- STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEMCampaign 14V286000 · 29/05/2014
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Ford Explorer vehicles manufactured May 17, 2010, through February 28, 2012. The affected vehicles may experience an intermittent connection in the electric power steering gear, which can cause a loss of the motor position sensor signal resulting in a shut down of the power steering assist.
Risk: If the vehicle experiences a loss of power steering assist it will require extra steering effort at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) software, free of charge. If a vehicle shows a history of a loss of motor position sensor signal when the vehicle is brought in for the recall remedy, its steering rack assembly will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on July 23, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S06.
- WHEELS:HUBCampaign 17E048000 · 28/08/2017
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain Wheel Hub Bearing assemblies, part number HB5Z-1104-C, incorrectly listed as being for installation on the rear axles of 2011-2017 Ford Explorer 4X2 vehicles. These bearings assemblies were manufactured without a self retention feature, possibly resulting in the separation of the wheel or wheel end.
Risk: A loss of the wheel or wheel end can increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Ford will notify the distributors of the hubs specifying that they are to only be used on drive axles. It is believed that none of the hubs were purchased from Ford dealers for the incorrect application. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
- STRUCTURE:BODY:DOORCampaign 15V171000 · 24/03/2015
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Explorer vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the interior door handle return spring may unseat, resulting in interior door handle that does not return to the fully stowed position after actuation.
Risk: If the interior door handle return spring is unseated, the door may unlatch in the event of a side impact crash, increasing the risk of personal injury.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect all four of the interior door handles and either repair or replace them, free of charge. The recall began on July 23, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S11.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2019 Explorer vehicles. The A-pillar trim retention clips may not be properly engaged, allowing the trim to detach.
Risk: A detached trim piece can fall off the vehicle, becoming a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the A-pillar trim as necessary, free of charge. This will be a phased campaign, with the remedy becoming available in different phases based on model years. I PURCHASED A "CERTIFIED" USED 2011 EXPLORER BASE WITH 3500 MILES IN MARCH 2014 FROM FORD DEALER. AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED IN MAY AND STAYED ON STEADY...DEALER REPLACED MASTER MODULE (UNDER WARRANTY) AFTER A WEEK OF WORKING ON THE VEHICLE. AT THE TIME, THEY TOLD ME WHEN THE LIGHT WAS ON, IT INDICATED THE AIR BAGS WOULD NOT DEPLOY IN A CRASH AND THEY WOULD NOT LET ME HAVE THE VEHICLE BACK WHILE THEY WAITED FOR THE PART, A CLEAR INDICATION OF HOW SERIOUS THEY CONSIDERED THE PROBLEM. LIGHT HAS COME BACK ON THREE MORE TIMES SINCE (EVERY 6-8 WEEKS). EACH TIME SINCE, DEALER HAS "GREASED" ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS WHICH CAUSES THE LIGHT TO GO OFF ONLY TEMPORARILY. WHEN THE LIGHT COMES BACK ON, WE ARE USUALLY DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND NOT PROTECTED BY THIS CRITICAL SAFETY SYSTEM. ASIDE FROM THE EXTREMELY UNSAFE CONDITION THIS POSES TO MY FAMILY, IT IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE DIFFICULT TO BRING THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER EVERY SEVERAL WEEKS TO HAVE THEM ONLY TEMPORARILY FIX THE ISSUE. BASED ON OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINTS, I EXPECT THIS WILL CONTINUE FOR ME UNTIL THE WARRANTY EXPIRES AND I CAN'T AFFORD TO FIX THE PROBLEM ANY LONGER. I APPROACHED THE DEALER'S GENERAL MANAGER AND MY REGIONAL FORD REP ABOUT BUYING THE VEHICLE BACK BUT THEY BOTH TOLD ME THEY WOULD ONLY GIVE ME WHAT THE VEHICLE WAS WORTH (WHICH WOULD PUT ME IN A LARGE FINANCIAL HOLE)... *JS

WHEN PARKED IN A PARKING GARAGE I STARTED OUT AND OF MY SPOT AND DOWN A RAMP TOWARD THE PAY STATION/BOOTH OF THE GARAGE TO EXIT. THE POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT CAME ON, I IMMEDIATELY LOST POWER STEERING AND WAS HEADED DIRECTLY TOWARD THE PAY BOOTH/ATTENDANT UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO BRAKE AND MUSCLE THE STEERING AWAY FROM THE IMPENDING CRASH. THIS POWER STEERING ISSUE HAS STARTED TO OCCUR BRIEFLY OVER THE LAST FEW 6 MONTHS AND EITHER RESOLVES ITSELF OR IF I STOP, SHUT OFF, THEN RESTART IT SEEMS TO RESET. THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING SEEMS TO BE AT FAULT. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE LOSING THIS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND THE DANGER IT POSES TO DRIVERS. *JS

In the 2021 Ford Explorer there are multiple leaks due to rain / water damage. The back of the trunk has a leak that has water running down the side into the third row seat it causes rust on to the spare tire, it’s causes fog to be on the inside of the car causing issues to see. There is also leaking in the front of the car that comes out through the light unit above all electric panel. This leaking is causing the ceiling lights to have issues, drips into the dashboard with all the electrical items causing the unit to short, which is where the rear camera display occurs.

