CAR TO JERK TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT AS CORRECTIONS ARE NEEDED TO STAY CENTERED. THE INFAMOUS STEERING COUPLER HAS BEEN REPLACED WHEN IT WAS AT ITS' WORST. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO TAMERON HYUNDAI IN HOOVER, AL AND THE STEERING MODE WAS SET TO GLS, BUT DID NOT IMPROVE STEERING. I TOOK THE CAR BACK A SECOND TIME TO BE EVALUATED, AND THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN DEEMED IT "NORMAL OPERATION".

  • 12/29/2015· VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

ON DECEMBER 9, 2015 I WAS ON ROUTE 9 DRIVING SOUTH, THE SPEED LIMIT IS 40 MPH, I APPLIED THE BRAKE, AS A SCHOOL BUS WAS STOPPED IN FRONT OF ME TO DROP OFF A CHILD, THE ACCELERATOR WAS RACING, I KEPT PUSHING ON THE BRAKE AND THE CAR FINALLY STOPPED. I WAS A FEW INCHES FROM THE BACK OF THE BUS. FORTUNATELY NO ACCIDENT. THEN ON DECEMBER 24, 2015, I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING LOT APPLYING THE BRAKE AND AGAIN THE CAR ACCELERATOR WAS GOING SO FAST, I PICKED MY FOOT UP AND SLAMMED IT ON THE BRAKE AND THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP.THE CAR SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS GOING TO TAKE OFF, IT WAS RACING SO FAST. I PUT THE GEAR INTO NEUTRAL AND THE CAR ROLLED ANOTHER HALF A CAR LENGTH INTO A LANE BUT FORTUNATELY NO ONE WAS THERE. AGAIN NO ACCIDENT BUT IT SCARED THE YOU KNOW WHAT OUT OF ME. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER THE FOLLOWING MONDAY AND THEY HOOKED IT UP TO THE COMPUTER AND ROAD TESTED IT AND TOLD ME EVERYTHING WAS FINE AND NOTHING WAS WRONG. I STARTED RAISING MY VOICE AND TOLD HIM YOU ARE [XXX] LUCKY I WASN'T IN AN ACCIDENT. BUT I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR. IT ONLY HAS 30,000 MILES ON IT. THE CONSUMER STATED THE SPORADIC ACCELERATION OCCURRED 7 TIMES. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE DATES ARE 12/15/2015, 12/28/2015, 1/16/16, 4/18/16, 6/24/16, 6/30/16, AND 7/9/16. *JS INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

  • 12/29/2012· SUSPENSION

I JUST PURCHASED A 2013 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CAR TENDS TO WANDER ON THE HIGHWAY MOSTLY LEFT BUT SOMETIMES RIGHT. IT WILL NOT STAY STRAIGHT. I HAVE ALREADY BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALER TWICE AND THEY TELL ME THAT IT IS WITHIN SPEC. AT FIRST THEY TRIED TO TELL ME THAT IT WAS BECAUSE I WAS NOT USED TO ELECTRIC STEERING. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. I HAVE TEST DRIVEN OTHER VEHICLES WITH THIS TYPE OF STEERING THAT DO NOT EXHIBIT WANDERING ON THE HIGHWAY. I FOUND OUT BELATEDLY THAT THIS PROBLEM WAS MUCH WORSE IN THE 2011 AND 2012 MODEL YEARS AND THAT THEY IMPLEMENTED A FIX. WELL THE FIX DOESN'T WORK. IN ADDITION WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A SLOW SPEED THE CAR WILL PULL LEFT. THE DEALER HAS REFERRED ME TO HYUNDAI CORPORATE WHERE I HAVE OPENED A CASE NUMBER. THEY NOW TELL ME THAT THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO SINCE THE DEALER SAYS IT IS OPERATING IN SPEC. *TR