DRIVING IN THE MOUNTAINS AT NIGHT, PROCEEDING UP A STEEP AND ICY GRADE, THE VEHICLE GAVE A WARNING SIGNAL ABOUT A POWER STEERING PROBLEM AND IMMEDIATELY THE POWER STEERING UNIT FAILED. THE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT STEERING CAPABILITY OF THIS VEHICLE DURING THIS FAILURE, FORCED US TO CREEP ALONG A MAJOR HIGHWAY TO FINISH THE EIGHT MILES TO THE NEAREST TOWN. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM, I STUMBLED ONTO THE NHTSA WEBSITE AND DISCOVERED THE 2011 EXPLORER OBVIOUSLY HAS A SAFETY FLAW AND A DANGEROUS ONE AT THAT! MY VEHICLE IS IN A FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT NOW AND THE INITIAL DIAGNOSIS IS " THE CAR RECEIVED A FALSE ELECTRICAL SIGNAL AND SHUT DOWN THE POWER STEERING". SERIOUSLY, A FALSE SIGNAL SHUT OFF THE POWER STEERING CAPABILITIES???!!! THEY ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A "10 PAGE CHECKLIST/RE-BOOTING OF THE ELECTRICAL CONTROL SYSTEM OF MY VEHICLE AND I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO CONFIDENCE THIS WILL SOLVE A FUTURE PROBLEM OF POWER STEERING CAPABILITY LOSS, ESPECIALLY SINCE I AM ON MY FOURTH MAJOR COMPUTER FAILURE IN THIS VEHICLE. FYI FORD ENGINEERS; THE STEERING FUNCTION OF A VEHICLE SHOULD NOT BE SUBJECT TO AN ELECTRONIC SIGNAL THAT CAN DEACTIVATE THE ABILITY TO CONTROL THE STEERING OF THE VEHICLE!! *TR

AFTER BRINGING MY CAR IN ON 9/15/14 TO ADDRESS THE FORD EXPLORER 2011 RECALL, SHEEHY FORD IN SPRINGFIELD, VA DECLARED MY PARTS OK AND REPROGRAMMED MY PSCM (I HAD NEVER HAD A SINGLE ISSUE WITH MY POWER STEERING)...I SUBSEQUENTLY DROVE TO KENTUCKY (FROM BURKE, VA) AND SEVERAL OTHER PLACES...EVENTUALLY DRIVING TO MY PARENT'S HOUSE IN VIENNA, VA (ABOUT 30+ MINUTES AWAY) FOR THANKSGIVING DAY (12/27/14), JUST 3 MONTHS LATER. SEVERAL STREETS FROM ARRIVAL I RECEIVED A MESSAGE THAT MY POWER STEERING WAS FAILING. THE CAR BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO DRIVE, BUT I WAS ABLE TO PARK THE CAR IN FRONT OF THEIR HOUSE. AFTER RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET, I HOPED TO BE ABLE TO START THE CAR AND FIND THE PROBLEM FIXED, BUT UNFORTUNATELY WAS NOT ABLE TO STEER THE CAR AT ALL. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED THE NEXT DAY TO A DEALER (I DID NOT CHOOSE THE SAME DEALER WHO HAD DONE THE RECALL). THEY REPLACED THE POWER STEERING PARTS SEVERAL DAYS LATER, BUT THE PARTS WERE NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL BECAUSE THE CODE THEY RECEIVED WAS DIFFERENT. THIS HAPPENED 3 MONTHS AFTER THEY DECLARED MY PARTS OK! I ONLY HAD TO PAY $100 FOR THE FIX BECAUSE OF MY EXTENDED WARRANTY, BUT AM ILL ABOUT WHAT MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED IF I HAD BEEN ON MY WAY TO OR FROM KENTUCKY WHEN THE POWER STEERING FAILURE HAPPENED SO I FEEL OBLIGATED TO REPORT MY ISSUE TO YOU. I UNDERSTAND FROM PRESS RELEASES I'VE SEEN THAT YOU CONSIDER THIS ISSUE CLOSED. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT TO BE THE CASE... *TR

ALL OF A SUDDEN THE REAR WINDOW LOUDLY EXPLODES INWARDS AND SHOWERS OUR 10 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WITH GLASS (SHE WAS THE ONLY PASSENGER IN THE THIRD ROW) AS WELL AS INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. IMMEDIATELY PULLED OFF THE HIGHWAY AT THE NEXT EXIT, THERE WAS NO SIGN OF IMPACT, NO SNOW OR ICE IN THE CAR, NO ROCKS, NO BULLETS. WHERE IT OCCURRED THERE WERE NO OVERPASS OR SIGNS OVER THE ROAD (NOTHING COULD HAVE FALLEN ON OUR CAR). AFTER INSPECTING THE WINDOW, IT WAS APPARENT THAT THE WHOLE WINDOW WAS SHATTERED WITH A LARGE GAPING HOLE IN THE LOWER MIDDLE (12" X 18") WITH MOST OF THAT GLASS IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. THE REAR WINDSHIELD WIPER HAD CAME THROUGH THE HOLE AND WAS INSIDE THE CAR (BUT STILL ATTACHED TO ITS OUTSIDE POSITION). THE EDGES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE REAR WINDOW HAD BROKEN OFF. *TR

My 2011 Ford Explorer steering randomly went out . As I researched I realized that there was a safety recall 14S06 for that particular car. Apparently that recall was announced in 2014( before I purchased the vehicle) The previous owner took the truck to the dealership the have the pscm checked and no codes came back so it was only reprogrammed which is suppose to PREVENT steering loss which is what I am currently dealing with. The dealership is not trying to replace the part free of charge as stated in warranty although they know this is serious safety issue on this vehicle . They are trying to charge me 2800.00 to have the part replaced. I will continue to find a solution . Nothing about this is morally right

THE CAR DROVE FINE AT 7AM - AT 8:30 AM. I PULLED OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY, I WAS GOING 45 MPH WITH MY 9 YEAR OLD IN THE CAR ON A VERY BUSY ROAD, ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR STARTING FLASHING "HILL DESCENT CONTROL OFF" THEN IT WENT TO "SERVICE ADVANCE TRAC" THEN "SERVICE POWER STEERING NOW" AND POWER STEERING COMPLETELY FAILED. I HAD TO STEER THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF A DITCH WITH MY 9 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER, AND ITS 26 DEGREES OUT. CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO MY REPAIR SHOP. REPAIR GUY STATES POWER STEERING RACK IS NOT GOOD AND STATES THERE IS AN OPEN RECALL ON 2011 FORD EXPLORER FOR IT. I LOOK THROUGH SERVICE RECORDS I SHOW HIM IN 2016 RIVERHEAD FORD DID THE WORK 5 DAYS AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR - HE SAYS THERE IS NO WAY IT WAS DONE OTHERWISE THIS WOULD NOT BE HAPPENING. OR, THE PARTS THEY USED TO REPAIR IT ARE FAULTY. I CALLED RIVERHEAD FORD THEY CAN'T SERVICE THE CAR, OR GIVE ME A LOANER UNTIL 1/7/2021 BECAUSE OF COVID & TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS I'VE REPLACED THE POWER STEERING RACK, THE ENGINE BLEW 18 MONTHS AGO, AND NOW THE POWER STEERING RACK AGAIN. THE CAR IS DEFECTIVE, AND I'M LUCKY MY DAUGHTER AND I ARE ALIVE. FORD NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED.

WHEN IT RAINS, THE RAIN COMES IN THE TRUCK AND SEEPS THROUGH THE SEATBELTS, THE FRONT PASSENGER INTERIOR HANDLE, THE TWO LIGHTS IN THE TOP OF THE TRUCK (ABOVE THE CONSOLE), THE STERIO IN THE BACK, THE PASSENGER SIDE UNDER THE DASHBOARD, THROUGH THE TRIM OF THE WINDOWS ON DRIVER AND FRONT PASSENGER SIDE, AND INSIDE THE SUNROOF (YES, THE WINDOWS AND SUNROOF IS CLOSED). THIS HAPPENS IF THE TRUCK IS SITTING IN DRIVEWAY, AND WHEN DRIVING. MY GUESS IS THAT SOMETHING WAS NOT PROPERLY SEALED WHEN THE TRUCK WAS BEING MADE.

My vehicle is subject to NHTSA Safety Recall 14S06 related to loss of electric power steering assist. The Power Steering Control Module was reprogrammed in 2014, and Ford now considers the recall closed based on that reprogramming. In 2025, the vehicle again experienced loss of electric power steering assist and currently exhibits the EPAS diagnostic trouble code associated with the recall defect. This condition has been verified by a Ford dealer. On November 13, 2025, the dealer attempted reprogramming of the steering control module as a diagnostic and customer service step to determine whether reprogramming would resolve the condition. This attempt did not correct the defect, and the loss of steering assist persists. Supplement 3 to Recall 14S06, issued in 2019, includes a Dealer Q&A section (Attachment 4, Question 3) that specifically addresses what happens if a customer experiences loss of steering assist after the module has been reprogrammed. Ford’s guidance states that any subsequent loss of assist after reprogramming may be eligible for extended coverage under a related program. This guidance acknowledges that reprogramming alone may not prevent recurrence of the defect and that further corrective action may be required when the loss of assist returns. Despite this acknowledgment, Ford has denied further remedy solely because the recall is marked “closed” in its internal system and because the vehicle exceeds the time and mileage limits of customer satisfaction program 15N01. The recall defect remains present in the vehicle, and the original remedy has not been adequate to correct it. I am requesting NHTSA review whether Ford has met its obligation under 49 U.S.C. §30120 to provide an adequate remedy for this safety defect. Component: Steering Issue: Loss of power steering assist Recall Remedy: Remedy failed / not provided

POWER STEERING INTERMITTEDLY FAILS AT DIFFERENT TIMES. SEEMS TO HAPPEN EARLY WHEN THE CAR IS USED. THIS OCCURS WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION AND STEERING BECOMES REALLY HARD.