I EXPERIENCED AN UNEXPLAINED, UNCONTROLLED VEHICLE ACCELERATION. I STARTED THE VEHICLE, MOVED THE GEAR SHIFT TO DRIVE AND IT IMMEDIATELY ACCELERATED OUT OF CONTROL. I WAS UNABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE AS IT RACED ACROSS A PARKING LOT, JUMPED A CURB, RAN UP AND THEN BACK DOWN AN EMBANKMENT AND CROSSED BACK ACROSS THE PARKING LOT UNTIL THE ACCELERATION CEASED. I REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO HYUNDAI AMERICA AND THEY HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED. THEIR RESPONSE WAS "WE WERE UNABLE TO FIND ANY MALFUNCTIONS OR DEFECTS THAT WOULD HAVE CAUSED THE ACCIDENT AS YOU ALLEGE. NOR WAS OUR INSPECTOR ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE CONDITION THAT YOU INDICATED CAUSED THE ACCIDENT. ACCORDINGLY, WHILE WE SYMPATHIZE WITH YOU ABOUT THE INCIDENT, FROM THE INFORMATION WE HAVE, WE MUST RESPECTFULLY DENY ANY LIABILITY IN CONNECTION WITH THE INCIDENT."

WHILE CAR WAS ACCELERATING ON THE INTERSTATE A LOUD KNOCKING NOISE BEGAN. THE ENGINE NOISE CONTINUED TO GROW. I STOPPED MOMENTARILY FOR AN APPOINTMENT PRAYING THE CAR WOULD START. WHEN I CAME BACK OUT IT DID RESTART BUT THE ENGINE NOISE WAS WORSE, I CALLED THE LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP & DESCRIBED THE SITUATION. I INFORMED THEM I WOULD BE DRIVING THE CAR TO THEM. NOT ONCE DID THEY MENTION ENGINES SEIZING IN THIS MAKE! I PROCEEDED TO GET BACK ON THE INTERSTATE AND ACCELERATE WITH INCREASING KNOCKING OF THE ENGINE. THE CAR THEN STRUGGLED TO ACCELERATE, AND ALL DASH LIGHTS BLINKED, THEN SHUT COMPLETELY DOWN AND STARTED SMOKING. I HAD TO COAST THE CAR OFF OF THE VERY BUSY & DANGEROUS INTERSTATE. NOT SAFE AT ALL! THE CAR WOULD NOT TURN BACK ON. THE CAR WAS TOWED BY AAA TO THE DEALERSHIP AND I'M STILL WAITING TO HEAR FROM THEM. *TR

  • 12/27/2024· STEERING

My wife and I bought a new 2013 Hyundai Sonata GLS in August of 2013, which is now over eleven years ago. In late September 2024, with still fewer than 100,000 miles on the car, I noticed a snapping sensation/clunk sound in its steering column when changing the direction of steering (from left to right/right to left.) I researched this symptom and, with the confirmation of a Hyundai Dealer's Service Manager, diagnosed the problem as a failing soft coupler between the car's steering column and "Motor Driven Power Steering" motor. NHTSA is aware of the problem, and Hyundai was compelled to issue an elusively brief warranty extension. Having taken delivery of the car over 10 years ago, that warranty extension does us no good, and I'm being told that at the Hyundai Dealer, the job will cost us between four and six hundred dollars, including a complete wheel alignment they say will be made necessary by the repair. I found that a modestly skilled, able bodied, and properly equipped "shade tree mechanic" can buy an aftermarket replacement of this soft coupling for less than fifteen dollars and, with care and a little luck, can complete the repair for ostensibly less than that. (...Unless the job truly creates a need for a wheel alignment.) Since learning all of this, while I've considered whether my bad back is up to the cost-saving job, we've needed to keep driving the car. I estimate we've put another 1,600 miles on it and, especially lately, the coupler's deterioration has obviously been accelerating. My wife and I have agreed I'd best not tackle this as a DIY project so, at Great Lakes Hyundai in Streetsboro, Ohio, we have an appointment for its replacement and subsequent wheel alignment, but we worry about it lasting until then. We feel lucky to be able to afford the ESTIMATED costs, but shouldn't have to. This is a premature and DANGEROUS component failure. A recall should be issued. Hyundai should pay for all of it. ~ [XXX] , Ohio INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

IT IS AN ONGOING STEERING PROBLEM. THE CAR CANNOT BE CENTERED ON THE ROAD (CONTINUOUSLY DRIFTS LEFT OR RIGHT). THE HIGHER THE SPEED, THE MORE PRONOUNCED AND DANGEROUS THE PROBLEM. I HAD THE CAR TO TWO DIFFERENT HYUNDAI DEALERS AND WAS TOLD THEY WERE AWARE OF THE SITUATION BUT NOTHING COULD BE DONE TO CORRECT IT. Engine failure driving on the freeway. Many of the clusters in the dash suddenly lite up, check engine light also multiple warning lights.Suddenly vehicle would not accelerate. Feels like my life as well as my passengers were put at risk. Cars suddenly passing us at freeway speeds. As I pulled to the shoulder of cars were very close to hitting ours. Then when we pulled over we saw smoke coming out of the hood of the car and imediately smelled gas or plastic burning. We got out of vehicle thinking that the car might carch on fire.. The police pushed our car out the freeway to a safe zone. Had the car towed to a shop and confirmed engine failure. As of now the vehicle will not start. We are frightened that there may be a gas leak that might cause an explosion or engine may fail again while driving.

Plastic Steering coupler wore out. Causing metal on metal rubbing. The mechanic I use for car maintenance/repair told me the part cost $10. The part is small but the labor is more intensive. I was charged $454 to replace a $10 part.

My wife was driving as normal, suddenly got an alert! Loud noise, Hybrid System Warning, Safely Stop and Do Not Drive! Stranded in the middle of nowhere with this issue! ????? Towed it to my house. Next day, car works fine. But we are completely scared to drive it now! Took to dealership and they said $3,000 for the part and labor. Are you f’ing serious!? This is not. Wear and tear issue. The hybrid system should abruptly stop and make it so I cannot drive the car! For no apparent reason!? This is completely bullshit! I’ve seen online many complaints that it’s happened after 5,000 miles. Who cares that my car is 9 years old and has 92,000 miles. ???

keep getting random Hybrid system warnings and Check Engine light but when checked, there is no codes to be retrieved. and the dealer couldn't duplicate the problem hence can't fix it. when this message appears on the dashboard, the car will lose power and die. which makes it very dangerous event as the last time it happened i was in the middle of a busy intersection.

MY VEHICLE HAS JUST GOTTEN TO THE POINT WHERE SOME DAYS IT'LL START RIGHT UP AND THEN THE NEXT DAY IT WON'T DO ANYTHING UPON HITTING THE THE PUSH TO START, OTHER THAN GIVING OFF A CLICK FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, BUT I WAS TOLD IT COULD BE A WIRING PROBLEM BECAUSE MY FIRST GUESS WAS THE PROBLEM BUT I HAD ALL THAT TESTED AND IT WASN'T THE BATTERY. I CAN DRIVE IT TO WORK THAT MORNING BUT ONCE I GET READY TO CLOCK OUT THE EVENING IT WON'T START.

  • 12/19/2025· FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

My vehicle had Hyundai Safety Recall 227 (fuel tube replacement) completed on December 7, 2022. After the recall repair, the same fuel-system symptoms returned. A Hyundai dealership diagnosed failure of the high-pressure fuel pump and high-pressure fuel pipe and stated the condition was critical and a safety risk due to fuel system involvement and potential fire hazard. Hyundai Motor America declined assistance, citing vehicle age and mileage, despite this being a recurring fuel-system safety issue following a recall repair. The vehicle continues to present fuel-related safety concerns, and operating the vehicle poses a potential fire risk. In addition, the estimated repair cost exceeds $2,000, which represents a significant financial hardship for a safety-related defect that occurred after a recall repair. I am submitting this complaint due to concern for vehicle safety and the recurrence of a fuel-system defect after a manufacturer safety recall.

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. While driving approximately 55-60 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power, and the vehicle decelerated. The vehicle regained power, and the contact was able to continue driving at slower speeds. While driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled and went into LIMP Mode before regaining power approximately 3 to 4 times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who confirmed that the VIN was not under recall. The contact had spoken with another dealer, Sheehy Hyundai of Waldorf (2910 Robert S. Crain Hwy, Waldorf, MD 20601) and it was confirmed that the VIN was not under recall. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and opened a case. The manufacturer related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V226000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); and referred the contact to the dealer. The failure mileage was 126,000.
